The morning sun reflected off the lake and the dew of the grass nicely. Salem was not thrilled to be up so early but he felt at peace. The ambient nature mana was more abundant during times like these and being so close to the lake made him feel alive. It was the type of training conditions that were prime for him to work in. He could cover more ground while trying a lot less harder.

Salem lugged out his staff. He wanted to focus on that first. Recent;y, he has found fighting harder. Using two hands to cast spells made things easier. However, he needs to use all his strength in both hands to use his staff at the moment. It made spell casting a lot less efficient. Leaving him open for a variety of trouble and pain to come his way. He needed to find a way to offset this problem.

Looking at the staff he decided to try lifting it one hand. Salem thought if he worked on his arm strength. He should be able to start moving the staff with ease. The moment he had a chance at using his full range of motion he should be able to get back into the swing of battle. He tried hard but he could only lift the staff, the fae could not even swing it. He was not the type that could lift with his muscles.

Salem looked at the staff in disappointment. His body was admittedly weak and his worst attribute. It was a long shot for him to be able to lift the staff. He put the staff into the ground and looked at it. He wished that he could just manipulate it using magic. No sooner than the thought passed his mind that he realized, he absolutely could. Water was his domain and could exert pressure on things.

Salem started to manipulate the water in the air. There was a lot present due to the morning dew and the lake. Instead of making a tentacle he focused on making a hand. He wanted to use the hand to grab the staff. The hand swished out to grab the staff. When it touched the staff the staff went right through it. The water was not solid enough to grab.

This time he compacted the water. When it was in hand form he sent it back to the staff. He was able to grab the staff and lift it off the ground. Salem was feeling pretty proud of himself. Using his water hand he would be able to control his staff. Salem called the staff to him and made a peculiar look. He had a lot of mana being connected to the realm, but even he did not have an infinite amount of it.

Picking up the staff, Salem tried wrapping the water around it. It was a lot easier for him to channel the spell with the staff in his hand. The staff even felt weightless. He moved it from hand to hand, and found he could use it single handedly in this way. This was the kind of thing he wanted. He tried using the staff in various forms. Salem found as long as the staff was touching him. He was good.

Salem put the staff underneath his feet and found a pleasant surprise. When he channeled the mana like that in the spell. He could use his staff for flight purposes. Which was fine because it saved him from using his wings all the time. He had inadvertently made a new flight spell, in his quest to make staff handling easier. Salem just needed to practice flying and balance a bit more.

Feeling satisfied with his staff riding Salem decided it was time to move on. The training field had various things to use. Salem got one of the dummies that were available. They were made of material that was hard to damage and easily repairable. Mana could also be input into them to give them basic instructions. If they were fast and not so draining, they could have made excellent combat fighters.

Salem put in the command to struggle out of getting bound. The last fight he had he realized his binding was not to secure. The man easily broke through it with his strength and muscles alone. It was great when it came to stopping momentum but Salem needed a more absolute The thought of being able to wrap up Alaric when he went all out put a smile on his face. That was the type of bindings he needed to be able to do.

Salem activated the dummy and got to work. He started by making a ribbon of water. He flung it at the dummy and had it wrap around. The ribbon wrapped around the training dummy and bound the hands and feet. The dummy fell over and hit the ground with a soft thump. The binding was successful. Not that hitting a still target should have been hard.

The dummy sat on the ground and started to struggle. It took it a moment but it used its physical strength and managed to break the restraints. It stood back up and powered down. The mana running out and needing more input. The dummies only could do a command once. Salem thought about the feedback he got from the dummy. His binding was technically too tight. The rigidness made it the easiest part to break. He would need to focus on making sure the spell flowed. Dispersing the target's strength when they are wrapped.

The fae sat down to meditate. One could connect to their magic and make some fine tuning aware. More powerful mages found it easier to get a lot done just by meditating and focusing. Sometimes they would even end up with more mana then they had started with. This breathing and training was what separated the great mages from the others. Salem would even believe that the most powerful mages did something similar, if they noticed it or not.

