The wood elf’s body was still getting used to the foreign energy that now resided inside her. It still seemed so surreal, the whirling of magical energy that swirled and surged within her, so familiar, yet so alien. As she took a deep breath, she could easily pick up all the scents of things around her. The grass, trees and dirt smelt so much more fragrant, not to mention the adorable exceed sitting up in a tree nearby. His scent was something that she still hadn’t quite grown used to smelling at such a distance. Then there was the fact that her senses now felt overwhelmed a lot of the time. It was definitely taking some time getting used to, especially when it came to crowds.

Since regaining her mana, she’d been hesitant to use it, the fear that it was only temporary and might disappear again, forever eating away at the back of her mind. However, if she didn’t learn to wield it she wouldn’t be able to safely accompany Yuurei on his journey. She wanted to be there to protect him, but without proper spells to help her out, she would be nothing but a hindrance.

“Here goes nothing…” She took a deep breath before sighing loudly, trying to center herself as she let the mana flow through her body towards her hands. “I guess I may as well see what this magic is capable of…” she’d summon forth as much mana as she could muster all at once, figuring it would be best to see what she was able to wield first before attempting to learn to control it.

Facing both her palms up in front of herself, she’d keep the mana flowing, a magic circle forming and growing larger and larger until she couldn’t force anymore out of her body. Now that the mana was ready, the next step was trying to form it into something. Her mind went to the weapons she used to create, they were easy enough to form. Perhaps this power was able to do something similar, the antique store keeper had called it ‘Dragon Slayer’ magic, it would be strange if it couldn’t be used offensively.

Turning to face away from the tree Nimbus sat perched in, watching from above, Kailani use the mana to rapidly draw in the air around her, causing a small raging ball of wind to form in her hands.

“Alright, easy enough. Now to just…” The wind mage tried to control the raging wind,  attempting to form a dagger the same way she used to. A mistake. As it suddenly burst in her face, sending a rush of air flying out in every direction. Instinctively she raised one arm to cover her eyes, bracing herself from the wind that started cutting at her face.

“Ow…” she’d never been hurt by her own magic before, her offensive spells had always been few, but they were controllable. It seemed this new magic was going to be a little bit tougher to deal with. She rubbed her temple, groaning at how much effort this truly was.

“WHOA! Watch where you’re flinging that magic!” Nimbus screeched from the tree branch, clinging on for dear life as the blast rushed past him, “You’re gonna kill us both at this rate!” he continued to scold, as he pulled himself back up, shuffling closer to the trunk in case it happened again.

“Sorry, sorry.” Kailani chuckled nervously, still feeling the stinging sensation of the small cuts on her skin.

“Ya know, the shopkeeper said it was called dragon-something magic. Maybe you gotta unleash your inner dragon to use it now.” Nimbus commented with a shrug. He had no idea if it would actually work or not, but there was no harm in trying. A sentiment that the wind mage agreed with.

“Alright, then… perhaps…” She muttered, trying to think of something ‘dragon’ related. Claws perhaps? That was something they had, right? And it would make for a sharp weapon like her old dagger.

Closing her lilac eyes, she’d focus once more on bringing the mana forth, stretching out the mana circle as far as possible with her hands facing upwards in front of herself. This time she focused on her fingers, trying to get the raging wind to move and contort around them. Slowly but surely she managed and began to extend them out to double her finger length until they resembled the sharp talons from a dragon’s paw. It took a bit of time, but eventually, she got there. Now she had to test them.

Walking up to a nearby tree on the other side of the clearing away from Nimbus she’d swipe in a similar fashion to how the exceed himself clawed at opponents, slashing through the bark like butter and causing a few splitters to go flying off due to the sheer force of her magic.

“HAHAHAHA!” She cackled maniacally, earning herself a concerned glare from the exceed across the clearing as she swiped a few more times until the spell dissipated.

“Claws…? Really…?” Nimbus’ voice was suddenly closer than before, the exceed having made his way across the clearing while he was busy slicing and dicing up the trunk of a tree.

