Noel had surrendered himself at the beginning of August X789. The male Blue Pegasus wizard was taken to the Era Dungeon from Myras local county jail - booked in the same day. An officer began reading out his rights upon his transportation to Era Dungeon. Noel replied that he understood his rights, and was asking for a lawyer. The officer seemed cordial in this request, but it was no secret to Noel that this request was the least favorite that they had to facilitate. This way, they wouldn't catch him telling things he should not tell. Newspapers across the nation began writing about the "capture" of Noel Raion, news spread fast. While he did not have legal representation yet, when the news traveled as fast as it did - it did not take long for lawyers queue up to join Noels side. High profile cases like his own usually attracted a lot of lawyers - giving Noel the liberty of hand picking his lawyer.

In the Era Dungeon, Noel was given a somewhat spacious cell in the max security detail. No magic could be used here, nowhere in these dungeons a spark of mana could be ignited. Noel had tried, but it was unsuccessful. It was not his first time here - though this time, he was assured of his innocence. All just a misunderstanding, that's what it was. That being said, the adult male was a strategist in heart - during his stay in the dungeons, he wouldn't reply to any questions except to express for his desire to talk to a lawyer.

The cell had a simple wooden table at its center, a bed and a tiny window. A small light shone through this window. Noel was allowed to communicate to the outside in order to find legal representation. This warden gave new prisoners their first letter pigeon for free - an offer Noel couldn't refuse. Since he was not sure he could pay his second from the cash he had on him, this was going to be the golden duck that connected him to the outside. An army of potential lawyers awaited him at the other side after all.

Though with the money he had put aside in his estate for this type of business, he did not have to worry. However long it took, Noel idly awaited in his cell while repeated interrogation attempts by multiple officers of the law took place. They were very good at hiding the fact that it was an interrogation. You could call them inexperienced, these officers handled regular cases - this one was not regular. Confusion regarding Noels legal representation began to be cleared once it was known that he as a matter of fact was apart of Blue Pegasus. It appeared that Blue Pegasus had a guild lawyer, not just any one - they had Robert Shapiro. An advocate kept on an expensive retainer by Blue Pegasus.

Three days prior to the court hearing

Noel and Robert Shapiro met up in the Era Dungeon, in his own prison cell. This was the first time they talked - attorney and client privilege meant that no words shared between them left the room. The prison was not allowed to surveil meetings held between Noel and his own attorney. During their first meeting, it was mostly Robert that did the talking. He'd ask questions regularly, but they were very specific - requiring a one word answer more often than not. He'd explain to Noel all his rights, what was happening currently and what was going to follow.

His first sentencing was taking place three days from now. "Truth is, mr. Raion - before arriving here I've already put in some work." Robert said to Noel, he went on to explain and give some examples. "Our court building will be in downtown Era. Here we have a bigger chance of getting a demographic more understandable of your actions. Instead of nobles that haven't seen a lick of combat." This man was good, Noel was convinced of his skills to continue with him leading the defence. The session lasted a hour and half, with a new session planned the next very day.

Shapiro explained to Noel about the increased media publicity that the case was gathering. How it might positively impact the outcome of the case. It did not seem like he was a criminal attorney - with the experience he gathered at Blue Pegasus, he must have been excited for a case such as this.

Former Lamia Scale and Advent World wizard, father of three, former warden of the west & north, Noel Raion was to be charged and tried on three separate counts.

Count 1: Unlawful execution of leading Aquatic alphas;

Count 2: Unlawful purging of ghosts;

Count 3: Werewolf mass murder;

Noel confirmed with his lawyer that he hadn't say anything to the officers except for a request for a lawyer. So they couldn't necessarily use dirt - if anything, his behavior whereas he turned himself in had given him a small boon with the judge. During Noels next session with his lawyer, which was the following day, Robert appeared to be slightly nervous. The lead prosecutor deputy district attorney had been chosen, and the judge was confirmed. The prosecutor is a state lawyer that went by the name Marcel Clark. The judge was a veteran, who went by the name Lance Ito. Noel felt quite confident the day before their first hearing. Robert visited one final time, and this time again he had some news to share. "The prosecutor is demanding capital punishment. Wants to set an example if you don't settle this out of court." Robert explained the advantages and disadvantages to confessing to his crimes. Since the initial charge was very heavy, the prosecutor expected Noel to surrender quickly.

Robert seemed to be confident in beating the charges, he had been studying the charges quite thoroughly and felt that rejecting the deal was in Noels advantage, it was ultimately his choice however. Noel decided to continue with the trial - even if the prosecutors charge was as heavy as it was.

During the day of court, Noel was given a suit by his lawyer in prison. One he could wear at the trial. Robert explained that the prosecutor haggled down his charge, if Noel confessed - the new and updated charge being a year in prison, and ten years of probation. Noels lawyer thought it was a fair deal, something Noel should really consider. He had an hour to think about the offer.

