Erebus was clad in a shiny helmet, though his cloak was long gone. Lost to another, at the least it’s power was in the hands of another nightmare. Erebus has his doubt about the person in particular, as he always distrusted others even if just a bit. Now though, he was tasked with Oak work once more. A quest he’s been on countless times, even along once with the old Kingsguard Shichiro, and a few other high profile entities such as Konstantin.
Today it was Achlys— a new face in the guild hall that Erebus hasn’t seen much. However, she favored herself as a pretty tough witch before she even entered. Not unlike Erebus, who was already a powerful rogue before he became a summoner.
Summoning… He still hadn’t worked the kinks to that out yet, but imagined he’d get it together sooner or later. His physical skills still fared exceptionally well without magic. So he would be entering the lion’s den with melee alone; Achlyss as his range he figured.
He walked down the Oak streets, leaving behind him rural homes before the end of a dirt road came before the old Church. Erebus would wait here for his comrade. Inhaling a swig of black smoke from his pipe that he held in his hand.
“Achlys, don’t you have that job today with Erebus? Why aren’t you ready yet? It’s almost time.” ”OH RIGHT!” Lilith’s voice is the first thing Achlys heard in the morning today and that words from Lilith make her realize that she’s almost left for the job to meet up with Erebus. Achlys gets ready as fast as she can, no time for a long warm bath like how she usually does and when she’s done, she quickly gets going to meet Erebus. ”Come on Ban, we need to go!” Achlys shouts at Ban, her companion as she runs out of her room.
Finally, today is the day where Achlys takes her first quest together with some others. She never had experience in team work before, always working alone gives her the privilege to make sure her job is done really well. But as she’s now part of a guild and she met some other members, she feels like she might need to try working with someone. Plus this job is the one she took not so long ago, and the place for this job is where she meets her Demon, Lilith. So she might have a little bit of a nostalgic feeling doing this job today.
She feels excited to finally work as a team so she runs as fast as she can. When she arrives at the church, she can see that Erebus is already there waiting for him but she can’t say a word because she has to catch her breath.
Erebus smokes his pipe in eerie silence, noting the sound of the crickets chirp and the gaze of the pale moonlight. When the racket of jangling items finally comes breaks the silence Erebus steers himself to rear view— the tall masculine criminal was staring down at Achlyss, a petite witch that he would now be officially meeting for the first time.
“Breathe. You’re in no rush.” Erebus pointes out sharply, smiling to reveal sharp canines. He then scoops the long pipe from his lips and offers it her way, pointing behind him with his thumb, he motions for the quest area. “Ghost Hunting.” He spoke simply. “They aren’t going anywhere. Makes the job easy,” Erebus turned around to lift the gate’s latch, and he would make his way towards a large door. Taking one foot, Erebus heaved a leg forward that dismantled the door from the hinge, his eyes peeled into the building, and he performed a bit of recon on the room, walking around to investigate whilst motioning Achlyss to follow his lead. They were under ground yet, but there was nothing preventing them from that later.
Erebus wouldn’t find much in the grand room or prayer, but he made sure he carefully grazed his fingers over gold ceramic bowls, dropping them into a satchel at his side. If Achlyss hadn’t taken a mind to looting this place yet, he’d encourage her. “You don’t have to follow my example, but I know how to make the real money on these quests and it’s not by following the rules.” He insisted through smoke and a slowed tone. His voice was older, wearier, but also wise with a deceptive energy to it. As if, when talking, you couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming dark influence behind such a Outlaw.
Following Erebus and getting into the church, Achlys notices that this place hasn’t changed since the last time she went here. That was the time where she met Lilith and made the deal with her, turning Achlys to a Daemon. Erebus said that this is an easy job since the ghosts that we have to destroy aren’t going anywhere and Achlys agrees to that but she never thought that she will have to come back here doing the same thing again. During their time in the grand room, Erebus encourages her to take a look and loot the place just like what he did. Well he did say that Achlys doesn’t have to follow his example, but his tone feels like he’s trying to convince her to do so. But on the other side, Ban is already collecting some stuff and when Achlys give him the look he only said ”Calm down, I can share my profit with you.” and Achlys can only try to understand his behavior.
”This place is never boring, Everytime I get here, there will always be some wonder souls and some spirits in here and it seems like they never stop coming back here. Make me curious about what this church actually do to the point where this place attract so many spirits.” Said Lilith to Achlys in her mind. But when Achlys is about to answer her, an overwhelming dark influence comes from behind and can’t be ignored by Achlys. ”Tell me you feel that too.”