“W-What’s wrong with claws?” She spluttered, feeling confused. After all the whole dragon thing had been thanks to his urging.

“Well, nothing… but… even I have claws. That’s not all that dragony.” He mused, scratching his chin while showing off his sharp talons.

“Then what would you suggest?” The wind mage sighed, not wanting to argue with him that they felt rather ‘dragony’ to her.

“Hmm…” He closed his golden eye, continuing to scratch his chin in thought, “A dragon head.”

“A dragon head?” Kailani repeated in a flat tone, rolling her eyes at his suggestion, “Right, that sounds real simple…”

“Hey, no need for that attitude.” Nimbus tutted, waving her off, “Perhaps if you embodied similar to the claws, like wearing a mask and then roared so it shot forward. Yes, that would be incredibly cool.” He nodded to himself, puffing out his chest, proud of his suggestion.

The wood elf rubbed their temples, trying to figure out just what he was on about. Create a dragon head mask and then shoot it forward? Was he on the catnip again?

“Whatever, what do I have to lose?” She sighed, giving in to his ridiculous request.

“Only your dignity if you fail.” Nimbus jeered with a smirk, earning himself a glare from Kailani, to which he reacted with a shrug. Rolling her eyes, she decided to focus on trying to manipulate her magical energy into wind around her head. Once she felt the surge of air circling around herself, she began trying to shape it as he had done with the claws until the air surging around somewhat resembled a dragon’s head.

Then released the mana letting it shoot forward into the same tree she was slicing up earlier. It barely made a dent, far weaker than the claws had been, although she did note that the magic circle hadn’t formed properly.

“You call that a roar!?” Nimbus shook his head in disappointment, “Tsk tsk, you should draw it into your mouth and make it chomp down on the tree!” He insisted, his tutelage highly unnecessary. She didn’t need to ‘look cool’ she needed functional spells in her arsenal to be useful on the battlefield. Why didn’t he understand this? However, she didn’t feel like arguing with him right now, instead the wind mage decided to indulge him a little. There was no harm in wasting a little time making something fun she could possibly use later for fun.

“Fine, fine.” She waved him off, getting him to stand back she opened her mouth wide, raising it to the sky as she began to draw air from around her. A magic circle formed and spread rapidly out from her gaping mouth-hole. As the air was drawn in it coated her face, creating a dragon-like mask, with large sharp protruding teeth.

With a thunderous roar, projecting her voice as loud as possible she’d send the spell soaring towards the tree trunk once more. This time as it struck, she’d control it better, forcing it to clamp its jaws down through the bark, tearing out a chunk of wood before it vanished.

“Oh wow…that… was actually pretty effective.” She blinked, not expecting it to work out quite so easily.

“See, this is why you should listen to me more.” Nimbus folded his paws and puffed out his chest, looking overly proud of himself.

“Oh yes, thank you oh mighty Nimbus, for your guiding words, full of wisdom.” Kailani teased, bowing dramatically.

“I sorta want to try it again…” She nodded to herself, deciding to continue practicing the spell. A few castings later she decided to give it a go while also concentrating on keeping up the claw spell. It was a little tricker to use both at once, consuming a large quantity of her mana at once, but the combination was incredibly powerful. She’d never had such strong offensive magic before.

‘Deep breath… In… Out…’ the words rhythmically sounded in her mind as she sat with her eyes closed in deep meditation. After spending so much energy repeating her new offensive spells, she needed a moment to recuperate some of her mana. She was surprised at how much now resided within her body, far more than she’d had before she’d assimilated with the force of the dragon slayer magic. The new portion of mana still hadn’t settled completely within her body, but the well of ethernano within her body had been growing steadily to contain it, but she could still feel it was far from perfect.

As she continued to meditate, she began to focus on the sounds of nature around her. The sound of the leaves as they rustled in the wind, the singing sounds of nearby birds accompanied by the chirping of crickets. As much as she loved her ocean home with the Blue Pegasus, there was something so soothing and relaxing about being in a forest again.

