From a time in the recent past…

Having relieved the spirit of a little girl from the torments of her afterlife, she left the crypt beneath Oakland Church. It was time to go to the family that hired her and accept her reward. As much as she hated getting money for doing their dirty work, she was glad that she was able to help the ghost of a young lost girl move on. She would never have done so if it weren't for the wealthy family in Oak just wishing their basement would stop getting flooded. If it weren't for the raw anger she saw in Lilith, she might have even just left the family as it was. Sayha knew they could afford to keep fixing it every time little Lilith cried her heart out over her untimely death that was more or less caused by the family's posh behavior.

With each step she took to the family's residence, she grew more and more anxious to see them. Not the nervous kind of anxious, but the kind that was filled with just anger. Every fiber in her being wanted to give them a piece of her mind for what they did-- or the lack thereof-- to the girl. Moreso, for what they neglected to tell Lilith's family after their only daughter's death. Having suspicions about what happened was one thing. She was sure Lilith's parents had plenty of suspicions, for drowning in the river in Oak Town was an unusual way of passing when she was supposedly supposed to have been playing with one of her friends. But suspecting the family's role in her death and knowing it were two different things. Atani intended to give them closure, but not before accepting her reward.

Finally, the manor came into sight.

A brass knocker the shape of a raven was mounted on the heavy wooden door. She rapped it three times, each one releasing a resounding thud. She patiently waited until someone answered the door. She half expected some butler or maid, but it ended up being the man she had spoken to before-- the father of the daughter who was playing with Lilith that fateful day.

"You've returned already?" He sounded stunned, as if a spirit of Lilith's caliber would have taken her longer to deal with, but in the end the ghost did only belong to that of a little girl. She had a bad temper, but she didn't live long enough to fill her body and spirit to fill with the same life force an adult had; however, explaining all of that to the man would have been helpless. Instead, Atani nodded her head and waited for him to speak.

"Do you have any proof Lil- I mean, her ghost has been dealt with?" He seemed hesitant to even speak Lilith's name, as if doing so would anger her even more, but he had no real reason to worry. Her ghost was, in fact, dealt with... though perhaps not in the manner he had hoped, but there was no need to explain that.

"No, not any physical proof at least. But you will find that your house won't be flooding anymore, and... if need be, I can tell you what Lilith told me when it was time to put her to rest. She didn't want her last words as a ghost to be in vain."

Atani shot the man a knowing look. There was no elaboration necessary. Upon hearing her veiled threat, all the color drained from his face. She would say he looked even paler than Lilith's ghastly skin.

"And... what of her family? Did you tell them what she said?"

"I haven't located them yet."

A lie.

"Y-yet?" the man stuttered. Atani narrowed her eyes and gave him a look full of suspicion. "Don't you think her family has the right to know?"

She didn't even think that it was possible for his face to grow even paler, but it did. He cleared his throat before speaking once more. "This matter was settled long ago, believe me. Here--" He dug around in his wallet and fished out extra cash to add to her already lucrative reward. "-- I'll give you this if you swear not to say anything. I don't want this to cause them any more pain than it already did." Atani gave a solemn nod.

"I swear it."

Another lie.

Of course she wasn't going to let Lilith's family go on believing what the others told them.

If it was one thing she couldn't stand, it was being lied to. (Just ask Zane, he knows that just as well as anyone.) It was okay though if she lied to people such as the ones who had offered her the job before. They deserved it for telling an even worse lie to a family in distress over their child's death, a death that should never have even happened, a death that wouldn't have happened if the family's daughter didn't give a damn about whatever pretty clothes she was wearing at the time. A wet dress was a small price to pay for saving a friend's life.

Atani looked at the extra jewels in her hand. In all technicality, she did swear out loud not to say anything. Whatever she did after was up in the air. It was a foolish deal of his to make on his part.

She would have thought that a man of such wealth would know better, but perhaps all that wealth came from an inheritance or something. And maybe some basic common sense sadly didn't make it down the family line, but no matter. What was done was done, and Atani wanted nothing to do with that family after her trip to the crypt.

She eventually went to the address of Lilith's parents, the same address she also lied about knowing-- but again, that lie was okay because the family only deserved the same treatment they dealt to others. She knocked on their much more modest door and greeted one of the parents who recognized her from her previous visit.

"Hi," she smiled. "I think we should talk about your daughter... about Lilith."

Atani was invited into their home and she told them everything. About her death and about putting her to rest.

