Erebus

The soft wind blew against the lone enigma as it stood ominously outside the gates of the arena. Cloaked in black, with a hood thrown over. Erebus waited, his presence was intimidating to most other mortals, as he was nearly X-rank, and arguably the most skilled rogue in the continent. The most powerful? That was likely Nuala, but even she didn’t have the same war bred skill that Erebus has had to master.

Today however, he was helping a new rogue in Nightmare’s ranks. You could say it was to team up, but really it was more like supervision and inspection. He did this for most newer recruits but EN hadn’t had any in awhile. Nana was a mystery, but from what he could gather off her info in the guild’s logs was that she fought similar to him before he became god•like. So the curiosity got the better, and here he was. Waiting for her to arrive, should she show up, he was to aide her in a little sparring with the local fighters.

But for the most part, Erebus was here to watch and take note. Perhaps even motivate the fledgling rogue. Beyond that, he was much too powerful for this level, revisiting it was just for fun and some quick change.

Nana

Nana had been associated with the Eternal Nightmare guild for a long time, ever since she was barely more than a child in fact. She had been unofficially adopted by the dark guild as a child. Now that she was old enough to be officially recognized and a proper mentor had been chosen for her- an enigma of a man. She had not seen much of his true potential, but she had heard stories. Maybe some embellished, or maybe even modest accounts. She did not know for now: all she knew, was that he was good with a blade.

Today was a day to celebrate- in a sense. Nana would get to complete a quest with her mentor, even if it would mostly be him sitting on the sidelines and critiquing her performance. Either way, she had just arrived at the arena and spotted him near the entrance, waiting for her no doubt. She had already planned to be there a few minutes early, but he was still there before her.

She would wave to him when she was quite close, as to not draw unwanted attention. She would be garb din her typical attire, mixed clothing with semi-revealing pieces that exposed her legs and tummy. Her bright green hair drawing attention even if she didn't wish it to. "I'm here senpai! Ready for action!" she would say exuberantly, uncharacteristically of a rogue. Despite her rough childhood, she had retained her joyful spirit.

Erebus

The human merely tilted his head in the direction of the voice that called out to him. Senpai? Oh jeez, not one of these again. Erebus thought with a soft exhale, he turned and stood facing her as she approached. Erebus was shrouded behind his visage, only the markings on his face under the shade of the hood would show. If she could see his eyes they were a deep red in the iris, Erebus walked around clad something like a Sith Lord. He wore the Courpsemourn a cape that allowed one entry and exit of Purgatory. His covet was designed to make him unavoidable, and beneath his cloak was an armor that released a moving smog dome that blinded any unwilling victims who failed to outrun the smoke’s god-like boogeyman.

Erebus had a thick accent to him, something sweet to the ear by but foreign and unplaceable. When he speaks, his charm seems to lull those that hear it. Smooth like silk, so smooth it couldn’t possibly be anything pure or good. Erebus was a real serpent in human skin, a predator and territorial being. He was marked all the way around his body black tattoos, symbols and shapes, and unlike any normal human. The Rogue possessed four arms and was slender but toned in a way you knew he had strength in shape. Only two of his forearms ever showed out of combat, so not to scare off or set off the senses of prey to the danger he carried or presided. Beneath his coat, the spare arms hung lifelessly at his sides or were crossed when he was observing a situation. Right now for example? They were cross, and so was he.

“Hello there Nana,” Erebus finally said after she arrived. His words seemed to penetrate the air and cause a certain intensity that otherwisely wouldn’t have been there. “Today I judge your progress,” he explained and pointed his long black fingernail to the arena, pivoting to the side to open up her sights of the huge coliseum entrance. “You’re going to show them Oak City’s finest, Eternal Nightmare’s rookie. Or.. I’m leaving you in Baska. The choice is yours.” Erebus chuckled, amusing himself. He began to walk towards the gates— stopping only to scribble his signature against the entrant sign-ups as he awaited Nana to head inside behind him.

Nana

His demeanor and body movements barely changed when he recognized her greeting- rather, she simply turned in her direction and waited for her approach without replying. Only once she was within close proximity had be bothered replying at all- smooth cold calculative but also endearing in its own way. To others, he probably seemed rude: suggesting he would abandon her here and now if she failed his expectations, but she also relished in the challenge. She knew she was weak. Under his tutelage, she knew that she could become stronger, much stronger.

