Atani's work with Dr. Gerard had been a success. The cure whose necessary ingredients caused her to run all over Baska and do some rather questionable tasks for a member of a light guild such as herself was finally at the stage where it could be used in the exact way Dr. Gerard intended it to be. And thank the stars above it did, because Atani wasn't sure the town of Baska could wait any longer.

From what the elf gathered, all of this started out with word of suspicious activities going on down by Baska's lake. Nobody thought much of it. In all likelihood, it was just some teenagers having their fun or a local gang brewing up trivial trouble. Neither parties usually had to be taken seriously, but it ended up being Baska's grave mistake not to. A gang was indeed doing some shady activity down by the lake, but it wasn't 'trivial' by any means. Unbeknownst to the citizens of Baska, their own water supply was being poisoned right beneath their noses. But not in any way that would cause illness. No, instead, this 'poison' acted more like a drug. It caused violence to unexpectedly surge forth.

Even then, this level of violence, although very much capable of causing harm to others, was largely limited to wildlife. It was first observed in boars. When the wild boars that roamed Baska's vast fields would stop to take a drink from that lake in particular or from nearby streams that fed into the lake, they would be engrossed in that blind fit of crazed rage. It honestly shocked citizens more than anything. The simplest solution to not getting attacked by a violent boar was to get nowhere close to the boar in the first place. It was a simple and effective solution for the time being. People figured it was just some sickness that caused the animals to be erratic for a while, like a version of rabies on steroids. Eventually, it would faze out.

They were wrong.

There was apparently some incident back before Atani came to Baska where there were so many boars affected by this poison, all their violent rage couldn't be contained within the fields surrounding Baska City. The craze incited a stampede headed straight for the city itself. Being the magnet it was, however, to adventurers of all kinds, people put an end to it.

The stampede never reached the city. From what Atani heard of the stories, it seemed that nobody was seriously injured by it either which was good news to hear. Even so, that unexpected moment put people on high alert. Further investigation went into this poisonous substance, and it became clear that this not only had the potential to effect animals, but it could effect humans and other humanoid species as well. In short, this was not just about the wildlife anymore. This was about them, so now they needed a cure.

Dr. Gerard was one of the key figures to developing this cure. Since the boars were the ones primarily affected by this poison, getting a viable sample from them was key to understanding the chemical reactions that went on when it became integrated into bodily cells. It was a level of understanding that could not be achieved through taking samples of the polluted water alone. In the end, Dr. Gerard was able to synthesize a cure, but it was in limited supply. Before Atani met up with him, he'd been using it very sparingly. Thus, he hoped that producing more of the serum would not be necessary. He hoped to reason with the Cold Colliers.

Perhaps if Dr. Gerard attempted to reason with the gang prior to the situation escalating so horribly, there would have been hope for a peaceful solution. They initially poisoned the water to make a statement. The townsfolk didn't listen. They continued to do it time and time again, the damage from doing such growing with each and every attempt until there was no choice but to listen to them. But by that point, they were too far gone. The Cold Colliers as a whole were well past wanting to sit down and talk it out. Maybe they enjoyed the chaos they ensued. Maybe they finally gained a level of control over Baska they so desperately longed for. Maybe the just had a sick passion for blood lust.

Whatever the case, the situation was growing out of hand. Atani wasn't even sure if she could stop the criminal organization on her own, but she unfortunately didn't see any other mages or adventurers willing to lend a hand. Either they got the hell out of Baska, or by this point, they might've been tainted by the water themselves. Atani was lucky enough to be able to make use of sacred water magic.

With it, she was able to purify any contaminants. Even though she bought water imported from outside Baska, the Wood Elf was still skeptical of it. If the Cold Colliers had contaminated Baska's one and only major water supply, their next step could be the imported liquids for all she knew. One could never be too careful, especially with the state the Baska was in now. Between the few days the Wood Elf spent helping Dr. Gerard with the plague, the situation became exponentially worse. What started with one enraged wild boar turned into a stampede of enraged wild boars. To combat the spread of the plague, a cure was developed. Although it was intended to treat only the infected animals, it was safe enough to use on virtually anyone. Better yet, it was effective.

Perhaps the Cold Colliers didn't like that. Atani didn't know. But soon after the cure was developed, the poison began to spread. At first it was only a couple humans who became infected. It only skyrocketed from there. Every day, more and more people were poisoned as more and more people drank the tainted water. The cure was still viable, but it wasn't widespread enough.

