Having taken a step away from the rune knights for the first time since coming to this land, Kazimir decided it was time to take another job. He couldn’t let his lack of connection with the order stifle his need to work and improve himself. Although things were already changing within him.

Returning to his new temporary place of residence, he barely made it to the door before he noticed a letter partially hanging out of the mailbox. Inside was a request from Inspector Nilan. One that he had started when he was a knight and seemed like it was time to finish it as an inquisitor.

It simply asked for him to meet at his office, so the wind mage turned around before heading home and made his way there. The inspectors office was in a building partially destroyed by the monstrous growth of the plants. It was near the center of town where the tunnels had been dug through by vines. Workers hacked at what remained of the vines that latched around the building. At least enough to get a normal flow of traffic and work again.

Loose vines dangled above the open doorway that was obtuse from the damage. He brushed by the vines in his way and said nothing to the workers. His mind was almost entirely focused on the job at hand. The hallway was dirty from the wind blowing freely through the corridors. Officers rushed by trying to get their work done in the maelstrom that rippled through all the offices.

Papers blew out across the floor mingling with the dirt. The wind mage stepped over the documents and office supplies as he read door labels, from the ones that remained standing. He searched for the name of Nilan, the man that requested his presence. In the distance he heard his familiar voice, “Just lean the door against the frame. I’ll get to it later,” it was frustrated and weary from work.

“That you Nilan?” Kazimir called out from around the corner.

“ah Kazimir, come over here. Just move the door,” Nilan called back. Turning the corner, the door was haphazardly resting on the door frame. Nilan sat sideways at the leaning desk from the the building resting at an angle partially swallowed by the earth.

“Glad that you could make it,” Nilan added, shuffling some papers out of his way. He yanked out a finicky drawer and shoved them inside.

“So what do you have for me,” the ex-knight replied as he pushed the door out of the way with his arm. Nilan grabbed the only remaining documents on the table and explained the new situation. The papers were a mix of eye witness reports and investigators notes. Many of them in connection with the recent plant attacks on the town.

Across from the inspector was a board that had been strung up from the remaining parts of the ceiling. It still swayed back and forth from the meager support that held it up. A large map of the region was pinned to the board. Over it were various snippets from the accounts of people and locations of interests marked. One of them was circled three times over.

“There have been reports of a hooded figure roaming around town,” Nilan pointed at a sketched image pinned to the corner of the board. All though it didn’t provide any more insight above and beyond it being a hooded figure. “I need you to see if you can look into it,” he made eye contact with Kaz, “I think this person may have something to do with the plant growth.”

The assumption made sense to the wind mage. The plants had mysteriously appeared and if this person showed up at the same time then they were likely connected. Although their exact motives were yet to be determined. Kaz crossed the room and stood staring at the map. His eventually fixing on the place circled over and over again.

“So you think he is over here,” Kaz asked, getting right to the point. The inspector could tell there was something different about the mage but then again who was he to guess what the man had been through with the dangers of his job.

“I think he is pulling the strings behind it. We are shorthanded and I need you to bring him in for questioning,” the inspector replied, joining Kaz at the board. They stood taking in all the information before them. Nilan patiently waited for the wind mage to gather whatever he could from the information on the swaying board. The snippets read various statements about the sightings of the man. Many of them claiming he was near the forest.

All the writings pointed towards a generally time frame. It seemed the afternoon is when the person was on the move. It was a pretty narrowed down area of the forest at the outskirts of the town. Hopefully a simple place to get started. “Alright then. I’ll head over there,” Kazimir replied finally and turned to leave. The inspector nodded and went back to his desk, “Good luck out there,” he said knowing that things were getting more complicated now.

The ex-knight was back on the case and left the devastated officers quarters. Pushing past the vines he felt as though he was already in a forest. ‘What was the goal of all these plant eruptions?’ ‘what could the man be after,’ were the main questions on his mind now. The plants had exuded a poison that drained mana. Would that be something he would encounter when he met the hooded man. Surely he couldn’t be a mage but what if he was someone that used them to harvest mana for their own purposes. The more he thought the more dire his conclusions became until he decided to focus on the task. Find the man.

He moved toward the forest outskirts. By the time he arrived it was already becoming afternoon and his wait would only be a few hours at most. He sat a ways off from the location and set up camp. It was a stake out. He needed to conceal his presence to avoid the man getting spooked. There were no reports of any others being seen around here or with him.
