Kazimir Seiryu
With the success of their last mission, Kaz was sent out to meet up with Snow once more. Well, he more or less told the knights he was going to. They had learned about a string of villages on the outskirts that were also in need of help. The connections had been mostly cut between them.

The two mages took some time to gather the supplies they needed and had agreed to meet back at the first village. it was positioned near a mountain.

As he approached the area it was clear to see what the problem was. A large avalanche had toppled onto the winding path blocking travel.

Before they left the other village, the chief told them that this place had experienced darkness in the night. One that sucked the power from their lacrima, leaving them exposed to the elements and without power. The chief heard nothing more from them since that message.

Kaz sighed heavily at the inconvenience. He gathered up his mana and cast a violent gust of wind, blowing away some of the dense snow that covered it.

A quick shadow moved near the top of the peak. A figure that was cloaked in shadows and seemingly had a trail of darkness behind it. The figure faded away like shadows retreating from the light.

A small tunnel was beginning to form when there was a faint cry.

"HELP, Anyone!" A shrill voice cried out, carried over the cold snow. "Someone's buried in the avalanche," He took a step forward and scanned over the area. He turned and whirled trying to pinpoint the sound. It wasn't near or he would have felt the vibration in the wind. No...it was further up the side of the mountain amidst the dirty white snow.

He was ready to wander upward when he heard the sound of a familiar person approaching. Snow was sure to arrive soon and she would have probably noticed the mysterious figure as well.

Snowflake

Eternal Winter

Snowflake didn’t expect she’d be meeting Kazimir so soon, after their last plea mission and as much as she would prefer not to admit, she thoroughly enjoyed their last quest together, which was a rather rare experience for her, considering how she hardly gets along with anyone she pairs up for a mission.

Thanks to the snow from the night before, some poor souls had been conscripted into shovelling the city’s most fashionable districts. Businesses stayed open year-round, and despite the slick sidewalks and slushy cobblestone streets, the capital city was just as vibrant that afternoon as it was at the height of summer sky. With her sheathed sword draped over her, the hunter exited the gates of the town to travel to their meeting point, the village that they visited during their first mission near the outskirts of the town. Apparently, it was located near the mountain and they would be heading there to fix whatever problem that they were requested for.

She didn’t bother asking the details of their quest when she arrived at the village, thinking that she would just interview Kazimir later when they meet. The less conversation, the better it was for her. With a simple greeting to the villagers, she departed to set off towards the mountain. It was quite a trudge through the snow to get to her destination, with how thick the snow was and the cold wind picking up every few seconds at the base of the mountain. It didn’t take her long to realise than an avalanche had fallen, burying some of the citizens that were close to the disaster.

”Kaz—“ she was interrupted, noticing a mysterious figure at the peak of the mountain. Cloaked from head to toe, it made it hard for her to discern who the person was, but if her assumptions were right, the avalanche was forced by someone—one who was familiar of dark magic. ”Did you see…that?” She watched him melt into the darkness, away from their vision. The woman shook her head; she’d solve this later, she thought, there were people’s lives at stake.

”Thank god, there’re people still alive.” She gazed up aimlessly at the mountain, a hand concealing above her eyes from the sunlight, to see how they could get up there to rescue the survivors. ”Also,” As she passed by Kazimir, she’d leave a pat on his shoulder, greeting him properly. ”Good to see you again, Kazimir.”

Kaz lowered his hand and the gust of wind he was releasing died down when he heard Snow speaking. "Yeah...Yeah I saw it,"he said in an unnerved tone. Unsure about what it was. Creature or a person that slunk away in its own darkness. "Whatever it is. We'll probably need to take care of it later,"he said even though it was obvious that they would. Having Snow here now lowered the stress of the situation. They worked well together before and he was glad to have her at his side for this one.

Seeing her search for a route up the mountain he was about to speak when she patted him on the shoulder. Had she actually given him a warm greeting? His immediate instinct was to make a quip about the moment but he didn't want to ruin it. "It's good to see you too Snow."

He stepped forward with her, "Once we get closer I may be able to sense their movements. If he used his magic who knows how much mana that would cost him to keep blowing all the snow away until they found them. A dangerous idea with the need to deal with that darkness later.

Instead, there was a series of large rocks dotting the side of the mountain, poking through the intense rush of snow from the avalanche. He took a rope out of his pack, "We can do this the long way if you want, I'm afraid if I use my magic to blow anything away it may put them in more danger." He dashed upwards across the wind to the first large rock and tied the rope around it. it was long enough to trail back down through the snow to where his comrade was with plenty extra. "We can also use it to lower the trapped civilians down," he called back, and there was one thing he was sure of. If she could control ice then perhaps if there was a second avalanche she could mitigate it.

