Kenny

Kenny was by no means a very religious person, he did not partake in prayer at night, he did not attend church during the day and he was an agnostic theist of sorts when it came to higher powers. There wasn’t much to his belief in god, or gods if plurality is needed he believed but at the same time he was not certain. In his younger years his mother would prep her boys up and make them look pretty for church during the week, but she never truly explained to him who or what god was, instead they would listen on and on to their priest drivel with the same story over and over again and to Kenny it just wasn’t right, especially since it seemed the church was more interested in collecting a purse than aiding those in need of charity. Kenny was not religious, and the green in the church system backed this lack of faith as he did not see a holy spirit, or divine presence but only the greed of man as it put a golden plate in his face and asked for a jew jewels for the hungry, pity for the penniless and other nonsense associated with helping those in need. As it turned out when it came to helping those in need the church, or at least those he saw helped themselves.

Now, with this mindset did that mean Kenny could not be led to faith? No, he was more than willing to learn about any and all of the religions he could, the only issue was he could not subscribe to just anyone. It meant signing over his faith and love to someone or something that he wasn’t certain of, and he had nothing against those who did it, but is seeing not believing? Mayhaps, but is the absence of evidence not evidence of absence? Ah the maker and his plan were a strange thing for Kenny to think about, how could someone so diving hide themselves for so long? Meh, it was best not to think about it right now.

The doors of the church opened, it was mostly empty save for a few people lined up at the confession. How interesting that was, some seemed nervous, others seemed snobby and very few seemed to be high in their spirits. Was confession even real? Could a man speak for god? Kenny would find out. He stood in line behind a sickly looking man who was mumbling to himself, Kenny caught every other word before the gentlemen would enter the confession. The beard crossed his arms and waited his turn before the gent would step out of confession with a wide smile on his face. It seemed he had gotten some good news. It was Kenny’s turn now and he would enter the booth, it was sort of dark, no and cramped, he would sit down on the red cushioned bench next to the grated window. On the other side of the window a man’s voice spoke soothingly.

“What brings you to confession today my son?”

Kenny’s eyes narrowed and he looked at the grate confused, ‘son?’ ah that was right, names and such for those who were unknown. “Father, I come needing to repent…” his words trailed off as he waited for an answer. He wasn’t sure if this was how it worked but he waited for answer.

“Go on.”

“I uhm… betrayed my love.”

“Go on my son.”

“I betrayed myself, I’ve abandoned those who rely on me and I have killed man.”

“Go on my son.”

“I have also tried to take my own life through them.”

“Go on my son. Go on.” the father’s voice fell to a whisper.

“Ah it’s useless…”

“Go on…”

“I killed… I allowed the killing of a drunk, a glutton, but well before his murder I tried to get him to take my life because… I- I felt weak, I was still lost and I did not see my lovers true intent in her words. I fell to mere words, and lunged at him, tried to get him to cut me open so I could die then and there because of envy. I was involved in the killing of someone’s son.”

“You sound pained. The sin is terrible and it is just if you suffer. But with this pain, your life could be redeemed. But if you do not believe that you will not change. You tried to take your life out of envy, and that was to be your ultimate downfall, yet you lived. Take that chance at life and live on with it, find this lover of yours and cherish them as you need to reconcile any emotion you feel. Also it may help to donate yourself to a higher power my son and Join the-”

“GUILD! JOIN A GUILD! You’re right! I shall join a guild, thank you father.” Kenny stood up and opened the door to the confession, swinging it open and breaking it off a hinge as he bolted out of the church and to the nearest road. It was time…

“I was going to say church… We need more volunteers.” the father mumbled to himself.
