The wound in the elf's arm seared. Her magic had slowed the spread of the venom and suppressed the blood flow, but it hadn't cured her as she had hoped. One would think that a water-based healing spell would be good for flushing out toxins, but Barrang's venom was far more potent than anyone had given it credit for. The reality of the situation, Atani supposed, was that for as many people spoke of Barrang's terror, there likely weren't many who had a taste of the serpent's fangs and lived to tell the tale. It was for that reason that Atani hoped she was able to find a healer who could treat it better than she could.

The likelihood of finding someone like that though... ? Atani had been classified as an S-Ranked mage for quite some time. This ranking was granted due to her impressive use of powerful healing magic.

But, the traditional use of this magic of hers was geared towards injuries. It was not used to treat illnesses or poisons. On the other hand, she did suppose that Astera was filled with creatures of varying levels of toxicity. It was home to all kinds of snakes-- sea and land alike-- as well as spiders, sea urchins, jellyfish, and more. Surely the healers would know what to do about her problem.

After dropping off the trophy she took from Barrang to her client and receiving her payment, she made way for the nearby clinic. Though her spell removed some of the side effects after the initial bite, she could slowly feel them returning by the minute: chills running down her spine, muscles trembling in bouts of sudden weakness, shooting headaches just above the brow. She figured she was also suffering from some amount of mana depletion from her battle.

Needless to say, by the time she made it to the clinic in question, she was quite visibly ill. It didn't take her long to be seen, as you didn't have to be a doctor to tell that the venom showed little sign of stopping on its own.

The doctor asked what she had been bitten by. When she replied saying "Barrang," a smile crossed his face, the kind of smile that annoyed Atani to no end. It was clear he didn't believe her-- she wagered he probably saw his fair share of patients claiming to have been attacked by the 'mythical' creature. It didn't make the patients' injuries any less real, and she wasn't sure it would change their course of treatment either. There was only one Barrang that Astera knew of, and if its mere existence was sometimes thought of as a hoax, there was definitely no antivenom.

She couldn't tell exactly how she was being treated. She knew the wound itself was being patched up, and something was being put through her system intravenously, but the details were fuzzy. Her vision became hard to focus and spoken words sounded so slurred together, she wasn't even sure she was hearing Fiorian anymore. Sooner or later, she fell to sleep-- perhaps due to sedatives-- and awoke to a far quieter setting.

The first thing she noticed was that there was no one around her. Good, she thought. I need a few minutes to myself anyway.

The next thing she noticed as her hearing and sight returned to normal was some chatter among the nurses not too far away.

"You don't think Rhea's husband will have to be admitted soon, will he?" one asked.

"Heavens, I sure hope not, but I fear he's turning up like all the other fishermen..."

All the other fishermen? How many were the nurses talking about. Was there something strange going on in Astera's waters again?

"... Please tell me at least one of them has woken up."

No words were said in reply by the other nurse. Just a solemn shake of the head.

"Oh... I see."

Atani found the situation to be rather curious. She didn't realize that there was some sort of affliction among Astera's mariners causing them to fall into a deep sleep. Usually when she encountered problems on the water, it impacted marine life moreso than the humans who usually sailed far above the threats that lay deep beneath the waves. Once she got out of this place, she decided that she would at least take a look around the docks to see what was up. There was a chance it was a physical threat like Barrang to be dealt with.

There was a saying about doctors making the worst patients. Although Atani was not a doctor herself, she was by trade a healer, and so the saying translated over to the elf quite nicely. The physician who treated her was concerned since the venom that had entered her bloodstream was not one that he recognized-- maybe because it came from Barrang rather than the other usual serpents native to Astera-- but Atani was insistent that she was well enough to go back to her guild hall. She kept trying to reassure the doctor that she was highly adept at healing magic, but he wouldn't hear it until she demanded to sign herself out of the clinic. There was no sense in being treated from an attack by a creature the doctor didn't even think existed. She would just present with signs of delirium at that point which wouldn't help her case.