The yells still echoed from an ice-covered cavern somewhere among the snow. Kaz searched for it and leaped to another rock to secure the rope once more. "I don't sense anything yet." He left her with plenty of slack so that she could climb it up another path towards rocks and they could fan out their search.

It wouldn't take long before their paths converged at a central rock higher up, and the yells became painfully clear that they were close. Kaz could feel the vibration in their breathing and quickly looked at Snow, "Here," he exclaimed, pointing at a thick patch of snow. "They're under there. Can you move the snow safely?"

Snowflake would say the two mages had gotten close enough that she felt comfortable and at ease around him, perhaps even to the extent of using each other’s shortened names, ‘Snow’ and ‘Kaz’ for example. As rare as it was, if they were to be in the midst of a battle, she could say that she would trust him to watch out for her back.

”Oh, I was thinking if you could just lift us up with one of your wind spells, but I suppose you’re right, it could make the situation worse.” It seemed that they would have to do the long way of tying a rope to a strong base and climbing up the mountain until they find the survivors. It was a tough procedure, and though the freezing temperatures didn’t bother her, the exercise of climbing up the mountain with a rope seemed rather taxing. Thankfully, her days of endurance training might come in useful for this matter.

It was as though they were rock climbers, making their way up the mountain and whenever she was stable on a rock, Kazimir would tie it another rock until they were already quite far up the structure. The two had split ways to search more coverage since they were already drawing closer to the source of the sounds from the victims. The cold had already dried up her sweat and she was already panting quite profusely until the two were finally drawn into a location where they heard the voices the closest.

A nod responded Kazimir’s statement, confirming before placing her hand onto the thick patch of snow freezing the calculated spot into an ice layer, so that they could claw it out easily rather than digging it up from the snow. The woman released a low grunt as she pulled out the frozen layer of ice and a few heads would pop from within. Admittedly, she was surprised as to their survival, wondering how they could be breathing underneath all that snow. There were two young children and a woman buried together, whom she assumed was their mother.

”Are you alright?” she picked up the children, dropping them safely to the side before extending her hand to the woman. ”How did this happen?”

Kaz nodded as she trusted his plan of scaling the mountain. He hadn't even noted that he called her by a shortened name but she didn't seem to mind. It was nice to have that level of ease with someone. Snowflake was certainly a person he would trust. Even in the seemingly brief time they had known each other, he could tell she was a strong person walking a path to do good for others.

Finally having reached the people in need, Kaz took a much-needed breath. If there was one thing he neglected to train it was endurance. He stole some quick breaths as she cast a spell on the snow that imprisoned the people. He cupped his hands over his mouth and exhaled into them. Breathing some warmth back into them, through the gloves that he wore. Snow seemed unphased by the cold. Ah to be a mage with the power of ice right now.' he thought to himself.

The snow became a frozen layer and Kaz huffed as he helped her heave the sheet out and reveal the family beneath. Kaz wrapped his jacket around the shivering children as Snow lifted the woman out. The mother's eyes filled with joy and fear at the same time. "Thank you thank you thank you," her eyes got wide and her hands clammed up when Snow asked her how this all happened.

"We have to hurry and leave. It'll come back. Please run."

The woman frantically rushed to her children and held onto the rope. Just then the shadowy figure from before oozed back out over the snow. It's body rolled down the snow and rock like a liquid shadow. As it came closer, the snow rumbled and the rocks slide, threatening to create another avalanche.

Kaz stepped forward beside Snowflake, "Alright. How do you want to handle this one?" He asked as the wind gathered around him. it was less destructive than before but was still potent enough to take on this threat.

For a brief moment, she was stunned. The mother seemed relieved and grateful to be rescued, thanking them profusely not only for short span of a few seconds until her expressions became immediately apprehensive, mumbling about how someone or something was going to come back. Confused, she mumbled to herself, her head tilting to the side, ”Wh...What?” Not knowing what to do, she just followed what the woman said, giving Kazimir a rather perplexed look. As they were preparing to climb down the mountain again, they were greeted by the same shadowy figure that they saw earlier at the peak of the mountain.

