Yuurei

Yuurei wanted to go do something different in Joya now that he had spent time with people who he didn’t think he would be able to do so. It was weird, but now that he was done with hanging out with them, he would be able to hang out with someone he was familiar with and someone he enjoyed being around. There was a haunted forest that he wanted to go to. It seemed like there were rumors to say that monsters of the night and other creatures lived there. It was why nobody would go in there, and if they did, then they would never return.

He was once a half-elf, so he still had the traits and custom of one as he wanted to see what the forest was truly about. Renji was on his shoulder, but he was nervous as hell. This was something he would never want to do, and he hated the fact that they were really going to be doing this. He was quiet because he knew that it didn’t matter what he said, Yuurei’s decision wasn’t going to change.

The light mage was waiting for Brone to show up. He wondered where the dwarf was, and he figured that he might have gotten lost on the way over here. The forest was dark as it was something they were doing in the nighttime. It was fun this way, and it would be scarier and more thrilling. He also figured if scary things were really living in the forest, then they would come out at night. While waiting for his friend to arrive, Yuurei would hear noises that would come from the forest, he would nod as it seemed that things might be waiting for them in there.

“I wonder what’s keeping him held up.” He said to himself waiting for Brone.

The days he spent in the forest were taxing, though the dwarf did his best to be optimistic and use this chance to train himself to handle living in such a situation. Eventually he reached a village that helped him. Luckily the villagers heard of a passerby that resembled Yuurei. So after spending a night, getting rest, food, and getting his armor checked at the blacksmith's shop, Brone packed up the next morning and made his way in the direction the villagers stated they had saw the half-elf go to.

After seeing the sun set three times and traveling on foot, he decided to aim for a high place in order to get a birds-eye-view, so once he reached the top of a cliff, he scouted the area, though all he saw was forest. To his fortune, he met up with a couple of hikers who frequent the area. They stated they had spotted the half-elf and informed him of a haunted part of the forest, then he made his way there intending to handle the situation. Brone confirmed it had to be him, thanked the couple, then made his way in that direction.

Eventually the dwarf spotted the familiar white haired half-elf and the orange feline at his side, "Do ye know how long of a travel I went through in order to get here? Then I had to search the entire damn region to look for yer arses" the grumpy dwarf dropped his heavy luggage on the floor, looked at his friend with a sour face, but eventually the expression brightened to a smile, couldn't hold in the excitement he had for what was planned.

Yuurei

Yuurei was waiting for a bit as he didn’t know if Brone would appear. Of course, the man would show, but what he said made him surprised. It seemed like he had gotten lost on his way over here. That sucked, but at least he didn’t end up inside the haunted forest that they were going to. The half-elf was ready to go, and he was happy that his friend had made it.

“I bet it was a long journey indeed, but at least you’re here now and that is all that matters. Now that we’re here I heard a lot of weird things about this part of the forest. So be on your toes and be ready for anything.” He said to Brone as he was ready.

Yuurei would enter the forest as his eyes would look around the terrain, he was familiar with. He wanted to make sure that there was nothing waiting to drop on them, and when he felt as if the area was clear he would move forward. His eyes were not meant for this type of darkness, and at the same time, he didn’t want to use his light magic. He figured it would basically scream out that they were here, so he chose a different course of action.

“What do you think we’ll find in a haunted forest Brone?” He would ask this question wondering what he would say.

Renji would look around as well as he was making sure that Brone was still following them. He would also look around to see if Yuurei had missed anything. This was scary for the Exceed, but he was hoping that with this much firepower around them, they could take on anything right? He shook his head as he was trying to shrug out any bad thoughts that might have entered his mind.

Brone grunted at the half-elf, "Damn right it was a long journey! Ye could say 'hi', blast it!" he barked as he followed Yuurei and Renji into the thick of the forest; though he may have expressed frustration, he was actually glad they could cut the small talk and just jump into the task at hand, the dwarf never cared about beating around the bush when it was best to get to the point. Now they were entering what seems to be the darker part of the forest they were in. Even though it was still daylight out, the cluster of the trees and brush were so thick, that the high branches would eventually block out the sun's light from shining down upon them, eventually they had entered a part of the forest where it resembled late evening, only bits of light allowed though with regular eyesight to move forward, though with caution.

