Everything was wrong in Talaz Lagaar, in so many ways. No matter what anyone did, no matter how many specialists were brought into the Mechanical City, progress towards a cure to this plague seemed to be moving at a snail's pace. The longer people stayed in Talaz Lagaar, the more they suffered. Even outsiders such as herself who had travelled to Talaz Lagaar to help could feel the impact on their bodies. Atani could feel it in her blood. The way the mana didn't flow just right, how it took slightly more effort to cast spells. But there were those who were sicker. Much sicker. And without a cure, there was only so much they could do for everyone. There was only so much she could do. There was an assortment of magic spells, experimental drugs, herbal remedies... but it was not a one size fits all type of deal.

Sometimes she got lucky and was able to treat someone right away. Other times, it would take much longer. But... she was getting better at it each and every time she showed up at one of Talaz Lagaar's medical clinics to help. The only thing was, her magic was still on the fritz. There was something wrong. There had been something wrong, even before she arrived at Talaz Lagaar.

Issues with her magic weren't out of the ordinary. It seemed that with her family's blood curse, it was only inevitable her magic would fluctuate in its behavior, even evolving at points. She used to only be able to heal, but now... She could do more. She remembered being terrified when her magic harmed someone for the first time in her life, but now she could control that. She could use the elements of light, nature, and water to varying degrees...

Even wind at one point. Months ago, she had finally gotten back to where she was... To where she was during the incursions. She'd even gotten stronger. But then, it all went away. Again.

"Mórinna, Ëala, whoever you are..." she spoke in her mind. "Please... Just work with me today."

The damned spirit remained silent. She used to be so vocal years ago, but now it seemed she liked to wreak havoc on her body in silence. Atani sighed as she slipped on her shoes and headed out the door.

She'd been staying at an inn not too far from the usual clinic she volunteered at. It wasn't all that, but the rent was cheap, and it sufficed her needs while staying in a foreign nation. And cheap was good, because volunteering her time didn't exactly pay the bills. But, out of gratitude, she sometimes had her room paid for, so at least there was that.

As she made her way towards the clinic, Atani kept a mental note of all the things she had to take care of while she was out, because her day never ended at the conclusion of her shift. No, she always had loads more to do, especially in a place as new and unfamiliar as Talaz Lagaar. Her itinerary always consisted of some combination of reading, studying, meditating... herbalism, experimentation, theurgy... The Mechanical City just had so many unique things one simply could not find in Fiore. And for Atani in particular, whose entire being-- hell, her entire species-- was dedicated to nature. Which was, of course, decidedly not part of what made Talaz Lagaar so unique. And that's not even considering the big medical mystery surrounding the metropolis.

Atani stepped into the clinic and gave a small wave towards one of the nurses who gave her a smile and a nod.

The nurses, doctors, and other medical staff-- they all knew Atani by now. Likewise, she knew all the other regular volunteers. She'd even come to know some of the frequent flyer patients, some of which were genuinely accident prone or uniquely susceptible to the plague, and others of which were hypochondriacs. Atani had her fair share of treating all of the above, but by and large, she saw many new faces every day working-- volunteering-- there.

Walking past the rows and rows of patients, Atani stepped into the back to change into some much simpler clothes she didn't mind getting bloodied: a pair of scrubs, courtesy of the clinic. After pulling back her hair and washing her hands clean, she was set to start her shift. As always, she consulted the patient chart to see who still needed attending, who was most urgent, and who had been waiting the longest.

The first patient was a young girl who was showing some of the more severe signs of being afflicted by the plague. This was not too uncommon, particularly in pediatrics, but it didn't take long for Atani to figure out why she was so susceptible. Like some other patients she'd seen, this one had a very strong connection to magic and was likely more sensitive to disruptions in her mana, especially since she was far too young to know how to control it. Luckily, as Atani was familiar with these cases, it didn't take long to whip up something to help keep the symptoms at bay until a real cure was developed.

Like the little girl, there were several more patients that day who were sick from the plague. Some were easily treatable like her, and others less so. She hardly got anyone from Talaz Lagaar who wasn't impacted by the plague.

That is, of course, until one certain man showed up. He wasn't even her patient to begin with; he was one of another volunteer doctor's.

"Sir, please, I'm not going to ask you again."

"I'm telling you, I was there. That- That's how it works. It just takes and-- "

"I can't treat you if I don't know exactly what happened."

"But I told you what happened. The Fractured Sky-- "

The... Fractured Sky? Atani took off her old pair of sterile gloves and walked over to a patient who seemed to be giving one of the doctors some trouble. She could see his arm hung limp by his side. A small bump in his leg from a quick glance indicated some sort of fracture.