Robert knew Noel would refuse, as he indeed refuse the offer. He wanted to fight this out in court, as he was convinced of his own innocence in the manner. The first trial was actually a preliminary criminal hearing. The court room was quite empty, save for a few figures such as a security guard, a notary - the judge, the prosecutor, his lawyer and himself of course. The prosecutor read out the charges against Noel, and the judge after listening to the charges turned his face to the defense.

The case had been changed for Robert Shapiro, the Blue Pegasus lawyer - who was for the second time in his life representing a client who called national attention towards himself. During his next meetings with Noel, he went into deep detail about the strategy of their defense. After making sure all the facts given by Noel worked out, Robert had an interesting way of beating the charges. "I will argue for entrapment by the quest givers, and we will push the moral narrative. The consequences of your actions will be highlighted." Robert had made lots of notes. "Thank you for helping me out with this, Robert." Noel was quite grateful, this case was bound to get stressful for both himself and his lawyer he was sure. It had been more than a few days since he was imprisoned. He was excited to return to home.

This life wasn't for Noel. He didn't want to spend in the dungeons any minute longer than he needed to. He was still being respectful to his surroundings, for he knew he'd leave earlier if he kept his cool. The judge was currently interviewing 24 possible jurors, based on a 20-page questionnaire. There were going to be 12 jurors, and 12 alternative jurors.

A week later, the criminal trail had officially begun.

The court was quite packed during the first day. Unlike the first meeting, this one saw many more faces. Faces from the press, law students, vague relatives, the jury, and many other people. The judge opened the start of the trial by welcoming everyone who attended. He first asked if the state was ready to proceed, which they were - and then the defense, which also was ready. The clerk who was seated in front of the judge, albeit at a much lower position read the oath to the jury.

The judge begun to explain the charges to the jury. He also explained that it's the juries solemn responsibility to determine if the states responsibility has proven its accusations without a reasonable doubt. Lance Ito went on to explain the workings of the court case. About several procedures, how to handle evidence - and that there was no speculation allowed about objections. Jurors can also take notes during the trial. Lance continued by explaining that in the opening phase, both lawyers if willing will preside the jury with an opening statement in which the things they tell are not evidence. The jury shouldn't consider it as such, as evidence will have come to them in the form of documents, photographs and testimony from the witnesses.

The state went first, which meant that the prosecutor Clark could set the tone for the entire criminal trial. Noel looked sharp today, the suit his attorney had brought him from the criminal court was worn once more. A pair of magic cuffs sat around both his hands. Normally, the accused are allowed to sit in court without shackles - but in Noels case there was too much fear for the safety of the members of law.

The state went first. It was their objective to dehumanize Noel, as anything said in the opening wasn't regarded as evidence. In their intent to prove Noel as guilty, their strategy was to lead the jury on with what they think the suspect should be punished for. If their evidence was rocky, they were going to push the emotional side instead of the factual side. Robert Shapiro predicted that Miles would go into the injuries inflicted upon the many various monsters Noel purged from this planet. He was right. The prosecutor, in his speech, began to portray a humble family, horribly suffering from Noels fate ultimately.

Robert was right. The prosecutor was quite the bloodhound, Noel could see the moods of the jurors shift with each passing second Miles continued into his opening of the case. He went into the crimes Noel was accused of, the injuries he inflicted upon the monsters - how it rarely was instantaneous, other than the ghosts in Oak; they were given no chance to surrender. He'd ask the jury a rhetorical question about what they would have done, had their mother or father died when they were a child - brutalized by Noel. The case was opened with evidence, that according to the prosecutor led to a pattern. A pattern of destruction, he'd argue. Wherever this man went, trouble followed. Robert Shapiro was getting nervous, he'd abruptly shout out for an objection - that came to be instantly overruled by the judge.

Miles continued from the queue given by the judge to proceed. This is when Miles went into a gray zone, and explained to the jury how the defense knew the guilt of the victim. Questioning the nature of Roberts objection. The jury wasn't supposed to question the intention of an objection, who'd interrupt Miles upon realizing what was going on. This was a high IQ move by Robert, as he knew this bait was going to trigger Miles in - shifting the minds of the jury from his opening to the objection that didn't pass.

The prosecutor sat down, and most people out of reaction relaxed into their chairs. He seemed to carry an intense stride. Noel was certain that this was a sign of a good prosecutor. The initial reaction was very mixed. Which was good, 'within reasonable doubt' wasn't really struck across all different faces of the jury. With a bomb shell intro like Miles', there was bound to be a more confident jury was what Noel thought. Luckily the expensive lawyer portrayed some experience.