That was where Atani once again came in. With detailed instructions courtesy of Dr. Gerard himself, she set off to gather supplies to increase the current volume of the limited serum supply. After gathering said supplies, she had even played a role in developing the improved cure herself. With her rare and powerful healing magic combined with Dr. Gerard's medicinal expertise, the cure was essentially perfect. The only reason she was hesitant to fully call it so was that everything could be improved upon, but for the purposes of the cure as they needed it to be, their innovations more than sufficed.

Still, despite their strenuous efforts and great successes, the Cold Colliers retaliated with even an even stronger force than before. To no one's surprise at all, even more of the townsfolk became infected. It had gotten so bad that many shops and restaurants were closed in fear of letting in one of the crazed people. People barricaded themselves into their homes. For a sunny afternoon in the middle of the week in a merchant town, the streets were worryingly barren. They were the emptiest Atani had ever seen them. Sounds of screams and broken glass echoed far away.

You would either have to be really brave or really stupid to venture out onto the streets. And honestly? Atani wasn't sure where she fell on that continuum.

Most of her friends would agree that she definitely wasn't stupid, but Atani knew that all things considered, her actions as of lately haven't proven her to be considerably brave, that was for sure. She wasn't out here to prove that she was brave, not to anyone, not even to herself. She supposed that the primary reason was that she somehow felt responsible for all of this. If she were a stronger mage, she might've been able to stop the organization's leader, Mattoro, at the arena rather than getting overwhelmed with all the goons that came after her. If she were a more influential mage, she might've been able to use her presence as an intimidation of sorts. If she were a more cunning mage, she might've been able to trick the Cold Colliers to coming to a compromise. She might've been able to sabotage them. Who knew, but whatever those possibilities were, her chances were gone now. Now, nearly all of Baska was infected with the poison. She feared the worst.

The girl tread cautiously along the streets. At the moment, she was in one of the spots that had not yet been overrun by the crazed populous. It created for an unnervingly eerie mood, but at the very least the silence that dominated the immediate area was easy to be broken should any threat come her way. Though she was alone, she felt far safer where she was than if she would find herself in a more crowded area-- an area where she would likely find allies, but also an area where she would even likelier be attacked. Considering the S-Ranked mage preferred to work alone, she thought she'd take her chances and remain where she was.

Lo and behold, her tactic had worked. "Help!" a man's voice called. Atani quickly went to try and find the source. It didn't take long to find the man in trouble. As luck would have it, it just to happened to be the man she was looking for: Dr. Gerard. But as luck would also have it, he was being chased by two of the effected citizens. Didn't the doctor have the cure? Why wouldn't he be using it on the people in front of him?

Unless... ? No, that couldn't have been it. The only supply of the cure they had couldn't have been destroyed, could it? He couldn't have run out of it already? If so, that would make their job exponentially harder. Although Atani tried not to be pessimistic, she would even say the loss of the cure would make saving the town impossible. Gods, she hoped that wasn't the case. But before she could get any information out of Dr. Gerard on the current situation, she had to save him.

It didn't take much effort to subdue the citizens. While infected, their movements were rash. All they cared about was inflicting damage no matter the form. Their movements were sloppy. Their aims were misguided. They didn't even try to dodge, only prioritizing hurting others over protecting themselves. Dealing blows to their head to knock them out was a breeze, though Atani wasn't sure exactly how long they would actually stay down with all the juice pumping through their system. Her discussion with Dr. Gerard would have to be quick.

While they were in the clear, he conveyed the most important facts to Atani. The cure was safe, but it needed to heal everyone.

The quantity of the serum was not the issue. Rather, it was the method of delivery. While it could very well be dispensed in a vaporous state as the two of them had designed it to be, the problem lied in the speed at which it needed to be distributed. While one sector of Baska was easy enough to lock down and treat, he had never anticipated for the entire town to become infected. Running around and spraying each and every person they saw would be ineffective. Not only did they risk themselves getting hurt in the process, but the cure could be lost as well among the masses. The only solution was to disperse the serum as a mist over the entirety of Baska City.

At first, the plan sounded impossible. That is, until Dr. Gerard explained that he had a plan for setting up detonators around the critical parts of town. If they were to be set off, everyone should theoretically be cured. But of course, being the man he was with very little combat experience, he couldn't do it alone. Not in the state Baska was in. He didn't even have to ask for the elf's help.

She wanted this plague to be done and over with just as much as the doctor. Once the mess she found herself tangled in got settled, she would hightail it out of Baska and back to Astera-- Oak would have to wait for another day. As much as the elf wanted to visit all unexplored parts of Fiore, she didn't think it was wise to go to that town in the present moment. Not with her guild emblem on display for all of Eternal Nightmare to see this early on in her guild's founding.