It was then she realised that the woman was most likely talking about the mysterious figure. With his entrance, also came another disaster—a landslide and an avalanche beginning to tumble down upon them. ”I’ll deal with the avalanche, try to distract him from casting another spell again. I’ll give you back up.” She spoke to her comrade, her hands raising from the sides, charging herself to cast a spell to control the momentum of the falling rocks and snow.

”Stay behind us at a safe distance!” she bellowed over her shoulder to the woman and her children. It was apparent they felt frightened at the sight of chaos before their eyes, not to mention the reappearance of the figure again. They needed to protect them, perhaps she might be able to get some answers later regarding the creature or a person and to why the family was sought after so hungrily. She hadn’t even gotten a good look to differentiate whether it was a human or not, but nonetheless, that was of trivial matters.

The woman released a low grunt as she threw her arms to the side almost as if she was lifting an imaginary force, freezing everything that was in its incoming path. The falling debris instantly ceased at the spot, gradually combining to form giant ice spikes. She’d eventually turn around to face the mysterious person, alongside Kazimir after withdrawing her weapon from its sheath, the eternal flames encasing the blade the instant it was drawn.

"On it," he replied as he stepped out to give her space. He gave a quick look back at the family that huddled together.

Gathering wind around his feet, he held his hands out to his sides and shifted his weight. The avalanche rolled down the mountainside and Kaz stomped his foot on the ground. The wind propelled him into the air and he soared above the rocks and snow. Beneath him, Snowflake had risen her hands. Ice spikes shot up in front of her halting the momentum of the slide.

Kaz smiled at her expert control over her magic. It was always an impressive sight to see. But now his focus went back to the lurking shadow. It moved back and forth erratically as if hunting for a way to keep on the assault.

It shot forward at the wall of spikes. Kaz rushed downward, and roared, sending a blast of air that erupted into a tornado. The attack sent snow and rock flying. Within the debris-storm was the shadowy figure upheaved by the wind. Kaz dashed at the figure and swiped his hand downward creating another tornado. The second attack sent the shadowy figure tumbling from the sky and rolling on the ground closer to Snow.

The shadows bundled up revealing a man beneath the cloth. A ragged and broken form. He shot his hand out. Webs of shadow flung forth at both Kazimir and snow. The wind mage dropped down and shot out a cone of wind blowing away the shadow-like tendrils and leaving an opening for Snow to strike at.

"It's too late. Even if you stop me, my brethren will decimate the other villages." The man hissed as his spells were being thwarted by the wind. He wasn't ready to go down so easily but left an ominous message for the team if he did. The family coward backward, staying behind the wall of ice.

Snowflake had expected the shadowy figure would put up a fight more than she’d expected but it seemed that Kazimir was handling it just fine by himself. The woman raised her head, impressed of his capabilities but the task at hand was yet to be done. Through the harsh gales caused by her mission partner, he had left an opening for her to deal the last strike to their enemy. Gripping her sword tightly in her hand, she raised it to her side, swinging it with most of her energy across her foe’s chest, the flames around the edges of her sword burning his skin even with a single graze. She watched the figure collapse onto the ground, writhing in pain from the flames. It was strange how an ice wizard was wielding a weapon of the element she was inept of.

”What’d you mean too late? What’d you want from this family or the other villagers?” She brought her blade down onto his neck, stopping just a few millimetres away. ”Speak!” She ushered him to force out the words, her blade even closer to his neck now. Now that she had a closer look of the figure, it was indeed a man but how he was able to use that kind of magic—that she didn’t know. ”Who sent you here? Where’s your boss, or whoever’s in charge of this?” Numerous questions spouted from her lips, demanding to be answered whilst her enemy cowered in the snow.

”We—We just want to send a message to the royals, the nobles, for treating us like shit,” he spat. ”We have no food as well, that’s why we’ve been trying to steal resources from the villages.”

”Does that require you to harm innocent lives?” the woman spoke, without a drop of emotion in the tone of her voice. The grimness of her tone almost sounded as if she was raging inside. ”Which village? We’re taking you with us.” Of course they were, but not with his hands and legs free. She tied up his limbs and dragged him through the snow, allowing Kazimir to lead the way since he was better at wayfinding through the woods and mountains than her, or to say the least.

Snow dashed in wielding her flaming blade. A contradiction to the cold ice that she exuded. IT made him wonder why she chose to use such opposing elements or if it was a way to truly find balance with her self. Either way, she swung it with devastating effect. The man fell before her strength and recoiled.