Salem finally believed he had the proper strength for the binding he was trying to make. The water was a lot more roomy to provide for wiggle room and the strength dispersal that he wanted. He started up the golem and gave it the struggle option. He wrapped the tentacle of water around the golem. It took even less time for the golem to escape. It simply slipped out during the struggle. The water was too loose.

Salem sucked his teeth, determined to get the spell right. He wanted to make sure he had a proper spell to keep prisoners and assailants at bay. It sucked that he had no one to get an example from. As far as he knew restraint type magic was an uncommon branch of magic. Making the job a lot harder to do. Still Salem wanted to get it done.

The next trick he tried was using more water. He wanted to wrap it around the body as a whole. Instead of going off and trying to make ribbons to bind. He could simply use more water. It was a bit more intensive but it should be able to get the job done with more relevant ease. It was this option or the deep sea fae was going to need another way of setting his plans in action. Magic was such a tricky discipline to master.

The fae waited for a moment to see what the golem would do. Then he realized he forgot to reset it. Salem used his mana and gave it the command. Then he just applied the more water scenario to the golem in question. The golem was wrapped up in a gentle wave of water that enveloped it.

The struggle was brief but the golem was eventually able to overpower it. The water dispersed and hit the ground. Salem needed to sit down a moment. Feeding the golem mana as well as using it continuously to try and power different spells could be considered draining. Even for someone as strong as him. He could not do it all day. Maybe for half a day at half output but that was the extent of what he could do. A small moment of meditation was needed to send him back to his peak condition. Then he could get back to mastering this spell.

Taking fifteen minutes of time out, Salem found he was ready to get back to work. He grabbed his staff and prepared. This time he was trying to compact the water in the air while expanding it. That way the water can stick to the target like a second skin, while being loose enough to transfer the strength out and maintain the shape. It should be enough to effectively lock a person in place.

Turning on the golem Salem was fully ready. He applied his new thought to the spell in question. The magic circle looked pretty cool. This time he focused the spell into a beam. Shooting it forward. It was a small beam that moved fast and hit the golem square. It was like a light mist wrapped around the golem. It was pretty in a shiny way. The golem was able to struggle out slowly. Instead of being disappointed it escaped. Salem smiled broadly. He was getting on the right path.

He decided to practice on his secret layering technique. He decided he would name the spell mist shackle as it was made of mist and kept the target in one spot. It was one of the hardest spells he had worked on in some time. Before he would simply blast them down. Now he had to try so much harder to do certain things than he was used to. The staff had become a blessing and a curse to him. He lost his blast but he started to understand life and other things with a certain clarity.

Focusing back on his spell casting. Salem was feeling pretty satisfied with the spell. The only thing he needed to do was the fine tuning. It was always required because the earlier versions of the working spell were all so mana inefficient. This one was really not different in that regard. When he fine tuned it better he would be able to save more mana for important things.

Salem decided to nick the portion of water vapor that would wrap up the head. For the most part mages just could not speak spells. If they all could, Fiore would be a lot more dangerous. Taking out their bodies should be enough to nab them. If not he would cross that problem when he came across it. At the moment he wanted to fine tune the spell. Once that was done he would move on.

The golem was activated and Salem tried out the spell. It held really well keeping the golem in place. It was nice because it could even swivel the head. Salem was happy with the mana expenditure on the spell as well. He considered the spell good enough. He wanted to work on something else anyway. Taking the time to get two spells into circulation so far was already a fair amount of work for him.

Getting that out of the way Salem wanted to work on some easier spells. They would be counted as strong but weaker than what he would usually do. That and they would be a lot easier on his mana pools. Salem took a moment and figured he could do it with a wall spell. A simpler means of defense that could help keep him alive.

Salem made a simple hand gesture and a wall of water shot up. Salem programmed the golem with a new objective. To punch any defense spell with the same strength as an S rank spell. It was straight forward enough for him. He summoned the wall again and simply watched as the golem ran to punch it. The water did not last long at all. It actually sunk back to the ground before the golem could even punch it. The golem would look like it was temporarily confused if it had any facial expression.

Salem tried it again. This time the golem successfully punched it. The force was enough to crack it. Salem made a face and was pretty proud of his work. Most of the shields he made at this level tended to be able to handle that amount of pressure. It was not the best thing he had managed on short notice but it was still impressive. Salem was feeling pretty proud of himself as a mage.

