Nuala hadn’t taken on a proper job in a long while. She wasn’t in the mood lately, which wasn’t unusual for the thief. There were two ways for her to make money, and since she was a member of a guild, most of the time it wasn’t uncommon for her to take on a simple quest or run an errand for someone else. It was far from her usual occupation, which was that of a thief: but when there was no proper loot to be gained, Nuala would often find herself taking on more normal jobs from the citizens of Oak. She wasn’t sure if this did anything for the guild’s reputation and Eternal Nightmare’s presence here in the West, but that wasn’t exactly a concern of her’s anyways. If anything, Nuala wanted to make good coin and it didn’t matter how she would do it. In the past few months, Nuala had been rather lazy and living off her savings however, not that there was anything wrong with that. She had plenty and living at the guild didn’t cost her anything either, so the daemon had taken some time off from life all together. Being immortal meant that time had little meaning.

Still, she was now itching to find some work again as she was bored staring at the same walls every day. Nuala had spent the last few weeks going through her collection of books - a number of books had accumulated and it had taken her some time to read through all of them but now she had finally finished and figured that it was time to maybe purchase some new ones. There had also been other purchases that she had made lately. There were rumours of a mysterious merchant wandering the realm and every now and then, he would pop up somewhere and sell some of the strongest, most mysterious and even questionable items that one had ever heard of. Nuala had made a few purchases with said merchant already, and she had even bought an eye from him and exchanged her own for it. This eye was allegedly capable of copying magic spells, although Nuala had never tried if that actually worked. She would give it a try sooner or later though. For now, she was more interested in trying out the weapon that she had bought, which was a dagger. A strong dagger, suit for a rogue like her.

However, there was something odd about the weapon. It was powerful and enchanted with unique magic, that made the holder of the dagger almost invincible - or at least that’s how she felt about it. If Nuala had to fight an opponent with such a weapon, she frankly wouldn’t know what to do with herself. That’s why she was lucky that she had gotten her hands on it, although it had cost her an arm and a leg. The merchant had recommended the weapon to her and after he had told her all of its unique properties, Nuala had agreed to the purchase. It was an opportunity that she simply couldn’t let sit, but ever since she carried the weapon on her hip, she had felt a strange aura coming over her. There was a sudden urge to do certain things that simply hadn’t been there before. Nuala had never been much of a killer and preferred to sneak in and out of places without much trouble or drama, but the dagger had changed all of that. Now, she considered a quiet sneak in simply killing all the guards to keep them quiet. It was very effective.

Back in the day, she usually would try to avoid killing as there was no need for unnecessary blood shed and murder, but nowadays, especially with a dagger this sharp, she felt as though killing was often the easiest way to get to where you wanted to be. Especially when it meant that you could silence the people around you and that was clearly the case here. Not that it mattered much for Nuala personally, her infamy had been growing regardless and the guild would never fault her for it. Eternal Nightmare, luckily, was a dark guild so everything that she did that was unethical or immoral only added to their growing evil reputation. Besides, Odin wasn’t exactly an angel either, the former lich would have no trouble defending her if it ever came down to it. Staying out of sight from the rune knights was a whole different issue of course, but at least Nuala continued to be bounty free as she worked with much care and made sure to never be caught or make any mistakes during her missions. It was simply how she was. For now, she was packing up her stuff to visit the nearby church.

Not for religious reasons, of course. Nuala knew that the pastor at the church was often struggling with supernatural events happening down at the catacombs underneath the religious building and while he hated to ask for help from Eternal Nightmare, the guild was the only one around and Nuala always did her work clean and within the night. Besides, the pastor did pay her a good sum of money to keep those haunted grounds underground and those spooky ghosts away from his church. She had already told him that it was unlikely that the spooking and haunting would ever stop unless he actually removed all the bodies down there and burned them down or whatever, but the pastor had already told her that it wasn’t possible for ethical reasons and that they had to stay. It wasn’t really her problem since that simply meant a steady income, although she had heard of other people coming here to battle the same problem, all with the same results. It would be quiet for a few days, maybe up to a week sometimes, before the spooking would start again, as there was no way to permanently get rid of spirits. You couldn’t kill ghosts after all.