"Excuse me for a moment," Atani said, tapping the doctor on the shoulder. "Can I grab you real quick?"

She quietly took the doctor to the side.

"Hey, what's up? It seemed like this patient was giving you a hard time... ?" she asked gently and away from the bed, such that the man couldn't hear.

"Yes, well..." the doctor began to respond in a thick Minstrese accent. She briefly explained to Atani how this man claimed to have visited the Fractured Sky, and how the Sky supposedly 'took away' the use of his dominant arm. The Minstrese woman didn't know whether to believe the rumors of the Fractured Sky or not, but if his story was true, she didn't think it would explain his broken leg, which made her doubt his tale in its entirety. Atani nodded along as she heard the explanation, recognizing that the clinic had been getting a few... fanatics as of lately. Some of them were borderline insane from her understanding... but maybe that was all a trick of this Fractured Sky. Who could say?

"Why don't you let me handle him," Atani suggested. "I think there's another patient at Bed 2 who's more your specialty anyway."

The Minstrese doctor gave Atani an appreciative smile and headed off to see the other patient. Atani then turned to the patient she had just stolen from the doctor and swung a stool over.

"Hello, sorry about that. I'll be taking care of you now... Now, what exactly did you say happened?" Atani asked as she began to examine the patient. She started with the leg, as that was the most obvious injury.

"As I was telling the other lady, I went to the Fractured Sky and-- ow!" the man yelled as she gently touched the spot she suspected the break to be.

"Sorry," Atani apologized, "but... it's definitely broken. I'll have to set it, but yes, right. She explained to me about your... trip to it?"

She didn't know if that was the proper term, to call it a 'trip.' It almost made it sound like a tourist attraction that way.

She had the man lie down as she prepared to set his fracture. She snapped her fingers, and a thin stream of water encircled his leg to help mitigate the pain as she did so. Keeping him talking about the Fractured Sky served as a good distraction for the man as well. In no time at all, she was already onto splinting and bandaging his leg, and the man looked to be much more comfortable than he was when he first came in.

"So... I hear the story about your arm, but you never actually said anything about the Sky and your leg."

She looked at him skeptically.

"Oh... that." The man scratched the back of his neck with his one functioning arm. "I... wasn't supposed to be there. I fell trying to escape."

"You fell?"

Usually people didn't get that bad of a break from simply falling.

"It was a bad fall."

Alright... a bad fall. Whatever he said. Atani didn't believe it for a second, but it didn't really matter what the true cause of his injury was since it was easily treatable. But his arm, however... That was a different story.

Atani moved her exam to his arm. It truly was as if he didn't have any use of it at all. It failed every reflex test she tried. He couldn't feel anything. Light touch, squeezes, pinches, nothing. Not even pricks for blood draws. With no visible damage she could see and none she could sense with her magic, she was at a loss for identifying any other cause except for what he claimed: The Fractured Sky.

"You swear, up and down, that this was 100%, without a doubt, due to the Fractured Sky?" Atani asked as she put his arm in a sling... Not because it was injured, but to at least help keep it in place.

"Yes," the man insisted. "For the hundredth time, I swear."

Atani sat back on her stool and crossed her arms. She bit the edge of her lip as she tried to wrack her brain for something, anything that could be done to help the man, but in all her years of being a healer, studying under some of the greatest minds she knew, she couldn't come up with anything.

"Sir, I don't think..." she began, but she could already see the horror growing on his face.

"There has to be something you can do."

"The Fractured Sky... it's just too new. Not even everyone believes in it. And medically, I can find nothing wrong. It's as if the connection between your brain and your arm just... vanished."

It was honestly the most perplexing thing she had come across. And despite what the others were telling her, about how this man must be crazy, she was almost inclined to believe him.

"So... there's nothing you can do?" He stared at her in utter dejection, as if he couldn't believe the rumored permanent consequences of the Sky could be, well... permanent. Did he do this on purpose? Thinking he could sacrifice something physical to gain power and then simply have it be healed? She wanted to ask him if it was worth it, but judging by the look on his face, she assumed it wasn't.

"To be completely honest, no. There's nothing I can do at the moment. I don't know what this will look like a week, a month, or even years down the road, but according to your own words, you fear it might be permanent. I share that same concern too."

She paused to let that sink in. In her professional opinion, he would have to get used to life with a new dominant hand. She knew that wasn't the news he was hoping for, but that was his reality.
