Akihiko
Breathe in, breathe out.

A faint sigh exited Akihiko’s body as he left the boss’ embassy. Lately, the bossman has been fixated with conquering land on Sieghart Mountains. Seeing as it’s of the utmost importance, he dispatched his top men to handle the job. Normally, Akihiko wouldn’t go out of his way for such a trivial task that could be taken care of by someone beneath him, but such is the fate of an ambassador. That and the boss’ demandingness.

His objective was simple, seize control of the Sieghart Passes. In the briefing, Akihiko was informed that a group of bandits currently inhabited the area. He was to confront the bandits and propose a deal, however, if they refuse remove them by force. He would leave out at twelve hundred hours alongside another ambassador. Failure was not an option.

Breathe in, breathe out.

“You’d think if he went through all this trouble to get me of all people to conquer some shitty routes, he’d at least trust me enough to handle it myself.” he said annoyingly.

Akihiko’s frustration was evident in the way he stormed off down the hall. At the end, he confronted his partner in crime as the floating island of Buntai made its descent.

Joshua Graham
Joshua stood at the edge of the floating island. He was looking out toward the world as the floating island made its way to the landing area. The cowboy carried a large cross wrapped in silks, it rested on his back, held by a single strip of the silk material. Joshua was used to the weight of it by now, though he couldnt use it one handed in combat. Holding and traveling with it was no issue. What weighted on him more was that it was still assosiated with the Holy Knights Order. Despite the year of time, Joshuas hatred for the Holy Knights hasnt faded at all. He pulled the lit smoking paper from his lips. the leaf inside made an acrid burnt smell that buzzed by quickly thanks to the wind.

The base landed and Joshua turned around to see Akihiko was there and making his way out of the base finally. He didnt like working with someone else much either, The idea of trusting his life to anyone besides Konstantin wasnt something Joshua was Prepared to do any time soon. He turned and took another inhale deep and heavy as he finished his smoke. He blew the smoke away and into the air as he flicked the paper butt away. He adjusted the cross on his back and turned to look at akihiko.

"Your Late, I hope its not an indication of how well your going to handle this mission. We have work to do and i cant afford for you miss your timing." His harsh and bittered eyes stared at Akihiko. As if judging him for something he didnt do. Joshua had the look of a man who was tired of living, despite his young age. His eyes Were filled with heartbreak and sadness that were hidden behind a layer of hatred and pure determination.

Joshua turned and left the base, falling off the edge as if he was expecting ground to catch him shortly after. But with a small ammount of mana, he activated the ravens ring and turned himself into the black feathered rings namesake. He floated down softly, and landed before turning back. He looked around the area, quiet and sullen. The grey black clouds above threatened to storm and rage.

At the island’s outskirts stood Joshua Graham, one of the founders of Sentinel Syndicate. He was a bizarre looking man who wore a cowboy get-up. His chin was adorned with dark, rectangular-shaped markings and he wore lime green lipstick. Up close, you’d realize his teeth were a deteriorating yellow – definitely not something worth showing off. However, what stood out the most was the cross-shaped figure lugged onto his back.

“So flashy. What is he, a religious cowboy?” he snickered as he thought to himself.

Just as he was about to introduce himself and elaborate on the mission, Akihiko was abruptly cut off by Joshua’s stern voice.

“You’re late. I hope it’s not an indication of how well you’re going to handle this mission. We have work to do and I can’t afford for you to miss your timing.” he stated.

As fast paced as their first encounter, Joshua glanced at Akihiko – his eyes cold and disapproving before he took his leave. Free falling off the edge of the floating island, there was a momentary pause moments before he transformed into a raven. He graciously soared through the sky as he made his way to the camp site down below. The two had never met formally since the guild’s foundation, but Akihiko had a strong feeling they wouldn’t get along.

“Tsk. Show off.” Akihiko said as he took the normal way down. Adjacent to the island was a set of magical steps that continued endlessly as you walk.

