Not a bad castle, I wonder how it compares to the palace of Valerica Looking up at the towering structure that stood at the centre of Orchidia’s most affluent portion, Sofia Serana could not help but find a piece of personal curiosity about what grandeur lay within it, even if today was not the day for discovering such things. A girl who had learned how to easily lead a life with little more than the clothes on her back and whatever she chose to carry, the luxury that she was born into still remained just a little bit ingrained within her as she waited, wearing a nice woolly hat to protect herself from the chill in the air which had been loaned from the Cherry collection.
There was probably a time when I could have easily found a way to get a visit, but I suppose that’s behind me… Perhaps in some ways longing for a little taste that reminded her of her home, it would be nice at some point to see the waiting rooms and audience chamber of whatever family owned this colossal example of power and extravagance, even if it wasn’t today.

But that’s not my worry today, today is about… My mortal soul, I suppose?
Turning her eye away from the grand design of today and instead focusing on more humble desires, while she was staying currently with a fuchsia cutie who had been generous enough to lend her a spare room and bedding and even gone as far to try and pay her way for her, Sofia had denied it. Not wanting to feel like she was overly dependent on the wealthy young woman whom she had befriended more for how adorable she found her than the amount of allowance she received, the blue beauty wanted to at least earn enough money to pay her own way and maybe even pay for a little treat for the girl who hosted her as a gesture of thanks. And that meant a little work, though how hard it would be would probably depend on the ‘partner’ she would be working with today.

Sins and Satan, maybe I should have sought a preacher before today~? Pulling the request she had gotten for the job from her pocket and looking over it and the modest sum she would receive for her work again, Miss Serena smirked as the info on the piece of parchment she carried reminded her of the brief she had been by the scarred and smiling older man in regard to her assignment today.

Though I suppose on way to distract him might be to share a few of my recent rounds of debauchery? It might get tiresome to tolerate the response to that for a while though… Finding no shortage of irony in the fact that she was supposed to be spending her day with a zealous fanatic who liked to espouse things like virtue and vice, the little vixen expected she might have to play up her little ‘good girl’ act in order to get along with the character who had been sketched on her piece of paper. Indulgent of her desires to a degree that some found to be a little excessive, no doubt she would be in for a rather stern round of judgement and reproach if this speaker knew who she really was, and given how she loathed such narrow minds, for the sake of her work it was better to paint herself a little sweeter.

“…Look at you all, living as if your vice and ignorance isn’t the reason that evil is on the rise!
Darkness is fuelled by the desires of those who lack discipline and enabled by those to slovenly to stand up to it!
Can you not feel the tides of turmoil turning against humanity?
Satan’s claw is tightening around the land of Fiore, you only need look to find the signs!”

Looks like that’s my cue… Hearing her target before she saw him, as an almost clawing and raspy voice broke through the crowd quite literally, Sofia found herself confronted by someone she did not expect. Certainly anticipating an old man and his appearance roughly matching that of the spot of artistry that had captured his image, in all honesty the blue haired beauty felt a little sympathy for this soul the second she saw him. Sat in a wheelchair and certainly looking like he cared more for pointing out the faults in others than he did taking care of himself, while he appeared spirited enough the young woman couldn’t help but feel pity for this person.

“Would you be Mr Leis?” Not knowing that much about him but the looks of him telling her that he’d certainly seen his share of hardship, it seemed a little cruel to lie to such a person but that was the job, she supposed, and so she dove into her little routine with a hint of reluctance. Slipping through the crowd and making sure she blocked the path of the preacher before he reached the castle, with a pang of guilt sounding out through her heart Miss Serena stepped forward and smiled as gently as she could, slipping down onto one knee in front of the fellow in order to look into his eyes.

“Oh? That’s right, who might be asking there?”

“My name is Sofia and I am a visitor to Fiore… I seek you out because…” Spying surprise in the eyes of the old man, perhaps because he wasn’t exactly used to people treating with anything more than contempt, Sofia steeled her resolve and got into the little character she had thought up while waiting for this soul.
“Coming from a great and devout nation, I too feel the pull of evil in this land, but without guidance I fear I might succumb to its wicked lure…” Drawing from her own experience and perhaps using a little bit of paint to colour herself as some, like her father, thought she should have been, the little vixen added a little misdirection into her introduction in order to hopefully help her cause.

