Back when Atani was still in Baska, there was one other line of events that occurred independently from the madness epidemic caused by the Cold Colliers. This other thing was far tamer in comparison, but it still came with its own level of danger.

Earlier, Atani had been doing some investigating for one of Baska's top designers: Fernando Milano. During her investigation, she had discovered that his rival, Jaune Chameur, was attempting to sabotage his fashion show in progressively dangerous ways. At first, there were a suspicious number of 'accidents' happening at Fernando's studio. They had all been close to harming Fernando's models or ruining his designs, but such travesties never came to pass. This all changed, however, when Atani witnessed an assassination attempt on a model she was sent to look after. The assassin failed to draw so much as a drop of blood thanks to her intervention, but he came close.

While Atani did manage to save the model from being harmed by the assassin, he had ultimately gotten away and likely went to inform Jaune that a mage was onto him.

In any case, the assassination attempt didn't stop Fernando from needing to travel to Hargeon for his work. It did, however, require him to hire a bodyguard for both himself and the model he was bringing with him. An attack on the road was highly likely, and the assassin could simply make it look like the work of a common bandit. Atani ended up being that bodyguard since she was the only mage familiar with Fernando's predicament.

She went with Fernando and his model while they gathered their belongings. The attempt was unlikely to take place before they left on their trip, but you could never be too safe. While they were packing, they informed Atani what the trip would be like.

They were to be traveling through the woods from Baska to Hargeon. Though there were plenty of open paths that merchants were known to take, they feared such roads would leave them far too exposed. Atani concurred. She herself often went through the woods in her journeys from one town to another. In part, it felt safer, but most of her reasoning of course was due to the fact that the forest was her home. It just felt natural to be there whenever she could.

In any case, the two were lucky they had none other than a Wood Elf guiding them through the thick of the trees. She could find the fastest route to Hargeon with ease while simultaneously keeping watch for any threats. It wasn't until an hour or two had passed (indicating that they were well away from Baska City) that something alerted Atani's sense of danger.

The unnatural silence of the forest was a dead giveaway. When animals sensed danger, they retreated. They knew not to make a sound. Atani would have told Fernando and his model to stop, but she feared that would only delay the assassin's inevitable attack. In the meantime, she paid even closer attention to her surroundings.

Her guise of ignorance had worked. While falsely assuming she was distracted, the assassin leapt from the shadows, knife in hand. With no hesitation, Atani whipped around and willed a flower to spiral around the assassin's body.

"Move any further, and I detonate the spell," she warned. She leached just enough magical energy into his body to let her know that this was no bluff and demanded he tell her who hired him. Lo and behold, it was none other than Jaune Chameur.

"Thanks," she said with a smile. She clenched her fist and the spell unleashed all its energy. It didn't kill the assassin, but it would keep him down for the count.