Frankly, she probably should've left Baska a long time ago. Any traveler like her who wished to protect themselves would have by now. Every drop of water in the damn town ran the risk of turning people insane, herself included. Despite her best efforts, there was always the chance of failure. Always.

So what kept her here? She didn't live here. She didn't know anyone who lived here. Her only purpose in Baska was to make money, and at the moment 90 percent of the town's population was incapable of giving her what she came there for to begin with. And yet she was still there.

A healer couldn't exactly leave a town in the middle of a plague... right? Even if it wasn't technically a 'plague' by medical terms. It was a mass poisoning rather than a mass infection. There was no illness for her to cure, no damage for her to heal-- save for the wounds inflicted by the crazed, she supposed. But in essence, there was no way her magic could treat the root cause of Baska City's plight like it could treat any other ordinary thing. Even by that principle she couldn't really justify staying in the midst of chaos when there were doubtlessly plenty of others to help, but still here she was discussing a plan with the local doctor for how to eliminate the plague once and for all.

The first two locations on Dr. Gerard's list were along the outskirts of Baska, namely the outermost parts of the east and west sides of town. Time wasn't the issue for traversing from one side of town to the other. Under normal circumstances, it was more than doable. No, the problem was making sure that it would be possible to do so without running into too much trouble along the way.

It would be foolish to expect nothing from the crazed masses. Though they were mostly concentrated in the centre of Baska, they were most definitely still present throughout the streets. But, seeing as they tended to be drawn towards people and chaos, it left a curious window open for Atani and Dr. Gerard to take.

Normally, alleyways weren't the safest things to go down. They were notorious for being the hot spots for thugs, delinquents, criminals, the whole sort. Considering all those people now had no reason to even be there in the first place though, they paved the perfect path for her and Dr. Gerard to take in their mission to place the detonators.

The alleys were quiet. Screams and shouts could always be heard echoing from the streets, but never in the narrow passageways that the enraged persons never thought twice to go down. They were far too cramped for the type of boisterous ravaging the infected tended to display. Unfortunately though, hers and the doctor's shelter would have to come to an end soon enough. They were soon to arrive at the destination in the east... A destination that was out in the open for all to see.

Unfortunately, there was no other location for the detonator to be set. It had to be out in the open, or else the serum would have nowhere to spread in its mist form. Atani glowered as her eyes fell upon the area they were to infiltrate. It was currently occupied by two of the infected. It was known that they preferred to attack those who were not infected with the poison themselves, but in the absence of such people, it appeared that they would end up turning on one another. All that pent up rage had to go somewhere she supposed. But the moment she and Dr. Gerard made themselves known to the people, she knew they would change targets without hesitation.

The plan was simple. Atani would serve as ample distraction for the doctor while he got to work setting up the detonators. She would protect him as she did so whilst subduing the attackers to the best of her ability. She was cautious not to injure them any further than they already were, for once this was all done and over with, they were still innocent people who would come to their senses the moment the cure was distributed.

That was indeed what the elf did. Without the use of her magic (for she didn't want to draw any unwanted attention), she was able to subdue the frenzied thanks to the combat skills she honed in Athalran. She did have to knock them out, but only because restraining them would be far too dangerous. With the state they were in, they would probably hurt themselves trying to get out of any restraints. That, and if they were to break free, that would just pose for new problems later.

In no time at all, Dr. Gerard set up the first detonator. Atani took care of the current threats. Then, they were on their way to the west to do the exact same thing all over again. Just as before, they traveled the paths few Baskans would willingly travel themselves. In her opinion, they were making good time. There was still plenty of light left in the day which meant there was plenty of time for her and the doctor to end this once and for all.

The site on the west where they were to plan the next detonator set up for a scene almost identical to the one in the east.

Having done this once before, the two knew the drill. Atani would fight, Dr. Gerard would set up the detonator for the serum. She would do so without using magic, he would do so without wasting a single moment. They had gotten done with that one even faster than the first go around, which meant they only had one spot left, yet it was the most dangerous of all... the centre of Baska.

Two on one was enough trouble for Atani to begin with. Though she had dealt with the attackers just fine, she had not done so coming out unscathed. But now... Now there were six. Six people, all poisoned by the water, all surrounding the exact spot where Dr. Gerard needed to be.

She held them back for as long as she could. She drew their attention away from the doctor and kept the fight just interesting enough for them to keep pursuing her instead of the cure-- the very thing they didn't realize was the real threat all along. Eventually, enough time had passed. The doctor set off the detonators and dispersed the cure all over town. The infected people collapsed, but soon arose. They were dazed, but they were safe. Having saved Baska from the plague, Atani was rewarded.
