The sun was high in the sky on the beautiful springtime morning, nary a cloud in sight of the magnificent Domus Flau: an arena as old as the capital city itself. Built at the summit of a nearby mountain the Domus had stood idle, only being used for the occasional fight between training mages looking to strengthen their own abilities. Never before has it been used for something as grand as the event today. The Grand Magic Games: a tournament featuring every guild in Fiore. A chance for every guild mage to showcase their abilities, and the strength of their guild. Every seat was occupied, as the public waited for the first fight to begin. The arena itself,  a circle of 100 meters diameter with marble flooring, was watched over by four warriors: Hercales, Shaka Zulu, Miyamoto Musashi and Beowulf. Four of the legendary Nine Heroes, each with their glorious weapon immortalised in stone beside them, eager to bare witness to the power of Fiore. Both contestants will be instructed to walk towards the center of the ring, stopping in their tracks once both are an equal distance from the center and 20m apart. The fight will then be started via the sound of a blast from the referee.

"The Firebird of Blue Pegasus, Daiko Flayme, is about to face a rare creature indeed. The being known as Aegis, our only Lich contestant and the only non-evil Lich around, is representing Penumbral Guard. Despite the difference in rank between these two, we all know there’s a reason for this matching. It’ll be interesting to see a Lich in action, facing off against one of our favourite contestants."

Hnng… it wasn’t new to Daiko. Fighting another mage and all. However, it sure had been a while, and he was, by all means, very eager to see just how much he was capable of nowadays. He was still sitting in the barrack room waiting for his call to enter the arena, while Coda was resting on a wooden pole near the gate. She was going to stay there as this wasn’t a fight to the death or any random encounter; no no no. He was fighting an official battle at the Grand Magic Games.

The Grand Magic Games.

He had only heard rumors about its time to come from fellow pedestrians passing by the streets. There was no way that he saw the event actually coming, but here he was. And there, the sound of the gate opening for him to step out, in which the Fire Mage prayed for good luck to himself and rose up on his feet. He was wearing his green, sleeveless jacket again - suitable for the mild, early spring weather - but the most notable equipment on him was his gauntlet, the one with what looked like a cat’s face on it. Such a strange weapon… Daiko only had a faint idea of what it was capable of. And that required a lot of punching.

He approached the designated position meant for him in a steady tempo, step after step, with a sharp gaze towards his opponent. He was, shockingly, going up against a Lich… and frankly, he had never even heard the word before. He had no idea what a Lich was, but it was clearly some kind of specific trait that the person had that gave them such a title. Was it a race?

No matter what, whoever was going to fight against him, Daiko would let nothing up from himself! He had only one objective; to give it his all, for his guild, Blue Pegasus! That was his mindset as he stood still, 10 meters from the center and directly facing his opponent.

-Do not fret the Night-

"Together, we will arise with the morning light."

Like most times combat was required, Aegis was not here looking forward to the fight as he was reluctant to engage when not necessary. He had protected a decent amount of people in his time, and had some decent fights, but not one so intense or with things relying on him. His guildmates he could not directly speak before, but for him it was mainly the ability to show and represent Penumbral Guard as a whole. As he stood in a darkened room behind a closed gate, he thought about how old this fight would proceed. I'm like normal, he didn't have much knowledge or preface on the opponent he was fighting, as he found out upon entering. This was unusual for him as most of the time he took the time to study anyone that was causing issues for the guild or for the people.

He was currently in the standard attire he had, with a dark cloak that not only covered his head, but also all the way down to the ground, wrapping around in front of him. The only real indication of a shade not being under the cloak was the blue eyes that shone through. Standing in the darkened and protected room, he made sure to do double checks on his equipment before the scheduled time came, making sure everything was in order.

As the announcer started to introduce himself and his opponent, the doors slowly creaked open, unveiling the large Arena before him. The only thing he knew from the announcer about his opponent that came to mind specifically we're two things. One, that that this opponent was apparently stronger than himself in design of the match. Secondly, there was a reason for this that he was unaware of. He slowly made his way to the stand where the match was to begin. The ring around him was dusty and although his Pace was decent, he wasn't creating any dirt that's sullied his clothing. As he and his opponent took their place, he made a quick nod, as a salute and respect for the opponent for this engagement.

Even while standing upright, his combat actions were ready.