They were thankful for finally being able to hear the truth, but as Atani expected when she prepared herself for telling them the story, they were distraught as well. They had so many emotions coursing through their veins, they probably didn't even know what to make of it, how to sort any of it out. Atani thought it was best to give them space, but before she left, she offered them the extra money she had earned from her quest before. Also as expected, they refused, but Atani insisted. She didn't even deserve it. But the family who was lied to for all this time, they did.

She was about to take her leave when Lilith's mother mentioned that her sister had put out a request regarding a ghost in the crypt as well. She would have loved for none other than Atani to assist with whatever request that may be.

So much loss for one family, both losses resulting in a restless ghost. What were the odds? If she were back in Hargeon or Astera, she would have said those odds were low. But perhaps in Oak they were higher. Much higher. Really, there was only one way to find out for sure, and that was to keep doing what she did best in this town.

Atani went in search of the address the woman had told her about. She gave the elf some brief details about what it entailed, but perhaps this aunt of Lilith's would shed some light on the true task at hand. From what was described, it didn't seem like dealing with the spirit would be too difficult, though that remained to be seen. For all she knew, it could be. After all, she felt as if that woman, Lilith's mother, was... withholding information of sorts.

When Atani finally did meet Lilith's aunt, she finally understood what sort of information was being withheld.

"A fire ghost." Atani repeated. "Attacking your home?"

Lilith's aunt nodded. "As I said, he was an ex of mine." Honestly, that didn't clear things up. He had to have one hell of a temper to explicitly go after this woman in his afterlife and try to scorch her to... death was it? Or was it just to be an annoyance to her everyday life? None of these fires were particularly livid, but they were enough to cause concern, because all it took was one flame reaching the wrong place to set everything ablaze. Even if a ghost was in full control of its supernatural powers, things happened.

But anyway-- a bad temper, seriously? Sure, it explained the characteristic fire of a hothead, but it seemed more likely that this aunt did something.

Well, there was only one way to find out, and she didn't feel like pressing this woman for any further explanation. She would let the ghost do the talking. They were one of the few of the dark entities she could trust not to lie, because what did they have to lose? They were already dead. She just had to keep in mind to take whatever they said with a grain of salt, especially if they were a perturbed spirit... much like the one she was about to encounter.

Ignoring all the warnings the government and members of the Oakland Church put up, Atani went into the very catacombs that were (for the most part) sealed off from the public. Once in, she began her search for is ex boyfriend of Lilith's aunt, who she found out was named Joy. Her ex was named Lang. They hadn't lasted very long.

In fact, Joy was the last person Lang had dated before his sudden passing. According to her records, they had been dating for at least a month. They hadn't yet made it to two before he died. They had gotten into a heated argument one day. The next, Joy hadn't heard a word from him, but that wasn't unusual for Lang's behavior. She expected him to go blow off steam and come back to her within a few days, but she never heard back. It wasn't until an entire week had passed until she heard that a fire broke out in his apartment. It wasn't one big enough to seriously damage other parts of his building, hence why she didn't hear of it in Oak, but it was bad enough to kill him. But was that all there was to the story?

It ended up taking far less time than before to find this ghost in particular. When the ghost of Lang did appear, it appeared in a far different state than Lilith's. In fact, it was the polar opposite. Instead of a little girl, this was an adult man. Instead of a watery drowned appearance, it was almost as if this ghost was made of fire itself. Atani could even feel heat radiating off of him.

"Joy's boyfriend, I presume?"

"Ex boyfriend." He said it like he had venom in his breath. Atani asked about what really happened that day. In short, Joy's version of the story wasn't too far off from the truth. Only, Lang sorta blamed Joy for the fire. According to him, if it weren't for her dumping him in the argument, he would have never gotten drunk and passed out while the gas stove was still going.

He certainly didn't wish her dead, but this whole thing was almost like getting the last word. Atani didn't mean to speak ill of the dead, but Joy did the right thing dumping his ass that night. Gods, how was she going to make this one calm down? She could already tell that this man was going to get on her nerves just as much as it got on Joy's.

"Look, you've had your fun, but Joy sent me down here to stop the burning," Atani explained. As expected, Lang retaliated. Not with fire, but with words that were just as heated, many of which were not ones that Atani cared to repeat at any point in her life. She sighed and dug a paper talisman from her pocket that she had brought just in case the spirit was just as hot headed as she feared it would be. She banished the spirit with it and returned to Joy with the talisman as proof.
