“Yeesh, I didn’t know that Salem would want to come out to Seven to duke it out here. I haven’t even trained any new spells since that fight with Teveni.” Alaric sat on a bench behind a wooden gate. The shadows hid his face from the crowd of the arena, but Alaric could see them getting antsy. It wasn’t too packed of a crowd today. Why would it be? Neither Alaric nor Salem were anybody world-renowned. Salem probably knew more people than Alaric. He was more social. Plus more worldly traveled. Alaric had been here before, Seven. It wasn’t the best of times for him but whenever was. He worked in the pits under a minor arena out in the third-largest town. Just because the main one was in the Capital didn’t mean it was the only one. He had been a custodian amongst the beasts since he was a beast in the eyes of his boss.

” Ladies and Gentlemen, May I have your attention, please? We are about to begin the fifteenth match of the day. From Fiore Alaric Holloway and Salem Emir!”  

The gate by Alaric began to shake and start to rise. Alaric stood up and started to slowly walk out from the dimly light waiting area. There were maybe a thousand people out there. Maybe more. It was hard to tell down here. He found his way towards the center of the arena and stood there waiting for his little water Fae to show himself. “Well, let’s see what you’ve got waterboy.” Alaric lifted his hands for a boxer’s style stance and waited to see what might be tossed his way.

Salem sat on his bench meditating. He was as cool as a winter spring. Even if excitement bubbled up underneath him. He thought this would be a good chance to work on feelings between them. Salem learned it was human custom for people to fall in love when experiencing excitement. Salem had never been to Seven but heard how exciting the arena was. It only made sense that fighting each other till one was unconscious and exciting the heart, would lead to deeper feelings. Salem felt smug at understanding human mating customs.

The announcement was made and the gate opened up. Salem walked out staff in hand and greeted the crowd. His diadem on his head gave him a more princely demeanor. His charm was guaranteed to make him a crowd favorite, as long as he did not get horribly beaten. No one wanted a charmer without any substance.

Salem smiled at the comment from the wolf man. He decided to reply right after. “I’ve got some things. You even came early for once. Guess someone is ready for battle.” Salem was cheeky to his chosen potential partner. His words were replayed and the audience got a bit rowdy at the potential gossip. A vague relationship, and the potential for them to be ex-lovers. It was the recipe for a potential bloodbath.

He waited for the battle to start, lifting his staff in a pointing motion. Soon as the signal was given, he would be ready to put in some work and cast some spells.

Alaric smirked. “I was always better with my hands than mouth when handling things.” He gave Salem a slight wink. The announcer, a rather plain-looking older gentleman raised his hand. The crowd’s excitement started to build. Alaric’s own heart started to beat faster. Maybe this sort of thing would be fun. Who knows, Salem might be quite the mage. He was classified to take higher quests than Alaric, so he was likely accomplished in ways. Alaric had grown a bit since that first encounter. Maybe not so much his magic but his physique. He had to rely on his force in this fight. Salem’s water magic had a clear advantage over his fire-based bomb magic.

“Alright boys, clean fight. I’ll stop if anything gets out of hand.” With that brief overview of the rules, the judge dropped his hand down and instantly teleported out from the arena. The match had begun.

Feeling as if it was best to go ahead and close the gap before Salem took off with his staff, Alaric would lunge at Salem, using his left arm for a quick hook towards his right arm. Nothing too wild, just testing the waters. See how slippery this fairy was gonna be.

Salem was excited to start the bout. He listened to the rules but tried not to relax his stance. No sooner than the fight started that Salem gripped his staff to activate the magic circles. His staff got wrapped by water as he activated his flight spell. It made his staff feel light weight and very easy to use.

“Surprise, you will rush this quickly.”

The fae did not lose his calm. When he spoke he had already finished casting his second spell. The magic circle was less than a meter away, right in the path that Alaric was lunging, at the moment. Why would the man lunge that far away was beyond him. The speed of the spell was fast and the wall was built. It gave Alaric the option to go through or around it. As Salem sat on his staff prepared to move.

“You should really have done that in a much closer range dearie.” Salem gave a shit eating grin from behind his wall. Keeping a hand free for a quick cast, as he taunted away. Alaric would have to climb over the 8 meter height, go around the ten meter length, or break through by doing a certain amount of damage (2S).

Salem was slightly nervous at the speed Alaric showed. They started the fight 15 meters away. If the wolfman had lunged twice he would have reached Salem before he could react much.

