Atani

For what it was worth, Atani didn't find Oak Town to be nearly as bad as the rumors made it out to be. Yes, it was true that the cultist dark guild known as Eternal Nightmare resided within the town. And yes, with the town came lots of crime. But honestly, Atani couldn't say that she felt unsafe there. Even as a light mage from Infinity Wolves she couldn't say that she felt unsafe. It wasn't as if she was going out of her way to stir up trouble in the underworld that she figured more or less governed who was truly kept safe on these streets. Whenever the elf did travel to Oak, she made sure to keep to herself and only take on jobs that wouldn't get her in trouble with the wrong crowd. Some of her favorite such jobs have been dealing with the spirits beneath the church.

What she accomplished was a win-win for everyone. Ghosts and spirits of all sorts didn't tend to discriminate on who they disturbed as far as their good versus bad alignment went. Hell, if she managed to inadvertently help out the very people she wasn't supposed to be affiliated with in the first place, then maybe she'd even start getting on their good side.

But... that was being wishful. She didn't expect anyone associated with crime to become too trusting of someone from a light guild just yet, but she supposed it was better than if she were a Rune Knight. Hell would have to freeze over before she found herself among their racist ranks, but one key difference otherwise between her guild and their faction was that they had an obligation to arrest wrongdoers. She didn't. She actually couldn't legally do anything except contact the authorities about someone being unlawful.

For the elf, she was quite content with that. It was how she far preferred to handle situations. From what LeeAnn told her about her time in the Rune Knights, it was filled with restricted freedom and paperwork to fill out after trips and arrests. If you were higher up, then there were even more administrative duties to do. Maybe that's why she was so content with being the Guild Master because she was used to that sort of stuff, but not Atani.

Travelling throughout the lands taking whatever job came along her way, that was more her speed... Even if it meant some of the jobs were rather unsavory. The one she found on the request board was a perfect example of that. She didn't quite understand why this thing was approved in the first place, but she supposed it didn't inherently break any laws. It was just enabling.

This man named Rander Baston was the local smith for Oak Town. Rather than attending to his shop's needs, he found it a better use of his time to go out for a drinking contest. While he was at the drinking contest, he wanted to make sure that his shop was protected by a qualified mage, for there were lots of valuable weapons and metals stored within the walls of his place. Evidently, it wasn't just the contents people thought were valuable, but it was the store in its entirety. One of the crime families in Oak Town-- the Martellos-- were trying their damnedest to get Rander to sell, but their idea of trying meant roughing the man up until he was forced to sell. If he went to the drinking contest and left the shop unattended, he feared it would give the gang the perfect opportunity to cause trouble.

When Atani went to the shop herself, the shop owner didn't explain much more than what was already written on the request itself. He just reminded her to be extra careful of trespassers on the property, after which he left in pursuit of that sweet, sweet drinking contest he just had to put a request out for. With that, Atani was left all alone in the shop that had the 'closed' sign flipped to face any wandering customers on the outside. Now, she supposed, it was just a matter of waiting.

For a long while, nothing happened. The only sounds her elf ears could pick up were the creaks in the old wooden floor boards and the regular commotion from passersby on Oak's streets. For an hour it seemed that her presence there just wasn't necessary. Atani glanced at the clock mounted on the wall. It couldn't be much longer.

It couldn't be, right? Well, maybe. Rander never did say when he would be back. Looking at the man he was, there was no doubt in Atani's mind that he could hold a lot of liquor in him, and who knew how drunk he would have to get before he decided it was time to call it quits and head home from this drinking contest of his. This job could end up taking the greater portion of her day, but at least she was getting paid well for it.

Some more time passed and a strange noise finally piqued the elf's interest: a faint hissing noise that she probably wouldn't even have picked up on if it weren't for the close laughter that accompanied it. She glanced out the window and saw some shadows over by one of the shop's walls. She ran out the front door, but the bell must've tipped them off.

Atani

When she ran out to see who it was, there was no one there. Whoever they were, she figured they were kids. There was fresh spray paint across the exterior, which Atani was able to wash away with the help of her nature magic. It was hard to tell if this was that gang activity Randal had warned about or if it was just some kid pranksters having fun while they saw a shop was closed. Either way, Atani sincerely hoped that would be the last of her troubles, but she later found that was not to be.

Three identical thugs came by the shop later that same day. She didn't believe they were the same ones who were snickering over spray paint, because they brought knives with them; however, their amateur skills were no match for an S-Ranked mage. Though she wasn't as strong as other mages, Atani defeated them with ease and received her reward by the time Randal returned.
