It has been a few weeks since Snowflake had heard the rumours about a cursed child in the streets of Era. The previous quest she had been on, alongside a rather crazy girl called Yumi, allowed her to gain some information about the child. The young woman read through the lines written on a torn piece of parchment paper with black ink, before folding it neatly over its valleys and sliding it inside her cloak pocket. It was hardly any information to be honest; not the details of her magic, not her appearance or her capabilities, but just the location of the child. She shrugged – it was a good enough information for a starter, but she’d have to be cautious since she wasn’t fully informed of whether the child was stronger than her or not.

A sigh passed her lips as she pushed her legs forward, into the dense crowds that littered the streets of the town. Despite being in the middle of the winter season, the streets were as populated just as if it were spring or summer. It certainly brought joy to the city, but not to her, for she loathed being swamped by people and she had never been good with crowds. As she wandered, the hood of her cloak concealed her face, only showing the lower part of her visage. Having a high reputation, traversing through the city has become twice more difficult than usual if she wasn’t cloaked up, seeing how people would flock around her and call out her name, sometimes even grabbing the corners of her outfit which made her extremely uncomfortable.

Fortunately, this was one of the few days where she was able to slip off without anyone knowing. After many minutes of walking over the concrete roads and pebbled ground, she was finally near the outskirts of the city.

The woman looked around, holding her newly attained blade close to her side whilst she took in her surroundings. An abandoned orphanage, I’d have to ask around.” And so, she did. The unusual thing was that whenever she asked around, the townsfolk always seemed to be on edge, hesitant to share the information which only made her so curious. Nevertheless, it didn’t take her long enough until she discovered the building. Just as she was told, the building was literally abandoned: old and ruined, the wooden slabs on the verge of collapsing. The hunter didn’t bother knocking the door, since it was already unlocked and boy, the interior was even worse.

The building looked as if had been brought out from a graveyard, rats and cockroaches crawling everywhere and cobbed webs clung onto the corner of the walls. It was disgusting, no doubt and she had to hold in her urge to vomit from the sight. The wallpapers have already fallen off from decay and the floorboards creaked heavily every time she took a step, that she to worry whether or not she was going to plummet down under the building. There was lots of broken furniture, even drops of dried blood that indicated that the children did put up a fight going up against the enemy.

It was silent, as if no one occupied the house, until she climbed up the stairs, leading herself to a door that was slightly ajar. Without seeking any permission, she pushed it open only to see a child sitting on a chair in an empty room with her back facing towards her. ”Hello?” she attempted to start some kind of small talk to see that if the child would respond. Nothing. The child barely even moved a millimetre. ”I’d like to talk to you, is that possible?” she tried again, and this time the child turned around to face her, so slowly that when their eyes met, she was almost speechless.

The child was possessed, her eyes pitch black as if it was soulless. For a few seconds, the frost mage stood there, staring at her eyes as dark and endless like an abyss until she recollected her posture. She would have preferred not to do the hard way, which was fighting her and forcing her to come with her, but it was deemed useless when the enemy didn’t hesitate to lunge at her from the chair. Thankfully, she reacted in time just to knock her to the side using the hilt of her sword. Her sword was still sheathed, for she knew that if she pulled it out of the scabbard, the flames would engulf the area and the child would be killed from the eternal flames. She just hoped she wouldn’t have to choose that option.

The child was hardly a human, she walked on all fours and her nails had grown long and durable, almost like an animal. ”Look, we can solve this a better way, I just want to talk.” She tried negotiating with the possessed child, as if it was going to do anything. It was then she knew she would have to take her by force. The child limped back onto her two legs, her body wobbling as she stood and shot out a beam of darkness from her palm. Oh, so she wields darkness magic, she thought. Snowflake only had to tilt her head slightly to dodge the spell. She was getting impatient, tired of this unnecessary game and decided to take her down at that instant. She pushed herself forward, her feet kicking up a puff of dust and the enemy got down on all fours galloping towards her. In the midst of it, she tossed another spell of darkness magic at Snowflake, in which she quickly parried it with the scabbard of her weapon, her left hand raising till she brought it against the side of her neck to knock her out.

She heaved out an exasperated sigh, before lifting the unconscious child and placing it inside a large bag. Perhaps it might look slightly suspicious to the eyes of those around the place, but they spoke of no word as she held the duffel bag in her arms and returned to Gaud to inform of the completion of his request.
