Daisuke stood at the doorway of the Rune Knight’s meeting room with a lump in his throat. Though he had been a Captain for some time, this was the first time that he had been summoned to a Captain’s meeting. “It’s just a meeting, Daisuke. You know these people.” he says to himself before taking a deep breath. It was showtime. With a sigh, he enters the room and is greeted by five other captains sitting at the table. Many of them he had known during his time with the lower ranks of the Rune Knights. They were men he respected greatly. Teachers, mentors, men he would willingly lay his life on the line for. To his mild amusement,  among these men was his old comrade Darius who had also risen to the rank. He had heard rumblings of Darius’ exploits since their old academy days but this was the first time he had seen him in quite some time. Darius spots him shortly after Daisuke does and a warm smile spreads across his face. “Been a long time Daisuke.” He says as he gets up to shake Daisuke’s hand. “Likewise. I see you’ve gotten a little stronger and a little soft around the edges.” Daisuke says playfully as he taps the man’s stomach. The two catch up for a moment as they were still awaiting the appearance of the Captain Commander so the meeting could begin.

They discussed a myriad of topics like Darius’ recent mission to apprehend a fugitive in Desierto and Daisuke’s own mission in Hosenka. “Do you know what this meeting is about?” Daisuke inquires during a brief lull in their conversation. “No idea. I heard about this presumably around the same time as you. He only asked for a handful of us though which is concerning.” As the two men pondered, the door opened and the Captain Commander strolled in. Still dressed in his red armor, he moves to the front of the table as all Captains, Daisuke included, stand up to salute him. “At ease…” he says as he sits in the chair, the rest of the room following suit. He places his elbows on the table, puts his hand together and sighs deeply before beginning to speak. “Unfortunately, we have a situation that if left unchecked, may endanger the entirety of Earthland.”

An uncomfortable silence falls over the room as the Captain Commander begins to speak once more. “There are rumors that a cult-like dark guild based in Western Fiore has begun to make moves here. We are unsure of their objective but whatever it is needs to be stopped. Our sources have located a safe-house of theirs in Era. The reason why I’m only calling on Captains to deal with this as there are rumors of a few S-Rank mages inside.” Irritation spreads across Daisuke’s face and vice-like grip on his chair tightens  as he hears the Captain Commander speak. The young Captain had a relatively negative opinion regarding dark guilds due to varying experiences he’s had during his tenure with the Rune Knights as well as the stories, and accompanying injuries, his father would bring home after dealing with them. He also remembered the last dark guild he encountered was responsible for the horrible treatment of Merry. He silently thanked himself that Merry was with his mother and didn’t accompany him today. Daisuke abruptly stands up, his grip crushing the arm rest he grabbed, and faces the Captain Commander. “Point me where to go.”

In the dead of night, Daisuke and Darius move towards their destination, flanked by the rest of the Captains in the meeting. They were all fully equipped, ready to use whatever magic and weapons they had available at a moment’s notice. The plan was simple: infiltrate the building and detain all hostile forces. Given that all of them were at least S-rank mages or the equivalent, they could each handle a section alone but decided to do so in pairs. For now, they had the element of surprise but knew that once Daisuke drew Galantine, that would be gone. As they reach the base of the building, Daisuke raises his hand up to stop those behind him before pointing to the right. Without missing a beat, two of them splinter off to the right while the others went to the left, leaving Daisuke and Darius alone. Once they were all in position, Darius turned towards Daisuke. “Are you ready for a show?” He says with a smile as he withdraws his golden spear.

A thunderous boom is heard echoing as Daisuke kicks the front door down, Galantine drawn and at the ready. The brightness of the sun engulfs the building with light as the teams rush in and begin to detain the opposition. As Daisuke and Darius rush in, a blast of dark magic barrels towards them. “I got this!” Darius says as he stabs the point of his spear towards the blast, dissipating it entirely. “What weapon is that?” Daisuke says to himself as he briefly admires the weapon. He shakes it from his mind for the moment as he continues forward, quickly thanking his partner before firing off a wave of flames from Galantine towards the source of the blast. The two of them work in tandem as they knock out and successfully detain anyone that comes near them. Their teamwork seemed to be in sync, comparable to the levels of what he and Misora could accomplish. Before long, the bottom floor was cleared of all hostile individuals, leaving only the two Rune Knight Captains standing.

“Not half bad. Seems you haven’t been slacking after all.” Daisuke says as he briefly admires their work. “Did you really think I’d let you surpass me?” Darius says with a chuckle as he places his spear on its resting place behind his back. As the two begin to herd up the detained mages, a blood curdling yell stops them from above. Both Captains stop in their tracks and begin to sprint towards the stairwell to reach the source of the yelling. Both with weapons drawn and a mixed look of concern, fear, and anger on their faces. As they run, they are joined by the team that went to clear the lower floor. As they arrive at the upper floor, they see the massacre in front of them. The bloodied bodies of the two captains sent to the upper floor lay in the middle of the room. Below their mutilated corpses was a message written in their blood capped off with a smiley face: ‘Better luck next time.”

One hour later, Daisuke and Darius stood outside of the building and watched as other Rune Knights led the detained individuals out in mana-restricting cuffs. As they were all loaded up and taken away, two more Rune Knights emerged each with a rolling bed with a large white sheet covering them. Daisuke physically grimaces as he sees the beds, internally fighting the urge to look away. He needed to see this, to see what he perceived as his failure. As they loaded up the bodies and departed, Darius turned towards Daisuke. “Don’t put that burden on yourself. They knew the risks of this. Unfortunately, we all do.” Daisuke, ignoring the statement, clenches the handle of Galantine so tightly that his knuckles turn white. “I’ll personally go to their homes and inform their next of kin. Then, I’m going to personally hunt down and bring every single bastard associated with this cult to justice. However long it takes.”
