PERSONALITY

Personality: Varis is a curious young man with a good heart, and rarely shies away from those who need help in some way. He likes to enjoy the small things in life whether that’s to appreciate a particular scenery or even sitting down and listening to the musicians play their music. Varis likes to read a good book when he gets the free time in between jobs with a cup of coffee as his companion. Coffee is something of a luxury to Varis to which he takes the time to appreciate when he is able to. Overall he seems to be a relaxed, confident, and proud young man who doesn’t appear to be in a hurry for anything. Which seems to make himself appear older than he really is.

However, as previously stated he is a curious man with an adventurous mindset. Braving the depths of both known and unknown regions of the world whether it’s to finish a job or simply exploring out of pure intellectual curiosity. That being said, Varis also extends a helping hand to those who appear like they need help. Whether they’re lost travelers, injured guild wizards, or even trapped dark wizards. Not to say that Varis is a pushover when it comes to insults, but his default approach is to help those who need it. Even if they didn’t ask for it.

Likes:

  • Cats: Listen, just because he might appear to be confident doesn’t mean he hates cats. In fact Varis even adores them and sometimes is spotted feeding the stray cats on the streets.
  • Coffee: Varis likes the taste of coffee to some extent, and often he mixes cream and sugar into his drink. It’s just something that he grew accustomed to from being influenced by his father. Despite what people think he often drinks at least one cup a day.

Dislikes:

  • Heights: He’s never been good at dealing with heights. Least to say the mountains and Varis aren’t exactly a good mix.
  • Supernatural: From Varis’s understanding, the supernatural as a whole is a problem. Caught in the seemingly never-ending war, and countless lives have been swallowed up in the midst of these clashes. He generally doesn’t have a good impression of them.

Motivations:

  • Seeker: Varis lost his sibling due to seemingly unknown circumstances. For only he knew and believed what had really happened. So Varis is determined to find his lost brother, wherever it would take him.

Fears:

  • Heights: Varis has a major fear when it comes to heights. If it’s something like a 2 foot drop, not much of an issue. If it’s 10 feet or higher? That’s where his instincts drive him to safety, or worse freeze in place.
  • Hand Mirror: Mirrors in general trigger an unsettling memory in Varis’s mind, but what makes it worse is not that mirrors hold any magical effect on him. But rather the memory of a menacing presence, the feeling of helplessness that took his brother away, that is what Varis is afraid of happening again. Specifically, hand mirrors are the ultimate triggering point for him as it was actually the source of his childhood trauma.

HISTORY

History: Varis grew up in a not-so-friendly environment given his half elf heritage. His father was a wood elf while his mother was a human. However Varis never met his father, or at least he never recalled a memory of the man since he disappeared from the family before Varis was born. Varis had a little half brother who was a full human, but Varis didn’t care and sought to protect his little brother from whatever came their way. Varis didn’t make any friends, not real ones anyways as they always turned against him when they’re questioned why they’re playing with a half elf. He was furious, and for a while Varis didn’t associate himself with the people and disconnected himself from everyone except his mother and little brother.

When Varis was 14 however, a series of tragic events occurred that changed his life forever. His mother’s birthday was coming up, but as they struggled with money she rarely bought anything for herself. Varis broke out of his shell to work any labor that he could get ahold of and saved up money to buy her a present and a small cake. This made it appear to his little brother that Varis was going to end up like their mother and worried to the point where he followed after Varis when he went out to work. Eventually this was discovered by Varis, but instead of scolding his little brother. Varis instead invited him to join the search for a present.

They concluded that they should wander over to the magic shop where they browsed for any Magic Items that were unique or at least appeared to be appealing. Turned out that there was such a thing, a hand mirror of silver that had a magical effect of bringing out the best of the person who looks at it. Varis thought it would have been nice, and his little brother agreed. So he purchased it, wrapped it up with a name tag on it. Then when their mother came home late from work they surprised her with a small birthday party with essentially a cupcake that had a lit candle and the wrapped up mirror. The night was filled with joy as their mother loved both of her sons dearly.

However, that's when trouble began to stir. Varis’s brother complained of hearing whispers and scratches on the floor. However there was nothing of note nor could they see anything. As the nights went on, Varis started to witness a dark silhouette in a misty-like form that he could never make out. But it was always accompanied with a putrid smell similar to decay. The activity grew worse as thumps could be heard, banging doors, and even the lights would flicker. Both Varis and his brother were on edge.