Salem activated the golem and had it punch it again. This time the wall came down. The green water hit the dirt and poofed. Just leaving behind some really healthy grass. To check the consistency and integrity Salem used the spell again, after activating the golem. The golem broke through the shield at the same rate. The mana cost was lower to use than a larger wall but still protected. The only thing he needed to think about was working on mana efficiency.

The fae felt like he was getting used making his spells more efficient. At least when he started he could lower the cost of using a spell by fifty percent of the original, it also kept the integrity of it being at its most powerful. Salem believed the key to doing it successfully was repetition and getting the spell used to the body. Fae bodies being proper vessels to handle such neutral elemental magic did make it easier on him.

While Salem was optimizing the spell. He did think about how funny it was that most races were inclined to use specific elements, none, or disinclined for some. The only ones not being so were humans. They somehow had no specific strength or weaknesses. It just came down to their individual differences and not themselves as a whole race. That and their ingenuity made them dangerous. The ability to create weapons for any occasion.

Salem finished the process and started to think about his next step. The wall would now be strong and sturdy when cast, it would also not take him too much mana to keep up with. This was the kind he wanted to have up in case of emergencies. It should also be enough to slow someone down if needed. The wall showed the basic need and functionality of magic.

Salem did not think he needed to but he decided to take time out and meditate. He figured if he trained one more spell today he would take the time out and do something else. Four felt like a good number to him. He needed about five minutes to send himself back to the prime state. Salem found it funny that he often worked his magic so restricted. Salem debated about letting his wings out. He felt more alive when he did but the mana consumption was not something he could really restrict.

The last thing Salem decided on was a spell that was a lesser version of his dew tailor. Long as he got it done he could save mana and maybe even stack the two. Doing that would add extra protection. He could even apply it to his staff for some reinforcement. Now Salem thought about the best way to do that. If the previous spell was like tailoring a great outfit. This one would be like making an accessory.

Salem fashioned his magic into a little flower that he wrapped around his wrist. The roots wrapped around his arm and he stopped it at that. He activated the golem to give a good punch. Salem put the arm up in a guard to take the hit. He was sent flying by the force of the punch. His arm bone gave a small but audible crack. He was not expecting a dislocation that fast.

Taking a second to heal himself. Salem was impressed with the golem more than with the outcome of the spell casting. It was pretty but also sloppy at the time. He recast the spell. This time the spell wrapped around the same arm. Instead of looking like roots they worked like vines and had little flowers blooming on them as well. The water looked very pretty in an ornamental way.

Salem remembered to activate the golem and gave it the same order. The golem rushed forward again and delivered the punch. When Salem put up his guard he felt pressure on his arm but the spell held. He just put a bit more into it. The spell was simple enough so it would not take him too long to mana optimize for him. Salem almost wanted to bet that he would be able to optimize it within a minute or less.

Salem started to optimize the spell and felt disappointed. Humans were not creatures that were prone to one way. Even when this body was upgraded to being a Fae it made him able to use his powers to an extent. When he was full on spirit these types of things were easy for him. Commanding water infused with life energy was as easy as lifting an arm. Now it was like lifting both arms with fifty pound weights on them. Possible but it was a lot harder than it needed to be.

It took him exactly twenty seconds to optimize the spell. He got the mana to feel right, stabilize and when he cast the spell it used a significantly less amount of it. Salem put his staff in the ground. He felt that he did a good job. Always one to be proud of himself. He actually used some mana and called out his wings. He fluttered off the ground and felt strength go through his body.

Salem did a small flying routine. He did not want his wings to grow rusty from lack of use. He started to apply the spells except the flying staff one to himself mid air. He was using them to practice and made sure he was used to them even in this form. He flowed between them with grace and ease before landing back on the ground.

Picking up his staff he did the last spell. He cycled through his magic and used various staff forms. By the time he finished he was pretty tired. He did not sweat much but just felt drained. He wanted to take a fresh swim in the lake then head out on the town. He was gonna pick up a mission to do some mediation. He was gonna make sure to take Alaric with him. The small one could do with a bit more traveling. Salem left the field feeling content with what he learned.