Akihiko came down in a lifeless manner, dragging his feet step by step. “The name is Akihiko. Akihiko Sterling.” There was a brief pause as he reached inside his left pocket to pull out a note given to him by the boss. “In my hand is the objective of this mission and what it entails. Either we convince the bandits to join up with us, or we get rid of them. It’s quite simple.” he said as he walked past Joshua – staring blankly into the sky. “The bandits are located deep within Sigmundir Passes. From the looks of it, a storm is coming. We can use that to our advantage and slip by undetected.” he stated – now staring out into the distance. He knew that the journey ahead would be a long and arduous one, and that they were pressed for time. “Look, I’m not sure why the bossman is so pressed about claiming this land, and frankly I don’t care. Let’s just hurry it up and get it done.” Akihiko concluded.

Joshua took the note as they went again at the camp sight. He read it before destroying any trace of it with his magic. The fire burning it into dusty ashes carried on the wind. He nodded as akihiko introduced himself. Joshua looked at the coming storm and nodded as Akihiko spoke.

"a decent idea, except your not thinking deep enough. As much as I like climbing mountains I dont like doing so when its preparing to flood. Right now let's just do some recon. Make sure we have them in a position that benefits us. Combat can come next, but first, we observe." Joshua fixed the cross he carried as he took a swig from his flask and handed it to Akihiko. The liquid inside was foul smelling and oily. "take a drink, it's a special herb that will help keep you full. We have a long walk ahead of us."

He would wait to see the boys reaction, and regardless of what it was he would put the flask away and make his way toward the mountain pass they needed to clear.

Akihiko stood by as he watched Joshua use his magic to burn the note to a crisp. “Ah, so he uses some form of fire magic. That’s good to know.” Akihiko thought to himself as he grabbed the flask that was handed to him. Its foul odor made it hard for him to take a single sip of the concoction; however, he tried his best in order to establish good faith in one another. Once he had his fill, Akihiko wore a vomit-like expression on his face and then handed the flask back to Joshua. “What’s in that thing, horse shit?” he joked as he tried to keep his composure.

Together, the duo entered the cracks within Sieghart Mountains. It was approximately one in the afternoon, and the weather wasn’t letting up. Violent winds accompanied by heavy rain poured down as they made their way through a long, rocky narrow path. There wasn’t a single living thing within sight, only a collection of rocks and the eerie sound of hollowed trees. Considering the conditions, the dried land’s vacancy may have seemed normal, but Akihiko had his suspicions. He called out to Joshua who was further up ahead.

“Something’s not right. It’s quiet…too quiet. Do you think you could use your wings to scout the area? I’d rather be safe than sorry!” he shouted. Already fighting against the wind, Akihiko shouted one last thing. “Be careful. Don’t go dying on me!”

Joshua stayed quiet as they walked the way into the pass. the wind began to howl as the violent rains cascaded down on them. the driving rain made their walk much harder. He turned as the young man began to speak, he was right it was too quiet. The canyon walls were still and unmoved, perhaps the young man was imagining things. But Joshua knew better then to assume that. He looked around keeping hius eyes open and wide. He saw the movement and reacted without speaking.

He grabbed the cross on his back and moved it quickly, the covering springing off of the cross and revealing the cross gun underneath. he placed it on Akihikos shoulder and with a single pull of the trigger fired out a bullet of holy magic. it slammed into the rock face, and shortly after the cameleon like creature uncloaked and fell to the ground dead. "Dont ever assume your safe enough to be alone. We work as a pair always." Joshua took the cross off akihikos shoulder and wrapped it back up. He turned and looked further ahead.

He turned and looked back at Akihiko. "Were gunna stick together, and make our way through. If it takes us a while, it takes us a while. This is their home base, we cant rush, otherwise were gunna end up in a trap." he stood up and put the cross back on his back. then he turned and spoke to Akihiko once more. "Dont fall behind. Your my eyes and ears back there and i need you at full attention. Otherwise, we both might get killed here." with that, Joshua kept walking. making his way inside.

