After making her delivery to the latest client who had their goods stolen from their ship, Atani stopped to stretch. Her head tilted back and her eyes gazed at the moon shining high in the night sky, feeling its magical energy pour into her body. Strangely enough, even at so late of an hour and after having fought pirates, the elf was still far from tired. She had not had the opportunity to try out her new nature magic-- Or perhaps it wasn't even new. There was still the possibility it was the same nature magic she possessed while that dark spirit inhabited her body.

The original plan for the night was to go out and practice magic, learn some spells all while her companion Zimra was still fast asleep; however, she got sidetracked with some pirates along the way. They interrupted her plans that night for quite some time.

It delayed her progress for practicing her magic, the magic she didn't know she had, the magic that might've been there due to a spirit all this time...

No, that couldn't have been the case. The spirit was purged from her body via an ablution. It was gone. She had the scar to prove it. With her knowledge on spirits, she wasn't so careless as to let one possess her body again, even by accident. Such accidents like what happened with LeeAnn were things Atani knew to avoid. But even so... Atani looked at her hands. She could feel the energy coursing through her palms. She prayed to no one but the gods and goddesses in the elven pantheon. The Linea would never do something so evil as to harm anyone regardless of their blood. The same could not be said for the Vhaladar, but she would be damned if she ever even thought of praying to those deities.

Though she of course held them to the utmost respect-- they still were an important part of her religion-- if she prayed to them, she would be no better than a Dark Elf. She wouldn't want to become corrupted like them. And yet, ironically, she had chosen to train in the dead of night. The kind of darkness the notorious Wood Elven counterparts loved to tread. Honestly, she couldn't blame them. Though she spent the majority of her time basking in the sunlight, there was something almost ethereal about being awake under the stars. Despite her supposedly being a child of light-- whatever that was supposed to mean-- there was a certain rejuvenating aspect about the silver light of the moon shining down upon peaceful dark lands.

Atani took in a deep breath of warm spring air as she stood in the moonlight. The chirp of quiet grasshoppers and cicadas…

… They filled the air around her. Despite their appearance being hidden from humanity in these late hours, the mere sound of them proved that nature was just as active at night as it was in the day. The creatures of the night just did a better job at hiding their presence. Like her, they probably liked the solitude. Less of mankind to bother the animals. Even certain plants came to life in the dark, like moonflowers and Casablanca lilies. Perhaps it was actually a good idea Atani was able to discover her magic then.

Then being the dead of night. To discover her magic so late when the moon was high in the sky as opposed to the favorable sun, it gave her an opportunity to connect with nature in a way she rarely did before. Instead of waking up bright and early to observe the same flora and fauna during their most visibly active hours.

Maybe it was time she saw how the very beings she resonated closely with behaved while she, along with most others in both Hargeon and the rest of Fiore, slept away to get her rest like so many diurnal animals. Perhaps in this way she could obtain a certain mastery over her nature magic that she was not able to obtain before-- a certain mastery she wished Gaeriel would see.

Atani smirked as she walked through the forest around the outskirts of Astera. It was brimming with life. If she stopped to listen to it, she could feel the magic surrounding it. Even in the most mundane of creatures, there existed a certain aura around them. An aura that if a Wood Elf like her stopped to concentrate on would be all but tangible. Almost like a ghost. Or perhaps a spirit, rather. All living earthen things contained a spirit.

And Wood Elves were known for being close to them. A ghost was a dead spirit, but the things Atani felt, they thrived. They were full of vigor and energy. If it was true that even the smallest traces of magic were inside the living, they would be contained in the soul. To infuse that which existed in nature with her magic would be what would enable it to take off.

Atani continued to walk until she found a spot in the forest where she could feel the magical energy the strongest. Where the spiritual energy was the strongest. Once she arrived, it surprised her to see tiny flashes of deep blue light flicker away behind bushes. It was the sort of light that belonged to forest spirits if she was not mistaken. They were abundant in elven forests, but not so much in the rest of Fiore, she discovered.