Erebus could sense through the quiet dark— a looming enigma; the air was unnatural and foggy when it left the lips. He slowly turned, a brow squinting up through the black over Achlyss head. Though Erebus couldn’t make it out this spirit of sorts seemed to hold a hand out toward Achlyss, and Erebus found his legs unable to move. Seeming under the control of Magic— Erebus pierces the silence. “Move fast!”
If Achlyss didn’t respond, a black shade claw would retract fingered claws and scratch her neck out, the color of the darkness would show a deeper silhouette of a 9 foot tall apparition. It was a being without identity for now; perhaps a daemon, maybe even a weapon of a Bishop. But right now it was attempting S-rank physical damage against Achlyss and Erebus was unable to move on it’s entry, invisible magic seals, binds.. this was a tough predator, Achlyss would really need to test herself against this foe.
“Eat!” it rasped. “Feed!” It protested, and if given a second to spare; the apparition would lunge after Achlyss again. It’s slender body was well-equipped for having the speed to keep up with fast magical tactics. This was more than just a gimmick fight, it was a s-rank threat tailored for an adventure.
Achlys didn’t know what’s going on when she suddenly heard Erebus shout at her, telling her to move fast. With a fast reflex she grabs Ban with her left hand and snaps her right finger causing a magic seal to appear under her and she slides in a smoke form towards Erebus and gets behind him. Upon her arrival, she gets the chance to turn her head toward the direction she came from and she can see a black shade claw was trying to reach her in her previous position. ”WOW! What was that?!” Achlys shouts a little bit because she is shocked at what she saw. That unknown being suddenly shouted “Eat!” “Feed!” make the situation become more tense.
During the confusion that Achlys have, she asks Lilith about that unidentified being, but she accidentally speaks it out loud instead of keeping it in her head. This kind of action might make Erebus feel a little bit confused, but Achlys doesn’t even get the chance to think about this that far. ”Lilith, what the hell was that?! You know that thing? It wasn’t here the last time we met here. What’s going on?” If Erebus hears it and feels confused about who Achlys is talking to, she promises to give him an explanation later after they finish this job.
Erebus freezes upon hearing the girl, but more keenly picks up on the name Lilith before anything else. The female lust demon that mounts men, Erebus knew of this because his intelligence modifier, he’d amassed large and lengthy amounts of information on monsters specifically. Whatever Lilith was to Achlys, was probably what sent her to Eternal Nightmare to begin with. He suddenly had to throw up his dagger, as a shadowy tendril formed in front of him attempts to bash at his chest.
Upon blocking, a blue light shimmered, deflecting the physical damage but also landing some hefty damage to his weapon. Erebus was still a novice summoner— he couldn’t just depend on help from his magic like others, he had to think quick. Bouncing off his back foot Erebus through all his might into a neck on the half invisible foreign body, causing a hiss noise to reverberate across the room. The sound of multiple legs on the ceiling made Erebus hop backwards and stare at the darkness over them.
“What ever comes or happens, keep yourself alert. I know the demon that is trying us right now.”
He gulped. “Pray he doesn’t steal your face.” Erebus began to fiddle his pocket for his relic, hoping to cast a spell that might allow them to catch the hard to spot intruder.

The clash between Erebus’s dagger and the shadowy tendril shocked her a little bit and put her in alert with the current situation. With this situation, it’s a bad thing for them if this fight stays too long, they really need to finish this as soon as possible. The thing that troubles her is that Ban is not really fit to fight, which means she has to fight that monster while trying to protect Ban, including all the stuff he took earlier. ”We’re not alone here.” Said Lilith when they all hear a running sound from the ceiling and suddenly Erebus hop back and tell Achlys to stay alert.
That is exactly what they can do for now, there’s nothing good in rushing a decision and better reading the situation. ”Get ready to grant me your power, I might need it depending on the situation.” Achlys talking to Lilith, since Erebus doesn’t look confused when she talked to Lilith earlier, she feels a bit comfortable to do it more. In her head, Achlys is thinking about so many possibilities and strategies they can use to fight, but because she doesn’t really know Erebus style and ability to fight, she only thinks about how she can take roles on each of those possibilities.
”I can use my defensive spell and take damage from the enemies, taking the role of a tanker, or I can support with range magic way back giving him more space to fight thanks to my abnormal spell range. Depending on how he wants to fight, I can fit my fighting style with that.” Think Achlys to herself, and she feels like she wants to quickly make the plan but she knows that she has to remain calm and think clearly, so she just keeps waiting for now.
