Steel

It was a dark night in the south Fioran farmlands of Marigold. In the middle of a large flower field where only “Amaryllis Aphrodite” grew stood one Solitary being. He was swinging a sword as tall as himself. Weirdly he swung it with ease and from time to time swung it with but one hand. Steel had just purchased this new sword of his. And so he was trying to get used to it.

The sword was too big to be called a sword. It was just a long and wide blade with a handle. Too big, too thick, too heavy, and too rough. It was both less and more than a sword. You could almost say that it was just a big piece of Iron. Yet it had the love and craftsmanship of a true master when you looked close enough. Most people however only probably got to see the sword close enough seconds from their death. It was aptly called The Executioner's Sword after all.

The moon slowly moved in between the clouds and as it did what used to be a dimly lit field of flowers with next to no color became a vibrant field of flowers red and white in color. Steel Blended well with the red of the flowers as he was wearing his Red and yellow armor and Super suit.

There were times when Ko questioned his commitment to this life. Living as a mercenary, keeping loyalty to the highest bidder, it paid his bills and kept him busy, but some times the danger wasn't worth the pay. Ko wasn't a fool eager for death, after all. He wanted challenges, and he'd been learning recently that he was a small fish in a very big pond.

Those were the feelings Ko had as he stepped out into the field of flowers, the light breeze tickling his nose with floral scents as he advanced. He hadn't wandered onto this field without reason. Mercenaries took whatever jobs they could, and sometimes that meant settling grudges for weak people who couldn't handle it themselves. As Ko approached this stranger, he was starting to understand why they'd hired a third party.

Just the sword the man was swinging around gave Ko pause. It had to weigh as much as he did, yet he easily lifted it with one hand. His clothes were a bit odd, but the durability of his armor was obvious. In comparison, Ko may as well have been naked. His armor was worn and beaten, providing basic protections, but it be like wearing paper if that sword hit him.

Still, some part of him was curious. He was hungry for challenge, a real challenge. Even if he couldn't win, if this man could end him in a single strike, Ko wanted to experience it. So he approached, hand on his longsword's hilt. "You the man they call Steel?" It was hard to get the description he'd been given wrong, but it paid to be thorough.

“You the man they call Steel?” He heard a voice speaking from just outside the area lit up by the moon, The voice came from an area where a cloud blocked the moonlight drenching the voice and person in complete darkness, but from the tone of the voice Steel could guess that it was a male. Steel turned towards the area where he heard  the voice. With his sword still in stance but quite lax if it were someone friendly. Odd that they would know his name but not that it was him though. Maybe his fame had preceded him?

When he had finally turned all the way towards the voice he started thinking. If this had been in Magnolia then maybe he would have some fame as a Fairy tail mage and protector of the city. But this was Marigold and no one really knew him in this area. Was it an assassin? He clearly knew his name and the tone of his voice seemed curious. Steel got into position and raised his weapon towards the voice. He then spoke with a stern voice. “My name is Steel, State your business!” He steeled himself. He was ready for an attack and he was ready to counter attack. His position was pretty normal with his sword in front of his center. A classic dueling position.

Yeah, Ko was in over his head here. Steel was clearly skilled and alert, dropping into a combat stance the moment Ko had called out. The way he maneuvered that sword, there was no way he wasn't at least physically stronger than Ko. If Ko were smart, he'd take the chance to defuse the situation and walk away now. Ko was not smart.

"Nice to meet you, Steel. You can call me Ko. I'm a...mercenary, I guess. You know, freelance. Turns out you've got a short list of people who don't like you. I can kind of figure out why." Ko continued to approach, slowly, sword still sheathed, coming to a stop 10 meters away. "Though if I'm being honest, now that I've met you, I don't feel like joining the list. I get the feeling that'd be unhealthy."

For as much as his mouth was running, Ko didn't take his eyes off of Steel's, watching for signs he was about to move. It felt like he was standing opposite a crouched lion. "But I also can't just walk away once I've been paid. So I was wondering if instead you'd indulge me, and we make this a little friendlier?"

Steel

Steel while not showing it was curious about why his enemy. A mercenary as he had explained himself was unarmed and unarmored(except for the extremely shabby equipment that was visibly torn and rusted.) Steel was actually offended that whoever had sent this guy hadn’t picked someone else.

The fact was. He looked a lot scrawnier than Steel. About two thirds less muscle mass. Sure he could maybe be stronger than he looked, maybe like Steel he had magically enchanted equipment that made him stronger than he looked or maybe he was a strong mage with spells that could shred anything around him.