Daiko Flayme
His opponent who walked out a few moments after… they were clad in a thick cloak that concealed most of their appearance to the Fire Mage. It had an eerie feel to it; not only because of the cloak itself, but also because of the faint, bluish lights in where the person’s eyes should be. Was this a part of being a Lich? And what did it mean? Daiko wondered if he would learn more throughout their match, but he happily nodded back at him due to the friendliness that the Lich showed him. While the Lich stood upright yet, Daiko took a more classic fighting pose with his right fist in front of him at a horizontal angle, while his left fist clinging onto its gauntlet was pushed back with the fist pointing straight at the Lich.

This would likely be the ignition of the match. Daiko waited… so did the Lich… how would the Fire Mage fight? And how would his opponent fight? Daiko knew nothing about his opponent or their combat habits, but if he wanted to find out and take advantage of that, then he would have to be a little careful with his first moves…

And then, the blast was fired from the referee, and the battle begun! Daiko’s body transformed, growing out feathers, yellow scales, and a pair of dark-crimson wings spreading out 2 meters to each side.

The Fire Mage dashed straight forward in a lunge! “Bring it, Aegis!”

His right hand, at the end of the lunge as he had presumably cleared 12.5 meters closer to his opponent, pointed straight at the Lich as a magic circle appeared both beneath Daiko as well as beneath the Lich’s feet. At this point, Daiko had braked up hard after his lunge, and his momentum had been lost for a couple seconds. If the Lich didn’t get out of the way or move immediately, a dome of fire would surround him in a 4-meter radius from the magic circle beneath him and proceed to warm him up a little.

"Together, we will arise with the morning light."

As the shot rung signalling the start of combat, even though his face could not be seen well nor could one see the reaction, You could tell he was smiling at his opponents intensity and eagerness. It has been a while since he actually had enjoyment in a fight, as this didn't return to someone being killed or worse. He also saw this as good practice in his new form, as the height difference he suffered was extreme. But if nothing else, this seemed... Fun.

As Daiko did a lunge towards him in the first few seconds, Aegis pushed off with his left foot, stepped back and to the right before coming to a dusty stop, putting about six additional metres between them for a total currently of 13.5m. All while doing this, he kept his upright stance with his extraordinary hight.

As he saw the magic circle below him, Aegis looked down at it. After a split second, the magic circle vanished. As this happened, there was a puff of white particles that came out from under his cloak, slowly flowing onto the ground where the magic circle had been. After reaching the new location and having his feet back on solid ground, he stood back up as normal, but you could tell something was a bit different. While to the normal eye nothing had changed, as a warrior one could tell his stance had changed slightly, he was ready and prepared.

As Daiko would get closer, there would be a feeling of unease he would feel. Unsure if its from intimidation, or the presence alone, it would surely have an effect.

Daiko Flayme
What?! Daiko’s magic circle that was located right under Aegis had suddenly vanished. Only a smoke of white, small particles were left where his magic circle should’ve ignited Aegis just about now… did his magic not have any effect on him? Was his magic useless against Liches or what? Or was it because of something that the Lich possessed that he didn’t know of? Whatever it was, it put him at quite a bind, given that he would have to resort to close combat… unless…

Either way, Daiko had to get closer. Something felt odd about Aegis’ stance as if the Lich was now more ready for what Daiko was about to do. The Fire Mage took off and started running to the side, accelerating to his max running speed after 4 seconds while still keeping the same distance to Aegis. It looked like a wolf circling their prey viciously, but Daiko needed to figure out exactly how he should approach this foe. Would his next spell be reduced to nothing as well?

Suddenly, while running around, Daiko rose his left hand forward and pulled his right hand back to the side of his head. He aimed his left hand at Aegis as a burning string manifested itself from between the two, red magic circles while a sizzling, blazing arrow was pulled back with the string. Without as much as a roar, Daiko launched the arrow straight at Aegis, sacrificing another amount of mana to see just what the Lich’s deal with what happened earlier was… and whether or not the Lich was going to respond differently now.

As a more shocked or uncertain look came across Daiko's face, Aegis couldn't help being more pulled into this match. The loss of one's spellcasting was something most mages are not used to experiencing, regardless of being knowledgeable of how to counter it.
Mostly most people would try to get in melee, but thats where they usually made their first error in judgment. He felt a sense of enjoyment he had not felt in a while.