With a sword pointed at his throat, he gave up the motivations of his crew. Snow jumped into action and bound his body. Kaz was ready to escort him but Snow immediately began dragging him through the snow. His body bumping over the rocks with small groans of pain. Kaz simply shrugged and kept walking. The man deserved all the pain he got.

"The..village...is straight.. ow..through the forest. But like I said. It's too late. My companion planted a cursed artifact in the town. it's going to drain the will to live out of all the people."

Kaz whirled his head around. The very thought of something like that made his blood boil. Only amplified by the fearful yet smug look on the man's face. Without a word, he turned to guide them. He walked much faster now, his eyes ever alert not wanting to make the slightest mistake in taking them off course. "This is gonna be bad Snow,"He said, preparing himself for what was to come.

As they arrived at the village a woodsman walked out. His eyes were blank. An ax slung over his shoulder. He moved as if he didn't see them there. The woodsman's shoulder knocking into Kaz but the man didn't flinch. He then bumped into a tree and froze, but only for a moment before stepping backward to move around it. His eyes still nearly void of consciousness.

Kaz glanced over at Snow and shook his head. It saying all the deep regret he felt about what was happening. "We have to hurry." As they entered the village, they could see the people wandering the streets the same as the man. Lifeless husks that moved from place to place without a true destination. Some people laid in the streets on moving and just staring into the sky.

In the center of town was a large building. No doubt the Mayor's house. It was the only place in town that seemed to have two guards in front of the building. They were dressed in well-made plate mail and their eyes were less lifeless than the others but filled with an animal like aggression.

"Sneak in or break in?Kaz whispered.

As Kazimir pointed out, it was indeed bad. A cursed artifact in a small village, as if the villagers would know how to defend themselves against it. The woman heaved out a sigh of frustration as she continued to drag the body through the thick blanket of snow and over the rocks, without a care so much about whether his limb was left behind or not. After all, they needed to be in a rush to save the village.

Not long after, they arrived at their destination only to be greeted by a rather strange phenomenon with villagers walking about the area without any specific aim. She had taken a glance at the man that passed by them and she could see it within their eyes that they appeared to be lifeless as if their soul and emotions have been stripped from their body. Snowflake was void of emotions, but it wasn’t as though she didn’t have a soul, she simply failed to express her emotions.

They would be required to find the artifact and destroy it to cease the effects of the relic. Where would they possibly find it? Hell, they didn’t even know how it looked like. The mayor’s abode seemed to be the first place that came to their minds as the two hastened towards the building, but of course, after binding the man that they had fought earlier to a tree. ”We’re breaking in.” A straightforward person as she was, she didn’t want to sneak around after they’ve already come to this point.

Her steps were soft yet nimble as she quickly walked up to the first guard and struck hard at his neck to render him unconscious. She’d leave the second one to her mission partner before waiting at the front of the entrance door. ”Ready?” She’d wait for Kazimir’s response before lifting up her leg and punting it so hard the door flew open off its hinges.

He gave her a simple glance over his shoulder when she spoke resolutely about her choice. They were going to break in. He nodded and adjusted the cuffs of his jacket sleeves. The mindless people wandered the streets still unaware of what was happening to them and what was about to happen to the town. When she stepped forward, so did he. Both of them moving towards their targets. Even in the brief amount of time they had worked together, they were in tandem.

Kaz walked forward as briskly as a sharp wind. Snow arrived first and struck the guards neck. His body crumbled to the ground. The second guard turned to see his ally down. His hand reached for the baton at his side. Kaz dashed off the ground, rushing towards the man and landing a swift blow to his body and tackling him into the wall. The guard's back cracked against it and a groan escaped his lips with spital speckling on his uniform. Kaz's shoulder was dug deep into his chest and as he stepped back the guard fell to the cold frosty ground at their feet.

"As ever," he replied to her as her foot was high in the air. He conjured wind around himself in preparation for whatever may be within the manor. Her swift kick splintered bits fo the door and sent it crashing to the ground. The hinges swung loose and free, half-torn from their fixture in the doorway.

A rush of wind and snow whipped into the house, scattering across the floor. It whistled in the halls and wooden shudders flapped against the frames that held them in place. Kaz took one step inside. His eyes scanned the room for any threats.

The room was large and had a crystalline chandelier above the center of the room. There were two sets of steps that led to a higher level, overlooking the rest of the manor. The walls were lined with paintings and floor-length windows. Shag rugs covered the floor in various places. nestled beneath the leather furniture. In the center of the room, directly beneath the chandelier was the only thing unconventional about the grande room. There was a large hole in the floor. One that led directly to the lower levels of the house. An eerie purple glow pulsed from the hole.

