Khalfani †

There were so many questions and not enough time to gather the answers, at least not for Khalfani. The Lion Prince felt helpless and in a sense, defeated. The Knights of Duat made their first appearance at the dinner party. Nobles and other wealthy people alike faced their demise as the Knights of Duat entered. An attack of this level could only mean that the person who orchestrated it had some type of a vendetta against them. The Knights weren't known to act without purpose but this felt like a mix between whatever their purpose was and revenge. Khalfani clenched their jaws as they readied themselves for the trip to come. It was the day after the dinner but it wasn't the dinner that made such a night memorable. By now word would have spread from the East to the west and then some. Word of a terrorist attack would get out.

The whispers of the commonfolk alone could potentially create bigger problems. Outside invaders would undoubtedly believe that somehow the kingdom was weaker now. People would grow bolder and bolder with each passing minute. The Pharaoh was of course nowhere to be found. He was probably dealing with bigger things, but the people needed to see him and hear that everything would be fine. Perhaps that's what he expected Khalfani to do. The last time Khalfani had faced an attack on this level it nearly broke them. All they could remember was the faces of those they watched turn to dust. Again, they remembered the fates of the people from yesterday. People were disgusting. All this senseless death and destruction for something that wasn't anywhere close to better. The Earth didn't deserve this type of pain. People were the problem, perhaps all people and Khalfani was starting to see that now.

Do you understand now?

There it was. That voice again! The Prince stopped lacing their boot and sat up straight, looking around to make sure that they were actually alone in their room. Nobody was around them, it was just themselves. "Who are you?" Khal asked aloud calmly. They were frozen I place as they awaited a response. Nothing came through. Not a sound. "Whoever the fuck you are, leave me the hell alone. You do not want to fuck with me right now." Finally finishing up their boot, the Lion slammed their foot onto the ground, pushing themselves off of the bed. They were talking out of their ass. Khal understood that the voice was inside their head, there was virtually nothing they could do to actually shut the voice out even if they wanted to, at least not right now. Now they had to focus on the task.

Lady Nuru was safe and sound, back in the forests where she felt like it was safer. Who could blame her? It was obvious that the Knights were targeting the nobles, they thought. Someone like Nuru was known to be a sacred being in Desierto, it was taboo for anyone to make an attempt on her life, even the Knights of the Duat. Khalfani was frustrated. They were frustrated because they didn't come back to Desierto to fight, they came back to get married. Albeit, getting married wasn't something they wanted to do, they hardly expected anything to go wrong. They would be lying if they said they were prepared. The whole ordeal was annoying, but they would waste no time becoming frustrated by the circumstances presented. Once again the gods had been toying with them. It was confusing. One moment they led the godsblood towards a blessing, the next they acted as if they had laid a curse on them.

Khalfani stood up, put on their cloak, grabbed their shield, and left the villa. The journey ahead would likely be the most annoying part of their visit to Desierto but it was something that needed to be done. If Lady Nuru had been murdered not only would the Pharaoh blame them, but the townsfolk would too. Something like that could be counted as a curse. Such was the fate of being a royal. Everything you did came with a price heftier than any normal mortal. A curse disguised as a privilege and one they they hadn't asked for at that. Without a word Khal left the villa. Four guards trailed behind them but unbeknownst to the guards, there was absolutely no way in hell Khalfani would be traveling by foot. With one step and a tap to their chest they lifted themselves off into the sky, leaving the guards where they stood.

The trip to the kingdom wasn't a long or tedious one. Khalfani's Villa was not too far away from the gates and so they would reach there in no time. When the guards saw them they simply nodded but Khalfani was pissed. Too much had happened the night before for them not to be. Lady Nuru was almost killed and they had lost control. They really weren't in the mood for any of the shenanigans should any present themselves. Today, Khalfani could sentence a man to death just for looking at them weird. They saw about 10 guards stationed in the center just mingling about, patrolling or whatever it was that they did. The Dragon Slayer stopped and looked at them. They glared at their armor, their faces, scrolling up and down to make sure they were fit for the journey that was to come. It would be a long one, so the guards needed to be efficient.