Erebus strengthens his grip around his dagger, and moves with a supernatural speed to the middle of the church, with the moon kissing the center from clear glass. He uses the site of the area to allow him to see any distortion of the air. Whilst keeping a defensive posture upright.
The monster could be heard growling and lunging, as if moving up wall. Only before it was in the light or traceable, the monster would send a tendril like appendage in the direction of Achlyss, to scoop her within, and squeeze her for S-rank damage.
Erebus eyes the shapes on the walls, studying the shadows was the trick to seeing this invisible aberration. — It was only near invisible. Erebus wove a hand, and his hand filled with a blue light, oceanic and turquoise but under the LED magic seals behind his elbows.
Traveling up his forearm, bubbles covered his arms like gauntlets, sure to spring binds on anything that came near. He was waiting for the optimal moment to destroy the enemy. Achlyss has her interval as well. Perhaps it was that, Erebus felt no worry or hurry. His face curled in a maniacal smile. Both legs bent and the iron brimstone and blood came out.
If the monster wasn’t stopped, it would attempt another attack again.
The situation swiftly went from a steady tense to a fight mode. As Erebus makes his move to the center area of the church to take the benefits of the moon light going to the clear glass around that area, Achlys opens wide her hands triggering her spell, Demon Assimilation combined with the devil Chordeva from her relic. Chordeva then turns into a black smoke and starts covering Achlys’s whole body and turning into an armor shape like a kimono with some modification. That armor will defend her whole body from 2-S rank damage in total. Achlys makes this decision because their enemy is almost invisible and with the current light situation, it’s really hard to see it unless in some specific location.
Since Erebus moves to the light, the possibilities for him to be attacked by the monster is getting smaller since it’s logical for the monster to avoid being seen under the light.
Her thinking is proven right when suddenly the monster throws a tendril-like appendage in the direction of Achlyss, catches her within, and squeezes her dealing an S-rank damage. Thanks to her decision to cast a defensive spell, her body is protected from the damage and only her spell takes the damage. But Achlys put a smirk on her face ”Gotcha”. She points her palms to the direction where that tendril-like comes from and shoots out purple shadow from her hand attacking the monster dealing it with an S-rank damage. The light from her magic seal covers some area and shows a bit of that monster. This gives Erebus a chance to attack that monster as well, if he can take that change, the damage will cause the monster to release Achlys from its tendril.
Erebus watches Achlyss engage her combinations. Meanwhile, his arm is coursing through blue water, with a spell charged and ready to bind the beast with itself.
The purple light, revealed the shape of a giant chameleon with spare tentacles jutting off his back. Some kind of evil sevenese spirit curse, some item must have been responsible. Oh well— with the monster revealed to the now, Erebus quickly chased his forward and gashed the distorting form, hopefully with enough force to have Achlyss freed, before bringing down his elbow to swallow the invisible monster in a bind.
Once under the bind, Erebus could walk inside and stab it to death. It’s evil gone forever in the wake of a dark mahe. Perhaps that was a hard fight, but there was much left to do in the night as well. Erebus figures he might as well mention that— abruptly breaking the silent violence on his side to chat with the mage. “We still haven’t even been underground, let’s wrap this up. We’re Nightmares are we not?!” He says, boosting the girl’s morale, whilst he simultaneously steps into the bind Bubble and vanquished the monster by repeatedly stabbing it under the bind.
Stepping out of the bubble Erebus was drenched in water. His scraggly beard dripping water from his chin and his weary eyes seemed to show tire. Yet this was the job, and there was much to do. He approached the table on the front stage and pushed the concrete block until the entrance to the catacombs below was in sight.
“Ave Satanis— It’s etched over the box.” He chuckled. “Only a fool puts faith in devils. Hail Satan. Please.” He rolled his eyes, clearly Erebus had something against devils. Quite ironically it seemed, that he was one. But in reality he didn’t like any God and he didn’t like any devil. Cursed stones lined the edge walkways; Erebus was positive there was black magic amidst here. Something horrible must have happened, as the deeper they got the more he realized the lights were pre-lit, too far underground and the chances they’d be able to just go back up were growing slimmer & slimmer.
Luckly, Erebus saw the exact opportunity to launch his attack and took it. His binding attack forces that monster to release Achlys. That was a pretty good fight, at least to test how these two people will work as a team and it turns out pretty well. Erebus reminds Achlys that their business is not even done here, they’re not even on the underground and yet they get in a pretty harsh fight. When Erebus takes the final blow towards the monster, she tries to talk to Lilith and figure out what’s going on here. ”That was a pretty dangerous threat, what’s going on, I don’t remember this place being this dangerous. Do you have an explanation about this?” Seems like Erebus didn’t here that she talks because he’s taking care of that monster, but if he happened to hear and talk to Achlys, she would answer after hearing what Lilith got to say to her.
