Kaz was seating in the dinner of a local market near the window. The guild hall was in view and sat high above the rest of the city. The long climb up the steps was a testament to the dedication of the members.

He sipped a small cup of tea and simply listened to the chatter what was happening around him. Slowly he began to piece together themes in their conversations. There was a shortage of fish but no one seemed to know why. Kaz set down his cup and it clinked on the small dish. The sound was drowned out by the entrance door of the cafe swinging open. The wooden door gave a thud against the concrete wall. A rail-thin man stood with heavy boots and a headband flowing down from his head to his shoulders.
“Is Kazimir in here,” he asked with a hint of worry in his tone. The words were spoken with haste and a quiver.

Kaz turned to face the man, “What is it,” he asked, pushing the teacup away from himself and standing to meet the man. The man smelled of fish and the sea. He crossed the room leaving the scent of water trailing behind like the tide. “This is gonna sound crazy but...ya see.” He looked around the room and cast all inhibition to the wind. With a gulp, he continued, “Me and the boys at the dock haven’t been able to catch anything. We think there is a monster in a cove that’s scaring away all the fish. Can you help,” the man asked while rubbing the sweat from his hands off onto his pants.

The wind mage put a hand on the man’s shoulder, “Of course I can. Let’s head to the docks.” With that the man and Kazimir rushed off towards the docks. The wind mage wondered what kind of creature it would be.

He hadn’t faced many threats at sea but being in a port town, that may all change now. The docks were filled with boats. Men sat idle on the sides and atop barrels. Their legs dangling in the wind with apathy. Others yelled out commands as they tightened the ropes on their ships to ready for sail. Those boats were no longer just fishing vessels. Instead of fishing pools and nets, they had harpoons and hooks. A man pulled back a harpoon, testing the power behind the draw.

Things were in a dire situation already. The fisherman with Kaz rushed up to one of the boats preparing to set sail. Seeing the guild mage, all those who sat idle began to stand and congregate. “I brought him. See we don’t gotta go.”

“Hells with it. It’s our problem,” the captain of the ship shouted back down. It wasn’t meant with spite he just didn’t want to waste the guild masters time.

Kaz waved his hand, “No. It’s our problem. Please allow me to go. There is no need to risk anymore. Plus if something happens to your ship, even if you do win, how will you live and provide for your men.”

The sailor grunted. “Fine. You’re right. You want us to take you there, Kaz.”

“Actually if you could just lend me a rowboat I should be fine. I have a griffon that can carry me a long way,"Kaz replied.

“So be it then,”
the sailor said with a laugh at the unusual mage. The old salty sailor waved his hand high at the others aboard the ship. A few crewmen moved to the side of the ship and began to untie some ropes. A ten-foot-long rowboat was suspended above the water. With every knot that was undone, it shifted and lowered a few inches. One man undid his last knot and held it firm in his hand as another dropped two oars across the benches in the boat.

The wood creaked as the final knot was undone and the boat swayed in the air. Its side tapped against the side of the larger wooden vessel. “Alright down she goes,” one of them called out as they all held their ropes and fed them up and over a pulley device, one hand crossing behind the other. The boat eased its way down, still gently tapping the side of the larger boat until it splashed into the water. The sea leaped up and sprayed the dock.

The sailor patted the wind mage on the back. An unspoken thank you and good luck. Kazimir stepped down into the boat. The last time he did this was a long time ago when the marine biologist needed help, but at least it wasn’t unfamiliar to him.

He grabbed both the oars in one hand and reached back to push off the dock. A sailor appeared and shook his head, “We got ya,” he said as two others joined him and they all grasped the side of the rowboat and gave it a good heave, pushing Kaz and the boat away from the docks.

The boat glided across the water. The air was full of salt and sea. Kaz grabbed the oars, each in one hand and eased them into the knicks designed just for them. One on his left and the other on his right. He gave one final look back at the sailors waving at him and he dove the oars into the water. They hit the resistance of the sea. It was thick like moving your hand through molasses. His back muscles tightened as he pulled his arms back, moving the oars in the water.