Roberts opening, which partially was also an immediate defense to Miles' went in a reverse flow when compared. Before Robert could start however, the judge began to coach the jury on the different procedures of the trial, once again. He repeated how if there were reasonable doubts in their minds as to the guilt of the accused, then they must bring him, the judge, a verdict of not guilty. An unanimous vote dictated the outcome of a trial, as the death sentence was mandatory in this case.

The good of the people, that was what Robert advocated for. How a man who rose up from the east took matters into his own hands and aided those who requested his help. He called Noel good at his job. So good that complaints from his former clients were reduced drastically. How the church in Oak no longer had an issue with ghosts appearing, how a family moved back into the farms in Orchidia - which was once ruled by an infestation of werewolves.

Fishers in Port Astera, while obstructed by the infestation of octopi, they could at least continue with their business peacefully - no more newspapers with headlines about fishers being swallowed in one piece by monsters of the seas. It still happened, of course, but these abductions now occurred deeper into the sea rather than at the shore.

The morality of Noels crime was clear to Robert Shapiro. It was not a question if he did it, because he did - but it was a question that asked if he was not supposed to do it. This was a dangerous strategy, maybe even reckless. It cast a large doubt upon the shoulders of the jury. Robert begun telling personal stories about Noel, how he was a father of three - a warrior torn by witnessing the destructive spin Fiore had taken.

When Robert was done, he went back to sit in the chair next to Noel. During this transition, the court became a bit more audible - especially after Robert was done talking. Rumouring in the audience, the jury writing away at their notes, while the prosecutor was going through his notes. The trial against Noel had officially begun. After witnessing Roberts opening, he was confident that he could win this case. Even he believed that great injustice was done upon him. That it required rectification from all facets of the law. He took a shallow breath, the judge took a shallow swing with his hammer to restore order into the court.

Testimony had begun, the state prosecutor called his first witness. It was a fisherman from Port Astera. The judge asked Mr Clark to call his witness. Who did as he was told, the clerk read out the oath after the witness was seated to the witness. The state prosecutor begun asking the witness questions such as the intention of the job. Robert Shapiro called in an objection, asking for specification. Judge agreed, the prosecutor began asking specific questions as to the nature of the job. The witness explained that there was a monster out in the sea, harassing and sinking fishing boats. Those fishing men had grouped together and put out a request for a high ranking mage to put an end to it.

They didn't expect Noel to end it permanently, which wasn't the job description - according to the witness. His answers somewhat put Noel in a negative light, as if the monster he defeated was a pest - but not one in needing of eradication, apparently. After Clark was finished asking questions, Robert took the opportunity to cross examine the witness. He'd ask the witness about the casualties leading up to the request which called in Noel. There were more than a few. Fathers of a few families, that could no longer support their family - as Robert Shapiro eloquently put it. Robert begun to strike at the morality of the witness after getting his answer. Saying that the way the fisherman phrased the job to his client as grand, citing many casualties to Noel - and implying that he put a 'stop' to it. It seemed quite effective, Roberts cross examination went smooth. Only one objection was called by the prosecutor, who had doubts towards to the relevacy of the case - which the judge let continue. Though after going into the details of his hiring practices, the prosecutor objected one more time - this time however the judge agreed to the objection, and Robert was done asking questions. The witness was excused by the judge.

The judge then had called in a fifteen minute break before the trial proceeded. The clerk begun gathering all of the notes of the jurors, who were brought to a special break room by a guard. The judge called Robert Shapiro and the state prosecutor Miles Clark to his office during the break. Noel was curious as to why, but he was sure he'd find out later. He'd guess the state prosecutor was offering Noel an updated deal if he confessed to the crimes - which forcibly put him in jail. He felt innocent, maybe the jury did too? Five minutes before the break was meant to be over, Robert left the judges office and went into the courtroom, where Noel idly sat. His assumption was correct. This time, the state prosecutor offered four months in jail. Two years probation.

Noel asked Robert what he thought of the deal. He was convinced Noel shouldn't take the deal - the initial charge of the death penalty was a bluff set on early in the trial that hadn't been changed since the beginning. It has become their disadvantage now, because the bluff has been called. Robert thought the jury was likely convinced Noel did the crimes he was accused of, but had it in their hearts not to give him the capital punishment.

A second witness was called in by the state prosecutor. They too were read their oath by the clerk. After being seated the state was open again to ask questions. This witness Noel had met a few months prior. They lived in Dahlia - where one of the crimes happened. Unlike the previous witness, this one was simply an eye-witness. Clark asked questions about Noels destructive side, how those werewolves were eradicated without being allowed to surrender. Robert objected to one of Clarks questions, raising the relevancy of the question of the prosecutor to the case. The judge allowed Clark to continue, with some leeway. Clark didn't have any further questions and sat down, Robert was on his feet again to cross interrogate the witness. He'd ask about the history of the werewolves, making it seem like Noel was just in 'cleaning' the infested farms in Dahlia. The jury was understanding, they were no fans of werewolves from what Noel could tell. They did not sympathize with the victims of Noels crimes. The prosecution did his job the best he could, from what Robert and Noel felt - it just wasn't enough. The witness was excused by the judge. The next witness was called in, the direct victim of Noels crimes. The half human son of a werewolf. Clark opened with questions about his previous squatting situation. Robert objected, saying it wasn't relevant. The judge agreed.