It gave her a sense of peace, despite not being the forest of the elves she’d grown up in. With one last deep breath, she settled her body and her mind finally opening her lilac eyes to gaze at her surroundings. So peaceful and quiet other than the sounds of nature, just the way she liked it.

For the past two years, she had been training with meditation, feeling the flow of mana in the world around her and allowing her body to slowly draw it in and build up her reserves. She was sure that with time she’d be able to control her newfound magic just as easily. The wood elf simply needed to not be too impatient, it was going to be a slow healing process.

Moving from her position, she’d stand up and stretch her limbs. Glancing over to see Nimbus rubbing his eyes sleepily with a yawn. He must have fallen asleep due to the warm sunshine that shone through the canopy above them.

Before attempting anything overly fancy and new again, the wind mage decided it would be best to simply improve on some of her already existing repertoire. Focusing on herself as her target this time around, she’d raise her hand in front of herself, causing a small magic circle to appear, centered on under her feet as she clicked her fingers once and flicked her wrist.

As she completed the flicking motion, a forceful wave of mana was sent soaring down her body towards her feet, mustering the maximum amount of magical energy as she could from her body at once it would begin siphoning in the air around her with tremendous speed and force. Within mere moments the wind beneath her feet was already at its maximum capacity, ready to send her flying towards her choice of destination. Raising one foot she’d attempt to push off the ground, with the plan of leaping into a nearby tree.

“AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!” With a scream loud enough it echoed throughout the forest, Kailani soon found her body plummetting towards the grassy earth before her. The taste of dirt and moist grass filled her gaping jaw as she landed flat on her face. A snickering sound came from behind her where her companion was sitting, watching the scene unfold. Embarrassed at her failure, the pale-haired beauty sat face first in the dirt for a minute, trying to figure out just what she had done wrong. She did exactly as she had always done before, just used more mana than before, why didn’t the jump work?

“I can’t wait to tell Renji about this. HAHAHAHA!” The black and white exceed cackled from behind her, “And here I thought you were finally getting good at controlling your new magic.” He added, wiping a tear from his eye, the scene of her failure truly brought him joy.

Wait. That was it. Nimbus wasn’t just a cute, annoying face, he had an actual point. All this time she had thought simply increasing the mana flow would improve the spell but that wasn’t it. She’d always focused so heavily on the control of her magic, ensuring it was always just the right amount. Pushing herself off the ground, she’d dust herself off, a look of determination plastered on her face as she gave Nimbus a huge grin.

“Thank you!” the wind mage chuckled, ready to try again, leaving her companion utterly confused as to what he had done to earn her thanks. He had just laughed at her, did that help in some way with using magic? Before he had the chance to ask what was on his mind Kailani was already at it again. Summoning forth the circle and clicking.

This time rather than forcing all the mana to rush at once, she focused on controlling how much air she siphoned in. As her spell finished casting and the wind raged beneath her she leapt up towards the closest tree, using the air to push her with extreme speed to a distance she was not previously capable of resulting in her gracefully balancing on a thick branch.

“HAHA DID YOU SEE THAT!?! You were right, control is the key!” She chuckled amusedly in the exceed’s direction, glad she had been successful this time in improving her magic. With another few clicks, she’d repeat the action again, leaping from tree to tree around the small clearing to ensure it wasn’t just a one-time fluke.

“I mean, couldn’t you already do that? How is that any different?” Nimbus rolled his golden eyes, clearly unimpressed with her so-called 'achievement'.

“BUT THE DISTANCE!” Kailani argued, crossing her arms in a huff from up in the tree, resulting in just a shoulder shrug from the exceed who just looked bored at this point. Why was he always this way? Forever the pessimist. With a sigh, the wind mage tapped her chin in thought, the only issue was how much of her magical power she was using with each leap. Especially since she wouldn’t always need to go the maximum distance.

