Kaz tucked his recently purchased scroll into his robe as he made his way back toward the guild. He was making his way through the Sieghart mountains. Word around the locals was that these lands had become frightfully unsafe. The wind mage kept a sharp eye out. He was far from where he considered home.

Traipsing through the mountain path he lifted himself up the large rocks and held onto trees for balance. A group of pebbles cascaded down the sloop and washed over Kaz’s feet. He heard a faint shuffling up ahead. As he drew closed he saw a man, barely able to stand and groaning with each attempt. The wind mage ran to his side and placed a hand on his back to ease him to lean on a tree. “What’s wrong?” Kaz asked

The man was gasping for air. His breath was heavy and his handheld his side, concealing part of the claw wound that dug in deep but not fatal. He shifted himself against the tree to breathe easier than before.

“There is a werewolf. We are normally at peace with them, but this time,” the man lifted his hand letting the blood trickle out. “It attacked me. The villagers are in danger. Please. We need your help. If you can get someone. Anyone to help us. Mages, knights anyone that will.”

Kaz looked down the path then back to the man. His hand went to the man’s shoulder. Kaz grabbed the man’s bloodied hand and put it back over his wound. “Keep pressure on this. I’ll go and check it out. I’ll make sure they are safe.”

The wind mage stood up and began to walk off. Cameron called out, “It’s not safe. You’re just one man. You’ll need help. If I wasn’t so wounded I would go with you.” The man said as he coughed up blood into his palm. His face flushing white from shock and fatigue.

“Trust me. It’s not a problem. Just point me in the direction.” Kaz replied. The man raised his good hand and a quivering finger pointed down the path and to the left. It was a small and narrow trail.

Without looking back at the man, Kaz walked down the path. He had never dealt with werewolves before. The dirt path was well worn. Along the sides of it were bits of blood droplets and snapped twigs. Any decent tracker could tell what happened, how many and where it was going. He knelt down to examine a large footprint. It was one animal, large in build and moving fast. There was no time to waste.

Kaz jumped up and raced down the trail, pushing limbs out of his way and jumping over logs and brush. It was a mad dash against time. He could see the village in the distance. Nothing seemed to be off yet. The village was surrounded by large wooden pools closely tied together and stuck in the ground. The gate was made of the same but could swing open to allow entry.

The gate to the village was shattered. It clung to its hinges and flopped haphazardly against the ground. Kaz ran to the entrance and put a hand on one wooden stake and slowly stepped over the busted gate.

Inside the village, screams bleed against his ears. His heart sank as villagers flooded through the dirt streets and slammed doors shut. Others made a reckless rush towards the gate, knocking over clotheslines, buckets and trinket stands along the way. They fell and buried their faces in the dirt, clawing their way back up only to more fear and panic.

The wind mage met them and helped one to his feet, “Get to safety. I’ll handle it.” Without question, the man ran by Kaz and slammed the door to his home shut. Others crowded the mage and scurried on the ground behind him. Their hands clutched their hearts and pulled at their hair. One man mumbled over and over again. “It can’t be, it can’t be.”

Kaz put his hand up for them to fall silent. He pointed at a house, “Follow me.” He said as he kept his eyes and ears scanning the area. He strafed toward a house. A woman opened the door once they were a few feet away. The people dared not stray far from the wind mage. Kaz kept his hands up and out, ready to tackle whatever came.

He clapped his hands together and let his senses spill out into the area around them. He could feel all of them moving behind him and then one more presence, more domineering than the rest. His head started to turn to face it but he held it still with only a brief twitch. He knew if he moved it would alert it and put them in more danger.

They got to the house. One by one the people began to filter in. A blood-curdling howl froze them where they stood. Clawed feet scraped the top of the roof. Kaz whirled around to look. The werewolf was standing above them. Its massive fur-covered body blocking the full moon behind it.

It pounced from its perch. Its claws were razor-sharp and still aimed at the citizens. Its snout opened wide to ensnare whatever didn’t fall by its claw attack. Kaz shoved the rest of the people in the house with his left arm and with his right he thrust it toward the wolf. With a swiping motion, a whirlwind of air sprang to life and sent the werewolf howling in pain now and crashing to the ground. It was fast but Kaz was faster.

The wind mage dashed across the grounds before the animal rose and with a blade of wind. It was finished.

As the werewolf laid motionless, Cameron staggered into the village. “Thank you thank you. We have some savings. Please take these you have earned them.” Kaz refused at first but the villagers would not accept no. He gave Kaz a bag of jewels and pumpkin pops.