As soon as his opponent started moving slowly at first but picking up speed quickly, while keeping his body sturdly placed, he made careful and slight adjusting movements to follow closely with his eyes. Not just directly at Daiko, but also the area around himself with almost uncanny speed. Not just in being a mage, but Aegis was a careful creature by nature. This match was a bit harder however, as he felt the need to be even more so as he did not get prior knowledge on the fights.

As Daiko suddenly stopped, Aegis stance immediately changed into a defensive one. It was a martial stance, with deep sturdy leg positioning, and both arms ready and raised at stomach level under the cloak. His Left hand in front of his chest, the other slightly off to the right. Both actual hands were still obscured under the long cloak, but were distinct enough to see.

As Daiko let loose a spell towards Aegis, he waited just until the spell was within arms reach. Still in the stance, he used his left arm and reached out towards the spell, palm towards the opponent, grabbing it in the air as it vanished before his grasp. As the spell disappeared, there was another puff of white, just as happened before. As his left hand continued down to his side once again, the right-hand stayed up, and he then began carefully but speedily walking towards his opponent. While he was not sprinting with murderous intent, his approach had an odd feeling that most would perceive as menacing, but some would call enjoyment.

Daiko Flayme
Daiko kept his eyes on Aegis mainly. He had to see what he had missed earlier; the way that his spells just disappeared. Turned to nothingness in thin air. He was convinced that it was something that Aegis could perform… it must’ve been his magic… but could he nullify two spells? Three spells? Daiko had a limited source of mana, so he had to be careful. And if he wasn’t able to spam spells… then he had to get close.

There it was! The flaming arrow was literally caught in Aegis’ left hand, and it simply turned to nothing. Daiko’s eyes witnessed the event happening in front of him as he kept sprinting to the side, building up speed and keeping a distance… and he could see the white particles again. It was magic! Simply put, it must’ve been Aegis’ triumph card! It didn’t appear to work over a certain range, but any spells that were at his position could be nullified via that crazy spell of his.

I’m starting to feel just how much mana I burn out… that’s it! I’m gonna throw a punch! See if his magic can help him against these fists!

Daiko aimed his sprint directly towards Aegis as the Lich began advancing towards him at the same time. The distance between them quickly reduced to a few feet with Daiko’s built-up speed, and his right and left hand were both raised up clenched. In a blitz, a magic circle wrapped around each fist, igniting them until blazing fire coated them like sweat bands.

It felt like less than a second had passed, given Aegis' own advance towards him... but Daiko had to act quick. Now!

As he approached Aegis’ face from a few feet away, sprinting at full-speed, the Fire Mage launched his right fist first. It was aiming straight for Aegis’ chest! “How about some close-range combat, eh?!”

Let’s see if you can nullify this! I’ll still punch you straight-on!

As Daiko turned his circling sprint into a more direct approach, Aegis stayed on a direct vector. One arm still outstretched, and one closer to his side under the cloak.

"Not a bad plan against a mage, however, you should always plan for one's own apparent weakness!" He said very loudly, and boldly, but in an instructionally and controlled tone towards the opponent. There was not belittlement in his voice, only proudness for the bravery.

As soon as Aegis was within 5m, and about to be within Daikos striking range, the nullification went off, stopping not only the fire that had started to engulf his fists, but also the aura of fire and wing around him. Another puff of white dust and ploom shot out from Aegis, littering the ground. As soon as the fires went unlit, Aegis put his plan into action.

As hard as one would think it to be for someone to of his height to match the reactions of a smaller target, Aegis attempted to do just that. As his opponents right hand and gauntlet came near his chest, his left hand attempted to strike horizontally pushing Daiko's arm away from his chest, leaving his side and back open as both arms would be on the opposing side. While he is open and off-balance, Aegis brings the arm that was under the cloak forward in a slashing motion using the dagger aiming for Daikos unarmored shoulder that was in control and held ownership of the gauntlet. This strike would deal A-Rank damage.

