Kaz stood atop the building holding the new weapon in his hands. The staff buzzed with power in his fingers. He could feel the mana that was possessed within. The staff of Merlin and the all-seeing eye were now his. He could see almost all the people talking and acting below. The overwhelming rush of it all, caused him to step back and sit on top of the towering cathedral. The staff propped up against the side of his body. One hand was still firmly on it as Ventus floated around them. Times were changing indeed. With this…how could he be caught. The hunt was now easier than ever. The church invited him in to arrest him but they ended up granting him something far more detrimental to their cause.

A grin came across his face. He decided to use the staff now. Holding it before him, he focused on the tip of the staff and his vision shifted away from the tool and back into the chambers where he was standing trial.

“He has escaped,” a knight said as he entered the room. The defense attorney smiled and the church leader slammed a fist on a pile of rubble.

“All the power we had in this room and yet he still escaped,” the priest said.

“His magic makes him exceptionally challenging to hold. We didn’t expect it to do that much though,” a rune knight added. The judges began to gather themselves. Some were hurt and bloody from the collapsed building. They pulled one another out and magic shifted the debris away and cleansed their wounds.

“We have to keep this silent. No one can know what happened here. It would be…painful for the people,” a knight said and a church leader agreed. They chatted back and forth about the secrecy needed to hide the actions of a former wizard saint. Kaz was still liked by the people. And it would show weakness in the church and the knights for this to happen. The people may also panic, thinking an uncontrolled vampire was now free and may think him an enemy of humans.

“Is decided then. Sworn to keep that secret to those within this room,” the priest nodded and held out the book of illumin' for them to swear on. Even the low level knights that were caught up in the mix were sworn in. “We all know the penalty for breaking an oath to the church,” the priest gazed around the room at mostly silent stares. They all knew that lives hung in the balance with this one. The knights in front did their best to keep anyone else from entering and asking questions about what happened.

“Go out and find the intruder. We were attacked by an unknown terrorist during our preceding,” a rune knight told the people and nodded at the priest. “If you find any guild mages out there, ask them for help and bring them in to help fortify the church. If they can’t then keep track of their locations in case we need them,” the captain of the knights said.

“Interesting. A plan to keep people looking for me, but not to arrest me. A nice way to save face and still keep the mission going with the web of knights and church men,” Kaz said while he sat on the roof.

He listened to the plans they continued to make until the knights left the room, leaving only the high priests. With only the church members in the room, he refocuses his attention on them. And then he caught it. A faint whisper. Worry about where the wind mage may be going next.

“Do you think he knows about Meningrad,” one man said.

“Impossible. It's just a small outpost,” another replied. “The sect of Michael is safe there.”

“Either way. We should send a messenger to warn them that Kazimir may be getting closer and that he is on the loose. And…that he has the Sidhe Staff,” dismay rang in his voice at the last spoken part. They couldn’t believe one of their prized possessions was gone. The wind mage stood up finally, having enough information. He hastily flew to the top of another one of the many church towers. There he waited for a messenger to emerge from the church. He kept a watchful eye and stalked the area under the cloak of invisibility until he saw one rider storm out of the cathedral.

Kaz kicked off the roof. Shingles clacked together and slid from the force. The small bits crashed into the ledge below that was part of a balcony. Luckily no one was there. The wind mage dashed through the air and landed from one roof to the next. The rider had no chance of outpacing the wind mage. He stalked him from above. Every so often the man would look up as if he could feel himself being watched or maybe it was paranoia.

Kaz abruptly spun around in the air and landed as he saw two church members and a few knights prowling the roofs as well. They hadn’t noticed him yet. His item made sure of that. Kaz slunk behind one of them. A quick turn may have had the two collide, but Kaz’s footsteps were true and silent. He eased around the guard.

“So far we are clear. No sign of the disturbance,” the church member said within earshot of Kaz. He could only assume that on some level they were still watching out for him or received orders to ensure the safety of the messenger. The wind mage dashed downward. The guard looked around, feeling the smallest puff of the breeze behind the wind mage as he departed.

The archways led out of the city. Giant stone marbles were carefully placed to gaze upon in prestige. The rider rode through without a care as if he had done this breakneck pace a thousand times. Kazimir darted out behind him, leaving the trials behind. But more than that, he left a statement behind him. The church would be after him now no doubt. But he wondered what the rune knights would do about it. They couldn’t send a detachment after him. Most likely some high-ranking knights.

For the next few days, Kaz stayed nearby to the messenger as they traveled. The time came to a standstill with the rider. And it was becoming a hassle to sneak away and replenish his mana. On the second day, they were well away from most civilized places and in the thick of the journey. The rider’s horse slammed to a halt. Kaz appeared before him. The rider nearly toppled out of his seat.

“Excuse me. Sorry to be so blunt but…would you like an escort?” The church member blinked quickly, bringing the mage into focus. Panic struck his face. He was one of the ones in the court proceedings. “That is unfortunate. Look. I don’t have much time. So if you could just tell me where it is you’re going. I can be on my way.”

The messenger shook his head, with a hand pressed against the letter in his inside jacket pocket.

Kaz sighed and rose his hand as the wind gathered around it.