The boat lurched forward and he repeated. Each back and forth motion getting him further out. He leaned forward, extending the oars back in the air. Shifting his body backward, the oars dipped into the water and whooshed him onward. It’d be easier to use magic but he didn’t know what was in store for him, ahead. He had to be ready.

The rowboat was much slower than a larger vessel and it took an hour of rowing down the coast and out a way before he saw the small island with the cove. All seemed to be silent. The sun was high overhead and the water had become still aside from the occasional ebb and flow that rocked the boat a few inches left and right and up and down.

Kaz lifted the oars and placed them inside with him, taking a quick break. His arms ached a little. He certainly wasn’t built for something like this. He rubbed his left shoulder, feeling the soreness radiate to the other parts of his arm.

He exhaled as he leaned back in the boat. His back rested against the wooden end, pressing just beneath his shoulder blades. To either side of the boat was a school of fish that swam around and under him. They popped out of the water creating tiny splashes upon entry. The water sprinkled the boat and Kaz’s face and clothes. He remained still the whole time. His hands held the back of his head and his feet kicked out across the second benched seat. He rowed for so long he needed to stretch out his body.

The moment of bliss was only a few seconds as he leaned forward again and planted the oars, ready for his last push. The boat swam atop the sea, towards the cove. Nothing was in his way. The closer he came the darker the water turned beneath him. Each stroke moved him towards the unknown. Small mountainous ridges surrounded the water that created the cove. They were dark rock and covered with sparse out trees and shrubs. The rowboat wove between the two points of the rocks and into the cove. The water was clear right under him but only darkness was deeper than that.

As the boat pulled into the waters of the cove, fish still swam along with it and beneath it. It was peaceful but there was silence all around. Nothing made a sound. The small sandy beach was empty and there was a cave entrance to the left. It bored into Rockside and water from the sea flowed into it.

Kaz assumed that would be the best place to begin. He took the oars and rowed closer to it. The only sound was the splashing water he made. Not even the fish broke the surface of the water in longer.

The cave was dark. Moisture dripped from the roof of the cave onto the boat and Kaz. Seaweed waved along the sides. The boat moved in closer and the walls of the cave were only ten feet away from each other. Kaz squinted his eyes to peer into the distance. There didn’t seem to be any place to dock. It only led to a wall. A shiver went up his back. The only way seemed to be diving down.

He stood up, spreading his feet to keep balance on the rocking vessel. The sound of his boots hitting the wood echoed through the cavern. The remaining fish that swam beneath him, suddenly scattered out of the cavern back towards the light.

A bump knocked the bottom of the boat. Kaz crouched and held his breath. His arms fanning out wide to help him keep his balance. A slender figure bobbed from under the boat. Kaz held his hand ready to cast a spell. What emerged was a dolphin. He breathed a sigh of relief that changed to a gasp. The dolphin rolled over revealing it was mostly eaten. A large chunk had been taken out of it with a single bite. The rest of its body had claw marks running down it and puncture wounds.

Kaz braced himself once more as the water level rose abruptly. He grabbed the edge of the small boat that nearly tipped over backward. As the small wave lifted him an immense dark shadow filled the water beneath the whole cave. The walls that were ten feet apart out of the water, opened wider as the cave went deeper.

The boat lowered back down and Kaz stayed standing looking from left to right. Whatever had arrived filled the whole cave beneath him with darkness. He readied his hand once more and waited. The wind began to gather around him as he prepared his spell. The water surged again as the figure moved. A large tentacle sprung from the water next to Kaz. It was as thick as a man with suction cups housing talons. The tentacle whipped back into the water and rose up directly under Kaz’s boat, flinging it into the air.

Kaz groaned as the attack splintered the boat and sent him flying backward with wooden debris towards the entrance of the cavern.