“Why not end things quickly? Then we can grab dinner and take in the sights together, right?” Alaric retorted as he rushed forward. There it is He thought. Salem moved like water itself, from his movements with the staff water rose and took him to the sky. The one spell Alaric had truly seen Salem cast before. “Tsk. Guess, no quickie?” He snickered. Alaric’s lunge ended and a wall formed between him and Salem. Water was going to be tricky. Alaric stopped shortly before the wall’s location and looked up to see his flying fairy.

“Always flying away. Am I that scary?” He blew a gust from his nose and scrunched his face while looking up. “So, what are ya gonna do up there? Make it rain? I’m not sure the people here are looking to see me get soaked.”

“Honey. You seem to be mistaken. I haven’t left the ground.” Salem cracked a joke at his wolftoy’s expense. He was sitting on his staff but it was not like he flew up. For some reason his opponent started to look towards the sky. Not that his buddy getting distracted was detrimental to him fighting.

He quickly pointed when Alaric stopped at the wall. The blue-ish green magic circle formed in front of his finger, a beam of his water shot from the circle. It flew towards Alaric as if trying to hit him quickly, it phased through the wall made of water as if it was not there. Salem figured a binding spell would do better than a hit at the moment. His wolf man could be resistant. If he wrapped him up like a gift it would be easier to tame and beat him into submission. Truly what any fae really wanted.

It seemed Salem was not taking to the air right away and hung simply on his staff as the waves crashed around it. The wall kept the two apart but it was translucent enough for Alaric to see the man, though obscure. The wall wasn’t an issue, the issue that Alaric would find it that Salem definitely had a better grasp on magic than Alaric. A stream of water burst from the wall, Alaric was too late to notice the glow of the magic circle. As the beam of water struck him, Alaric found himself quickly wrapped in a thin but forceful cocoon of water vapor. “Damn it, I didn’t think you’d beat me in a contest of strength.” He grunted as he tried to force his way out of the bind.

Alaric took a deep breath and felt the heat around him rise as he released pure mana into the bind. As he exhaled the mist soon dissipated from sight and he was free. He would look directly towards the wall, which was standing right before him, and throw a jab right at it forcing the water to lose its shape and collapse. Taking away Salem’s cover. “Oh honey, I’m home.” He gleefully touted as took a step towards Salem.

Salem had a smug smile that was erased when Alaric started to get out of the bind. He was impressed it managed to hit the man. He was not impressed by the fact that he shrugged off the effect like it was nothing. He had worked on the stickiness in that spell for a long time. It was not some small magic that could normally be ignored like that. It was why he was surprised that Alaric could even burn it off. Salem thought the wolf would have needed to put in a lot more effort then he did.

“That was not a contest of strength. You should not have been able to brute force your way out.”

The fae was complaining as he sat on his staff. When Alaric started throwing a punch Salem made a fist. Forming the magic he greeted Alaric with a bolt as he was speaking. Was it rude? Maybe, but it was not like he was caring much. Salem started riding the broom sitting side saddle. He was not going up but around. Getting more magic ready. The Fae wanted to turn the match into a fun and deadly game of tag. Either the werewolf was gonna give out from all the small pecks, or Salem was gonna run out of mana.

Alaric had such a prideful grin plastered all over his smug ass face. As the wall collapsed and he approached his prey he was met with a firm smack of water to his face. The blast was not enough to cause any damage to him nor was it strong enough to even push him back but what it was strong enough for was to piss him off. “Hey!” His tone was clearly annoyed. Though the force wasn’t enough to cause him to stumble back, the sudden splash of water to the face was enough to give him cause to take a half step back. The laughter from the crowd only brought more blood rushing to his face in frustration. Alaric wiped his face clean and looked around to find the water fae gleefully gliding about on his staff.

Salem was placing some distance between the two. Alaric sighed. Cat and mouse chase it seemed was going to be their game of the day. Alaric looked about the arena to see how long this game might last. There were no real objects within the arena to use. Only the gates they came from and the wall around the edges. With it being a large oval shape, there was some tightening of the shape at either end. It was still wide enough for several men standing shoulder to shoulder to pass through but it would be the best place to try and snag the man. “Alright, let’s play chase then.” He would mutter under his breath.

Alaric took off towards Salem, not at full speed at first. No, he slowly jogged and gradually gained speed. He did not want to go into an all-out sprint and exhaust himself early on. No, he needed to bide his time and exert himself when the moment arose. Knowing Salem, he was not going to just ride around looking cute sidesaddle on his broom. Nah, the crowd would be bored with the fight too soon and Salem was too smart of a man to have that happen. He knew that the two of them were here for entertainment and being entertaining was part of the job. They had to give the crowd a show, not just a chase.
