The sun was up, and the sky was clear. A perfect climate blessed Port Astera that very morning. A cool 18 Celsius degrees with a mild breeze refreshed the citizens of the western region. Walking along one of the busy streets of the port was a blue haired male. Kenzo was in a good mood that morning. Living in Bellum. He had grown close to the coastal region of the inland great black sea. It was an inland body of water the size of a whole country. It was a place bustling with trade between Bellum, the Peregrande Kingdom, Desierto and Iceberg. The young boy remembered with happiness the days when his father would take the family fishing at the ancestral Valens summer house. He and his father would spend the whole afternoon catching fish with improvised fishing rods while his mother would cook them for dinner. Those were some happy moments that he had yet to forget. Today, he would finally get to fish after many years.

Kenzo had heard from the innkeeper where he was staying about a nice fishing spot in the coast. It was a place where the currents of the sea were pretty calm, so he didn’t have to worry about the lack of fish. Apparently, it was a popular spot for casual fishermen to spend the day. In the keeper’s own words. ”I swear that even a baby would catch a fish if they throw their rod in that spot”

The idea was compelling for Kenzo. After all, he was certainly rusty after so many years without practice. It would be a nice way to kill the free day that he had that afternoon. With this in mind, he purchased a fishing rod and went to the streets to put his plan in motion.

As he made his way to the piers, he could smell the salt in the air get denser. It was just as he remembered it. Even if the Black Sea was not an actual continental Sea per se, it had the same feel to it. Little by little, he could see the horizon of the sea expand further as he grew closer to the coast. ”Good day” Kenzo greeted a couple of fishermen that passed by. They were fully outfitted for the last fishing of the day. He wondered if they were simply starting their turn since their uniforms seemed too fixed up to be from someone that had surely made a couple of hauls through the morning. Greeting strangers was something out of character for the mercenary. However, something about his good mood made him take that stupid decision. The silent response as both fishermen made their way hurriedly past him reminded him why he never did so in the first place.

”Rude” The word was only he muttered to himself as he made a mental note not to go out of his way again. He was a bit puzzled over their apparent bad mood, but he didn’t care about the reason if he was honest.

Either way, he finally reached the place the innkeeper had told him about. It was a spot near the piers of the city. A small cobblestone path guided his way along. It was neatly organized with grass and flowers. Large palm trees were planted every 2 meters and had grown to over 5 meters tall. It seemed like the spot was quite popular with the people or perhaps tourists, seeing how neatly organized everything leading to the place was.

Placing the bait he bought from the seller, Kenzo threw his hook and waited.

Oh boy and wait he did. Ten minutes passed by. Then fifteen and then twenty. Not even the slightest of indications of something falling to his line woke the blue haired swordsman from his ever-growing annoyance. He was starting to question whether the inn keeper had told him the truth or not. Perhaps he had forgotten how much patience was needed to fish, he was a small child after all. Either way, he was having a long talk with the mustached man when he returned that night.

Kenzo was so absorbed in his attempts of channeling his inner ki through the air and make a fish fall for his hook that he failed to notice the elderly woman coming near him. She slowly made her way to his right as she struggled keeping straight with her crane. Just when she was right next to the failure of a fisherman did Kenzo finally noticed her. ”GAH! What the hell old hag?! You nearly give me a heart attack.” Kenzo jumped in the spot as he unconsciously threw the rod into the air and down the cliff. With a saddened face, he finally accepted his defeat as the wooden rod crashed with a rock and sank into the ocean.

”*Sigh* God damnit…” he was definitely not fit for fishing after all. The woman had remained silent next to him as her hands trembled over her crane. She was so wrinkled that it was impossible to notice whether she had her eyes open or closed. Heck, Kenzo didn’t know if she could even speak as a matter of fact. ”So what’s up old one?” His words were directed without expecting an answer. However, he received one that cheered him up.

”You see… it is not your fault… No one in town catches fish”

The woman’s words puzzled Kenzo greatly. ”What do you mean?” he asked back. The old lady seemed to be really sweet. The I’m a sweet grandma kind of sweet. Her words managed to lift the young swordsman’s spirits only if a little bit with as he looked at her trembling body. The woman opened her mouth as she tried to mutter some words. However, all that Kenzo could understand was the following: ”Huee.. huee.. huee.. hue hue hue hue… Git gud son” The woman instantly threw her cane away as she took a pair of dark glasses from her pocket and put them on. With vitality that came seemingly out of nowhere, the old lady rolled her sleeves and took out her fishing rod. A tattoo on her left shoulder became visible as she threw the line into the water.

[i]”Fish or Die”[/color] a heavy metal like school with crossed bones filled the bigger part of her arm.

Kenzo was speechless, he was still unsure as to what had suddenly happened. Before he could mutter a single word though, he was surprised by an instantaneous pulling tension in the old woman’s rod. After struggling ferociously with whatever beast she had caught, the lady hauled the biggest fish Kenzo had ever seen.

With a smug look on her face, the lady lowered her glasses as she spoke with an obnoxious tone.

”Such a scrub. You’re just like the rest of the fishermen in this town blaming the sea creature near the cove. According to them, its presence is scaring all the fish. Scrubs all to the last one of them.”

Leaving those words in the air, the mysterious old lady disappeared as soon as she had appeared, dragging her pray in a red cart with wheels. Kenzo had been totally defeated.

Refusing to leave things this way, the mercenary made his ways to the docks to ask for information. Much to his annoyance, what the old lady said seemed to be true of every single fisherman in the coast.

”I’m telling you, it is that damned beast in the cove. All of the fish have gone away.”

”I swear I saw it with my own two eyes. It ate all of our prey with a single bite…”

”It’s been days since we last caught a fish. That beast is gonna drive us to bankruptcy”


”I don’t care anymore!! I’ll go and hunt the beast myself. Who’s with me?”

It would seem that a town-wide council of fishermen had formed in one of the unloading platforms. Where once tons after tons of fish were carried off from boats and into the market, not a single fish had passed through the spot for almost a week. All of the fishermen blamed the so-called sea monster for their bad luck fishing. However, this simply made Kenzo all the more frustrated. The idiots were confirming the smug lady’s theory. After all, he had seen her catch an enormous animal just some minutes ago.

However, it was also true that the expedition to hunt the beast was now in full force. Taking a look around, the young Advent World swordsman noticed the war potential of the party. If his experience wasn’t failing him, the group of 20 fishermen would at most be able to complete an equivalent of a B-Rank quest, and with heavy losses at that. He couldn’t simply leave them to their luck now that he saw the passion in their eyes. They were all failures as fishers. They had a strong bond now.

”Leave this to me. Pay me a day’s worth of fishing and I’ll take care of it.”

Some of the fishermen protested, but in the end all of them agreed. Word had gone through the streets about Kenzo being in town. He had defeated the fearsome Barrang a couple of days before after all.

In the end, they let him kill the beast. The fight was done quickly and swiftly. A single strike from Masamune was enough to cut the Kraken’s head. He now needed to take revenge from the old lady. But how?