“…And I had heard from others who had struggled you could set me on the true path, the righteous path… Won’t you help me?”
Reasoning that no fanatic of salvation would be able to resist the call of someone who was feeling their faith being tested by a new experience, especially when she was a distressing damsel at that, though it was naughty of Miss Serena to play on that protective desire it also felt that surest method toward success. Sometimes it was better to work smart than hard, after all.

“Ah, you have done well to seek me out, Miss Sofia…
Many fail to heed my warnings but you truly must have the holy spirit to offer yourself up to my teachings.
Come, let me tell you what I have learned of this land and the evil’s that stalk it, so as to protect yourself and spread the good word a little further perhaps?”

That shot that she had taken seeming to be right on the mark, after stroking his chin and toying with the bushy moustache above it, Leis seemed to accept the girl for what she said she was and nodded in assent. It feeling a little sweet in a way, though she was lying to him the man’s quick acceptance of her story and motivation was a little humbling, like he would rather believe in the idea of saving a wayward soul than the concept of being duped. Unfortunately, that observation also only made Sofia feel that bit ashamed for her duplicity, which was odd for a maker of mischief like she was.

I think his heart is probably in the right place, even if he is a bit… Off? Reasoning to her that even if she was being deceptive with the man in order to achieve her own ends, perhaps he might like actually having someone listen to what he said for the day after all, since she couldn’t help but sense a little loneliness about his image. Maybe she was just trying to soothe her guilt, but also there had to be a possibility that this afternoon could help both of them, couldn’t there? At least, that was the reassurance she tried to give herself at least.

“You are too kind, Mr Leis… And I almost feel guilty for asking even more of you but… Would it be possible if we headed somewhere with a little more privacy?” Part one of her little plan complete without a hitch, now that she had the interest and attention of her target the tricky but essential part of the request needed to be achieved. Her foremost purpose here to escort the preacher away from his usual roost and prevent him crowing away and spoiling the experience of some visiting dignitaries from some land or another, in a way it was better for Miss Serena to be out of the way as well. She didn’t want to be spotted by someone she might know after all, that was the last thing that someone who was in one way or another on the run would enjoy, and while it seemed unlikely that would be the case it was better safe than sorry. The pair of them needed to be out of the way before the visitors arrived, both for the sake of the task and the blue beauty’s anonymity.

“With the crowds and guards around, the distractions, I would feel very ill at ease to receive your guidance here, amongst these decadent and disgraceful souls? Would it be possible to head to somewhere quieter where I could fully focus on the wisdom you have to impart?” Using her best and most creative interpretation of the environment in order to facilitate this outcome, while her words drew a funny look from one of two passers-by and she certainly wasn’t proud of them, they did at least seem to fulfil the purpose they were designed with. Leis contemplating the issues she had raised before nodding in approval, Sofia counted the opening act of her job as complete, and now only had to see if she could endure what was to follow…

“…Tainted from the milk of a succubus breast in truth, that is where the fiery character comes from, that is why men fall foul of the trappings of ale more easily than women. However, it is better not to test your own tolerance my dear, a noble soul would only drink the blessed wine offered at communion…”

“Ah, yes, how true…” The back streets of Orchidia having their own charms, with the old man in front of her in his chair and Sofia pushing him along, she found herself none too perturbed by the odd opinions and supposed facts he possessed as they passed through alleyways.
“Quite right indeed…” Used to paying lip service to folk because of the lectures she had received from tutors, staff and even her father and brother on occasions as she grew up because of her mischievous ways, the blue haired girl had learned to largely tune out the exact words she heard in conversations that didn’t interest her and respond with statements peppered with enough vagueness that could fit all kinds of things without arousing too much suspicion that she wasn’t really paying attention.

Air feels a little less brisk today, are we heading toward spring? Eyes of Miss Serena scanning the sky as she trawled along at a slow pace, though by this stage she had become a little bit bored of what was going on and the occasional tastes that she gained of Leis supposed ‘wisdom’ only making her want to seek the comforts she found in the sins he spoke of the girl soldiered on and tried to distract herself as best she could. Looking in the windows of the boutiques and businesses as she moved and feeling an especially strong pull as they passed the odd public house, there seemed nothing quite like the admonishment of alcohol to make one feel thirsty, that was for sure.