”I finally understand what’s the problem here. I was the one that had the biggest power here and controlled those monsters and spirits. Since I left this place and those things here, this place has become chaotic and they try to take the leader's place and chaos will always attract more evil spirits that’s why there are more strong spirits here now.”
Her theory is makse sense and might be right, but that means more monsters and spirits might be strolling underground. Achlys sees Erebus open the way down stairs and follows him while telling Ban to stay, loot some stuff and just leave this place for his own safety.
Erebus steers himself forward, he vocalizes an epiphany at her question. “Poltergeists don’t need a reason to attack forsaken men.” he reasoned undoubtedly. With every step that plunged them ever further down the hole into the catacombs, you could hear hollow whispers dance off the walls. The backdrop for the steep slope was ashy and rocklike. Erebus jumped from a cliff side to a platform down below, as the ceiling became more and more cavernous and underground. A huge chamber befell the duo, and Erebus climbed inside, falling first through a hole that seemed out of place. The weirder and more impossible it seemed, the more mysterious these caves became. Until ultimately, you’d find a good kill. Call it a day, and return for payment..
Inside the deep chamber, rocky earthen obstructions and deep foggy coverings made the landmass a bit of a maze. When Erebus finally came to the ground, the floor cratered under his might. He noted the sheer damage, and absorbed the blow to his knees that had them bleeding for the moment.
He patted his clothing of any dust and looked back to Achlyss, excitement producing is it no? He seemed to beg the question with his eyes. “Having fun yet? Something about risk and reward, always make this so addicting to me.” He finally admitted, almost psychotically. He wondered how Achlyss would react to his choice of words regarding adventure.
This is getting weirder and weirder, the more they go deeper the path, the weirder it becomes. It also kinda gets creepier as they go deeper. How deep will they have to go? What’s waiting for them in the deeper area? When will they finally fight again? Those questions keep popping up in Achlys' head. This feels like a never ending path, are there any goals towards this direction? Achlys keeps questioning everything in her head, but she just keeps following Erebus and stays alert all the time.
”Should we just go crazy and destroy this whole place including all the monsters here? That might be fun to see and make this job done quickly.”
Well it’s not that hard for Achlys to kinda use her spell to destroy this whole place, but it might destroy the church as well, and at least Erebus needs to get out from the radius of her spell before she casts it. That is a crazy idea, too crazy to be done.
As they keep going, Erebus at one point asks Achlys about this adventure so far. But she can’t really answer it, it is fun for her and for Lilith if they end up having an epic fight. But so many uncertain things are going on during this job and the fact that this is the first time Achlys and Erebus work together, they still have to sort out some stuff about their fighting strategies or they might put each other in danger. All she can say to him is ”Let’s wrap it up soon, the reward might be the most exciting part right now.”
That much Erebus could agree with, he was really purely out to make the money today so with Achlyss on the same page, he could tell she was steadfast and courageous. The sound of a marching behemoth, made Erebus stop in his tracks, extending his blade out carefully.
Just then, trees were knocked down. A large Oni demon came into their sights from beyond a cliff wall, at least sixteen meters in height. Erebus decidedly answered Achlyss after that same moment. He beckoned his attention to the monster, at what he could only assume was a demonic spirit residing in this deep underworld nest. The Church was merely the portal to the next world, a dark world. Erebus reasoned in his psyche.
He channeled his pride, “If you can blow that thing up. Be my guest, I’m more of a Trapper myself.” He admitted with diligence. Although Achlyss was new and quite young, she was a much more expertised magi than the villian-vigilante. Erebus prided his melee and worshiped the blade, Achlyss was a magician scholar and it quite obviously showed when she armored up earlier. Now was her chance to impress a Founder; Erebus kept his wit about him to watch for now.
The Oni finally noticed their voices. Perking up and sneezing— a lumbering oof. Erebus could think before it’s mind to charge them took over. Lunging far to the right, Erebus would watch the giant reach the point Achlyss stood in a blitz.
Erebus hopped with superhuman delegancy, landing a few meters up on some rocks. He aimed his hand forward and his elbow back, charging a seal that placed a ball of water within his grasp. He awaited his partner, not letting the bomb go until a clear shot was assured.