The wind mage crashed into the water with a splash. His eyes opened for an instant, only to see the mammoth squid’s tentacles clutching at the sides of the cave entrance beneath the water and pulling itself closer. Its large eye aimed at Kaz. he meant to scream, but water filled his mouth. He clasped his hands over his mouth.

He had nearly forgotten about his magic in the moment. Kaz stepped his foot down and a rush of wind-generated and propelled the mage out of the water. He burst out of the water like a geyser.

Tentacles rushed out of the water chasing after the mage. Eight large man-sized behemoths whose lengths went to the deeps of the cove. They all bore countless talons. The water beneath the win mage sank as the creature opened its great maw submerged by the water as it filled its horrid beak.

The tentacle whisked towards a wide-eyed Kaz. He gulped in air and spit the water that had rushed in while he was beneath the surface of the sea. Seeing the attacks coming in the wind mage thrust out his hand and sent a jet of air out and sending himself flying backward. The tentacles whizzed by each other. The pink-hued menace close enough for Kaz to run his hand across but he dared not touch one.

The next tentacle flung at him like pythons striking and attempting to coil around prey. The tentacle reached him and began its wrap but Kaz kicked downward and sent himself upward once more as the tentacle clamped down on air. The attacks came in faster and faster as Kaz danced frantically across the wind to evade capture and injury. The mage flung a blade of wind outward, striking a tentacle but harmlessly ricocheting off into the sky. He clenched his fist realizing the difficulty that would come with this task.

A strike came in from behind. It smacked the mage in the back, “Argh!” came from his lips as he spiraled in the opposite direction. The blow was with the non-taloned side of the tentacle and sent him towards another one of the beasts arms.

His vision was dizzied by the blow and he felt a sudden suction on his right arm and ribcage. Then an abrupt stabbing sensation as talons burrowed through his clothes and into his side. He tugged at his arm but it wouldn’t budge. The suction cup only pulled tighter. The arm began to curl around him and he felt the heavy shift from the beast moving closer to the surface to enjoy a light snack.

Kaz shook his head, regaining his vision. With a deep breath, he peered at the lower part of the tentacle and exhaled a vacuum of wind. The shell struck the tentacle and burst into a tornado. The beast rumbled in the seawater, shifting the sea level and sending waves lapping across the shore. The suction weakened and Kaz swung his other arm sending a blade of wind to slice into the tentacle, cutting a piece from it. He yanked his arm off and pressed his feet and free hand on the tentacle. Bracing himself he gave push with all he had and yanked the rest of his body free. He dashed off again just as the tentacle came down for another attack.

He glared at the crazed beast below. A machine of consumption. With a mighty roar to the heavens, the sky turned dark and tornados rained down on the area. The wind swept the water about and ripped apart the tentacles. The Kraken revealed its body now that the seawater was pushed away. Kaz rushed down and swiped at a tentacle that came forward, splitting it with another tornado. Once close enough the wind mage put his hands together and sent one final whirlwind at the beast and took its life. The great beast bobbed in the water unmoving. With a whistle, the griffon returned to him and he mounted the animal and flew back to the docks.

The sailors were delighted to see him and greeted him warmly. He gave them the good news and they cheered. Telling them where the beast was they traveled out to recover its body. A shame something had to die but it knew nothing but violence and hunger. For the rest of the day, the sailors and Kaz enjoyed a night of merriment. They sailed out to the cove and tied ropes around the beast to bring it in for others to see the menace that had plagued them. They rejoiced for the sea was safe again but mourned the loss of a magnificent creature. It was a sight to behold. The Kraken lurched up to the shore, terrifying some and setting others at ease. Whatever was to happen now, it was up to the sailors. The animal had not harmed any of them so they decided it not right to eat it. Instead, they returned it to the sea for the animals it hunted and struck fear into. But now the seas were calm again and hopeful danger would not return to the small port.