The fact that he even told Steel that he wanted this to be friendly could just be a diversion to make Steel drop his guard or he was genuinely afraid of being killed by Steel. Steel even felt bad for him and had no intent of actually maiming or killing the man, after all Steel was no killer/murderer. He was a Hero.

Steel spoke again this time in a kinder voice as he felt bad for the man who was at this point 10 meters away from him “Look I am not gonna let you off the hook. I need to send a message to whoever is out for me. I won't hurt you too bad but i'm not losing this fight.”

Steel then tossed the sword off to the side and instead readied his fists. Standing in a standard orthodox boxing stance but turned his hand over and signaled for the man to come at him before returning to his orthodox stance.

Getting Steel to drop his sword was unexpected. Honestly, while Ko didn't know what this guy had done to piss of his client, it was clear that his client was the one who'd had it coming. Anyone who would willingly drop their weapon when someone appears to threaten them wasn't the sort to hurt someone honest. It was a fortunate moment for Ko; even without that massive sword, Ko was certain he didn't have much of a chance at winning. Not unless the other man was somehow much slower or had a hidden glass jaw.

Still, Ko had his pride. He'd fight as hard as he could, take his licks, and then pass them along to the piece of shit that hired him for this job in the first place. That'll teach him to take jobs that weren't properly vetted. "I guess that's as much as I can ask for. Don't worry about sending a message; I'll be visiting that asshole personally once this is over."

The moment Steel made his 'come at me' motion, Ko steeled his resolve and dropped into his own combat stance. In contrast to Steel's orthodox boxing stance, Ko's stance was Joyan, his arms outstretched with fingers folded but not quite clenched in full fists, and his right foot leading forward. The moment Ko's right foot stamped into the ground, a violet magic circle appeared behind his head like a halo, and tendrils of dark magic extended and wrapped around his body.

It wasn't a very potent spell, but Ko wasn't about to approach without trying to close the gap between them at least a little bit. With his muscles now tensed and surging with additional strength, Ko charged ahead, launching a heel strike at his enemy's face as soon as he closed into melee range, keeping an eye open for any potential counter attacks.

Steel

They were both tall people. Steel was actually only around twenty centimeters taller than the other person. He had gotten the person's name at least and it seemed he was angry at his own employer as he seemed determined to go and give his employer some “love” after they were done here.

Steel had only one disadvantage in this fight. He wasn’t aiming to kill. Ko probably wouldn’t have anything against taking a win here and seeing Steel dead by morning. After all, Ko was a professional mercenary and in this case hitman.

Steel was prepared for anything. When Ko started charging at him it felt quite amateurish and while Steel had never encountered whatever fighting style or posture his enemy had. He did the simplest thing. He kept his cool as his enemy got closer and closer. Watching for whatever his enemy might do.

Steel was thinking he would defend for a while. When Ko suddenly threw a “palm heel-strike” Steel who already had his arms up and could see the open palm strike coming simply raised his arms into a guard and blocked the incoming attack with his forearms. A classic boxing guard being one that mainly defended the face. He then started backing off giving Ko the illusion that he was the one in control of the fight's tempo.

It'd be a lie to say that Ko was fighting this battle in the same mindset as Steel. He'd only appealed to keep the fight 'friendly' because he'd seen evidence of Steel strength on full display. That was a selfish mindset, completely opposite from the man who had willingly limited himself just because he'd been asked. There was also the fact Ko had willingly taken a job that involved murder, but that was beside the point in Ko's opinion.

With combat beginning in earnest, or so it seemed, Ko followed through on his palm strike only for it to be blocked readily by Steel's forearm. For a brief moment Ko was glad he'd remembered his hand-to-hand training. 'Never strike hard targets with a closed fist'. Even with his palm, it felt like he was striking a solid cinder block. That armor he was wearing was no joke.

Needless to say, it was clear that Steel backing off wasn't because Ko had put any pressure on him. Ko surmised that he must be playing it defensively to feel him out, make sure he didn't have any spells or something hidden to take advantage of the situation. Since Ko didn't have anything like that, he had to press any advantage he could to try and gain an upperhand before Steel retaliated.

So as Steel backed off Ko advanced, keeping him in melee range. Ko threw out another palm strike in a sweeping motion, swinging his arms sightly wider than necessary to try and keep Steel's attention on his upper body, but not putting forth his full strength. Then, hoping Steel played into his feint, Ko struck with his right, aiming a kick right at Steel dominant knee. Even if it didn't outright injure him, it might be enough to throw him off balance.

Steel

As Steel backed off Ko followed. To any onlooker it might have looked like the two of them were dancing violently.

