Atani was glad to be back in Astera. While exploring the rest of the west had its pleasures, she was sad to admit that the lands there didn't offer much. What lied within the boarders of Baska and Oak Town just didn't click with the Wood Elf in the same way mystical places such as Athalran did. There was a sad lack of nature and greenery. Baska came the closest to meeting her expectations, but that wasn't saying much considering the majority of its nature was large, open grassy plains. There was hardly a tree in sight, only coming to abundance at the town's borders. The forests there consisted of a melancholy collection of spirits. She had expected them to at least be as energetic as those in Astera's forests, but for whatever reason, that was not the case. Perhaps it was because she was visiting the town during the plague.

Well, to call it a true "plague" would be erroneous. However, that was indeed what the locals called the affliction caused by the notorious Cold Colliers' poison. At first, it only impacted the local wildlife population who drank from freshwater sources polluted with the poison. It drove these animals mad-- not quite akin to the behavior of rabies, but the hallmark feature of enhanced aggression was particularly troublesome. She supposed that could have been one of the reasons the nature spirits seemed out of the sorts, but either way, it left a bad taste in her mouth.

Atani had lived in Athalran when there were troubles in the forest. The behavior of the spirits residing within there was always a good indication for the nature of the trouble, but the behavior of the ones she saw in Baska's deciduous regions... it was hard to determine the precise case for them.

She was inclined to label their behavior as creeping towards lifelessness. They did not seem skittish or fearful of the infected animals who would doubtlessly go on angered rampages in their habitats. In fact, they seemed quite the opposite. It was like they were... apathetic. The elf's heart felt heavy from the mere thought of such kindred creatures losing the very vitality that defined them. The more she thought of it, the more she came to the fearful conclusion that these creatures were acting this way due to the presence of humans.

Atani did not know if the plains Baska was situated upon were entirely natural or not. The town had been established long before she and most of her elders were born. Though she supposed it could have just simply always existed in the state it was, she feared that some of the forest had been cleared to make room for Baska itself.

She supposed that she did see some evidence of habitat displacement. Wild boars, such as the ones who were among the first animals native to Baska to become contaminated with the aforementioned poison, did not traditionally roam empty plains. Rather, they preferred to spend their time in the shelter of forests. Though Atani was certainly no expert on the territorial habitues of wild boars, she couldn't help but wonder if this deviation from what she knew to be the norm was due to their ancestors roaming forests that used to be in that same general locale.

But she digressed. The point was, she was out of that town for now and was now in the place she called home. It was certainly no Athalran-- no other place in Fiore could compare-- but it was where her guild was. It was home to Lee, Zimra, and Throndil. It had a maritime ecosystem brimming with life.

Though Atani, like most Wood Elves, had very little experience on the waters, she found life under the sea to be fascinating. Though she often prided herself on her vast knowledge about wildlife on land, a simple trip beneath the waves showed the elf how little she knew of nature as a whole. Needless to say, returning to Astera thus filled the mage with endless excitement. Instead of being confined to the industrious streets of Oak Town or the boisterous markets of Baska, she finally felt free to venture wherever she liked in her guild's home. Here, she didn't have to stay in the town to find work. Jobs here often took her out to sea to deal with... well, virtually anything. From sea monsters to innocent creatures, or scavenging pirates to harmless fishermen. There honestly weren't many tasks to be accomplished from the townsfolk themselves. It was a stark contrast to other towns she'd been to.

In other towns, particularly in those that were occupied by guilds or other similar organizations, their residents were not shy when asking the local mage and adventurer population for miscellaneous tasks. Some of these did indeed require the help of people such as herself, but a surprising number of them could be accomplished by someone with as little skill as the asking resident themselves or at the very least their neighbors if they truly needed the extra hand. But instead, it became common practice for these folks to submit an official request for help with the exact sort of compensation they would provide for the service.

Astera, Atani found, had not yet quite adapted to this way of living. To the elf's knowledge, neither a light, nor dark, nor neutral guild had not occupied that location for quite some time. If it did, it was before her time in mainland Fiore.

Rather than asking for help in day to day tasks-- some examples of such the elf had accomplished were being a part-time delivery person for just a single day and finding a rare flower-- the residents of Astera typically asked for help when it came to larger issues. Sometimes this was quite literal in the sense of the word, as the type of job Atani had decided to take that day was certainly of that caliber. Not only was it an example of the magnitude of threat people decided to seek help for, but she quite literally had to deal with an infamous sea monster.

The creature had been dubbed 'Barrang.' She had heard brief mentions of this name from time to time in passing, but the way most spoke of it, she had assumed that this Barrang was nothing more than a myth; however, there were those who disagreed.

