Having returned to the south, Atani figured it was high time she'd visit Marigold once more. She hadn't been to the quaint rustic town in ages. With all that was going on in the world, she hoped it was faring well, though she had a sinking feeling that was not the case. All of Fiore had reacted to the great surge of magic in different ways, but a handful were left damaged from the event. Mages from all around tried their best to mitigate such damages, but only so much could be done. Marigold in particular did not house a guild to protect them in the ways Hargeon, Magnolia, or even Oak did. Though this little town didn't have much going for it to paint a target, she feared their lack of defenses made them a target nonetheless. Easy prey for ruthless bandits who wanted to grab anything they could with their newfound powers.

Arriving at the town itself, there were gladly not any signs of current criminal activity, but she could still tell that something was amiss. The kind and friendly citizens she remembered well were not nearly as jovial as her past encounters had led her to believe. They hardly spared her a glance as she walked by. When they did, they quickly looked away and shuffled indoors or into the comfort of shadows. It was as if they were hiding from her. This... wasn't the usual response a renowned mage such as her should receive. The least she would receive was no acknowledgement at all, but to see people cower away? People who shouldn't perceive her as a threat? It was clear something happened to this town to make them wary of mages as a whole. Gods, with that sort of behavior, she wondered if there would even be any work for her here.

Atani traveled to where she knew the town's public request board to be. All the while, she took note of what the area was like around her. No matter which part of town she went through, they all reacted the same. Physically, nothing looked too damaged aside from the usual wear and tear that any old village would experience, but everyone's spirits remained fractured. Thus, it was not surprising to the elf when she saw that the request board was all but barren. It was not unusual to see this board filled with fewer jobs than usual given that Marigold was a fairly small town, but even so, this was a new one for her. She expected there to be only small tasks that anyone could complete with correspondingly small rewards, but much to her surprise, there was actually something that offered an impressively lucrative reward. And from the looks of it, magic would be involved.

Her anticipated client appeared to have rather deep pockets which was somewhat unusual for Marigold, a town that largely consisted of farmland and small businesses. What was even stranger was that this person wanted to put on a sort of comedy show simply to lift the spirits of the citizens of Marigold-- the gods knew they needed it after these past several months. Atani wasn't sure if that was the sort of thing that would interest her if her town just experienced a series of traumatic events, but to each their own. She kept learning that the culture in Fiore was rather different from the culture in Athalran (and that culture differed from town to town as well). So, while she didn't necessarily understand where the enjoyment came from seeing a scripted comedy play in the middle of a rural town, the most she could do was help out with the festivity.

Oh, and the part where magic would be involved? From the looks of it, this wasn't some standup comedy routine she would be helping with. That sort of thing wouldn't even really need her help aside from potentially helping with advertisement, which notably was not mentioned in the description of the job. No, this was like an actual play in the comedy genre complete with scripts, costumes, scenery-- the works. Maybe even some well-timed music to accompany the scenes. She was to meet with the person in charge of it all, the one with the pockets to fund the play and the one with the skill to direct it. In the job description, he mentioned the particular desire for persons who could bring a little something extra to the play, something that could give it an outstanding flair. And yes, despite the town's hesitance for magic, he mentioned that a mage's assistance would be spectacular.

It was reassuring that at least one person in this area appreciated the help mages such as her would bring. It was her hope that upon taking this job, she would be able to remind the citizens all the good magic could do. It wasn't just a tool to bring destruction. It wasn't even just a means of stopping criminals. It had so many other uses, including something as simple as creating a spectacle to dazzle others, which she did have experience in doing before in Marigold, so this job was perfect for someone like her. She already had some ideas in mind of what she could do with her nature and water magic, but the specifics remained to be seen. Before she could commit to any single idea, she would have to meet with the director of the play himself and see what sort of help he needed and if her magic was right for the job.

Atani looked at the paper of the job listing and read the address at which her client would be found. It didn't appear to be the site of the play, but rather his home residence. She walked around Marigold a bit before finally arriving. It was a rather modest home on the outside; she wouldn't have pegged it to belong to someone as wealthy as her client. There was a brass knocker on the door in the style of a marigold flower. She gave it a few rocks-- BANG BANG BANG-- and waited for an answer. It was mere moments before an older man came to the door. He was well groomed and had on clean but plain attire. He had the aura of a humble man. Judging by the reward he was giving for the quest, he was generous as well. In a town like this, if he came from great wealth, there was likely lots of it sitting around just waiting to be used.

She of course didn't know that for sure, but based on the things she could see, that would be her best guess for her client. The Wood Elf introduced herself to the man and explained that she wanted to help out with the play the job listing spoke of. He was delighted to hear that a mage of her repute was interested in helping with a performance such as this and suggested that they make their way to the theatre of Marigold. Along their walk, he began to speak about the history behind the theatre. Its roots began in the earliest stages of developing Marigold. At its peak, people from all over Fiore came to see the wonderful productions it put on, but gradually more and more folks stopped attending the plays for whatever reason. Perhaps it was due to local entertainment becoming more popular, or perhaps it was just due to a shift in the times.

