The towns of Oak and Baska were admittedly neither of Atani's favorite towns if she was being honest, but she had to admit that they weren't necessarily as bad as others made it out to be. These 'others' consisted of people she knew well like Zane who harshly warned her of Baska's pubs and people she didn't know well who likely echoed rumors they heard without visiting the towns themselves, the latter of which applied mostly to Oak. Granted, it was indeed home to Eternal Nightmare, but that was hardly a reason for people to treat it with nearly as much superstition as they did Dahlia.

Well... she did suppose that not everyone actually knew those in Eternal Nightmare like Atani did. Despite being in a 'dark guild,' Zane wasn't a bad person. Even the guildmaster himself, Odin the Lich, helped out in the efforts against a potential tyrant ruler.

And it wasn't even a tyrant ruler who threatened Fiore directly. The crazed woman who was insanely devout to Illumin wanted to seize Bosco's throne. Brunhilde the 'Divine,' as if she even deserved such a title for the atrocities she committed. That hellish woman wanted to erase any trace of religion that was not explicitly Illuminian or a branch thereof. This included Atani's own religion, her belief in the Elven Pantheon-- the main religion elves such as herself believed in. The genocidal maniac wanted to kill anyone who got in her way. Atani had seen so much elven blood shed... far more than she ever thought to witness in a hundred lifetimes. All of that bloodshed, and none of it was something she witnessed firsthand at the hands of Odin. She saw the lich do the exact opposite. He was there standing side-by-side with her fellow Wood Elves and demihumans.

He was there standing side-by-side with them to reconstruct their damaged homes-- No, damaged was too kind of a word. They were destroyed. Decimated by Brunhilde the Divine and her equally crazed followers. It made no sense to Atani how someone could see all the harm that Brunhilde caused, or partake in it themselves, and deem it okay simply because it was all in the name of Illumin.

The most frightening part of it all was how close the fanatics truly came to placing Brunhilde the Divine on the throne. Not even Cassia the Dauntless (who in Atani's opinion was the second best choice beside Hildegard), as level-headed and politically sound as she was, could garner as much support as her comparatively less level-headed sister did. It was as if half Bosco's human population didn't have a brain. What did they think would happen if she succeeded in her conquest?

She would ruthlessly destroy every evidence of anything that contested the Illuminian religion. The zealot followers of Illumin who resided in Bosco would prosper in the short run, but then what? Conquer Stella and force them to convert to Illuminian as well? As seen of the Stellan refugees, Bosco had the superior army. Reiner too thought that claiming even more land from Stella would be possible. So what would happen after Stella was conquered? Would they turn to Fiore? Seven? Iceberg? Brunhilde didn't exactly strike Atani as a person to hold back, so why wouldn't she try and plunge Bosco into a continental war in the name of her god? That sort of thing would bring a country to economic ruins. The same people who praised Brun would go into poverty and starve.

Thank the gods that didn't happen. Atani prayed to the deities she believed in, and guess what?

Brunhilde didn't take the throne. In fact, her younger half-elf sister, Hildegard the Beastmaster, seized the throne. All odds were stacked against the young princess. She had the least amount of time to make herself known. Reiner was destroying the forest for resources. Brunhilde was slaying Hildegard's most faithful followers. Hilde's affiliation with the public's least favorite sibling (Wilhelm the Conqueror) left a bad taste in peoples' mouths. But despite it all, she rose to the top. The one Sachsenwald who wanted equality for all succeeded... and she had the help of Eternal Nightmare's guildmaster.

Atani wondered how many people knew of that. She knew the guild was rather secretive for the most part. That was part of the reason why Zane elected to keep word of his membership from her. You kind of had to be if you were in an illegal guild she supposed, but in any case…

She would still have been surprised if those in Oak Town at the very least didn't hear of the guildmaster's doings in Bosco. Though it wouldn't seem like civil conflict largely contained to just Bosco itself would be a hot topic in Fiore, many of its citizens went across borders to aid in the neighboring country's conflicts. Because at the end of the day, whoever seized the throne would alter the diplomatic relationship between Fiore and Bosco in one way or another.

But still... it wasn't exactly Fiore's war. Atani felt like she had to do what she could do to help the Wood Elves who were in danger. Although they were regionally in Bosco, Wood Elves didn't like to affiliate with a specific country. They were not people of land belonging to men, but were people of land belonging to nature. Their home was being threatened, and to Atani it was her home as well.

She couldn't speak for the others of course, but that was why she felt she had a duty to go to Bosco. She couldn't just let her own kind die at the hands of a racist oppressor, nor could she let any more nature be lost to the hands of a greedy prince. Ultimately, there wasn't much she as a single person could do in the grand scheme of things. There were some victories, but there were also heavy losses, and those were what haunted the elf the most.