When both of them sought counsel from their mother, she dismissed it as the house was old and that there was nobody else in there except for themselves. Then, whatever entity it was, grew violent in the next few nights. One such incident involved Varis's brother who was taking a bath, and Varis was in his room just down the hall from the bathroom. However Varis kept hearing voices, muffled whispers coming from within the wall as he was trying to read a book. Curious, and frightened he was, Varis pressed his ear against the wall to hear a chilling message. A female voice, dripping with venom, hissed from behind the wall. Insinuating for them to get out before Varis was unexpectedly shoved across the room and broke his wardrobe.

Varis was mortified, but that was quickly replaced as he heard his brother's screams followed by rapid splashes. He rushed to his brother's aid, but Varis thrust open the door. It was pitch black and it suddenly went eerily silent. Varis remembered his heart was pounding for it was the only sound he heard aside from his own breath. He remembered that it was so cold that he saw his own breath. With a shaky hand, Varis brought out an equivalent to a flashlight to shine a light in the room, and he saw the silver hand mirror that was floating at chest level suddenly dropped to the floor. Varis called out for his brother, and when there was no response he mustered all the courage he had to take a step inside.

Varis remembered smelling the decay that filled the room, and how he felt like someone with intense glare from the shadows with a malicious intention. When Varis picked up the mirror, there was a face that appeared for only a moment, a fleeting glimpse that Varis would never forget. A feminine face with long, dark hair, but her skin was blue like she was going through a severe hyperthermia. Yet there was tears along her face that revealed the muscle tissue underneath, and her bloodshot eyes were wide with such hatred and such bloodthirst that was unlike anything he experienced. However, the most terrifying part that remained burned inside of his memory, was when the face made a wide grin with the corners of her mouth clearly slit open accompanied by a disorienting chuckle. Then with a glass shattering shriek, the dark silhouette lunged itself at him and all Varis remembered was the cold, thin hands gripping tightly around his neck as he found himself thrown to the floor. Varis panicked as he was being choked by whatever entity this was, and out of his panic Varis punched the entity's face harder than he intended as the jaw went slack open due to the dislocation. Yet when the face turned back towards him, it wasn't that haunting face that he saw, but instead it was the face of his mother who's eyes were wide as saucer plates in shock of what she was doing. With shaking hands, she removed her hands from Varis’s neck as her usual near golden skin was drained of all color upon the realization of what she almost did.

Just like that, the lights in the bathroom came back on to illuminate the room. However there was no sign of his brother anywhere, and Varis questioned what had gotten into his mother and where did she take his brother. She had no recollection of what's been going on and admitted that she's been experiencing lapses in her memory. Like they're blocked, and occasionally experienced blackouts. All there was left, was the hand mirror that continued to lay at the center of the room. Out of parental hatred, his mother took the lid of the toilet off, and she was going to smash the mirror to pieces with it.

In their horror, the menacing entity had reappeared once more as the lights dimmed as a cold, thin bloodied hand snatched the lid out of his mother’s hands and smashed it against the wall. Nearly hitting Varis in the process had he not moved out of the way. His mother turned around and moved her hand in a gesture to cast a fire spell. But the entity had also snatched her wrist in the middle of the gesture as she felt an iron grip hand clenching down on her throat. She struggled to no avail, and Varis tackled the entity to the ground as a horrifying shriek attacked his ears. Varis didn’t care as he held her down to the ground while demanding to know where his brother was.

All he got in response was that wicked smile on her face followed by a menacing giggle. Then everything went dark and Varis was thrown off. He heard his mother scream for only a moment before it suddenly shifted into coughing and wheezing. Varis frantically tried to navigate through the darkness, but then he heard a terrible sound of bone that was completely different than popping. His heart fell to his stomach as he felt dread and sorrow before he called out for his mother. The room lit up again to reveal his mother motionless on the ground, and with her head twisted to a 180 degree turn and had the frozen expression of agony on her face. The hand mirror was gone, but suddenly Varis felt hurt and alone beyond comprehension as he shed a never-ending flow of tears.

Years had passed since that tragedy, and there was still no sign of that hand mirror, entity, nor his little brother. All three mysteriously vanished that night, but the same nightmare continued to plagued his dreams. Varis took up the wondrous job of being an Adventurer despite not having magic of his own. Seeking jobs from finding lost pets to even exploring the wilds. Anything to keep Varis busy, and more than once Varis helped the locals. Many took it out of kindness, and while it's not a lie, the truth of it was due to guilt for being so helpless to protect his family.