What, again?! Daiko felt that he could, at the very least, push his spell towards Aegis before it burnt out, but nope; in an immediate moment, as Daiko had cleared a couple more feet until he was 5 meters away, his hands stopped flaming, and his entire body reverted back to its original form. No more red wings or yellow scales, and left back was an exposed Daiko. However, he was still aiming for a punch, hoping that-

Nevermind. Aegis attempted to flick Daiko to the side by his arm, which made Daiko swing his body counter-clockwise. The mage braked his spin as he realized that his back was exposed, fearing what Aegis was going to do.

Swiftly looking over his  left shoulder, the Fire Mage saw the glimpse of Aegis’ choice of weapon; a bright, gold-copper dagger advancing up towards his shoulder. However, as blood gushed out, it was from Daiko’s right hand; he had blocked his shoulder from the blade by sacrificing the palm of his right hand. Despite grunting in pain, the Fire Mage proceeded to grab a hold of the Lich's hand holding the dagger, and he thereafter lifted his left, clenched fist and swung it towards Aegis’ arm holding the dagger that was digging through his right hand. Quite reckless of him, but the gauntlet would deal enough damage to ensure him a visible advantage.

Claiming a vital hit and victory:
Aegis definitely did not like fighting with people in CQB, but that's the situation he currently found himself in. While it seemed that he had done a few fights he was still not fully prepared. However Aegis did not intend to hold back as he felt that would be implying that his opponent was weaker or that he didn't hold them in any respect or regard.

As Aegis hit Daiko's striking arm during mid punch and amidst his charge, it caused him start spin, causing his upper body to start moving towards his left. The knife was coming in toward to his shoulder, but now with the new location and angle of the opponent's body, the dagger would have a clear path to Daiko's back. Before he could even directly think of the action, his body had adjusted the trajectory the miniscule amount required in order for the dagger slide directly into Daiko's back at the spine, securing the fight right then and there.

Due to the speed he was running at, not only from the Striking motion, but the play the wounds on his back, Daiko would continue his trajectory forward, without any way of regaining control of the momentum.

Daiko Flayme
The dagger was assumed by Daiko’s view of it to be moving towards his left shoulder for a moment, in which he had proceeded to move as such from before. He was confident that his hand could stop the dagger, even for just a brief moment, so that he could save his left shoulder and, thus, use his gauntlet on his left arm to bash a clenched fist onto Aegis’ face. Admittedly, the dagger had been finely hidden under the Lich’s cloak all along, so Daiko’s actions were more instinctual than thought out when he closed the distance between the two of them at such a speed.

Thus, however, turned out to be of advantage for the Lich who found a way for his dagger to not hit the Fire Mage’s shoulder, but his exposed back. A shot of stinging pain travelled through the Fire Mage’s body as he realized that the blade didn’t hit where he predicted it to land, coughing out in pain and falling forward due to the momentum that he had built up, only slightly tackling Aegis’ slide before continuing to roll forward on the dusty ground, his back in deep pain from the golden dagger’s inflicted injury.

His vision blurred very quickly. But what about his Takeover? It should’ve been able to recover him, just like it did back in Worth Woodsea…

The poor Fire Mage came to the realization, once again, that the feathers and scales on his body had vanished just as well. His Takeover wasn’t activated… was that the reason why he didn’t recover from this fatal injury…?

(OOC: talked with Aegis, and ye, fatal blow to spine knocked me out there :c)

Aegis took a pause as his opponent continued on past him. He was not entirely sure if his opponent was fully downed, so he held his dance for a few seconds. After there was no immediate movement, everyone heard the announcer shout throughout to the arena, calling and end to the match. As the crowd started cheering from the ending of the match, celebrating the vigour of the lost and the strength of the victor, Aegis quickly made his way over to his opponent. While this was a tournament that needed to be won for not just for himself, but for his guild, he wanted to make sure that there was no permanent injuries. As he got within a few feet, a little cotton ball creature slinked out from beneath his cape from its attached position on his back. As it hovered above Daiko, it made a small puff of spores, and did light healing to make sure no permanent injuries were sustained. After making sure he was still conscious and permanent damage was not sustained, he reached down and offered his a hand to his opponent.

"You fought well, and with courage. I can appreciate that. If you ever wish to have a rematch, or to train, I would enjoy that."

If Daiko took the hand, Aegis would pull him up back to standing position and walk with him as he exited the arena. A win for Penumbral guard was a win in of itself, but meeting and forming bonds with the Mages, and to learn about them was an achievement in and of itself. A worthy goal to stride for.