She already had a weaker version of the spell that allowed her to jump around five meters, and this one was around triple that. So if she wanted something in between, perhaps using about half the amount of magical energy she had put into the new leap spell would do the trick? She closed her eyes and thought for a bit, theoretically, it did seem plausible.

‘Alright. Let’s give this a shot..’ she hummed to herself. First, she brought forth the mana within her body, drawing it towards her fingertips, feeling the magical power surge through it, as she clicked, sending it down to her feet as a magic circle formed beneath her, this time only growing to half the size of the last as she flicked her wrist, completing the casting requirements as the wind surged beneath her feet, lunging forwards she realised her mistake too late.

As she leapt, it seemed that the magic was a little lopsided. While it was only half the strength, it had nearly all gone into one foot, leaving the other without a burst and instead of launching her forward towards her target branch, sent her flying off into the side and slamming into the trunk of the tree. Reaching out she just barely managed to wrap her fingers around a nearby branch, pulling herself up before her body had a chance to go tumbling towards the ground.

From below Nimbus’ eyes widened in panic thinking she was going to fall, by the time he’d raced over on his little legs she’d already caught herself, chuckling nervously to herself. Nimbus didn’t even bother to insult her this time, simply shaking his head, another story to tell Renji so they could laugh at the wind mage together.

Stabilizing herself on the branch once more, she audibly sighed, brushing her fringe away from her face. Well, that was certainly a disaster. She had thought simply lowering the amount of mana would do the trick, seeing as she had pretty much perfected her control with double the amount. However, it seemed that was not quite enough, she needed to ensure the air was distributed more evenly as well.

Repeating her previous actions again, she’d bring forth her magic, letting it swirl around her feet, this time she focused on spreading it evenly between her two feet and as she leapt, she managed to successfully fling herself forward towards another tree branch. With a triumphant grin, she continued to repeat the process over and over, trying to speed up the process without losing her footing as she leapt from branch to branch at incredible speed.

Eventually, the wood elf jumped down from the treetops, landing gracefully on the grass below. She was panting at this point, she definitely had been overdoing it a bit with the physical exercise, her body only able to endure so much. While she was capable of amazing athletic feats, she often found she ran out of energy faster than most of her peers. Brone had taught her some breathing techniques he used, which helped slightly, but even that had its limits.

The wood elf flopped onto the ground, spreading her limbs out to help them cool off as she stared up into the sky. Her body was still covered in small cuts, and she was definitely bruised from slamming into the tree earlier, but she figured her injuries weren’t bad enough for her to have to rush off and recuperate quite yet. There were still a few more things she wanted to try.

Closing her eyes, she decided to just rest a bit longer. While taking a deep, slow breath, she began to inhale the scents of the forest. She wasn’t able to say where exactly they were, or what they were, but she could smell the little critters nearby as they went about their own business. And then, of course, there was Nimbus’ scent, which seemed to be growing stronger. Wait. It was getting stronger? Sure enough, the light shining through her eyelids darkened as the shadow of said feline peered over her face.

“Soooo when are you going to try to replicate that spell Kaito demonstrated to you?” the curious voice of the exceed filled her ears. Ah, so that was what he wanted. She smiled gently to him through closed eyes.

“I see, did you love flying with him that much?” She teased, finally cracking her eyelids open, not wanting to miss his reaction.

“W-What it’s not like that!” Nimbus refuted, taken aback, “I-It wouldn’t have mattered at all who it was!” He spluttered, shaking his head profusely.

“When you deny it so strongly like that, it makes you seem suspicious.” The wood elf wagged her eyebrows at him, causing him to become so embarrassed he buried his face in his paws. Chuckling, Kailani shifted to sit back up, taking in the breeze. Yes, she needed to both harness the air around her, and then learn to sail with the wind.

A flying spell had been on her list of things to learn, she just hadn’t planned for it to be today. However, seeing at how much Nimbus clearly wished for it, she couldn’t sit back and ignore his pleas. Running her hand through her lilac locks, she’d get to her feet, standing comfortably as she tried to recall how Kaito had cast his spell.

