Atani

Atani awoke in the comfort of her own bed... in her own room... contained within the guild hall.

She had to say, it was an odd change of pace to be physically living within the walls of her guild. She knew that there were some who did the same in Blue Pegasus, but Atani was not among those numbers. With a guild as well established and long-standing as Blue Pegasus too, it was more common to find mages of the guild living elsewhere. Of course, that was also taking into consideration that many mages belonging to it were wealthy enough to have their own place. Atani wouldn't consider herself rich, but she still did have enough jewels to live comfortably in a small apartment. Compared to her ex-guild members, even that was considered closer to the bottom rung of the ladder of wealth. Others were expected to have nicer places, but that was besides the point.

Neither she nor Lee, nor Raymus, nor Konyo had nearly enough time to search for a place to live. If they were remotely in the same position as Atani, they likely didn't even know where to begin their search either. Raymus most definitely felt the same.

Luckily, there was a solution. Contained within the massive castle that served as their guild hall were an excessive number of rooms. The reason she said excessive was because ultimately, the bare necessities for the guild's use would be located on the ground floor. The request board, bar, common areas, and all that good stuff were all within sight just from walking in the two front doors. The back exit, also located on the ground floor, led to an expansive area full of greenery that starkly contrasted the sand banks and rocky shores that dominated the majority of Astera's natural landscape. With enchantments placed on the grounds of the guild hall, it served as the perfect spot to train.

And, well, where did that leave the rest of the space in the guild hall? A decent portion of it was being converted into rooms that future guild members could live in if they so choose. These rooms had a simple, generic design applied to them. It was easiest just to keep things uniform. Should anyone wish to alter its appearance once settled in, they were more than happy to allow them to do whatever they pleased. So long as it was safe, of course.

Being a founder of Infinity Wolves, Atani had the benefit of not only taking the first pick of her room (alongside LeeAnn and the others, of course, but they all made their decisions around roughly the same time if she recalled correctly) but she was also able to fully customize it right from the very beginning. There was still lots of work to be done, but from what progress she had made thus far, she had gotten to the point where she felt at home.

Her design of choice was reminiscent of homes and bedrooms that were typical of Athalran, though she did put her own spin on it. As much as she loved to be reminded of her home in the mythical forest, it would be boring to be surrounded by the same design she'd spent so much of her life-- the life she could remember anyway-- looking at. Despite the fact Wood Elves had an innate connection with nature magic, they didn't like to flourish it. Certainly not in their homes. At their roots, they were still creatures of humility, and that often became reflected in their interior design. Likewise, Atani would say she was humble as well.

However, she saw no reason for that to restrict how she lived when in the privacy of her own home. It wasn't like she would be inviting elves over anyway who would think she's just showing off for having elaborate decor and look down upon her. One of the things she liked about humans was that they were not nearly as judgmental in that regard in comparison to the elven folk she knew.

So, what did she end up doing with her room? It wasn't quite finished yet. Atani hadn't even figured out all the details due to the thousands of ideas swarming in her head. It was hard to decide on just one, but she did furnish everything in wood. Her bed frame, desk, dressers, and bookshelves were all made of natural material. Similarly, so were her bed sheets and curtains-- nothing synthetic there.

Taking inspiration from Manzo's Joyan restaurant and hot spring, the elf had created a bamboo water fountain with her magic. A bamboo shoot stood in a small pool of water. Another piece was fused to the top to create a spout whose tip was angled downwards to face the pool. Pretty on its own, but not magical.

Not magical at least until you realized that water was endlessly flowing from the spout, trickling gently into the pool of water below. No artificial pipes or tubes. No gears. No lacrimas. Just water being enchanted to funnel itself up the bamboo shoot, through the spout, and into the basin only for the cycle to repeat itself. The water would never have to be changed, for the elf's magic kept it pure.

