Quintis

Orchidia, a city overgrown with vegetation and life—it was beautiful, at least, to the young Quintis. Quinn rose from his bedchambers early that morning, rays of sunlight bled through, rousing him from his slumber. He rubbed the sleep from his eyes, before getting dressed. Once dressed, Quinn made his way out to the streets of Orchidia, there while getting a bacon and egg sandwich—Quinn noticed that the streets seemed to be a bit darker. A huge shadow had been casted over the city by a bizarre and non-nature tree; a tree which towered over the city like some sort of monument to nature and it great powers. Quintis studied the bizzare tree for a moment, scratching the underside of his chin. As he observed this bizarre tree, Quintis noticed that a crowd of men and woman had gathered at its base, and amongst the crowd were lumberjacks and farmers.

Quinn approached the crowd; one of the lumberjacks held a huge axe, and promptly slammed it into the base of the tree, he hacked, and hacked, but to no luck. The lumberjack hand then started to tremble uncontrollably, causing him to lose grip on his axe, which tumbled to the ground. Boils started to appear on his hand, as his veins started to darken. Quintis cocked an eyebrow upward, then rushed to catch the guy as he proceeded to fall onto the ground. He pulled his cloak over the man, so that his skin was not touching what could be a curse or disease. Quinn drew a circle in the air, muttering a few words, as a glyph appeared in the center of the circle. A magic circle was then summoned, as blue ‘hard-light’ ‘dust’ speckled over the lumberjack- but nothing happened. Quintis’s frowned deepen, What’s the purpose of knowing healing magic if it doesn’t work? He thought bitterly to himself, as the slender and attractive figure of Inspector Nilan came to him.

“Damn it,” Nilan cursed as he approached Quinn and the Lumberjack. “That is the fifth Lumberjack this day!”

“Fifth?” Quinn questioned, his anger momentarily rising in his words. “What do you mean the fifth Lumberjack?”

“We have been trying to chop down the tree since we found it last night,” Nilan said, pulling a cigarette from his pocket and tucking it between his lips. “Originally we were planning to use it as some sort of tourist trap, or at least those rich assholes, but after finding that it sickens those who attempt to tear it down, we’ve decided that it was too dangerous.”

Of course, they’d try to make jewels from it, Quinn thought bitterly. He stood up, laying the man gently down onto the ground, using his cloak as a blanket, taking care as not to touch his skin. While the inspector spoke, Quintis took a moment to exam the Lumberjack and the nature of the disease—the disease was bizarre, it infected the man quickly, and spread throughout his body in a matter of minutes. It was obvious that the disease was magical, turned the user’s veins black, caused them to become so feverish that they begun to sweat, and boils appeared all over their body. Then his gaze turned back towards the tree, it was green, a dark green like sewer or swamp water, and thorned. Quintis got a sickening feeling from the tree, almost like an evil aura closely clung to the base of the mysterious tree.

“The disease and tree is obvious magical in nature,” Quintis stated after a while, silently watching as a group of medics came and picked up the sick lumberjack. “Has there been any casualties?”

Nilan shook his head. “Fortunately, no or well, at least not yet.”

That was good news, Quin thought. Nilan reached into pocket and brought out a device. “Listen, if you can get a sample of the tree me, I’ll pay you, I need to start closing off the streets and setting a perimeter around the tree, just incase something happens or someone decides to get smart.”

Quin nodded and did what was asked of him. He used the device to grab a sample of the tree, carefully making sure that his skin did not come into contact with the tree. While doing this, Quinn thought he sensed something odd about the tree—a presence, one vile and evil. But as soon as he sensed it, it disappeared. He returned to Nilan, and they spoke about the tree some before Nilan gave Quin his reward and he left.
