Atani

Three pirate ships down. Atani still could not believe it. With all the talk that had been going on about how dangerous these pirates were, she would have thought they would have been more competent enemies. Perhaps all that beer and rum damaged their brain cells. The Wood Elf who had only resided among the humans for not that long had managed to trick pirates who had been sailing the seas for years, doubtlessly coming across all sorts of thieves and crooks along the way. Deceit was not foreign to them in the slightest, yet she was able to do so with surprising ease.

That being said, perhaps the more inexperienced and more trusting of the pirates would be so willing to recruit her. Although, she doubted she could pull off that sort of stunt again. The tactic she used was to infiltrate an infamous band of pirates who would be more cautious of mages than most. She only used it knowing it would have been worth it to get rid of their vessel and steal back the loot, saving her more basic strategies for the slightly less threatening of the bunch. Now, the pirates aboard that ship likely warned the others of a certain blonde haired Wood Elf who used water magic who was actually a light mage of sorts in disguise. Essentially, her chances of easily infiltrating the pirates were null. With that in mind, once she got back to her home, she retired her pirate costume. She stored her hat away on a shelf high in her closet and tucked away her leathers into the drawer where she kept other miscellaneous costumes, should the need arouse... Blue Pegasus really liked their special events, or so she's heard. And with their events, you had to dress for the occasion.

Her only hope was that the guild didn't call for anything too... Elaborate. Though Atani liked to look her best, she was simultaneously a creature of humility. Being excessively flashy was not her thing, though other members of Blue Pegasus seemed to have no problem with it at all. She simply did not share that sentiment with such other guild mates. Even that pirate costume was a bit of a stretch for Atani, but no matter. She wouldn't have to take up the mantle of a sea scoundrel anymore. Rather, if she wanted to deal with the pirates another way, she'd just have to do it in another form, perhaps her old ones, perhaps something new.

After getting dressed for the night, she tucked herself into bed. For once, she thought she would take a break from questing. After all, those last few jobs yielded her quite a large sum of jewels-- much larger than what she was used to in her everyday line or work. She could rest easy for the next day and perhaps even the day after. She could afford to go a third day, but that might make her a little stir crazy, lest she spent it doing something such as practicing her magic. Actually, come to think of it, that would make for a much better use of her time. She needed to hone her magic, learn to use new abilities. Maybe finally she could learn to rekindle her affinity for healing... Though that was something she was unsure if her new magic was capable of. She sincerely hoped that it was. It was not that Atani was not good at fighting-- though if she was being honest she wasn't as skilled as others in the guild-- it just so happened to be that she preferred not to.

Atani

That, of course, coming from the very elf who destroyed three entire pirate ships thus far. She didn't actively engage in battle though for the most part. She did it by directly harming as few people as possible, making sure the explosions really only impacted the bottom of the ship where she resided. Just enough damage to cause the ship to flood and sink, but not so much damage that a pirate would be unlucky enough to get a limb or peg leg blown off in the explosion. She was far more careful than that. Or at least... So she thought.

Atani fell fast asleep. When she woke up the next morning, she decided that she would finally go and try out that one café she had been meaning to pay a visit to for a while now. She ordered a chai tea latte and sat herself by a window to enjoy the sunlight. Nearby was a group of friends chatting among themselves. Their words faded into background noise. Gently blowing on the liquid, Atani brought the beverage to her lips.

"Did you hear about Black Flag?"

The elf nearly choked on her drink. She knew the pirates she had defeated just a night before were infamous, but why would they have been brought up? Surely their defeat wasn't that newsworthy. Their threat was mainly only known to sailors who were afraid of being raided, not for the general public. They never to her knowledge pillaged settlements on land.

"Yeah, and how their ship's flag washed ashore? Apparently nobody's seen them after."

"And how their ship was rumored to be blown to pieces?"

"My dad's a night fisher and said he heard an explosion and saw something burning in the distance last night."

"You don't think sharks could have gotten to them, do you?"

Atani

"Well, they do hunt at night so..."