Adventurers would swear on their life that they had encountered this snakelike monster, only to escape on the skin of their teeth. Frankly, in the world they lived in, it wasn't hard to imagine that a gigantic serpent could be lurking in the shadows-- or apparently underground in the lands to the north of Astera. There was a certain trail that adventurers would sometimes follow. A striking number of them who went down that path were never to be seen again. Most of the blame was pinned on Barrang, but it was hard to tell if that was the truth or not. The tales of 'survivors' resulted in varied descriptions of Barrang. So varied, in fact, that the only conclusion Atani could come to about this monster she was hunting was that it was a large species of serpentine with pointy teeth and glowing eyes-- some reported red, others reported yellow.

In the end, it didn't really matter. This collector wanted to hire someone to take down the beast and bring back a trophy. Not only was he offering a great sum of money for evidence of having slayed the beast, but it would mean that in completing this offer, Atani would be making Aster that much safer for travelers, some of whom possibly wandered into Barrang's territory (and subsequently its maw) by mistake.

Atani knew she was on the right track when she started seeing warning signs posted. It warned inexperienced travelers to turn back. Hopefully, it was enough of a deterrent so that Atani would be able to encounter this creature on her own. The last thing she needed was for some novice mage or hunter to get in her way... because as good as her healing magic was, there were still moments where it could inflict pain instead.

Eventually along her travels, the ground began to shake beneath the elf's feet. At first she thought it might've been some sort of earthquake, but the rumbling was strangely concentrated. The vibrations progressively became stronger and were notably centered around her feet.

Atani heard the tales of how Barrang hunted his victims. Before it had the chance to burst out of the ground and eat her like the others, she dove out of the way. And not a moment too soon, for the giant serpent burst its head out the ground. Its jaws snapped shut, enclosing not the flesh it wanted to gorge, but a pathetic mix of dirt and air. It thrashed its head to the side and glared at the elf. She could feel its scarlet eyes piercing right into her soul. Barrang wasn't going to let its prey get away that easily.

Just before the serpent lunged, Atani waved her hand and dashed away.

What resulted from waving her hand was a stream of butterflies rushing toward the snake. Yes, butterflies. Specifically, butterflies made of moonflower petals that could pack quite the punch. Not seeing them as a threat, Barrang dove straight into the swarm. After all these years of effortlessly hunting humans with weapons and magic, butterflies were probably the least of its worries.

They initially didn't seem to phase the monster much. It pressed through the swarm, making a beeline straight for Atani. She lunged away as best she could, but the sheer size and speed of the monster in comparison to her small figure made avoiding the attack unscathed all but impossible without the use of defensive magic-- something Atani notably did not have.

One of the serpent's fangs grazed her arm. It cut like glass; the elf didn't even know she'd been hit until the wound began to burn. She spared a glance for only a moment.

The veins beneath the skin around her gash began to turn a sickening shade of green. Venom. Barrang's fangs were venomous. It was one of the qualities that the serpent was rumored to possess, but that was all Atani was able to conclude about it. Some swore they'd been 'attacked' by the creature without mentioning venom while others swore they knew someone (who knew someone, etc.) who knew it was venomous. Gods, how could she had been so stupid to forget such a thing.

Unknown venom was dangerous. There was no telling how it could impact her, but there was little she could do about it now. All she could do was hope that her healing magic would be enough to purge its effects.

To give herself time to cast the appropriate spells, Atani summoned her bow contained within the pocket dimension of her ring and fired an arrow at Barrang.

The arrow pierced the snake's scaled hide. Obviously. It would be an embarrassment to call herself an elven archer if she couldn't hit a target five metres tall.

It reeled back in pain. The arrow in its entirety disappeared due to its magical composition, leaving a small hole in the snake's skin through which blood slowly trickled out. The snake began to look as if it was recovered and ready to strike again, but suddenly the tides changed. Atani smirked as she saw Barrang freeze in place. Her moonflower attack was not just a one and done. There was always at least one floral butterfly that managed to remain on its target, continuously sapping the life force from it like a leech.

This was precisely what happened to Barrang. In its frenzy, it didn't realize it was reaching its limit. The light in its eyes dimmed and the massive serpent collapsed to the ground. The battle was done.

With a sigh of relief, Atani took a knee to the ground and buried her head in the palm of her hand in an attempt to gain some sense of stability. As the venom coursed its way through her bloodstream, the healer began to grow dizzy. The world swam before her eyes, but after taking some time to rest and applying an elementary healing spell, she gained enough footing to continue on with her mission.

She didn't have the strength to take Barrang's head, as was the classic trophy for these sorts of hunts. However, she could retrieve one of its fangs and instruct Gallard to the body if he wanted to collect more. Careful not to prick herself and introduce even more venom to her system, she extracted the largest of the monster's fangs from its tough gums and set it aside. She took another one of the fangs for herself and stowed it away for research purposes.

She returned to Gallard with his trophy and told him where to find the body in its entirety. She received her reward and left to treat the rest of her wound.