The road to the church wasn’t very long, a cozy 20 minute walk across town. On her way, Nuala stopped by a bakery and got her favourite snack - a chocolate crossaint. It was even on discount because the store would be closing soon as it was already in the afternoon. Bakeries usually didn’t open very long, since it was more of an establishment that people would enter during the early hours of the day. Nuala happily munched on her food while she was on her way to the church. She knew she would be in there until the wee morning hours again, since it was always like that. The ghosts just kept coming until the sun was back up and she would be locked down there and fight them to make sure every last one of them was sent back to oblivion. Unfortunately, they would always crawl back out, but sometimes it also took them a while to recover from the attack. Nuala had also noticed that the way she attacked the ghosts didn’t really make a difference. They responded to both magical and physical attacks the same, so it had nothing to do with her being a nomage.

Besides, after speaking with the pastor, she had learned that other mages had visited, some with incredibly powerful magics, and they all had been equally successful as her. Which meant they were able to shoo the ghosts away and stop the haunting, but only momentarily. Nuala knocked on the giant church door and then entered. There was no one left at this time of the day as she always made sure to come after the last gathering. Nuala was a demon after all and while she could enter this church no problem without bursting into flames, she didn’t want to run into any worshippers of illumin or god knows who - because she didn’t want to have that reputation. Her immortal blood was known to the pastor and he knew that she was born human, but hadn’t been human in a very long time. That had be enough. Anyhow, Nuala entered and approached the pastor, who simply nodded at her. “Same as always, I suppose?” She asked and he gave her another nod. “It’s been quiet for a while, but last night they were out again. Nothing unusual, but it still disturbs the villagers.” He handed her the keys to the catacombs.

Nuala nodded and gave him a smirk. He always looked so incredibly uncomfortable when talking to her - it made her smile. The pastor was a middle aged man, who clearly hated that he had to ask for the help of a dark guild to get a matter relating to the church solved, but she hadn’t been blind either. For someone who did all of this without any monetary reward, it seemed that the church itself seemed to have a good amount of coin. The pastor always paid her very generously and Nuala was curious to find out where all that money came from. But oh well, maybe another time. She took the keys, turned on her heel and waved him goodbye. “See you in the morning. Have my money ready by then.” He confirmed and she went back outside and walked around the church. There was the graveyard and next to it was a door, that could be opened and lead down a long corridor. At the end of that corridor there was another door that led down a seemingly endless amount of stairs until they reached one final gate to the catacombs. Nuala grabbed a torch and went on her merry way.

Instead of starting at the beginning like she always did, Nuala walked down and deeper into the catacombs. She knew the layout well by know and knew that the first ghosts would start showing up after sundown so she still had a bit more time left. Nuala often thought about how she could be more efficient in her work style and had eventually come to the conclusion, that starting at the very bottom of the catacombs and fighting her way back out through the night meant that she didn’t have to walk all the way back to the door since she would be back there once she was done. If she did it the other way around, she would always have to walk alllll the way back from the depths of the catacombs back to the entrance since there was no shortcut and that took an unnecessary amount of time. It was a casual stroll that took about 20 minutes and by the time she arrived at the end, she was surrounded by coffins and had already pulled out her two daggers and crouched down to take on her usual fighting position. The first coffin creaked.

She knew that this was her sign to start her little assault. Thanks to the mythic dagger she now carried herself, Nuala was once again completely soundless - an ability she had lost when becoming human and transitioning over to daemon, and she was glad to have some of her former abilities left. The ghosts didn’t seem to notice her as she slashed through them with her daggers and whirled around from chamber to chamber, repeating those movements while staying quiet and impossibly unseen throughout the whole ordeal. One by one, they were sent back to the netherworld, where they would rot until they eventually found their way back home. It wasn’t a quick process by any means, due to the sheer amount of ghosts and creatures that there were, but after a few hours Nuala found herself finished. She couldn’t hear, see or feel any more beings that needed killing, and since she was already back at the entrance gate anyways, she could leave immediately. It was much faster than usual, thanks to her new technique. The pastor, who was still up, also noticed this - but he had her money ready as promised and Nuala took it with a smile.