Akihiko
Akihiko sat there amazed at Joshua’s skills. His keen eyes made him befit the title of Spymaster. Akihiko felt a great weight lift off his shoulders as Joshua wrapped up his cross-like weapon. To his surprise, it wasn’t an actual cross but a gun. “That’s a cool ass weapon you got there. You gotta let me try it, man.” he said excitedly. The atmosphere took a turn as the duo made their way inside the bandits’ camp. To their left were huts made of rocks and branches that were held together with mud. There must’ve been about five bandits idly talking in front of the huts. To their immediate right were hostages with explosive collars around their necks. It seemed like they were tasked with packaging valuables into barrels, although the reason why was unclear. Further up ahead was a shrine that sported the Rune Knight’s insignia.

“Call me crazy, but I’m pretty sure these so-called bandits are ex-Knights. Now I know we’re supposed to cut a deal, but they don’t seem like the type to follow demand. I say we cut our losses and take them out right here.” he suggested. Akihiko patiently awaited Joshua’s response; his decision would pave their course of action.

As they walked, Joshua listened to the boys excitement. And he couldnt help hut feel a bit of happiness creep to the surface. It warmed his face as the rain drove on. He walked and walked. Before finally he and akihiko arrived at the edge of the camp. They were safely far enough to not be seen and they could look down at the camp from their position. He undid the gun once more and set up using it from a kneeling sniper position. He leaned back to hide himself. He looked at akihiko.

"your absolutely right. They arent ones yo take orders. Those men arent just rune knights. Their leader is a former holy knight. After the War he went into hiding. I've been tracking him for a while now. But... I wasnt expecting him to have hostages." Joshua sat back up and took aim. He was center of the targets.

"Its time to make a Choice akihiko, they will use those hostages against us. But if we detonate the collars we can take out the whole camp, and keep ourselves safe... You are a member of the syndicate now Akihiko, you know the rules of the guild well enough yo have earned the title of enforcer. So what will it be? Risk our lifes to save some unknown hostages with no strategic value... or do we sacrifice them to accomplish our goal with ease and safety. You pick."

Akihiko felt the intensity radiate off Joshua’s body. Once more he undid the wrapping on his cross-like weapon and got down into a prone position. He would watch as his associate hid his presence – ready to kill. Sterling hated being put in these types of situations; the fate of the hostages was in his hands. Akihiko was no God – he had no right to decide who lives and who dies. “Killing all of these innocent people makes us no better than them. Yes, we are Sentinel Syndicate, but we aren’t murderers.” he said accompanied by a sigh. “Look at their necks. Those collars are installed with lacrimas, so maybe if we destroy them, they’ll unlock.” he continued.  Akihiko firmly gripped his steel sword at his side. “You just watch my six. I’ll take care of the bandits.” he finished.

He stealthy approached the huts that the bandits had been talking in front of from the side. Akihiko reached inside his pocket, grabbed a coin, and flicked it into the air. The coin landed directly in the center of the bandits – their bodies now alert in response. He whistled to get their attention. “How we doing today, fellas? Good? Well, that’s great. I’ll cut to the point, whoever picks up the coin lives.” he said calmly. The bandits looked at each other flabbergasted – each of them rushing off to attack. However, Akihiko anticipated this and assumed a sha no kamae position.

“Soaring Flash Step.”

Akihiko immediately dashed into the air, leaving a trail of lightning in his midst. At the climax, he threw his steel sword at the bandits down below. The sword caught itself in the cracks of the earth beneath them – it was far too late. “Purge.” Lightning struck all five of the bandits and they fell to the ground. Akihiko fell back down to the ground using his strong legs to support his fall. He walked up to his sword and pulled it from the earth, then approached the coin and picked it up. "Your loss." he said as he twiddled it with his fingers.