The marching of the behemoth stopped Erebus in his tracks and he took his sword out, alerting Achlys at the same time. They were right to be alert and ready because just after that a large Oni came from beyond a cliff wall, it’s around 16 meters. This place is really something else now, think Achlys to herself. Suddenly Erebus tells her that he allowed her to take that thing down if she can do it, and that suddenly puts excitement on her and of course Lilith. ”FINALLY!!! LET'S GET CRAZY!” Lilith screams out in Achlys head out of excitement. After Erebus tells her to blow that thing down, the Oni notice their presence, Erebus lunging far to their right and watch. He then jumped and landed on some rock and got ready to launch his attack.
Since Erebus gives her permission to go crazy, Achlys assumes that he will be fine if he takes some damage from her spell, since she can take some as well, thank you to the defend spell she used earlier. “Let’s do this Lilith” She talked to Lilith and right when the Oni starts to move closer towards Achlys, she snaps her finger and triggers a 4 meters magic seal under her, followed by a 32 meters magic seal with the center of it 15 meter away from Achlys, closer to the Oni right on its path. ”Mana Zone : Jigoku no Ikari” and from that seal shoot upwards countless dark purple shadows in that whole 32 meters area for 32 meters tall as well. Dealing 2 S-rank damage not only to the Oni, but also to herself and Erebus and also making a big hole straight through the church’s floor and shaking the ceiling causing some parts to fall down to the ground. Her armor breaks in an instant giving her back her outfit and that Oni has no chance of surviving her attack at all.
Achlys quickly looks at Erebus's direction trying to confirm his condition since she doesn’t really know his limit and only assumes that he will be fine. ”You good?”
The spell Achlyss chose interrupted Erebus, lighting the chamber up in a magnitude of an explosion. The force blew twoS-rank at him, he raised his arms to cover his head. Since his endurance was supernaturally high he managed to hold himself together and not fall to a knee, as the ground cracked around his person. The energy caused scratches and bruises on his body, tearing his clothes loose on his body. He breathed heavily, aching from the burn. But he managed to survive.
“Not what I meant!” He retorted with a tense face. He then smirked, “I can’t piss you off with spells like that can I? Pretty impressive.” He gave her a thumbs up. Though he did have to admit it seemed too easy. To think the monster was done, he fastened his attention to the monster and turned on his feet.
It’s right arm was bent around and it was fried from magical power. Achlyss was a monstress mage. Erebus noted this thought, he walks up to the spirit and begins incanting abyssian languages and the giant behemoth Oni fades to dust. Erebus rubs his lower back, he was getting too old for this shit.
“Time to head back, that feels like S-rank quality to me.” Erebus sighs an exhale awaiting anything Achlyss would like to add before they officially close out and turn this quest in. Erebus would no doubtedly be collecting a bounty for stealing, but he didn’t care. It was worth the prize.
”Well, you gave me permission so I did it.” Says Achlys with a straight face responding to Erebus thumbs up gesture. ”You better not piss anyone off, at least until you know if they’re weaker than you. Just like how I don’t want to piss you since I know you still have some power hidden under your sleeve.” Said Achlys while giving Erebus some kind of suspicious expression on her face.
With this, their quest finally completes and Achlys’s first team up quest goes better than she expected. She feels like it’s pretty fun to quest with someone but maybe she needs to at least have a training session together before really taking the job. She follows Erebus' order to head back and meet with Ban who has collected a bunch of items for her. She doesn’t bother to ask Erebus about how he feels when Achlys seems like talking to herself. But this is a good experience for her, plus getting to know someone from her guild is something that she needs to do more often. She waits for Erebus to be done with his business and listens to anything he has to say to Achlys if there’s any before she heads back to the guild hall.

Erebus nods, he couldn’t argue with her statements. Everything she said she could do, she did it. Not that Erebus really put his all in today anyways, he was trying to gauge the leadership skills other members had alone, and while she had power. Erebus knew Achlyss was someone who needed guidance.
Little did he know, Lilith, was the guide and Erebus would need to investigate her more to ever come to that conclusion. For now he was happy to have a competent partner, get paid, and get his work out in. But what he really craved the most, was some rest. Erebus turned in the mission, before returning to the guild hall in tattered clothes.
He couldn’t help, but remember what it was like to be on his own. Erebus quite enjoyed the help of others, though… Trust was always an issue, he hoped forging trust in these immortals and sinisters would at least keep strong forces in his corner. Erebus needed to keep it in his mind to quest with Achlyss again soon someday.
His hand found itself around a doorknob as he leaned into it tiredly, Erebus was on his floor. He noticed his bed in the chamber corner and fell into it. Exhausted after tanking that mighty spell.