It felt like there was a lump in her throat. The mage's hands trembled gently against the warm glass. Her head swam with dizzying confusion. Her stomach felt uneasy. They... didn't make it back? Of course they hadn't. They were so far from the shore, and their escape boat had also been caught in the explosion. She at least would have thought the explosion sounded an alarm for the Rune Knights stationed at Hargeon or even Hargeon's own law enforcement, but no. Had she misjudged the distance of the ship? Did the sound truly not travel far enough to alert people of what had happened out at sea? But most importantly... Had Atani let all the pirates go down with their ship? Into the dark, salty, shark infested waters of Hargeon only to drown or be eaten by the carnivorous fish.

Imagining it made her want to vomit. She asked the barista for her drink to-go instead and rushed out of the café. Panicked, she returned to her room, and paced back and forth. Periodically, she would take small sips of her drink. In between, she raked her mind over the situation. She did it so long her drink became cold, but Atani did not care. She had grown numb to the physical sensation of temperature at that point. The only things on her mind were the pirates she may or may not have inadvertently caused the demise of. No matter which way she looked at it, she was afraid that she killed the pirates. Even if it was accidental, it didn't matter. She failed to evaluate the situation properly. She acted impulsively. No matter how she sliced it, she was the cause of their deaths. She killed the missing members of Black Flag.

She couldn’t believe she had been so careless. Because of her ineptitudes, people were dead. She was furious with herself. Furious and ashamed. So ashamed she wouldn’t tell a soul of this. Not her guild, not anyone. Besides... nobody knew a blonde elf wielding water magic was responsible for this disaster, and it wasn’t as if the Rune Knights were tracking down whoever did this. The requests to handle these pirates never specified if they wanted the pirates dead or alive. All they cared about was if the stolen loot got returned and if the pirates were “taken care of.” To Atani’s knowledge, due to the severity of the pirate problem in Hargeon, these requests were open to any sort of mage. And of course, not all mages had the same moral compass. Some would kill without hesitation, be it for an extreme sense of justice or an extreme thirst for blood. Either way, Hargeon knew what it was doing opening the requests for all to take. If they wanted it done peacefully, it would have only been posted for Blue Pegasus’s taking.

At the very least, Atani was glad her identity was concealed during the attack. There were no witnesses other than the ones who were lost at sea, and she had returned the loot anonymously— It would have been suspicious to see someone dressed as a pirate carrying around stolen treasure returning it to someone; therefore, she had no reason to fear getting caught. Still though, that calming thought was not nearly enough to take away the aching feeling deep in her chest. She needed to prove that she could handle another situation like this responsibly. Not to her guild, not to the citizens of Hargeon, but to herself. Everyone else trusted her, but in her eyes they shouldn’t, not until she could pull her act together.

Pulling her act together, what a kind way of putting it. “Right, pulling your act together of murder.” She scoffed at her own thoughts. Even her own brain was trying to make a euphemism at this time, tricking her into thinking that what she did wasn’t some sort of horrendous act. But nonetheless, whatever her brain made of the situation, the solution Atani had was to prove to herself that she could take down another band of pirates without there being any casualties. First things first though, she had to make sure there was a request to take.

Frankly, Atani was surprised that there was one left for her. It was a bit later in the day than when she normally started her jobs, but perhaps she was naturally earlier than most. Come to think of it, there was never really a huge rush at the guild hall for taking quests. People did so as they pleased, and, well, Atani really enjoyed the work... and the jewels, but mostly the work. If she didn’t have her time occupied by something, she would go crazy with boredom.

Atani decided to ditch her disguised pirate method. It clearly had not put her in a favorable situation before, and she wasn’t about to risk it again, not until she had either a better hold on her magic or until she had a different plan that somehow did not involve her exploding barrels of gunpowder leaving several pirates to drown out at sea or be eaten by sharks or gods knew what. For now, maybe she’d just go with her old strategy. It seemed to have worked before. But this time, just as backup, she wanted to go and tell the Rune Knights of her plan. That way, if anything did perchance go south, she would have a backup.