“…You know, it speaks a lot of the torrid state of affairs that this country is in that you’re the first soul to listen to my words so intently in quite a long time?
Most just walk past and think I don’t notice the way they pretend they don’t see me?”

A period of silence that Sofia had hardly even noticed seeming to be broken by something that seemed a little more personal, with a tone from the man that seemed a little softer and less imposing than the sermon he had been giving to her, Leis caught the attention of the girl again with his more pensive approach.

“That seems a shame, you have much experience and insight to offer?” Unsure of whether her response had come from the little character she had concocted for the occasion or her own feelings, as the man spoke in a gentler and more intimate tone, so did the girl who pushed him along the streets. The guilt that she had felt earlier on also seeming to flood her and make the sense of pity she felt for this fellow only intensify, she couldn’t imagine what it would be like to spend every day spreading words and ideals no one wanted to listen to. So used to stealing the attention of others who interested her as she chose, it felt like it would take a steely resolve to do such a thing, one that the young woman wasn’t sure she would ever possess…

“I had always thought so…
My whole life all I wanted to do was help people, protect them from the evils…
The evils that lurk around…”

The sense of sadness in the voice of her companion seeming to intensify once he had been eased out of his more fanatical followings and his mind able to process things other than his paranoia and half-baked ideas for conspiracies, as Miss Serana listened on she felt her heart strings being tugged at, gently at first but then more prominently as he continued.

“To make it a safe place for my Betty, she was such a sweet woman, a good one too for putting up with me…”

The words with which Leis was speaking seeming to be so bittersweet, the emphasis seemed to definitely be on the bitter part in that equation. Certainly trying to sound like he was remembering the good times he had with this woman but like any loss them seeming to be tainted by the fact that they wouldn’t come around again.

“At least she’s gone onto a better place, hasn’t she?
Yes… It wasn’t how I wanted to protect her but at least the evils can’t get to her where she is now…”

Sofia silent as he spoke as she did not feel like she had the right to say anything to him on the subject, as she pushed him along in a sober fashion and felt her eyes stung, the girl could only think of her mother in the moment.
What if… While I’m away, she finally… Mind filled with the image of the frail but kind and encouraging woman who had always made her feel so special when she was younger, little droplets of sadness began to bloom in the corners of her eyes of the enchantress as the conversation made her contemplate the mortality of her own closest loved one.

“Yes, I’m sure that somewhere… She’s watching over you, and I bet she’s very proud of you.” The situation she had grown up in a tenuous one, it had felt as if any day she might have woken up to find herself without her favourite parent, and for the large part she had learned to cope with that. Being away seemed different though, and while she had been encouraged onto this journey she was taking by her mother at the same time Miss Serena harboured a secret guilt about their parting. It was what she needed, of course, the woman had been right about that but there were times when that didn’t make it any easier.

“And when you eventually find her again, she’ll tell you that, and you’ll feel like you did all those years again?”  After all, what if she never got the chance to tell her mama that she loved her? What if she never got to wrap her arms around the woman and feel the way that those gentle arms made her feel so safe? Sometimes all she wanted to do was grab Cherry and her other new friends and drag them home, even if she knew that returning would be so much trouble. She wanted to see her mother giggle as she made her cute friend blush and told her of the places she had seen. She’d never done that actually. Never brought a real friend home to her mother, and shared someone like that with her beloved and beautiful parent, and that felt like such a shame. If she met someone, someone special then she would have to do that, no matter what trouble it might bring to her…

“Ah, this is the one my dear…
Thank you for bringing me all the way, it was a true reflection of the goodness in your heart?”

The image of their lost loves ones sobering the pair and making the older one of the two feel his work for the day was complete, as Sofia pushed that small and light figure on the chair up the cobbled steps to a run-down home well off the beaten track, she found that the idea getting him home safely made her feel a little bit better about her day.

