Sweat beads off the Desiertian’s face as he wills his body to continue moving. The sun relentlessly beats down on his body as he continues forward before finally reaching the mountain’s peak. “I made it.” He says breathlessly as he slumps down to the side to catch his breath. During his trip to the Seighart Mountains, he made it a point to run to the mountain’s peak daily. It was a way to hone his skills and to remind him of the trials he went through during his early days as a mercenary. The days that shaped him as a warrior and furthered his aspirations to be the ruler of the world. As he stretches and prepares himself both mentally and physically for the trip down the mountain, he remembers the day that he believes everything changed for him. The day that pushed his body well beyond its limits and forged the man that now stood there.

Xerxes awakens with a start; hacking and coughing in an unbearably humid area. His eyes dart around frantically as he tries to regain his bearings. He was suspended upside-down, his face banged up and bloodied. More disconcertingly, his hair was caked with a layer of sand and debris. Xerxes was trapped in confined space made from walls of twisted metal beams and paneling, and flames lick through small gaps. His breathing was labored as he strained to free himself. After a few agonizing seconds, he finally succeeds in his task, landing face first against the ground. The man rises to his feet and runs his hand through his hair in an attempt to remove some of the debris. As he finishes, he glances at his left hand, which now has smears of blood on it. This only confirms what he already knew, he isn't doing so well though that was an understatement. The wind howls and whistles outside as sand obscures the wreckage in his immediate vicinity. He trudges forward, holding a forearm up near his face to shield himself from the intense wind.

Darya?!”, he calls out seeking his mercenary companion. He repeats these two more times before he finally remembers that she isn't there. It had been a couple of days since that faithful night in which he and Darya were captured during a mission, and she was slain. Since her death, Xerxes had fallen in on rough times. He couldn't operate as efficiently as he was used to. He felt rather, empty. It wasn't so much that he cared about her, just he didn't know what else to do. Ever since he joined the mercenaries, ever since he sought to realize his father’s dream, she was by his side. The yang to his yin, though she wasn't all light and sunshine. Their mission was what should have been a simple assassination. However, things got rough, and they wound up captured. While Darya was killed to make a point, Xerxes was kept alive and tortured for information. ‘Who sent them?’ ‘Who were they after?’ All questions Xerxes refused to answer. The physical and mental toll was high on him, but he managed to endure it. He knew that they would be back shortly, possibly to once again attempt to beat information out of him. He needed to escape wherever this was. After coughing up some blood and finding his discarded spear on the ground, Xerxes lurches on, knee deep in the sand.

Looking ahead, he sees a swinging gate freshly powdered with sand, a sign that a sandstorm had just brushed through and a note that civilization might be close. As he nears, a ghastly roar echoes throughout the area. A frightening sight pierces through the haze. A large creature with a glowing orange face leaps out from the snow, roaring as saliva drips from its maw. Looming towards, Xerxes sees a large hole in the side of its head. The man instantly realizes that his captors have discovered his escape and have sent a welcoming committee to find him. “Damn…the mages must have sent out that accursed summoning magic.” He mutters, remembering how both he and Darya were caught off guard before. He goes to grumble about magic in general but is shaken from his thoughts as the creature moves to attack. An arm lunges towards Xerxes who dodges the initial blow with great difficulty. His body had been pushed to the limit; everything he did now was just running on pure fumes. Struggling to fully maintain his grip on his spear, the man moves forward to deliver a few well-timed slashes with the bladed point of his weapon. After a few strikes, the creature disintegrates into nothingness as Xerxes collapses.

I have to keep moving.” He says as he wills his body up. He did not have the luxury to rest. If that summoned creature was any indication, they were hot on his trail. A bit further through the sand-filled area, Xerxes sees a cavern and decides to take refuge there. Inside, the Desiertian was better shielded from the elements, but he was no safer in there then he was outside. Broken bodies lay strewn everywhere, a showing of the ruthlessness of his captors. As the man approaches, the corpses lurch upright all drawing near him. “The hell kind of magic is this?” Xerxes says in disgust as he wearily prepares himself for another battle. Though imposing in their appearance, the corpses were weak and decomposed as Xerxes’ weakened strikes were enough to finish them. In a little over thirty seconds, all bodies lay in pieces on the ground, Xerxes satisfied for the time being. His satisfaction is short lived as the pieces begin coming together, creating two abominations compiled of assorted parts. “Of course…” he mutters as the creature loom towards him.