With dwarven eyesight, Brone was able to direct Yuurei whenever the half-elf seem to nearly walk off the path or might trip over an uprooted portion of a tree or shrug. "Oy!" he called out, catching the light mage from walking off the side of the path that drops into an undergrove, "If ye won't use yer light magic, then let me guide ye for a bit" the dwarf got irritated and walked in front of the half-elf, "As for what may be in this forest, we could find anything in here, some villagers I had spoken te had said things like ghosts of lost travelers roaming or living trees that would protect the forest, or maybe even witches" The dwarf laughed, though secretly he worried about such things being true. When it came to physical beings like moving trees, he had no problem with, given that he could chop them down with his axes, but ghosts have no physical form and witches never fought directly, using wicked tricks.

Yuurei

Yuurei would hear the attitude in the dwarf’s voice as they were walking through the forest. He figured he could have said hello or something. He would keep moving though as he wanted to see what was going to happen here. Still, before he could say anything, he would hear Brone’s words. He would look over at the man and he was happy to hear his words. He wanted the excitement of darkness, and if he didn’t have to lead and trip, he would allow Brone to do it.

“Sure, you got it Brone. You can lead the way.” He said with a smile on his face.

They would switch the line up now as Yuurei was behind Brone now as he was going to wait for the man to guide them. While waiting for them to start moving thought, he would hear what he had to say. The berserker figured that would be the case or at least the stories that were told by the villagers.

“Yeah I actually saw one of us fight a ghost. I think they used magic to vanquish the thing, and it left something on the floor as it dispersed. I think they linger onto an object they cherish most in the world, and that’s how they stay on this plane of existence.” He said this to Brone as it was something he experienced not too long ago.

“Also, I’m glad you’re here and happy to see you.” He said with a smile on his face as he would bow slightly to Brone and then stood up straight.

He would look around to see if anything within the forest would move. He was trying to see something that wasn’t there right now. He did feel like there was something in this forest, but he didn’t know what it was, and he couldn’t point it out or come up with a theory for it.

“Ready to move when you are.” He said to Brone as he would start moving when the dwarf did.

Brone Heavyaxe
There was a section on their walk where the path seem to have vanished, up until that point, the naturally made path seemed noticeable enough, but lessened as progress was made, as if the forest itself was telling travelers 'This is as far as you go'. Brone would kneel and touch the ground, feeling the dirt in his hand, then grabbing a handful of pebbles, feeling their smooth and ridge ends while hearing Yuurei's explanation of his own encounter with a ghost. The dwarf was surprised to hear that such things existed, though he didn't fully doubt them in the first place, for he had always wondered what such encounter would be like.

The stones in his hands shifted as he played with them, felt them, "Stone, guide us" he said as he stood up and took another look around. After a moment of silence where the only sound was the clattering of the pebbles in Brone's hand, he then underhand tossed the rocks and watched them tumble through a pair of trees, "That way" the dwarf said as he followed the direction. He hadn't been a religious man, but he trusted the Stone, for he knew the dwarves had an everlasting connection to it since the beginning.

After some distance of walking, the trees seem to disperse a bit and the ground leveled, as if another path had been found, but seeing as the ground wasn't paved meant that travelers have barely walked this far in if there ever were travelers that reached this point, regardless, Brone trusted himself, his friends, and the Stone.

Something felt odd, or maybe it was his nerves. The silence of the forest seem to have increased, which made no sense to Brone. Birds in the distance, small creatures scuttering, the slight wind against the branches, these were the ambient noise of any woodland area, but deep within this neck of the woods, it seem to have deafened, as if the forest was quietly watching them.

Yuurei

While they were waiting for Brone to decide on their path, both Yuurei and Renji would look around to see if they could see anything. Of course, they would be blinded by the darkness that was within the forest. It would rub him the wrong way to be blind, but he knew he was doing this to himself. It wouldn’t take long, but Brone would tell them where to go and he would follow him. He wasn’t sure what the dwarf did, but he was leading them, and it was all that mattered.

As they were walking around the forest it would seem like things were too quiet. He wasn’t sure what was going on here, but there was no animal life in the forest. The sound of the brushes no longer existed, and it bothered him. What was going to happen now that they were venturing deeper within the forest? He did feel that the ground they were walking on was different than everything else.

The silence though was enough to drive anybody insane and it would raise his heartbeat because he was expecting something to come and attack them. He kept moving behind Brone making sure that he didn’t fall behind. His movements were sluggish and soon enough the group would hear movements from their left. Yuurei would look in the direction, but he wasn’t able to see anything within this darkness. Renji would look behind him making sure that there was nothing creeping up from behind them.

They have been walking through the thick of the woods, the only sound was of their feet against the ground and them snapping twigs and the crunches of leaves as their feet fell upon the path. It was eerily quiet and Brone began to wonder what it was they were looking for and how long will it take before something would happen, if anything will happen at all.