Steel noticed how Ko in a weird way this time threw a palm heel strike using both arms. Instead of just taking the brunt force of it Steel decided to stop in his tracks so that Ko moved towards him and then aimed a left handed jab towards Ko’s face. If it landed it would probably break Ko’s nose and knock him out ending the fight. Being defensive didn’t mean Steel was just going to take strike after strike.

Steel knew that Ko’s quite light punches wouldn't do much to him and since Ko was fighting so aggressively Steel guessed he was trying to whittle him down. He wouldn't accept being beat. He wouldn’t fall here.

The punch wasn’t designed to kill Ko. It was easily dodged. Ko could just step back and dodge it but would have to stop advancing on Steel to do so.

After throwing the first jab Steel threw another one which if Ko had backed off wouldn’t hit but if he kept advancing would send Ko flying after already having been knocked out. The second jab was also designed to stop Ko’s momentum so that after backing off he wouldn’t just dive straight in again. Steel wasn’t one to educate people who were out to kill him but he wanted Ko to think about his next move.

Steel then returned into a full guard with both arms defending him and made a quick dash away from Ko without turning his back on him creating some distance between the two.

A key aspect in the exchange of blows between foes and the use of feints is the assumption that your enemy will want to avoid your attacks.  This is especially true in a one on one battle, as an enemy will not have to concern themselves with any further threats.  Ko, unfortunately, overlooked this aspect when he attempted to draw Steel's attention to a flashy strike towards his upper body.

Steel wasn't in any kind of mortal danger from Ko's attacks; not immediately, anyway.  With no one else around to back him up, there was no reason Steel couldn't willingly take an attack or two in order to create an opening for an attack of his own.  And that's exactly what happened.  As Ko's attack was being launched, Steel threw a jab of his own.  Comparatively there was little intent behind it; it was clear Steel was barely even attempting to strike him.  Yet all the same, Ko could practically feel the weight behind that punch.

Immediately, Ko aborted his plan for a leg strike, backing off just in time to avoid Steel's jab.  Ko had no delusions about it; if Steel had been more intent on hitting him, that punch would have hit.  Seeing that Steel was already passed the point of letting Ko get free hits in, Ko backed off, avoiding the secondary punch more easily since there was already space between them.

At this point Steel was in control of the pace of the battle now.  Ko couldn't charge in because he was clearly outclassed on that end, and doing so was going to get him laid out.  That only left Ko one option.  While Steel is putting his guard back up, Ko began to approach, but rather than entering melee range he stopped nearly 5 meters away, and instead brought a hand up to his neck, jerking his thumb across it violently and pointing at Steel in a fluid motion.  "I'll split your knees!  Cruel Lance!"

A magic seal resembling gnashing teeth formed at the end of Ko's outstretched finger, gathering the same dark energy that empowered Ko earlier, before firing in a narrow beam directly at Steel.  Not even Ko would call the spell strong, considering he could punch harder than that spell hit, but it kept him out of Steel's reach at least.

Steel kept his distance when Ko backed off. He kept his distance and even backed slowly. That is when he noticed that Ko was keeping the distance as well. But Ko seemed very precise to stay within a certain distance. Not too far away and not too close, but close enough that Steel figured Ko could jump back in again should Steel drop his guard for even a second.

It felt like a long time but in the span of seconds Ko was doing something again. He had raised his right hand and done a throat cutting motion on himself that usually symbolized that one was going to kill the other. He then pointed at Steel and said an incantation, As fast as Ko had started talking Steel prepared himself to dash backwards to dodge the spell. He was fairly sure that if Ko had any truly powerful spells and wasn’t a total masochist he would have already crushed Steel at this point and therefore putting more distance between them could save him from whatever was going on.

Then the magic circle started forming at which point Steel lunged backwards creating a distance of seventeen and a half meters between them. And watched as the spell shot out from Ko’s fingertip. A potentially dangerous spell. After all, Steel did not know how powerful Ko’s magic was and he did not want to actually try being hit by it just to prove a point.

Considering his attack was a mere D-Rank spell, Ko hadn't been expecting stupendous results. At most the attack would have aggravated the man, seeing as even Ko's physical blows had barely even scratched him. However, after barely dodging Steel's last counterattack, Ko couldn't see his way to victory in a close up encounter.

However, any hope he had of earning some ground at range was dashed when Steel responded to his spell by simply lunging backwards, swiftly exiting Ko's spell range by nearly double. Ko might have been shocked if he hadn't been in the throes of combat. As it was, seeing that sudden explosive burst of speed made it clear to Ko that this fight was only continuing because Steel was letting it. If he'd wanted to run, Ko couldn't have caught him. If he'd wanted to put Ko down with that initial attack, he would have. In this fight, in this environment, Ko was utterly outclassed.