Whatever the reason, the place drew less and less attention and now the theatre was all but abandoned. The recent tragedies that had befallen only sealed its fate. That is, it did until now. Her client mentioned that he had spent quite a bit of his own time fixing up the place, at least making it look presentable for the performers and audience. Any broken windows or beams had been prepared. Any cobwebs or mold spores had been taken care of. Any wildly grown plants were weeded out. Now, it just looked like any old historical theatre.

"You won't need to do anything with repairs, that's already taken care of," he explained, and right on queue, the theatre came into sight. It was a pleasantly quaint building that complemented the general look of Marigold; it was a shame it had to close down after all these years. She was sure her client felt great pride in reopening it.

"None of the performers or set designers are here at the moment, but I will notify them of your arrival shortly. We are very close to opening night, so we really only need your finishing touches."

Hearing that, it seemed that Atani had arrived just in time. The finishing touches were all that this man needed. If it was close to opening night, he probably would have went on with the production whether he received additional help or not, meaning that the play was already up to his standards. This extra pizzazz was just something to seal the deal. Something to truly wow the audiences and make them want to come back for more.

There was a copy of the script in her client's hand. He walked her through each and every scene upon the stage, dramatically reenacting the key parts himself-- he was somewhat of an actor himself, not just a director it seemed.

From the many, many acts the man put on along with the vivid descriptions he gave, Atani had a pretty good idea what sorts of things her magic could do to enhance the show. For each scene that he described, she volunteered some ideas of her own for where and when either nature or water magic (or a combination of both) could be employed. The director liked some of the ideas, shot down a few, made some tweaks to others, and made suggestions of his own. Together, they constructed an outline of what the finalized play would look like with her assistance; however, the finished product remained to be seen. Of course, she would have to run through the coordinated script multiple times at the rehearsals with the full cast of the play. She would have to coordinate her own magic spells with the rest of the special effects team.

Another reason to practice with the crew was to make sure that there was good chemistry with how the spells interacted with not just the scenery, but the actors themselves and the general vibe of the play. It was one thing to discuss with the director what would happen-- essentially putting it down on paper so to speak-- but it was another thing entirely to put those ideas into action. They would likely need to revise the original ideas, which could range from tweaking some to entirely scrapping others. She suspected they may even find the need to try something new, something that they hadn't discussed before. But for now, that would have to wait. There were no rehearsals scheduled for that day and the director still needed to inform the main cast and crew about his latest hiree. He thanked Atani for agreeing to help and bid her adieu.

The first day of rehearsal finally came. Or at least, it was Atani's first day of rehearsal. The rest of the cast and crew had already spent plenty of their time with the performance, but now it was the elf's time to shine. She could tell that there were those who were eager for her to arrive, and then there were those who were not so eager. Regardless, even among the latter group, there was a consensus that no matter the outcome of her involvement or lack thereof, they were happy to be bringing Marigold's stage to life once more. That was all that mattered in the end whether or not a mage such as her was there or not.

Before any actual physical rehearsing began, Atani went over what sort of modifications she and the director had decided on. As expected, there was already some feedback from the crew.

There was already some feedback from the crew before the rehearsals even began. Some of the ideas they were fond of, and others they were not. They decided to give it all a shot though and see if it felt any different acting it out versus simply reading it on paper. And of course it did, but their opinions didn't waver much after running it through. Overall she felt as if the play was improved by adding her magical special effects, but she agreed that something was still off in some parts. It took lots of conversing with the team, bouncing ideas off of one another, but eventually they were able to find something that worked with everyone.

Throughout the process, Atani was happy to see that everyone's attitudes gradually shifted in favor of magic. Even the most stubborn of actors had eventually eased up once they saw all the beauty magic could bring.

There were so many other minds to change about magic though; the members of the play weren't the only skeptics in the area. Hell, this wasn't even limited to Marigold either. Atani was certain that there were even those in Hargeon or Magnolia, who had been protected by light guilds for years upon years, who were suddenly afraid of (or at the very least wary of) magic. In any case, she was hopeful this magic show of a play would shine some positive light on magic, remind the people of Marigold why they once put faith in mages like her in the first place-- you didn't need to save the world to change minds like that.

The cast and crew went through some more rehearsals. Atani was admittedly the one who needed the most work out of everyone, but that was to be expected. Though her role was small, she had the least experience out of everyone.

Not only the least amount of experience with the script, but the least amount of experience overall with acting, stage directions, coordination, and the like. Eventually, she got the hang of it and in no time at all, they were running through the entirety of the play smoothly. After a couple more full days of rehearsal, the elf finally felt that both she and the set were ready for the show. In all the work that they put in though, this show would only be for a single day. Or at least, her magical addition would only be for the one day, making this performance truly a spectacle to beheld.

On opening night, an abundance of townsfolk filled the seats. Despite the theatre being closed for so long, Atani could tell that the memories and tradition in it still lived well in the hearts of them all. They were thrilled to see another show being put on after all this time, and were even dazzled by Atani's show of magic. She never once showed her face to the audience though and let them believe the magic was even more intertwined with the play. Besides, she didn't need the spotlight. Just the jewels.