Though some time had passed since her time in Bosco, it was hard to shake the events from her mind. She still got nightmares of it from time to time, a painful reminder of what horrific things she saw and what horrific things she did. She hadn't talked to anyone about them, not even Lee or Manzo. Certainly not Zane either.

She was told that it was bad to keep things bottled up inside, but she didn't see any alternatives, not for the time being at least. There were things she had to do before she was ready to share what had happened, all of which she wished to do alone. As often as Lee said she was there for her whenever she needed it, Atani couldn't put the burden of her magic on her guildmaster. On one of her closest friends. Atani only told LeeAnn what she needed to hear. Any more, and Atani was afraid that she would put her in harm's way.

She couldn't risk that.

In the meantime, the best she could do was control her... urges. Jobs, she found, were good ways to do that. It often took her mind off the whole spirit amnesia thing. It channelled her frustration and negative energy into positive outcomes.

The effects of doing this sort of thing Atani felt twofold whenever her jobs took place around nature. Though the sandy beaches were a far cry from the lush forests she grew up in, it was still better than dense cities such as Era and Crocus, or slightly more suburban areas like Oak Town and Magnolia. Though the new terrain did take some getting used to, Atani found that the sea provided a rather stimulating challenge. It was fun to test the waters so to speak and try her hand at dealing with not just land animals, but sea animals. Though her time by the water paled in comparison to her time spent in the forest, the elf could not just see the vast differences in behavior, but she was able to draw connections to what she knew to be true of land dwellers as well-- being able to talk to them helped, of course.

Yes, it was a rare ability she possessed. One that was rare even among Wood Elves such as herself. It was a useful skill though. It unfortunately failed when it came to mystical beasts whose magic likely messed with this strange ability she had, but to be able to talk to (for the lack of a better term) more simplistic animals had its advantages. And yes, it even worked on undersea creatures.

At the moment, Atani was on a job. Once again, the local fishermen were complaining about a sudden decrease in their catch rate. It hadn't dropped so low as to significantly impact their earnings, but it was low enough that they knew where it was headed and thus asked for some sort of mage or adventurer to look into it. These fishermen knew the sea, and they knew when something was of natural causes and when something was not.

Of course, needless to say, they were suspecting the latter. There were no sudden changes of weather that would disrupt travel or breeding patterns. There were no pollution leakages killing off fish. Whatever this cause was, it was unnatural. Either an invasive species like the one Atani encountered before, or some sort of magical mayhem that needed to be sorted out. So, just as before, Atani set out to investigate the waters in hopes of finding a lead.

There was no physical evidence that she could see-- or if there was, it was simply something that she had overlooked, perhaps because her eye was not yet trained for finding disturbances in the local marine life besides the obvious. Who better to ask about disappearing fish though besides fish themselves?

Atani was sure that she would come across as crazy if anyone asked her how she found out about the disappearances.

But lo and behold, not only were her marine animal speaking methods nothing short of the truth, but they were effective as well. She didn't know why she hadn't thought of this before. It made things so much easier when it came to this sort of investigative work.

In short, there was yet again another sea creature causing problems in the waters. This however was not an invasive species like the one Atani had dealt with some time ago. It was one that had just sort of... snapped. Atani didn't know that sea creatures could have drama, but apparently they did. Whatever happened between this creature and the specific species of fish that were being hunted, it wasn't pretty. It resulted in a creature who the ecosystem knew to be mentally unstable to lash out and start killing a species of fish that were usually plentiful in the town's waters.

The others in the ecosystem feared that the sea creature would not slow down in his kills and that he wouldn't stop until all this species of fish were murdered. The sad part was, no one was willing to stand up to him. Really, the sharks were the only ones who could stand a chance but they couldn't care less about whatever feud was going on. They didn't even like to feast on the fish that this sea creature was hunting down mercilessly. So, Atani supposed that just left her as the sole person who could deal with this problem once and for all.

With the help of the marine animals, she tracked down the sea creature. At the present moment, he was not on a frenzied eating spree. Though he was far from calm, at least he wasn't murderous. If Atani had any luck, she would be able to reason with him.

Atani could see why no one wanted to stand up to this creature. As with many who had magic running through their veins, this creature would be far more adept at fighting than a shark. The only thing a shark had on him was size, but size didn't mean everything. Another thing that came with magical creatures was advanced intelligence. As luck would have it, this conveniently meant she could communicate with the creature in Fiore's common tongue.

Surprisingly enough, the talk went well. She felt like some sort of fish counselor the entire time, but she was able to talk the creature through its... issues. That psychotic break he had seemed temporary in her total unprofessional opinion when it came to the psychology of magical marine creatures. She gave the creature some special seaweed she knew had calming properties and showed him where it grew. He agreed to try and frequent it. With the problem solved, Atani collected her reward.
