Well, it was official. Infinity Wolves set up base in Astera. If Eternal Nightmare didn't know about them before, they definitely knew about them now. Even so, as Atani walked through the streets within Oak Town, she made the conscious decision to keep her guild emblem covered. Thanks to the chilly autumn air, this proved to be far less of an issue than it would have been in someplace like Hargeon which remained warm all throughout the year.

Atani readjusted the scarf around her neck and pulled it up to rest gently atop her nose as a cold gust of wind blew by her face. It was probably just a coincidence this day happened to be so cold and dreary, but it was funny that day after day of having seen beautiful days in Baska and Astera, the moment she travels to a dark guild's home base (need she mention, Eternal Nightmare's home base of all places, the very guild run by a Wizard Lord who just so happened to be a lich) the weather suddenly took a turn for the worse. It almost made her want to huddle away in her room at the inn, but she unfortunately had a quest to do.

Or, well, she would have a quest to do that day if she could just find the damn request board. Seriously, where the hell was it? She knew for a fact that Oak Town was in no shortage of supply or demand for mages' work. For a light mage such as herself though, that was hard to see firsthand when there were so few locations for legal quests to be found. It was almost as if the town operated primarily through underground means. Imagine that.

At long last, she found the board she was looking for. As sparse as the board itself was, Atani frowned when she saw that the jobs posted to them were just as few in number. After briefly reading them all over, she ended up selecting a small one put out by Lord Servas Phantasm. She had heard of him in passing. Of what she heard, nothing seemed particularly notable of the lord aside from rumors of making deals with demons. But again, this was Oak. What else was new. Atani herself didn't really have any room to judge apparently making deals with dark spirits in a life she couldn't remember. How much different was one with a demon?

From what she could tell of the quest Lord Servas Phantasm put forth, no business regarding demons was mingled there. In fact, his request didn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary. In fact, it was entirely of an altruistic nature. Though Eternal Nightmare more or less governed Oak through its presence alone from what Atani gathered, Lord Servas Phantasm exerted a considerable amount of influence on his own. With his family's lengthy history in the town, he likely felt some sort of responsibility towards its citizens. His latest contribution to the town was a lacrima network of beacons to ensure the citizens' safety. That was something Atani could get behind.

Arriving at the construction site, she saw a guard placing logs. She briefly introduced herself and gave some words of encouragement. The beacon was nearly finished and far surpassed her expectations. He and his crew was doing a fantastic job. The second construction site displayed a finished beacon, but was accompanied with a guard asleep. She frowned and gently shook him awake. Though the job was done, she still wanted him to be alert in case the enemies Lord Servas Phantasm was worried about decided to sabotage the job.

So far, everything seemed to be going smoothly. All that was left was to check the third and final beacon towards the north of Oak Town. The fastest way to get there was to travel through the woods. Though she knew folks were warned not to venture to deep into the forest, especially within towns like Dahlia or Oak, Wood Elves like her took little heed of that warning. Nature was in her blood. No matter what creatures lurked in the shadows, she felt far safer in her domain than she did on the streets of an enemy town.

The first thing she noticed was the unfinished beacon's peak visible through the tree branches. It looked like this guard might need some more motivation too. When she came to the clearing, she saw the guard responsible for the tower laying on the ground. At first, she thought he was asleep too, but as she grew closer, she realized she couldn't see the rise and fall of his chest. In the midst of what she assumed to be his slumber, he didn't move a muscle. Alarmed, Atani ran over to the body. His eyes were open, a face of pure terror frozen in rigor mortis. There was some hope in the elf's heart that he was simply petrified, but upon checking for a pulse, she knew that was not the case. The guard had been killed, most likely through some sort of magic, but she had no time to determine the cause of death herself. Instead, she did what she could and went back to alert the remaining guards to the threat. Atani's work was finished. The remaining problems would be dealt with by the guard service.
