Chess matches? Yeah, he doesn’t know how to play chess. He just knows the basic rules, sure, but he doesn’t really know the big strategies. He had watched his old slaver play chess with other people just like him while they talked about doing the most awful of things and, since he wasn’t allowed to go anywhere on his own or rest, he had to watch. Not fun, but it did teach him the basics. And knowing just the basics, a cocky Bucket thought that beating a child would be absolutely easy, a fucking cakewalk, synonims for not difficult.

Once he got there, the giant man chose to sit on the ground instead since he was too tall for the chair, instead crossing his legs and looking at the board. Of course, the kid seemed a bit creeped out by the guy who talked with a bucket head, though since Bucket was already a bit of a figure in town as a weird but useful and hard-working hobo, the boy at least knew who he was, so they got to playing. Though Bucket was a total newbie, his mind worked really quickly, trying to see a few moves ahead, though not knowing which move would actually be the most likely. He still wouldn’t get anywhere near winning with this, but at least he’d not lose immediately.

The kid started to talk. Bucket welcomed it, since it was a bit better than just ranting to himself. The kid talked about the pressure he felt at home to always perform because of the fame he had accrued as a chess genius, his need (and possible inferiority complex) towards his accomplished brothers and the general issues that a kid like him would face. It was a whole new perspective of problems and childhood for the older man who had only known suffering.

Though, in a way, he.. actually knew how it felt to be restricted in life. In various different ways, but he actually understood. So, he wouldn’t mock the kid, instead, he’d talk.

“Listen, young man. A family that pressures you in this way may be misguided, but they have only your future in mind. They see your value and your talents, so they want you to develop them. But remember: the final call is always yours, you are your own person.” The giant gave his own insight into it, though he didn’t know much about what a truly good family was like. His family was shit and he had never gotten into a relationship himself, so he didn’t even know what it was like to make a family. But he had made a few friends here. That marine biologist, that bodybuilder bro, the guy who owns the inn, the guy who owns the restaurant he eats at. He had friends now and he understood and they were like.

When it came to the brothers, he had less to say, other than telling the kid that while competing with others can be a fun, healthy way of improving oneself, he also shouldn’t fall into the inferiority trap, where he no longer even sees his own value as a person.

In the end, the kid looked a lot more chipper and, even though he had stomped Bucket, paid him handsomely and admitted he was simply lonely. The big man showed his jagged grin, pat the boy’s head and assured him that he’d go far and to never forget his love for the game. With the money, he’d leave, off to go eat his lunch.