Stretching her hands out, in a similar fashion to the way the fellow wind mage had, she’d bring forth her mana, allowing it to shoot through her arms, a magic circle lighting up between her shoulder blades. As the mana flowed from her hand to the seal on her back, she tried to focus on how angelic his wings appeared, however, despite her best efforts the wind just wouldn’t properly shift into the form she desired.

The more Kailani struggled, the worse the ‘wings’ seemed to become. To the point she began to exhaust herself from overexertion. Letting the magic drop she’d breath heavily, feeling a pang in her chest. Reaching up she’d clutch at her shirt, falling to her knees as she gasped for breath. Nimbus had been watching on with anticipation, but seeing how much she was struggling his face soon dropped into one of disappointment. However, when she collapsed his golden eyes widened in panic as he rushed over to check on her.

“You idiot, what are you doing, are you alright?” He’d ask, his voice wavering as he began to panic, “Should I get Yuurei?” He tilted his, unsure what he could even do in this situation.

“No, I’m… alright.” Kailani shook her head, the last thing she wanted was the light mage seeing her in this condition. He would just panic and fret over her again, and she’d run the risk of him telling her to stay behind when he went off to face his demons, “I just need a small rest.”

Nimbus continued to eye her with concern, moving to her side so he could rub small circles on her back with his paw in an attempt to comfort her.

“He made it look so easy.” The wind mage sighed, unsure what she was doing wrong. She had followed his movements fairly flawlessly from her perspective. Had she missed something important during her observations?

“Hmm…” Nimbus scratched his chin trying to figure out where she was going wrong, “You know how earlier you had to make your magic more dragony, perhaps you simply can’t copy other people’s spells, but have to make it your own?” He’d offer, unsure if there was any truth to it, but it seemed like a better solution than simply giving up after one failure.

Kailani contemplated it, perhaps he was right, she had been trying to force it, through mimicking someone else. She should really make it her own, even if it meant it wouldn’t be as pretty as Kaito’s angelic wings.

“Alright, let’s keep up with the theme then I guess?” She chuckled nervously, feeling the pain subside and getting to her feet once more. With one final deep breath, she’d picture a pair of dragon-like wings, more closely resembling a bat than the wings of a feathered bird.

Bringing forth her mana, this time she wouldn’t try to force it, instead, she twirled her hand around in a whirlwind like motion, as if to gather the wind like such as a magic circle lit up once more, the air rapidly drawing inwards before spreading out and stretching to form a large pair of demonic wings, the complete opposite to that of Kaito’s angelic ones.

Nimbus’ eyes lit up, excited to test out flight immediately. Kailani was a little hesitant, just because they formed didn’t necessarily mean they were going to be functional. As such, she’d make him wait momentarily, if it didn’t work she didn’t want to accidentally harm the poor kitty. Bending her knees she’d leap upwards as high as she could using all her strength while simultaneously concentrating on flapping the wings, causing the air to stir up around them. It was a little wonky at first, like a baby bird trying to take off for the first time.

Fortunately, she didn’t fall back to the ground below, instead, she managed to bring herself a few meters above the ground. Nowhere near as high as Kaito had done, but it was a start at least. Even if she couldn’t quite soar through the skies just yet, she could at least zoom through the air, which could be useful in a wide variety of situations.

Below her Nimbus almost seemed to be crying, as he watched her above him sadly. With a chuckle she’d swoop down, scooping him up. She was still a little wobbly and she couldn’t go very high up, but it didn’t matter as she zoomed around the forest clearing, letting Nimbus feel the rush of air around him.

Eventually, they landed once more, and she’d fold the wings, and let them dissipate. Nimbus was disappointed, clearly wanting more. The wood elf had a plan, however, as she repeated the spell, giving her a chance to practice it once more, however, this time she focused on the exceed as the target, giving him the opportunity to fly all by himself.