Atani

Or perhaps safety net was the better term, but the technicalities of it did not matter. What did matter was that she finally had a plan, one that would hopefully be different from the rest. To look good in front of the Rune Knights though and to put a good name to Blue Pegasus, she couldn’t resort to her old method of blowing things up with black powder barrels, the very things that were used to fire the pirate’s canons. No, she had to do it ethically. She had to at least appear to have a good moral compass, one that held to the highest standards the value of human life and public property. She was lucky these were all taking place in the water, for she had heard tales of mages who got rather carried away with their jobs and ended up damaging the town they took the quest in. Due to being part of a guild, the responsibility of payments for damage were deferred to their guildmaster, so there was little incentive to keep their powers in check aside from not wanting to burden their guildmaster, but if they never got punished for their actions, at moral incentive was gone.

Atani was thankful her magic would likely never cause that sort of problem. In fact, she did the complete opposite of inflict damage, though the full extent of her water powers had yet to be determined. Still, aside from the new element, it didn’t feel different from her nature magic fundamentally. So until it proved otherwise, she expected it to behave similarly to her nature magic. Thus, she had an excuse not to worry the Rune Knights. She would conveniently neglect to mention all those ship fires she caused and instead introduce herself as an aspiring healer for Blue Pegasus.

Atani

From what she could tell, Atani thought her interaction with the Rune Knights went rather smoothly. She explained that she wanted to take down an enemy pirate ship, but would have preferred it if there were some extra personnel there at the scene to make any swift arrests. She made sure to note that she did not want them to physically be on the shore within the pirates’ field of view. Clearly, if Rune Knights were there, they would know that something was up and they had to flee. Still, they had to be in a spot where they could monitor Atani’s moves and jump in whenever they saw appropriate. They agreed to her plan.

With that extra reassurance, Atani felt much better about how this job in particular would go down. She didn’t like relying on the aid of others, but if it helped her avoid taking the lives of humans, then she supposed it was for the best. It wasn’t something she could rely on though, not for her future as a mage. Not even for her immediate future in dealing with these sorts of attacks anymore. She couldn’t rely on the aid of Rune Knights after this, not if she wanted them thinking she was a weak, insecure mage who was not deserving of being called the Sylvan Fay— it was still perplexing how she managed to gain this large of a reputation in such a short amount of time, but no matter. If she kept this sort of act up, the whole town of Hargeon would know her by this trivial epithet of hers. The Sylvan Fay, it sounded much better suited to nature magic, but no matter. They associated elves with nature as a whole. As long as she didn’t stop being that, which was impossible, she would always be the Sylvan Fay.

Atani

Much to Atani’s delight, this pirate ship just so happened to be one that was once again close enough to the shore where she would be able to swim to it no problem. Making sure she was well out of sight, the elf submerged herself into the ocean waters. A bubble of water formed around her head, enabling the elf to freely breathe just as well as she could on land. With Hargeon’s clear waters, it was easy enough for Atani to see where she was swimming. Soon enough, she arrived at the barnacle-covered hull of the ship. Cautiously, she poked her head out of the water to listen for pirates down below. There were most definitely some on the deck, but none that she could hear on the usual spot where she made her infiltration. Perhaps it just was not the preferred hangout for pirates— she did hear that being below deck for too long made people seasick.

So, seeing as the coast was clear, Atani dispelled her bubble and climbed aboard. Much to her surprise, the stolen treasure was not kept with the captain as usual. It was kept with the rest of the supplies below deck. Strange, but Atani wasn’t going to complain. The only issue now was dealing with the pirates themselves.

The solution? Brute force. It was the only thing she could come up with, but it worked. Once again it seemed that the pirates had been drinking. She was able to knock a few over the rails and into the water, and some others were knocked unconscious. Overall, it was a smaller crew than expected, and once she was finished she waved the Rune Knights over to make a proper arrest of the scoundrels. While they handled that, Atani went to return the loot they had stolen.