It made sense for them to only appear when the rest of the world was asleep... Or should she say, when humans were asleep. The spirits soon saw that she was not a human, however. The tiny blue lights reemerged to show themselves to the Wood Elf. As they floated towards her, she could feel the air against her skin tingle with magic. It was like the sensation of a static fuzz that became more pronounced as the spirits drew closer. She held her arm out for one to land on the tip of her finger. When it landed, the mana-fueled static air dissipated around her, almost as if she had acted as a ground for the spirit.

She smiled softly as more came to join. It reminded her of the forest spirits from home. It was common practice for mages to go into the woods to train with them in isolation.

It was as if their mere presence influenced a Wood Elf's magic in such a way that casting spells just seem to come more... naturally. Even if it was a spell that the elf hadn't practiced before. Those kinds of novel spells were among the sorts that Atani was going to try that day. With the help of the spirits around her, she was hopeful that it would prove to be an easy task (particularly one that didn't take the whole night since she did need to return to the guild hall at some point).

There were a few different types of spells that she had in mind that would be of use to her. Among those were of course healing spells, for what kind of healer would she be if she only could cast a couple different kinds of those spells? Those, along with sensory and manoeuvrability nature spells.

Such spells were commonplace among mages of all sorts, but especially to Wood Elves who practiced magic. They were a race that possessed a high level of natural agility; magic spells augmented their physical attributes to a level that was even further above that. It provided them with just that much more of a competitive edge.

Those spells were ones that Atani found to be easier to learn than her famed healing spells. They were simplistic, only a step or two above the kinds of miscellaneous feats of magic she performed on the daily that could hardly be called spells themselves.

Atani looked at the tiny blue spirits around her. As she did so, she gathered up mana that became concentrated in her left hand. "Is it alright if I try something?" she asked the lights. They brightened their glow, which Atani was hoping meant yes. "Okay, I promise this won't hurt."

She was certain that the spirits could sense that she meant them no harm, but she could never be too careful. She didn't want them to be startled by her spell. From what she envisioned happening, the spell could certainly be perceived as something dangerous with no prior knowledge of its functionality. However, the Wood Elf had always been incapable of utilizing spells meant only to cause harm. Anyone who was familiar with her and her magic would know this.

Atani thrust her hand down, the one that she'd been channeling mana into. A green magic circle glowed beneath her feet, a clear indication that a nature spell was underway. Now all she had to do was hope that it was the same spell that she had pictured in her head, but given its simplicity, she was sure that it would turn out fine. Growing vines was nothing new to the elf.

From the forest floor beneath her feet, thick vines sprouted around the elf. They extended outwards generating a force in their wake that pushed the spirits around her away. The whole spell was rather sudden. While she had once been surrounded by a soft blue glow, the only thing left after the magic circle had faded was perpetual darkness.

Slowly, Atani returned to a neutral position and looked around. One by one, the wispy spirits appeared like fireflies. Each new light was so far away, they had to have been pushed at least 30 feet, though it was hard to tell in the dead of night.

They eventually returned to where she was. Atani took that as a good sign. It appeared that her training hadn't scared them off. If anything, based on their behavior and the intensity of their lights, she would say that it might have even been fun.

Maybe, Atani thought, it would do the spirits well to have some fun while I trained in the forest. She didn't imagine that they got many visitors at night, much less those who came with peaceful intentions such as hers. She wasn't sure if she was staying in Astera long after this night, so might as well make it count.

"Okay, I promise I won't do that again," the elf laughed as the wisps buzzed around her, generating that same static field from before. They brushed up against her skin, making her small hairs stand on end. Some playfully twirled strands of her golden hair. All the while she could feel some of their spiritual energy ebbing into her own body. It made her feel more... alive almost. She felt like she could do practically anything with her magic, but all she wanted to do was venture around the forest.

"Think you can keep up?" Atani smirked as the spirits buzzed and glowed in their playful form of a response. Again in her left hand, the mage willed magical energy to build and pool. Taking a running start, she let out a burst of mana from her hand which was aimed towards the ground behind her. A stream of leaves left a luminous magic circle that appeared at the tips of her fingers with an incredible force that managed to physically lift the elf into the air.

She felt butterflies in her stomach as she ascended followed by even more as she descended. Her spell didn't exactly guarantee a soft landing. The elf tucked her knees to her chest and rolled onto the forest floor to keep the momentum going and eliminate any possible damage. It was the kind of manoeuvre nearly all Wood Elves knew to do with their innate agility.