She wasn't too certain about 'finest' but she would definitely give it her all. She was not innately talented with magic, even if she did possess quite a lot of mana for someone her age and skill level. A natural talent maybe, or hereditary effect from her parents' heritages. Her eyes met his, her own color hued between purple and red. She smiled with a wide grin that instantly changed her boisterous face into that of a cold blooded killer who enjoyed the hunt. It was there for almost an instant and then gone again- replaced by a lackluster serious expression that likely made Erebus doubt her sincerity.

Despite her seemingly carefree attitude, she had come prepared. Wearing the makeshift beginners gear she had acquired. A helmet, chest armor and a couple of solid steel daggers. Unlike most magic-gifted people, she chose to fight with weapons since she lacked in the magical area. That was the reason Erebus had been chosen to test her and train her. She knew that if she disappointed him here, she would have a difficult time finding another tutor who could show her the real potential of adventurers.

Her senpai began to move towards the gate entrance as he chuckled softly. She followed on light but spry steps, close behind. She waited her turn and then scribbled her name down int he entry form.

There were quite a lot of people here this day, but that was not uncommon. People from all over town and even the country came to such places for various reasons. Some wished only to spectate and cheer for those they knew or admired. Others were more daring and sought richest or power from risking their lives.

Killing was generally frowned upon in public events such as this, but still possible. Sometimes opponents just didn't know when they were beaten and gave their foes little to no choice. Nana didn't plan on being one of those in the former group- rather, she had no hesitation when killing her foe- though she didn't plan to make it an obvious rouse. She had heard stories of revenge by close friends or family- still very much a possibility, but if she had little choice, it was much less likely.

Once the two of them would reach a branching section on the outside parament of the inner arena ring, this would be where they parted ways for a time. Nana would eventually be called up to face a foe and she knew that her senpai would be watching from any angle to judge her. She realized she hadn't responded to his statement earlier. before the two would part ways, she would give him a reply. "Mages are often too complacent with the convenient of their magic. I'll use this as a weapon against them." she would say, leaving the rest to Erebus' own insight. Many mages who joined the arena fights loved to show off their magic to gather fans or patrons.

Erebus

“Do your best, I heard this kid you’re facing is a decent talent. Show her that she’s second to you, prospect.” Erebus said before they officially parted ways.

Erebus took to a spot in the stands, watching until his name was called to join the next battle. For now, he untucked his hood, revealing spikey pink hair, with buzzed sides. Two stud earrings gleamed in the shade, and his necklace was a platinum chain with a pendant matching their color and luster.

Meanwhile, Nana would get right to the ring and the foe she fought was across the lot by twenty meters, the character was a female like herself. Flexing her thighs and stretching her calf muscles so as to limber up. When the opponent finished, she stared Nana down. Waiting for the first shot, and loud bell to kick off their duel.

Cue the music:

The girl began, as her left hand unsheathes a sword, her right hand points forward to launch a casual bolt of lightning ahead. It would take two seconds for the magic seal to launch the spell, a yellow seal forming in front of her hand, and then another second before it reached 20m of travel. After that the foe, who we’ll call “Eres” ran forward, she could run 10m/s so the first second in which Nana was reacting to the bolt. Eres has the advantage of reaching her in only one second of time across the map, unless of course Nana rushes her too. The advantage Eres has is that her weapon is longer, so if Nana comes in close, she will find that Eres swipes from side to side twice, holding 1.3m of distance between them.

Nana

It seemed that no too long after Nana had entered the waiting area, that her name was called up to perform in the arena. A bit too soon or so Nana felt- she had wanted to watch a few fights and get a feel for what was typical in the arena. Of course it didn't matter very much to the green haired daemon girl- a fight was a fight whether you were ready for it or not.

Nana had theorized fighting mages in her head many times. She even witnessed some of her guild members practicing together and took strong points of the specific strengths and weaknesses or each fighter. While her own fighting experience was quite limited, she had plenty of knowledge to put into practice. She was fortunate that she was being provided an opportunity so soon. Erebus Senpai will be pleased, I think. she thought to herself, though being uncertain due to how enigmatic her sensei truly was. She didn't really have to understand him, just accept him or his good and bad: learn from him and maybe even surpass him one day.