Just when the dwarf began to question whether or not they should turn back, something moved to their left but as he looked in that direction, he couldn't spot anything other than brush and trees. There was too much coverage to get a good sighting of whatever that was. He noticed Yuurei and Renji was on their toes, so to confirm it wasn't his imagination and that they truly did hear something. It could possibly be an animal or something else, but the cluster of trees were too close together and it was too dark for a larger animal to traverse through this terrain, but the movement didn't seem light enough for a critter like a rabbit to make.

"Keep on yer toes, with all the plants, I don't think I could see an enemy before it attacks" his hand went to the handle of his steel battleaxe, wandering when he would have to draw the thing and hoping he wouldn't have to until they got to a clearing or something similar, the trees were too close together for him to swing his weapons.

Yuurei

Yuurei would hear movement, but he couldn’t see what was making them. That was scary enough for him to wish he could see in the dark. He was fighting against the will to put a light up. His heart was racing as he could feel the adrenaline rush. This was interesting as he would hear Brone’s words. That would be the case and he hope whatever it was, would hurry up and show up. His body was ready for something to make its way in front of him. Renji was gripping harder than they did. It would seem like he was just as scared as Yuurei. This wasn’t fun and he could see anything even though he was a feline.

Still, it seemed like they wou0ld continue moving. This was good because from what he could tell, Brone wouldn’t be able to fight around this kind of terrain.

“It seems like whatever lives in this forest, finally showing itself. I think we should at least find a place where we would be able to defend ourselves.” He said to Brone.

Renji’s neck would go back and forth as he was looking around. He was scared and even though he couldn’t see anything he was trying his best. He figured that whatever was following them would at least reveal a glimpse of what they were. Still, for that to happen, then it would mean that they would have to get really close to Renji. The Exceed didn’t think of it like that, but now that he thought about it, he was not enjoying the idea.

“Renji can you give me my gauntlet.” He said to his partner.

Renji would open the bag and the gauntlet would appear on his right arm. He kept walking now as he was ready to block an incoming attack from whatever was following them in this forest.

"Yeah, let's keep moving until we find an open area" Brone agreed with Yuurei's suggestion and continued to move, this time picking up the pace. Every so often, the dwarf would look back to see if he could spot the creature; whatever it was, he could hear the thing moving through the brush, keeping up with them by pace and every so often, he would see a silhouette darting between the trees and shrubs, "Keep moving" he told his allies as he continue to bush forward, pushing away low branches and hoping whatever was following them to lose track of them, but he had a strong doubt it wouldn't be that easy to do so.

Eventually and fortunately, they found a clearing. Brone burst through the bushes and into the clearing, he stood in the center and drew both his axes while turning about, standing to face the direction they came from, but instead of the hidden creature appearing from that area, all fell silent for a bit. Then after a moment of silence, out of the brush came a humanoid, looking skinny to the point it looked as if it was starving, it's skin was albino white and nowhere on it's visible naked body was there any hair, not even on the head. The creature crawled on all fours, wearing nothing but a loincloth.

"A damn wendigo" Brone growled, surprised to see a creature he heard about in legend, "Such monsters come to exist when a humanoid becomes possessed by a cannibalistic spirit, be careful... they're stronger than they look" Brone seemed worried because he was, this was the first time he stared at something he thought was a simple myth, but the look on the monster's eyes proved this was all too real and dangerous.

Yuurei

Yuurei was following Brone to the best of his abilities. He had to make sure that the dwarf didn’t move too far from him. Yes, if he moved too ahead of him, then he would be screwed and would lose his way through this forest. He would get smacked by a few branches, but there was not much he could do about that. Still, it wouldn’t take long for him to make out of all the brushes as he would be out in the clear. He kept moving until he was close enough to see Brone. He would look in the direction that the dwarf was facing.

He was ready for whatever it was to come out. He had gotten into a fighting position as something would come out of the brushes. He wasn’t sure what it was because he couldn’t see a damn thing. His eyes looked towards Brone for a second before looking back at the creature. He didn’t want to lose focus on where it might go. Hearing Brone’s words about what was in front of him, he knew that it couldn’t be good. There were werewolves, liches, and even vampires, but there were more than in this world it seemed.

Still, Yuurei was at a disadvantage right now, which annoyed him. He couldn’t see, and he didn’t like this. It was something he would have to find a solution to, and he would later on. The Wendigo was ready to attack, and it would look at Yuurei. It could tell, which of the two could really see it, so it would go for the easy prey of the two. It wouldn’t take long for it to run towards Yuurei on all fours. It would try to swipe its claws at Yuurei. The light mage would block it last second with his gauntlet as he was pushed back from the force.