"You all are coming with me. I'm sure you heard about the attack yesterday. Someone needs to get to the bottom of this, and fast." The guards all looked at each other. They probably felt like they weren't prepared but it didn't matter in the end. The prince gave them a direct order. "This won't be a problem, right?" Khalfani asked. There was a hint of annoyance in their voice, a tone that the guards would realize they should adhere to. The group shook their head. "Good. Follow me." Khalfani said blatantly as they turned and walked towards the direction from which they came. The gate was always open for the whole Desierto to enter the kingdom. Really, it was far too generous. Khalfani approached the gates but before going through them they looked up at the guards. For some reason they just wanted to smite all of these guards.

"If the King, Lady Nuru, or Lord Yuurei end up looking for me, tell them I'll be back." Khalfani said before leaving with the guards. "Oh, and don't you think it'd be wise for you to close the gates? The Knights of Duat are on the loose." They said. As they left the Kingdom they heard the gates close and there was that. Now the journey through the desert of death began. Everyone knew that this desert was unfriendly to the weak or people who couldn't improvise. Every day hundreds of people were scorched alive by the murderous heat of the Desert. There wasn't any water in the desert unless you were lucky enough to come across a small Oasis, a cactus or rain, and all three were unlikely to appear. Khalfani was certain that they would survive though. They couldn't exactly say the same about their companions. As always, they prepared for the worst.

They began by looking for anything that screamed "Knights of Duat" as they trekked through the sand. The heat was blazing, already cooking them alive, and it had only been thirty minutes. No clues or anything had been spotted at first. It almost seemed like a dead mission. Khalfani wouldn't lose hope though. They turned every so often to check on their fellow hunters, stopping for water breaks. It was then, as they sat in the sand that Khalfani spotted a piece of cloth. Quickly they closed their canteen and crawled toward the piece of polyester before the wind would carry it away. "Hm? What's this?" They asked the gods before grabbing it and putting the cloth to their nose. They sniffed all around it, trying to figure out if the scent was familiar. Luckily enough, the scent was indeed familiar. It was a scent they had picked up at the dinner party last night. This could only mean one thing. The Prince crumbled the cloth and sniffed around trying to see if they could track the scent.

Their nose was picking up a trail, as if the Knights had made their way "This way." The commander pointed to the left, leading the guards further through the sand. As time went on, the sun was finding its way into a slumber. Slowly Ra began to fade from the sky, allowing the moon to rise and become one with the earth again. It was sunset now, but soon the goddess of the moon would be peering down on the mortal below, deciding whether or not she should bless or curse the people who worshiped her. One by by the men had met their demise and soon the numbers were down to thirty. It never got easier to see a comrade die, although Khalfani had learned to deal with the pain. It was just another day for them. They had been cursed to see their people die ever since the titan attack back in Seighart, but it was the way of life. As they traversed the scorching deserts of Desierto they came across a man nearly dying in the sand. He was parched, dying of thirst. His skin was burnt by the sun and it looked like at any given moment he would become one with the universe.

Commoners didn't get a tomb or a posse who would die for them or with them. They died with nothing more often then not. Khalfani stopped and kneeled beside the man. The guards stopped too, waiting to see what their lord would do. "Poor thing." Khalfani simply said before passing the man the canteen they had carried with them. The Man seemed surprise to see a Royal approach them with an offering but wasted no time in drinking the water. Khalfani smiled warmly before asking the man if he had seen anybody strange pass him. Thank goodness he did. The Man explained that last night as he was finding his way back to the kingdom he saw a group of hooded figures walk past him. He hid because he had a feeling that these hooded figures were definitely up to no good, but he knew the direction that they were going in. The man nodded before pointing forward and Khalfani nodded. They were going the right way after all.

With nothing else to say to the man, the Prince stood and sighed. "Thank you. You said you were going back to the Kingdom, correct?" Khalfani asked the man. Still on the ground, catching his breath and now feeling a lot more rejuvenated, he nodded. "Yes, I was going to see my grandchildren. I did not have the money for a proper trip, your highness. I nearly died." The Lion turned to one of their guards on the left then turned to another guard on the right. They wanted to do something good while they still could. Everyday the voice they heard in their head grew stronger and before they became a completely evil entity perhaps it was best to rack up on good deeds. Maat waited in the after life with her scale in hand and when she would weigh Khalfani's heart, hopefully she would see that he was worthy of entering the garden. "You three, escort this beautiful man back to the kingdom please and when he gets there and see to it that he and his family are treated as royal guests." Khalfani said. The man stood and walked off with the guards, happily of course. The group of Desiertans continued on until they finally reached the three large buildings that would serve as the temple of Duat. Two were blocked off by sand but the other one was open. There it was...