Joshua sighed as Akihiko protested his order. But he didnt move as Akihiko tried to stand up and head down. But before he could even get that far, the sound of the cross gun firing could be heard, before quickly and suddenly the entire camp was awash with fire and flame as the exploding collars were set off. Joshua stood up as the Crimson and orange cloud and light filled the air then faded, leaving nothing but a scorched crater and burned destroyed corpses. Nothing survived the explosion from the collars, and the small camp was now nothing more then a burnt stain.

Joshua stood and looked down to make sure there were no survivers. His expression was cold and calculated. It was as if he didnt see their deaths as a human death. Just another target, another order. He wrapped the cross and turned as he put it back on his back. ”Take this as a lesson, those who are not in the guild are not important. They are stepping stones and barriers to get to where we are headed.” he turned and looked back at Akihiko. “I hate to tell you this, but you are just stupid and eager and sincere enough to make the kind of officer that men love to follow into some silly predicament. Dont let that remain. Your men will die for you now, but what you want is for them to live for you…. Lets go, we have more work to do after we report back”

Akihiko

It all happened so quick. If it weren’t for the sound of his coin hitting the ground in disbelief, Akihiko would’ve thought he was dreaming. He stood there and watched as the scorching flames devoured everything within sight. The hostages’ bodies were burnt to a crisp, men and women alike, unrecognizable to the eye. The pungent coppery, metallic smell of the corpses filled the area – the blood conjoining with the remnants of the collars. A crater the size of a meteorite was etched into the ground, and vast amounts of smoke polluted the air. This was real.

As Akihiko began to fall to his knees the noises around him started to fade. First it was the crackling sound of the fire, then the wailing screams of hostages who had survived the explosion, and finally – silence. He shakily looked up at Joshua who had seemed to be talking, but his words couldn’t reach his ears. Tears began to form in Akihiko’s eyes as he glanced down at the blood on his hands.

“It’s my fault…” A sharp pain in his heart caused him to loosen the grip on his tie.

“Their lives were literally in palm of my hands, and because of my foolish choice they’re gone.” he said sobbingly.

Akihiko clenched his fists tightly out of frustration. Certainly, this wouldn’t have happened if he were more cautious, right? Maybe if he focused on the hostages first, this mishap wouldn’t have happened. Blindly, he directed his anger to no one other than his partner. He approached Joshua and grabbed him by the collar, his eyes filled with rage. “This is your fault! Who told you to shoot their damn collars off! They could’ve lived!” he yelled. After letting all his built-up emotions free, Akihiko got down on one knee and recited a prayer.

“In company with Christ, who died and now lives, may they rejoice in your kingdom, where all our tears are wiped away. Amen.” he said. As he got up, Akihiko eyed Joshua down – his contempt for him obvious as they left the scene.

Exit.

Joshua watched as the explosion came and left. The screams faded into silence. He felt a small guilt rising to the surface, how could he not? he was still human after all. He couldnt help but feel guilt for the lives he had ended. But that guilt was tiny, and quickly dissipated as Joshua compartment-ized it. He had no other choice but to. He may have been a Spymaster, but he likened himself more to an Assassin and a Hunter. He could not allow his mind to hold the guilt, it would ruin him if he did. He was suddenly grabbed by Akihiko and yelled at.

after the boy was done and had walked away, Joshua stood there for a moment adn that guilt rose again. But he stomped it back down quickly. Instead, he found himself smiling, Akihiko, for his credit, had stood up to him and made his point. But more importantly, he had felt the anger of true failure grow in his heart, joshua could tell just from his reaction alone. But he knew this would be for the better. Now, in all things he would hopefully strive to never fail like this again. It was perhaps the only lesson Joshua could truely teach him that would matter in the end.

He also couldnt help but see a bit of himself in Akihiko, in his passion and his fire. With more time, and perhaps a few more failures and tempering struggles, he would become a strong and sharp blade for the Syndicate, and more importantly, for his dreams. Joshua turned back into a bird, and flew away to the base. he didnt turn normal until he was back.