She wasn't one hundred percent, but she could manage a short investigation. After leaving the clinic, the elf pulled on a jacket to cover the injury to her arm and set out for Astera's docks. As she did, she kept an ear out for any further mention of this strange sleeping spell of sorts that was cast upon the local fishermen, but not a word was uttered of it that she could hear out in the open. It seemed if she wanted to get to the bottom of this, she would have to ask around herself.

Once she reached the docks, it didn't take long to find someone who had some information regarding what was going on. Most of these men had sailed with one another at least once in their lifetime. In essence, it was one of those places where everyone knew everyone. When that happened, news traveled fast.

Atani listened to what the sailors had to say about these strange happenings. What she had heard at the clinic only seemed to be half the story. Not only were a striking number of sailors mysteriously falling into a deep sleep, but there were some who set out to sea never to return. What made matters even more confusing was that sometimes on journeys, a ship would go out and return with a combination of sleeping sailors and missing men.

Now that she'd gotten some more background, Atani decided that it would be a good time to bring up that she had heard that Rhea's husband in particular was one of the men that came back in a deep slumber.

"Oh, poor Rhea. Bless her soul. She went to the Rune Knights for help, but they haven't done a damn thing about it."

It was then that Atani decided to offer her help.

The men at the docks were happy to hear that a member of Infinity Wolves was willing to step in where the Rune Knights had so obviously failed. They led her to Rhea's house. There, the woman stood at her husband's bedside. The dark circles under her eyes told Atani that this woman hadn't slept for at least a day-- she probably hadn't slept ever since she realized her husband was in this mysterious coma.

Atani introduced herself to Rhea and explained that she was there to help. She asked if she had any more information that could help her with this investigation, seeing as she obviously hadn't left her husband's side in a very long time. Evidently, Rhea noticed that her husband had been saying some weird things in his slumber. Alone that would not have been out of the ordinary, but the fact that the other sleeping sailors uttered the same things made Atani suspicious.

Atani asked if there were any boats departing soon. Despite the frightening disappearances and sleeping spells, the sailor she spoke to did mention that there were still those who had to go out to sea in order to provide for their families. In fact, there was one such group of fishermen who were ready to leave in a few hours. With the word of the man she met to back her up, she was allowed permission on the boat in hopes of seeing for herself what the cause of all this was. She had her suspicions, but there was only one way to know for sure...

They sailed along the waters until Astera's shoreline was but a speck in the distance. Even then, once they were well out of help's reach, the creature she suspected to be causing these sleeping spells had not yet made its presence known to her.

But then, after some time had passed, it finally did. The song started off as something Atani hadn't even recognized at first. The men aboard the ship, however, detected it immediately. They unanimously became distracted by the harmony. So much, in fact, that they stopped whatever they were doing to search for the sound.

The 'sound' Atani only knew to exist based on the sailors' reactions soon came audible to the elf in due time; however, she didn't succumb to the same compulsions the men around her did. This only confirmed her theory: there was a siren in Astera's waters.

It was a creature she thought was only native to Seven, but for one reason or another, one must have found its way to Fiore. But where... ?

Her search for the siren was interrupted as she saw the men before her jump overboard into the waters. She ran to the side of the boat.

Her mind went to the worst possible scenario. She knew that a siren's call was supposed to lure men to their deaths, often via drowning, but much to her relief they didn't sink. Instead, they actively began to swim towards what Atani could only imagine was the source of the sound. Finding the siren became much easier than anticipated...

Atani used one of her spells to walk on the surface of the ocean itself. She followed the men who led her straight to the nest of the siren. Usually, this would be where the creature would begin to hunt her hypnotized prey, but she didn't anticipate a female elf accompanying the men. Knowing that she would pose a threat, the siren lashed out at Atani, but before the creature could get very far, Atani hit it with one of her spells, followed by an arrow to a vital spot. The siren was dead and the men were free from their hypnosis. When she returned to shore, she also found that Rhea's husband, along with the others, had awoken from their slumber.
