Atani

Atani had not wanted her last job to go so poorly. It was not fair that the wolf had to die such a painful death. All she wanted to do was knock the wolf back far enough that it would not be a threat to the sheep. Then, she was going to bring him to a swift end; however, in the dark she had not seen where her spell was going to take the wolf. It went flying into a broken fence that she hadn't even realized was there. She couldn't believe herself. She was so... so careless. The elf's impulsivity took over and what resulted was something she never wanted to happen.

She needed to learn control. It was something she thought she had gained a hold on with the other spells she learned, but perhaps that was the problem. This idea of 'control' came too easy. Control initially meant mastery of the technique itself. She could procure a stable spell and have full control over it magically. She didn't, however, have control over her own mind which ultimately guided every spell she cast.

Maybe, the elf thought, I just need some more experience. That's why she was in Marigold, wasn't it?

Not just to help others outside of Hargeon, but to help herself grow as a mage, for even healers needed to know how to limit their powers. It just seemed she ran into that problem sooner than expected, but perhaps that was for the better. If she were to discover this flaw in a more difficult quest or in a real battle, she would be in a much worse situation than she was in now. Lucky enough, it sort of worked out in her favor by being the driving force to completing her job with Farmer Jim.

The next day, Atani decided that she would complete another job. Specifically, she wanted to seek one out that would likely require her to use her magic. Luckily, there was one that seemed to fit the bill. Fernando De Syllas, the ruler of Marigold City, put out a request that called for mages and adventurers of all kinds to deal with some bandits who have been pestering local shop owners for quite some time now. They were active at night and made off with stolen goods. Nothing she hadn't dealt with before. But perhaps it would be best if she handled this discreetly.

Which, of course, meant handling it without the use of her magic. Although she wanted more practice and aimed to take a request that would give her such practice, the piece of paper in front of her eyes changed her mind. As she tore it off the board, she realized that it would be safer to train outside of the scope of a job. Besides, control in magic would have to start with control in herself, control in her physical body. Shifting through the shadows at night and engaging in combat would be good practice for that, she imagined.

All that was left was to kill the time. She couldn't do anything about the situation until nightfall, and at the time it was unfortunately still early in daylight hours. For something as simple as this, Atani did not need all day to plan. She didn't even know if she needed a full hour to do so. She knew how to stalk bandits, and she knew from the quest details approximately where they would attack next. She wouldn't even allow them the opportunity to break in. Looking at the number of culprits on the quest, it could be a challenge preventing them all.

However, if she managed to arrive early enough at the right location, this 'challenge' would be more like child's play. She was in all technicality an S-Ranked mage. Any quest like this should be child's play for mages like her, but it was hard to feel like one of the highest ranked wizards when you were missing over half your memories, not even knowing what you were capable of. Not even knowing how to achieve what you previously were capable of. She was recognized as a strong mage, and she knew she was just from the sheer amount of magical energy she possessed, but tapping into that deep pool of mana and turning it into spells... She essentially had to start from scratch. And from the fruits of her previous quest, it wasn't hard to tell how poorly that was going.

The more she thought about it, the more she settled on the conclusion that it really would not be best to practice her magic recklessly during this quest. She didn't want to accidentally cause damage to the storefront in her attempts to stop any bandits. Besides, it's not like she needed to use her magic. Contained in her ring was a bow.

She could do far more damage with that than a controlled spell. That much was true at this point in time, and she was far more capable of controlling her arrow shots than she was with controlling the water element spells the Wood Elf was still very much new to. So, it was settled. Magicless combat it would be.

Time passed and night fell. Atani hid well in the shadows. Once the streets were deserted and all the locals had gone to bed, it wasn't long before the bandits made their move. Atani was waiting at ready. They were getting close to the store when the elf let a warning shot fly. It thudded against a wooden barrel. Most of the bandits scattered, but one remained. Perhaps the leader of them? The only one who felt he could stand his own in a fight, that was for sure.

Atani revealed herself and notched another arrow on the string. She released it. It zipped to impale his shoulder. She used that opportunity to lunge forward and knock him out with a swift blow to his head. The nearby guards heard the commotion and went to see what happened. Atani explained the situation to them and showed the request Syllas put out. She was promptly rewarded, and the elf left the scene.