The Desiertian sought to end this futile skirmish as quickly as possible as he dives towards the nearest one, chopping off the right leg in one fell swoop. The body crashes to the ground with a sickening thud, a pained roar etching out. Suddenly, four large spidery legs burst from the bottom of the wound, placing the beast upright once more. A swift kick to the side followed by another to the head drops the beast for the moment as he quickly focuses his attention on the other as the former skitters away. With the other, he easily slices off the top portion of its body, thinking that with no head, it cannot operate. The abomination easily proves him wrong by sprouting four tendrils near its now exposed spinal column. This new development is particularly more aggressive than the other as it flails the tendrils around like whip. The tendrils connect against his face as he attempts to dodge them, finally ending the battle by stabbing the creature one more and pouring his energy into it. It falls and disintegrates like the creature outside, leaving Xerxes alone once again...at least for the moment.

The Desiertian makes his way through the cavern, dealing with more and more of these summoned abominations along the way.  His strikes are now more precise and controlled, instead of erratic and wildly like before. The more fluid and precise the attacks are, the less chance he has of these things combining into something more powerful. Although relatively easy at first, in a group, their combined forms posed a big problem. Eventually, Xerxes’ path is blocked by a large metal contraption next to a very long drop down. Xerxes moves to the door of the contraption and peaks into the darkened window. “Can't see a damn thing.”, he mumbles. As he pulls and opens the door, a lifeless body slides out and plunges into the darkness. As he goes to leave, the door shuts and the contraption turns over and begins to slide towards the darkened abyss with a groan, trapping the man inside. Sheathing his weapon and sighing, Xerxes attempts to climb out of the precariously dangling vehicle in a desperate attempt to escape. He inches up slowly and steadily, gripping the seats and whatever else he could get a handhold on. After a few agonizing seconds, all of which felt like minutes, Xerxes slams his shoulder against the door. With a final desperate slam, Xerxes finally knocks it open as he quickly climbs out, seconds before the machine disappears into the void. He scurries onto solid land and takes a few deep breaths of relief. A fleeting safety, if only for the moment, something that didn't seem to come in bulk here.

His body was nearing an overheat and he had a gnawing hunger growing. He knew that he absolutely had to find a way out. With a groan and a wince of pain, Xerxes rises and continues deeper into the cavern. Up ahead, he sees another one of those large contraptions, thankfully not near the end of an abyss. With any luck, all these vehicles meant that some sort of outpost was nearby. With an outpost meant civilization, with civilization meant escape or at least a meal or two. Xerxes continues onward, taking out a few scattered creatures along the way with his bladed spear. After clearing his way through the caverns, he emerges in front of a massive wall. Crude guard towers and spotlights line the structure, which at least meant that it might provide some extra protection. Xerxes makes his way to a door set at the post's base and kicks it down, finally feeling the cool breeze from the inside. As he moves deeper inside the outpost, he sees a lift that could send him upward. Moving the lift, the man rapidly presses the button but is met with a dull silence.

Damn, no power...” Xerxes curses as he slams his fist on the wall next to him. He looks around and finds a breaker box in the corner of a room. “Please give me something good...” he says as he slowly makes his way towards. His body was heavy and felt as if he was wadding through water, but he needed to continue. He had to. Reaching the box, he flips the breaker as the power slowly returns. Lights fill the area as a low hum begins to emanate from the lift. Hoping that things were beginning to improve, Xerxes hastily enters and presses the button. The door slowly closes as the lift ascends upward. Xerxes lets out a deep sigh and closes his eyes, hoping to enjoy these peaceful moments of silence. Unfortunately, a loud thud coming from the top of the lift stirs him from his peace. The thud increases in both sound and frequency before the top is ripped off entirely, revealing a large winged creature. Large talons tightly gripping the sides of the lift as it lowers its beak down and roars. “Fuck…” Xerxes says quietly.

Xerxes was still out of breath as he slowly came to a stop at the base of the mountain. Every inch of his body screamed in agony; his body yearned for water. He stopped at the makeshift camp that he set up before his run and quickly doused himself with water to cool his body down before downing a bottle of the cold, refreshing liquid himself. The pain throughout his body seemed to subside for a fleeting second as he sat down and gazed at the sunset. He had continued his run throughout his trip down memory as he thought fondly of Darya. It had been so long since he visited her grave or even thought of those days. It was a failure on his part. One that he would call the greatest failures of his lifetime. He made a promise that when he returned home, he would visit her.