Even Noel could tell Clark tried to get on the sympathetic side on the jury with this witness. So did the judge, therefor accepting Roberts objection. Most of the questions followed, Robert keenly objected to - for each objection he'd machine gun out some legal jargon that Noel wasn't bright enough to understand. After a rapid succession of those, Clark withdrew from asking further questions. Roberts cross examination was quite a spectacle. He applied socratic thinking as to the motives of the witness' family infesting the farm prior to Noels arrival. The expensive attorney attempted to show to the jury how big of a problem in Dahlia it truly was, having those werewolves there. He dug into the history of their existence, how during several months in Dahlia there were gigantic food shortages - shortages that werewolves suffered from too, who considered themselves the apex predator of that area. So they took the farm for their own, and bullied anyone off of their illegally claimed land. It painted Noel in a pretty good picture. This witness was this trials last, he too was excused by the judge. The judge retired the jury, the trial was set to continue the next day.

Noel felt pretty good about how day one had ended. A myriad of press agents were storming a brew up at the front of the court house. While Noel was escorted back to jail, the prosecutor made a press statement how he felt confident that 'proper punishment' was due upon Noel Raion. During the deep night, Noel heard unchinckling of handcuffs. It woke him up and made him face the entrance of his jail. Nothing there - must have been paranoia. He didn't like this place. According to Robert, every thing mail related to Noel came to be suppressed after the trial started. The prison claimed that they couldn't keep ensure the safety of all letters sent to Noel.

The second day of the criminal trial the people of Fiore v. Noel Raion had started. The courthouse was as crowded as the day before - the media hype had been bubbling for quite some time.

Once everyone was ready, the state prosecutor mandated a request to put forward exhibit number five into evidence. It was a photograph displaying how Noel slayed an angry sea monster. Robert immediately objected, claiming the probative value of displaying it is outweighed by how prejudicial it was. The judge suppressed the motion, the prosecutor could continue. He'd open a folder, and display a picture taken by a witness in which Noel is seen effortlessly dispatching it with a high ranking spell. The picture was passed around the jury. After which the state prosecutor put the picture back in his folder.

The judge asked both sides to make their closing statement. Robert Shapiro went first, followed by the state attorney. The defense attorney stood up prior to his speech, he'd approach the jury and rest his hand on the side of the barrier, keeping them and the jury separate. "I ask you, is the world a better place with men like Noel Raion in it?" Robert continued with his opening statement, reiterating how the consequences of Noels actions have ensured a more safe Fiore - despite the lack of privileges and rights he's acknowledged. A man who follows the principles of an eye-for-an-eye. A necessary evil, Fiores one true hero - who simply gets the job done. Robert made it personal, imposing upon the jury that if they were under threat, who'd they'd rather have help from; Noel who breaks the rules to get things done quick, or someone who'll first wait for your house to burn down before helping you. Robert argued how his only crime was accepting the jobs presented by his clients, and then closed his statement in the same fashion he opened it.

It was now the prosecutors turn to express his closing words. Noel had confidence in Robert - everything in the way he handled this case was perfect to a T. He couldn't have done a better job if he studied as hard as he did. His attorney was truly talented. Next up was Miles Clark though; the closing he was about to deliver was going to have great influence on the outcome. Noel peeled his ears and attentively listened. Miles explained the grave acts of his client, how they had great ecological impact. How this trial was short of a confession, the only thing required to put Noel in for good. He went on great detail about his destructive side; daring the jury to assume that Noels pattern of destruction was boundless. That these incidents weren't the only he'd cause if let free out in the world. His closing statement was good. It made Noel nervous. Miles was done delivering his closing statement and sat down. The judge retired the jury, laying upon them the responsibility to make a choice that ultimately decided the life of Noel. If there was no reasonable doubt as to the crimes of the accused, then they must decide through an unanimous vote in order to decide the outcome.

The line about a repeating pattern of destruction echoed within Noels mind as the jury left the court room. His fate ultimately laid upon their hands. The judge called for a break until the jury had decided. If they couldn't come to a decision today, the judgement was to be postponed to another day. At three PM, Noel was escorted back to jail. The jury couldn't come up with a decision today - which meant that they were somewhat conflicted by their decision, Noel figured. What other reason could there be?