The first leap she made didn't propel her body to the same extent her other spell pushed the spirits. Granted, she was a heavier target than a near massless spirit, but still. She knew she could do better.

Atani glanced behind her. There were some stragglers behind. Others, however, managed to cling onto her hair and clothes to travel with her during the leaps. Time to test both her limits and theirs.

Her technique was good, but it could always be improved. Repeating the same process from before, Atani tried the spell again and again and again. Each time she cast it, she went further and further while fewer and fewer wisps managed to hang on. In the final bound, the elf managed to propel herself to the same distance as the first spell she mastered, a total of 10 metres. She looked around to find only two azure spirits remaining.

"So, what did you think?" she asked as the blue spirits drifted around. They did the same happy little dance they did before. All seemed well and good in the moment until a small sound caught the elf's attention. Her ears perked. She squinted into the darkness, but couldn't discern where this noise was coming from. "Do you hear that?" she whispered, but it wasn't as if the spirits could effectively communicate to her if they knew what the sound was or not.

"I'm going to try something." Once again, this was said in a hushed voice so as not to alert any unsuspecting person or creature around her. Atani closed her eyes and closed her fist. She extended her first two fingers up and brought them to her lips as if making a hush gesture. Behind her eyelids, she could tell that a green light was being produced from her attempt at a spell.

When she opened them, she knew that her spell had worked. It was a form of sensory spell. Though the primary uses of nature magic often involved masking one's scent using roots or flowers, Atani had no need for such a spell. Instead, her implementation of the magic involved releasing pollen spores to cling to someone, illuminating their presence even in the darkest of nights such as these.

She looked around. The pollen spores had brushed pass everything that was inanimate. Trees, bushes, vines, all of those hadn't a single trace of her spell attached to them. All the animals scurrying around in the night, however, did. As well as any other lurkers within the fifteen metre radius of her spell. Whatever she heard was most definitely within the vicinity her sensory spell outlined.

It wasn't difficult to discern which animals that were marked were innocent and which ones the kind she was looking for.

It didn't take long for the elf to pin down where the mysterious noise was coming from. In the inky darkness there laid a conglomerate of luminescent pollen spores letting off a much stronger glow than anything else in the forest. The closer Atani came, the better she could decipher its movement. There was a slight shuffling of the light, but not so little that it was reminiscent of a pack of sleeping animals. The movements were more ragged. Labored, even. Eventually, she was able to tell that the sounds were from animals in pain. Now that she had the ability to understand animal speech, it was also the first time she had heard such cries of anguish so vividly.

Though she prepared herself for what she would see, Atani didn't realize it would be to the extent it was. Five animals were on the ground before her in pools of blood.

At first glance, she thought they were all dead, but according to the ever so slight movements visible in the bio luminescence, she could tell that they were miraculously still breathing... but if she didn't act soon, they wouldn't be for much longer.

The healer wasted no time at all. By instinct-- for this was certainly no spell she had practiced before-- Atani dipped her hands down low and slowly brought them up, almost as if she was willing the forest floor itself to extend some of its life to the fallen animals upon it. What was brought forth were more bio luminescent particles. Like a magnet, each and every one found its way to the most critical wounds of the animals. She could see their gashes being filled with the spores. All the while, the stench of blood was becoming replaced with a calming scent of wildflowers, the kind that were native to the ones in Astera.

Atani let out a sigh as she saw some of the animals begin to stir. Though weak from the blood loss, some were able to manage to get to their feet. Two others though, they still struggled. Atani went to one. It was a deer whose leg appeared to be broken. Reaching out, she did the same as she did before and followed her natural instincts. She imagined some sort of bandage or splint to be wrapped around the deer's leg, but what came instead was a wild lily whose stem gently wrapped around the delicate limb. It ebbed its healing powers into the broken bones and mended it with ease. Once its use was up, it wilted into nothingness and the creature was healed.

The next suffered some trauma to its head, albeit more minor than the crushed bones she mended. She waved a hand beneath the creature's nose. The scent of ginger wafted into the air. The animal breathed it in and became cured of what she suspected to be a mild concussion.
