An odd and sinister hobby of the vampire was collecting "dolls," living beings he enchanted and manipulated. Eelzad was to be his next acquisition, a fate that promised eternal torture. An unexpected ally appeared in the form of an aged seref-a warrior of Ripple Magic who was too old for battle but not for rebellion. Perhaps moved by Eelzad's plight, the seref passed on to him the knowledge and power of Ripple Magic, seeing it as the only chance for him to fight back and escape. Under the tutelage of the elderly seref, Eelzad mastered Ripple Magic, a discipline developed by vampire hunters to combat darkness using the purity and energy of the sun. In an attempt to end the vampire's reign of terror, Eelzad orchestrated an assassination attempt. Even though the attempt was ultimately unsuccessful, it caused enough chaos to allow Eelzad and a number of serefs to escape. To avoid capture and ensure their pursuer's efforts were scattered, they split up after their daring escape. With the weight of his experiences and the magic bestowed upon him, Eelzad made his way to Fiore. Driven by the shadows of his past, he became a mercenary to start anew.