Irrationally, that realization made Ko angry. Not because he was weak, but because it was beginning to feel like Steel was toying with him rather than fighting him. "What, is this it!? You throw two punches and then take off running!? That's not a fight, its a game of tag! Fight me, damn it!"

Once again, Ko broke into a run, heading straight at Steel. It took several seconds for him to pass even half the distance that had opened up between them, but even still he kept on going. His previous failure in close range was out of his head now; Ko was now acting an emotion rather than thought. If he wasn't stopped beforehand, Ko would continue charging headlong at Steel, where upon reaching melee range again Ko would use that momentum to launch a flying knee at Steel's chin; leaping from the ground and thrusting his knee up and forward at the apex of the jump.

Steel agreed. Sure he had been playing it very safe, but at this point he could have already finished the fight. He responded to the Ko as Ko started running. “Well then let’s finish this.” Steel didn’t sprint towards Ko but he did move towards him. Thinking that the two would clash in the middle. The moment that they would clash Steel thought to himself would be when he ended the fight. Such wasn’t reality however.

They got closer and closer together and the closer they got the more it felt like time slowed down. Then Ko lept from the ground. Steel hadn’t seen this sort of fighting before and wasn’t ready when the knee hit him in the chin. It was a good strike. But it wasn’t good enough. The moment that Ko’s momentum slowed against Steel’s body like ocean waves against solid cliffs. Steel stepped to the side. He had taken the knee to his chin. Ko was still in the air.

Steel pulled his fist back. This wouldn't be a fine boxing punch like earlier. This was something more akin to what a street fighter might do when “charging” up their punch. A haymaker. Steel simply aimed at Ko’s center mass as Ko was still in the air and punched. Without magic there wouldn’t be anything to save Ko from the punch.

If Steel knocked Ko out here he wouldn’t leave. He would go and get his sword and sit down next to Ko and wait for Ko to wake up again. Steel wanted to talk with the man.

Ko's charge wasn't even likely enough to succeed to be called a wild gamble. Regardless, Ko had committed to this course of action. He didn't even hear Steel's rebuttal to his goading, only seeing that the man had chosen to move forward rather than hold his ground. If anything that spurred Ko on even further, his manic desire for challenge motivating him beyond reason.

They met in the middle, and as planned Ko launched into the air, striking at Steel with his knee. To his surprise, his attack landed perfectly, the force of his knee slamming right into Steel's chin. Ko couldn't have asked for an attack to land better. Unfortunately, he could also tell that the attack hadn't been particularly effective. It seemed to wash over Steel like he was weathering a particularly stiff gust of wind.

Then, as Ko was returning to the ground, Steel struck back. It wasn't the lazy jab he'd thrown earlier, it was a real punch. Ko barely had time to realize what was happening before it collided with his solar plexus, immediately forcing all the air out of his lungs and shocking his body senseless. The force of the punch did more than just knock the wind out of him, it also threw him back several meters, sending him tumbling head over heels before he came to rest on the ground and stayed there.

He was unconscious for several long minutes, though to Ko it was like time had barely passed at all. He jerked back to consciousness with a loud gasp, curling up as the pain in his gut hit him all at once. "Hurk, Gods, I knew he had to be strong but...ugh, like I got kicked by an angry Draqilin..." It took him several moments to realize that Steel was still present, and once he did Ko winced. "Aah, stuck around, huh? You don't seem like the type to gloat, so I'll assume you've got something to say. Nice haymaker, by the way." Even beaten and on the ground, Ko couldn't contain his grin. He hadn't had a fight that one sided in the other party's favor in a long time.

Steel had stuck around to wait for Ko to wake up. He waited quite a while and when Ko finaly woke up Steel was ready. He looked over at him sitting almost by Ko's side. He spoke in a serious but happy tone since Ko seemed not have been injured with lasting injuries. "Good morning. Sleep well?" All jokes aside Steel's tone then got more serious. "I was thinking that well since you said that you were going to go back to your employer. Why dont you take me with you and we can make a real ruckus?" Steel looked at Ko with serious eyes. Because he was quite serious about this. He stood up and bent down slightly reaching out a hand to Ko who was still on the ground. He wanted to show that he had no ill intent towards Ko. He simply wanted to know who was out for him and he wanted to know why. He was after all not just going to let this rest. Further attempts on his life might not go so well for him or the other person. Steel was strong but being strong did not mean he was impervious to being assassinated.