She stowed that thought for the time being. She needed to focus one hundred percent on the current situation. As soon as she stepped through the archway and into the arena, a round of applause and cheers echoed into the round arena. Some cheered, some boo'd- maybe the other fighter was a favored contender?

No. One look told Nana all that she needed to know. Her opponent was a young girl around her own age. Pretty and seemingly delicate. No wonder there are so many cheers. she thought to herself, mentally comparing herself to the other contender. The other young woman could arguably be more pretty than Nana, in an innocent charming way. Nana held a more exotic and mature elegance to herself however, even sultry in regards to using meshnet clothing to allow parts of her body to be exposed. No doubt some of the cheer was for her, from those who understood her mature charm.

After the comparison, Nana inspected the young woman. She possessed a singular sword, somewhat longer than Nana's daggers. She did not have the muscular body of a practiced martial artists however. Nana speculated that it was highly likely that this contender could use magic and sword in tandem. A fearsome combination if paired properly. Nana decided then and there that she could not go easy on this young women.

She squared off at twenty meters apart in the center of the arena and placed her hands at her sides, ready to grasp her daggers at any second. Once the 'okay' bell had been rung to initiate the fight, Nana flipped her daggers from their scabbards just as the mage rose her right hand and began an incantation for magic. Nana lunged forward and to the right of her foe's direction, intending to barely evade whatever attack the mage might throw at her, while closing the distance for a close range melee.

With the intent to dodge the spell, Nana would come to a half halfway towards her foe and on the young woman's right side- just as the woman rushed her with her own sword now drawn. The purpose of rushing the mage's right side, was to give her as little room as possible to swing her weapon, or fire off another spell without impeding her right arm's swinging range.

Assuming her evasive lunge had been successful and the other contender had rushed Nana as well with her sword swinging: two of their weapons would clash. Nana's dagger against the mages' sword. To the mage's surprise however, she would find that Nana was much stronger than she looked- Simply clashing weapons was not enough, no. As their weapons clashed, Nana's strength would push through the other woman's momentum and push her sword arm wide to her side. This was an attempt to off-balance the woman while her second dagger: unfettered, would hone in on Nana's target, the woman's chest. If successful, Nana's dagger would bury itself to the hilt into the woman's chest, piercing her heart. Nana would give it a wicked twist to ensure maximum bleed would render the heart null and cause the young woman instantaneous death.

With the deed assumably accomplished, Nana would withdraw her bloody dagger from the corpse and wipe it against the dead woman's pink dress. Not so pretty now. she thought to herself, looking down and grinning so few if any could see the wicked demonic smile at covered her face momentarily before regaining her composure. She wouldn't bother waiting for an proclamation from the announcer. It was clearly her win and she intended to exit the stage before she caused any more impressions on the crowd. Half of anyone's fame or infamy was a sense of unknown or mystery. Humans were fickle and twisted: they loved to embellish stories, even half truths.

Erebus

Eres seemed surprised to see the rogue evade the bolt of yellow thunder magic. She planted her feet and took both hands upon her hilt as she swung wide for Nana... the crowd stood on it’s feet. No one was ready for this upset however, as the local Baska prodigy was about to meet her maker.

Erebus watched as the blonde girl in her dress clashed against Nana’s dagger. It shocked her, and you could see the hope wash off her face as Nana casually pushed it towards the stone arena flooring. The Dagger Master smirked, “Big mistake, tsk.” the rogue muttered, after all. Daggers were designed for counters, parries, and piercing the vitals. So when in that one swift moment Nana put grit behind her metal; everything else fell apart for Eres. She thrusted with little difficulty against the sword, and forced the other dagger straight through the girl’s collarbone. It was over, Erebus stood up just before the dagger was pulled out bloody red. Making his way to the waiting room, he clapped on his way out of the stands. The sole guest who seemed to cheer Nana on for her dark act, that was okay.

Many couldn’t accept the sight of a future monster. Erebus could appreciate skill, and Nana showed potential.

When Erebus was called out to the arena, he simply eclipsed the ground in a black fog and zoomed upon his target. When the smoke dissipated, the corpse was beheaded. A giant of a man, nine feet tall— completely reduced to rubbish.

That was all she wrote.
