In a few days Nuala Nazari would be travelling to Magnolia. Her guild’s mistress, Kaiser Bo, had requested her and a few others to be present at the beginning of the following month and it was almost time. Nuala was curious to see what Kaiser had planned, but for now there was more work to do in Dahlia. She wanted to travel towards the west afterwards, as she had a potential job offering that would also give her a change of scenery at the same time. There was nothing wrong with Dahlia, far from it actually, but she had been here for a while now and she was getting bored of it. Same couldn’t be said about the money she was constantly receiving from the huge amount of work that this city offered. There was somehow always something to do and the people here were always ready to scheme and plan. Their intentions were never good of course but the Voidling didn’t care. As long as she was paid - and she was usually paid rather well - she had nothing to complain about.

Nuala’s day had gone by rather slow, but this was also nothing weird. Usually work came in at night, when the normal people had gone to bed and weirdos like Adarian the Heretic came out to play. The old guy, who was also the leader of the Red Hades cult, always had some schemes up his sleeve and Nuala had never worried much about helping him and where all of this would lead her. She had always suspected that things would end up going well and if not her guild could always destroy the cult if they caused too much trouble. Murdering a few people here and there wasn’t really a problem either, considering that there were constantly people dying in Dahlia.

She honestly couldn’t even believe why anyone wanted to live here. Aldenwald was a serious problem and it was becoming the source of all evil for many people here. Well, maybe not the source of all evil but the source for most of it. There were so many werewolves in that damn forest, no matter how many she killed they just kept coming back for more. She had even gone with her guildmate Venus once, who had just blasted them away. But apparently there were already new job hirings asking for people, the members of the guild in particular, to help with sorting them out. Nuala was really tired of killing werewolves at this point. The beasts were strong, they smelled weird and they had a way of detecting her even if she remained perfectly quiet and was invisible. For someone who relied on sneak attacks like herself, this became a huge problem.

But at the same time werewolves had this thing where they were easy to kill because they loved to sleep under the open sky. It was much easier to sneak onto these dogs when they were asleep and didn’t even see the attack coming. Because of that, she would probably go and kill some werewolves again very soon. It was the most boring type of job, but it still paid more money than whatever chores she did for Adarian. She should probably ask him for a pay raise again soon, considering how easily he accepted her first demand. But aside from that, Nuala was at home at the guild and in her rooms. She had spent some time decorating lately to make everything look a little nicer and cozier. After seeing how nicely Venus decorated her room she figured she would make her own more comfortable as well.

But then again, it wasn’t as though she ever had any visitors over anyways. And the visitors that she wanted to have over weren’t allowed to come. Even if they did, they probably wouldn’t and Nuala couldn’t help that. Anyway, the night was looking out to be a boring one when she heard a soft knock at her door. Nuala got out of bed, walked towards the door and opened it. There was a small girl standing, a staff member that Kaiser had hired for the guild. She was a petite little thing, a little shy but happy to help whenever she could. She handed Nuala a deep red envelope with a black wax seal. “This letter has been dropped off for you just now,” she explained and excused herself. Nuala closed the door to her room and opened the letter.

It was the same type of letter that she had received from Adarian the day before and this time it only gave her a time, which was in one hour. Asking her to meet her again at the same location as previously – a house that looked to be abandoned, but was actually owned by the cult members. It was located in a street approximately forty five minutes from the guild but Nuala decided to take the horse instead so she would arrive much sooner. There was still some time left so the Voidling got ready and collected some stuff such as her weapons and what not before she decided to leave. Since she had been at the house before, which clearly served as some sort of Red hades Cult base, it didn’t take her any extra time finding it again and she arrived a bit earlier than intended. That was fine however, as there were already people waiting for her at the door.

Adarian was sitting at a table and Nuala took a seat as well so he could explain the situation. They were acquaintances at this point and there were some things between them that could be left unspoken, such as the payment and what kind of job she was willing to do. He already knew that by now and that's why he had hired her. “The situation is as follows,” he began the conversation and Nuala leaned back in her chair and listened. Apparently there was a mausoleum full of powerful bodies, which the Red Hades cult wished to have access to to bolster their forces. It’s locked with magic though and in order to break through this impenetrable lock they needed something called the Skeleton Key.

This is when Nuala’s ears perked up, because she hadn’t been a thief for almost twenty years for nothing! There were always rumours of a skeleton key having special abilities and whatnot, but even in a world of magic she didn’t believe all of those to be true. There had to be a limit in what an item could do after all. Adarian then said that something like the Skeleton Key could be created in order to open the flood gates to the mausoleum and he needed her to go and fetch everything for it. It was similar to what she had done on the previous day, so Nuala nodded and went along with it. Apparently he required three skulls: one from a bishop closely linked to his enemy, one from a murderer that caused the death of a loved one, and one from a child that was innocent until death. All three could be found in the cemetery of Dahlia City and Adarian was even so kind as to give her the names of the corpses that she had to find, so she could simply go around looking at gravestones.

Nuala left with that information and entered the cemetery. Ironically enough, one of the skulls belonged to the traitorous cult member who she had buried alive a few days ago – clearly he hadn’t made it. She had to dug him up again, much to her dismay, and remove all the disgusting maggots that were now eating up his skull and remove said skull from his body. This was an extreme hassle, but nothing Nuala couldn’t handle.

Next was the child, which had a pretty normal name. Adarian didn’t say anything about the child in particular, just that it had died and what the name was and that it had to be this child in particular. Nuala hadn’t asked any further questions of course. Nuala dug up the child’s grave and severed the skull, placing it into her bag with the first one before she moved on.

For the last one Nuala had to enter the church itself, which was where the bishop’s bodies were kept. They were kept inside a special sanctum underneath the church. Sneaking in and out was of course no problem for Nuala and thus she did it without alerting any priests or guards on patrol. Once she was inside the sanctum she searched around for the bishop Adarian requested, removed his skull and put it into her bag. Time to return to Adarian.

Nuala snuck out of the church again and quickly hurried through the streets. It wasn’t past midnight yet but lucky for her, the streets were empty. Once she arrived at the Red Hades Cult base, Nuala handed Adarian the skulls who candidly accepted them. He seemed completely unbothered by everything and excited to craft the key. Nuala was merely given her reward with a generous bonus and then asked to leave as he was now beginning the construction of the key. The Voidling did as she was told and left the man be.