Before they could truly act, more zombified people scuffled out from doorways. Only this time their attention was on the two of them. One of the zombie-minded men was wearing finely embroidered robes. A mayor that had some extra coin to spend on fashion.

Kaz dashed forward and peered down the hole with the purple light coming from it. Floating in the center was a large crystal. The purple light pulsed from it and filled the room with light. Strings of purple light wafted through the air and wrapped around the people as gentle as a scarf made of mist. As it touched them the scarf would fade from existence. Sitting beneath the crystal was a man in a deep trance.

"We may be able to both launch an attack on it to destroy it,"
he called out to her and then dashed in a semi-circle around the hole. His movement caused the zombified people to stagger back. With a swipe of his hand, he sent a burst of wind to knock the zombified people down. He leaped into the air and took in a deep breath.  He held it in his lungs until the moment Snow was ready. When she launched her spell, Kaz roared and sent a vacuum of air tearing forth and smashing into the crystal along with snow's.

The crystal would shatter and disperse the purple energy, leaving the residents blinking and falling to the ground. Some groaned and others were out cold. The man in the trance roused to awareness but was pouring sweat from intense concentration. Kaz landed and helped the people back to their feet as Snow dealt with the man in the pit.

Once all was done, they would make their way out with two dangerous mages' taken care of. "Another mission down. It's been a pleasure as always Snow."

With that, Kaz moved towards the gate to leave. He stopped seeing the Inn next to him and how close the sunset was. He walked in the Inn and called it a night.

Snowflake

Eternal Winter

As the door flew open lying flat onto the floorboards beneath them, Snowflake hastily scanned the room, her eyes dragging back and forth of the scene as she picked up everything within her sight. She had to admit that the interior was rather grand despite its rustic outer appearance of the building; even having a chandelier located in the center of the ceiling and the walls lined with old paintings and decorations, its glass windows filling up the entire wall all the way up to the ceiling. It almost put her in disbelief that this was merely a village, but seeing how fancy the manor house was, it seemed that her assumptions were wrong. The mayor was living in wealth whilst the rest of the villagers appeared to be having just the most average livelihood, some even less.

That was not the issue nonetheless since they were here to search for the mayor and the culprits who seemed to have kidnapped him. The glow from the hole between the floorboards was impossible not to notice as it attracted the attention of both the Fiore wizards. Just as she entered the building, those people who were in a trance whom she assumed were the guards of the house came pouring out of the doorways. Since they did no harm to them it would be best if were put unconscious so as they don’t hinder their objective.

While Kazimir handled the zombified guards, she brought herself down to the lower level of the building where they had caught sight of the purple crystal. No doubt it was the relic that was putting all the villagers in a trance. As she hastened down to the lower level, the man which she assumed was the leader of the pack – according to the guy she’d bounded earlier – was waiting by the crystal with the mayor tied down to a chair. From the look of the mayor’s face, it was apparent that he was under the spell as well and he would most likely wouldn’t even remember what was going on.

”Let him go.” she spoke, her voice stern and fierce.

”Why should I? With this relic, I can even make this entire village mine and none of them would even know what happened.”

”It’s not yours. Take an abandoned land for yourself, this is occupied with villagers who are innocent.” The woman simply shook her head. There was no point in sharing any other words between the two as it was made obvious of how selfish the man was, despite the property not being his. Before he could open his mouth to speak another word, her legs broke into a dash and in the midst of the action, her hands reached towards her waist and drew her flaming sword from the sheath, its fire immediately bursting alive once it was drawn.

As expected from a bulky man who was merely just muscles, there was some resistance from him. He fought back, parrying some of her attacks but the flames from her blade would whisk him at every thrust she made, finally rendering her foe weak enough to not being able to withstand her attacks. When the man had dropped down onto his knees, she brought her blade close to his neck. ”Acknowledge your defeat. Leave, and never return.” The buffed man simply gulped down, his sweat cascading down his temple as he nodded and quickly fled.

Now, the only that was left was to destroy the purple crystal and everything would return to normal – she hoped. With her blade, she sliced the crystal into half, the item briefly glowing and trembled as she destroyed it, threatening to explode before it shattered into tiny crystal pieces. The villagers thankfully returned back to their usual self though they didn’t retain any memories of anything that happened while they were in a trance. The two were thanked significantly by the villagers and the mayor and soon, the two wizards bid farewell, content with both of their work having completed. ”Pleasure was mine.”