It wasn't often that Ko got into a fight that ended with the victorious party sticking around to crack jokes that weren't at his expense. Ko didn't necessarily mind that; if they won fair and square, gloating was their right. He certainly didn't hold back from gloating after his share of victories. Still, it was a welcome change of pace to actually feel like he could join in on the joke rather than just clench his teeth and take it. "I slept lousy, this mattress is lumpy and the quilts are as thin as air."

Having finally eased himself into a sitting position that didn't make his ribs ache, Ko listened to Steel's request attentively. On some level, Ko knew he should probably say no. As a mercenary that had been hired for such a specific hit, going back and attacking his client was already going to give his reputation a hit. Taking the one he was supposed to be taking out with him would be like putting up a big sign saying 'don't hire this man' around his neck.

Yet all the same, Ko found he didn't care. That client had set him up to take a huge fall, either by underestimating Steel or just out of sheer negligence. Ko had no delusions about it; if Steel had chosen to go at this seriously, Ko would be dead. So he took Steel's hand, and flashed him a wild grin. "I won't say no to that. He's got it coming. Last time I take a job like this without knowing who I'd be fighting first."

Steel

This made it look like Steel was vengeful but in reality he wasn’t he simply did not want to have to fight people if they weren’t truly evil. He did not really want to fight and kill Ko which is why he gave him a handicap. It was also because Steel believed in playing fair. If Ko had no weapons then Steel wouldn’t use his sword against him. Ko had agreed to them going together to where his employer had been and so Steel signed with his arm as if to get moving. “Well then let’s go I guess.”

Steel then waited for Ko to give his answer to their quest. It wasn’t a quest that paid in the usual sense, but maybe it would pay with them both becoming good friends. After all, what would the journey be without the friends you made all along the path.

Steel would keep waiting until Ko started walking. He wasn’t friends with Ko yet and he didn’t want to give Ko an opening so therefore he would walk slightly behind Ko on Ko’s left side so that his dominant arm could strike Ko in the back if he turned on him. It was fair in Steel’s mind seeing as Ko was the one who had been sent to kill him.

If you'd asked Ko a few hours previously how he thought this night was going to go, leading a former mark to the man who'd hired him wouldn't have landed near the top ten.  As it was, Ko couldn't exactly complain how things turned out.  He was still alive, for one; in his line of work, turning out dead always seemed to be one of the more likely outcomes.  In addition, while Steel seemed a bit straight-laced, he was certainly strong.  Ko had to respect that.

"Alright then, let's go find our mutual 'friend'."  It was fairly obvious that Steel wanted him to walk ahead of him for more than just leading purposes, but Ko couldn't blame him.  Its what he would have done in a similar situation.  So he started off down the path without complaint, leading Steel back towards town.  As they walked, they were starting to lapse into silence, so Ko decided to break the ice with some small talk.

"If I'm being honest, I should have known something was up with this job when I took it, but I was pretty drunk at the time.  The guy who hired me, Turg, he's just about the definition of a dirt bag.  From how he described it, it sounded like someone had knocked in on his turf and he wanted help forcing them out.  Didn't expect him to be stupid enough to hire a hit for revenge.  That shit always comes back on you."  Ko glanced back at Steel as he spoke, putting on a tough front despite his throbbing ribs.  "You don't seem like the dirtbag type though.  Lucky for me."

Ko had no delusions about that fight.  If Steel had been so inclined Ko would be extremely dead right now.  And the more Ko thought about it, the more he felt like Turg knew that when he hired Ko.  It made Ko wonder just what the endgame for this whole deal was.  If he was lucky, Turg was just an idiot.

Dancing in the moonlight.[Ko Lesalt-Green] Empty Wed Jun 17, 2020 2:59 pm

Steel

Walking behind Ko the moon would from time to time pass over them sending small rays of light shining down. The fight itself had only lasted for a fraction of the time that Steel had waited for Ko to wake up after having been knocked and therefore it was still almost midnight. The few times that the moon was blocked by clouds it became pitch black making even simple terrain almost impossible to navigate. This led to them having to stop several times when they walked towards their destination.

Steel answered Ko “Well I haven’t really been on anyone’s turf, They might consider me an annoyance because of the hero business but that should be all.” Steel pondered. Maybe these people were actually affiliated with the murderers of his parents. He had gotten a single name “Jackdaw Bronson” And he knew that was what he was going to ask whoever had hired Ko when they got to him. Steel then kept walking and walking hoping they would get there before sunrise. Afterall the cover of night would be appreciated depending on their strategy of attack. Steel spoke some more. “Yeah he sure was stupid. While I am nice to people that are civil and don't harm others. I can be a real pain to those who mess with me and harm the innocent.”