His eyes were shocked to see what he had seen in front of him. That was scary-looking they were facing, but he couldn’t really tell where it was.

“Brone, you going to need to take care of it. I can’t do anything if I can’t really see it.” He would say to his friend.

Brone Heavyaxe
The creature was ugly from head to toe, especially it's eyes which were black with tiny glowing pupils, it's jaw seemed unhinged with sharp teeth lining the top and bottom rows. Brone gripped the handles of his axes readily, expecting the creature to go after him, but he was wrong, the wendigo dashed after Yuurei and to the dwarf's surprise, the half-elf was late to react, not even fully countering the thing, just simply pushing it back away from him. He was confused until Yuurei pointed out that he was at a disadvantage with the lack of being able to see in the dark, "Damn it! I'll take it from here then" he said, cursing under his breath, "Oy! Ugly!" He called the wendigo and immediately hearing this, the creature snapped it's head to face Brone, the dwarf had a shiver sent down his spine, the creature looked to be a spawn from the darkest corners of the world and it's eyes weren't making the visage look any better.

The wendigo ran forward on all fours toward the dwarf, but unlike the half-elf, Brone was able to see in the dark, so as the distance closed between them, he swung his iron axe which hit the neck of the thing, however as the blade hit it's target, it felt dense, not even sinking in, which this sudden realization, the wendigo took advantage of the dwarf's surprise and slashed at the chest of the dwarf with it's steel-like claws, sending a handful of rings from the armor flying. Brone pushed forward and swung his steel axe which it's blade then hit the creature's ribs with such force it sent the creature tumbling backwards.

"Damn that thing, it's hide it's tough" Brone said. As the wendigo had flown, he noticed no blood was on either of his blades, meaning even his steel axe couldn't penetrate it's skin, though it wasn't all a lost, when the steel axe landed it's hit, the dwarf felt a rib or two crack. Whatever this thing was made out of it, it didn't really matter, so long as it's bones can be broken, then it should be able to die.

Yuurei

Yuurei was frustrated because he couldn’t fight alongside Brone right now. He would use himself as a decoy, but then it would also mean that he would get Renji in harm’s way. That wasn’t going to work, and he would just stand there. He never really fought in the dark, so he never thought about this happening to him. This was the first time, and honestly, he didn’t think it would ever be a problem. He was a light mage, but he didn’t have one spell that was specifically made to light up the area around him. He would have to train and learn how to make a spell to do exactly that.

Still, he would hear the clashing of the two as he would lose sight of Brone. He was planning on shooting a spell out randomly, but he would hear Brone speak. He would sigh with relief when he heard him. It also meant he was still standing. The light mage would go on the defense as he wasn’t sure what would happen next.

The wendigo got back onto all fours, staring at Brone with a threatening look in it's eyes. The dwarf looked over to Yuurei and Renji who were on the defense. At this point, he realized he would need to finish off the creature himself in order to save all three of them, "Alright, ye albino twig, come at me!" he called to the thing. As if the creature understood him, it ran forward to meet the dwarf. Brone moved in as well, favoring his steel axe as the blade slammed down onto the head of the wendigo, bringing it's face to meet the dirt. Without letting up, Brone brought down his iron axe onto the neck of the monster, though the blade didn't cut, he felt something crack.

As the wendigo tried to lift itself, Brone brought his steel axe down upon the monster again, this time as the blade met the neck, it sank in a bit, then he recycled the tactic by hitting the neck with the iron axe again, then back to the steel axe until eventually the monster's head flew off and it's body lay limp. "Alright" Brone caught his breath, "Time to get the hell out of here, and the neck time we come back, we're bringing a blasted lantern" he said as he walked over to Yuurei, grabbed him by the wrist and guided him and Renji the way they came to exit the forsaken forest.

Yuurei

Yuurei would wait for the battle to be over. He could hear the noise from the wendigo scream for its life. He would be able to hear Brone’s axes slam against the monster repeatedly. He wasn’t sure what was going on, but it would seem like things were getting tough right now. It wouldn’t take long, but the noise of the wendigo would come to an end, and soon Brone would be the one speaking. He looked over to where the voice came from and walked over to it. He laughed as his friend was right. If they were ever traveling in the dark again, then he would make sure to bring a source of light.

When he got close to Brone, he would feel his wrist being grabbed as he was being guided out of the forest. It was as if he were a child, but it seemed fighting the wendigo alone made Brone anxious. They would be out of the forest, and he would hope never to step in there again.