“Of course, it was an hon- No, a pleasure to offer you a little aid of mine, given how much you have done the reverse today?” The girl of course still feeling rather guilty for deceiving her companion with who she was and why she had started speaking to him, all the same she had found that beyond the crackpot preaching her day hadn’t been half as bad as she might have expected it being. A little refreshed by the chance to think about her own woes and experience the love another person felt for someone, a feeling she felt she shared in her way, it had felt a benefit to share the company of this man even if it wasn’t in the manner she had asked for. No more enlightened in the battle between good and evil than she had been when she woke up but perhaps learning to treasure what was important to her that bit more, the blue beauty felt a little happier and a little wiser for her day all the same.

“Love, and kindness. That’s the key, young one.
Regardless of what evil tries to prey on you or the missteps you might make, as long as you keep those in your heart, you will never become truly lost.
Keep yourself safe, Sofia Serena!”

Then just as she thought that Leis had nothing else to offer her, a humbler little ounce of insight seeming to leave his lips, as the so called village idiot took over control of the wheelchair Sofia was left a little bit stunned by what he said as he waved her away. Shouting all that nonsense about satanic sin and the odd and overblown ways that evil was supposed to be spread, there seemed far more to the humble little message that the man left the visitor in his departure than what he probably spent the whole of another day crowing about.

“A-And you, Mr Leis! Keep making your Betty a proud woman!” A simple sentiment to be sure but one that given their day seemed especially strong, with a small smile Miss Serena made a mental note to remember at least that piece of his wisdom for the next time things seemed hard or cruel, then waved her companion off. Watching after the odd little man in the wheelchair and as the wind seemed to whip at her long blue locks until he disappeared into his little home before checking her watch, with her task for the day completed the girl let out a sigh of relief and then turned her attention toward the castle she had left earlier in the day. She had done what was asked of her and therefore was due a little reward from it, which she hoped to spend as soon as she could on a treat for the treasure she had already found in Orchidia…

“I’m impressed you managed to keep him busy for the whole day… Though I suppose a pretty girl like you has no trouble wrapping simple men around their finger? Even crazy old coots like that, bwahahahahaaha!”

An envelope filled with her reward money passed along by a man whose lone eye seemed all too keen to explore the prettiness that he saw, having returned to the guard house to collect her reward, Sofia couldn’t help but feel she would much rather spend any day with a sweet nut like Leis than the sleazy fellow who stood before her. Apparently having found his way to the position of captain of the guards for that impressive looking castle, while the scar he wore gave the implication of some rugged veteran, even a girl as young as this could tell there was something fishy about this fellow. A bit too loud and eager to give others work for her liking, having known other people of this station growing up, he seemed to be lacking that invisible sense of command she was used to and seemed, for lack of a better term, all bark and no bite.

“It wasn’t so bad, among the moustachioed men of this town, Leis actually seems like one of the more tolerable candidates to spend a day with?” There just something about this Jelies Sov that seemed to make Miss Serena feel there was something off about him, even as she took the money that was offered to her, she couldn’t but toss a playful little barb at him as she did so. Feeling sorry for the old man and in a way wanting to defend his honour, so to speak, the blue girl couldn’t help but wonder if this captain would have the same strength of character that Leis showed every day. Sure he was an oddball, but he was firm in his beliefs and knew how to prioritize them, and even from a wheelchair seemed more of a man than a knight captain who looked like he was trying far too hard to look big and strong than actually be that.

“Oh, well if you like having a good time with moustached men, I’d be more than happy to show you a good time? What say we meet up this evening for a drink~?”

The so called commanding figure in front of her at least demonstrating he was thick skinned or dense enough to let her first little comment wash off his back, with another leering gaze that made Sofia want to shiver he seemed to affirm an interest in an upfront but entirely artless manner that the visitor would have never contemplated in more than a million years. At times not entirely adverse to the idea of becoming entangled with a gentleman of an older inclination but this creep making her skin crawl, almost as if to torture the fellow the blue beauty held her tongue for several seconds so as to prolong his waiting before finally giving a choice response.

“Oh, well as tempting a proposition as that sounds, I’m afraid that having spent my day learning about the evils of alcohol and the wicked intentions of men, I’ll just have to refuse~ I’m worried about my immortal soul now, after all~”