It produced the most calming sound that served as both pleasant background noise to fall asleep to and a kind presence to wake up to in the mornings. This morning in particular, Atani was more thankful than usual for it. Though she felt safe in the comfort of her own room, every day she left, she couldn't help but feel reminded of the issue she spoke to LeeAnn about. Whenever she walked through the guild halls, all she could imagine was losing control of her magic. Water blasting through the glass windows. Thorns ripping apart the furniture. Violence that scared Hikari. Power that frightened the animals within the guild walls. She swore an oath to protect, but that oath was sworn before understanding the extent of her magic.

Could she protect? Yes, she could protect others from threats. There was no doubt in her mind that she was capable of that, but only if she acted alone. Could she protect if there were others by her side? Doubtful, and even with that in mind, she had formed a guild with LeeAnn anyway knowing that acting with others was expected of her. As Lee herself put it, guilds were supposed to be like a family. Atani didn't even know what having a family was supposed to be like, but she knew enough. Families didn't hurt each other. Good ones at least didn't. And Atani was afraid she wouldn't be able to uphold that very simple notion. What was worse was that she was on a tight timeline to figure all this out.

Infinity Wolves settled in the west. It was common knowledge that more or less, Eternal Nightmare laid de facto claim over the west in its entirety. At the very least, they laid claim to any town in the west that mattered. Astera, the very place where Infinity Wolves set up base, was unfortunately one of those towns. They needed to take it back from the dark guild.

Eternal Nightmare was filled with powerful folks. While each of the founders for her own guild were strong in their own right, they couldn't afford to operate divided among themselves. Atani, for one, was a healer-- quite notably the only healer within the guild at the moment. Despite not being able to fight with the prowess like Raymus or Konyo, healers such as herself still remained the crux of a good team. She wouldn't know what she would do if she refused to help her friends out of shameful fear only to find out later someone (or gods forbid multiple someones) got severely injured... or worse. And she could have prevented it. Maybe, her brain kept telling her. Maybe you could have prevented it, but you could have made it much worse.

The scenario played over and over again in the elf's head. She grabbed a pillow from her bed and buried her face in it to hide from the world. She took slow, controlled breaths. The air was warm against the fabric of the pillow.

Tâd, nêl, canad.

She slowly let the pillow fall back into her lap. She moved it back onto her bed and finally stood up.

As much as she wanted to hide away from the world, she couldn't. She was an S-Ranked mage for Sayha's sake. An S-Ranked mage who fought in Bosco, who was renowned for her unique healing magic, who defected from a well protected guild to create a safe haven for outcasts like her. On paper, she was bold. She took risks for the greater good. She exercised her power without fear. Looks, however, could be deceiving. In reality, it was far from the truth.

Atani lazily changed into whatever outfit she pulled from her closet. Unlike her days in Blue Pegasus, she no longer felt the need to go out of her way for looks. On days that were gray and muddled with self doubt, it took a surprising amount of effort to look as pretty as she did in Blue Pegasus. So, she went for a less energy intensive option. It was by no means flashy. It didn't provide a certain air of dignity. It was in fact rather plain. If it wasn't for her pointed ears, few people would spare her a second glance as she walked down the streets of Astera, for she looked just as ordinary as anyone else.

Atani liked that. If she couldn't physically turn cloak herself with magic to hide from others, she could at the very least blend in with the masses. If you looked the same as just about everyone else, you were as good as invisible.

Atani took a peek at her current stash of jewels. A slight frown came to her face as she did so. The elf did a good job saving from when she lived in Hargeon. She intentionally did so bearing in mind that in all likelihood she would have little time to take jobs in the early phases of forming Infinity Wolves. Thank the gods she had enough self control to do so, for that exact worry became her reality. She had virtually no time to take even the simplest of jobs. All her working hours were spent reconstructing the guild, assisting LeeAnn with administrative duties, helping take care of the animals, refurbishing her bedroom... The list went on and on. But finally, things began to settle, and she was glad they did because by the looks of it, the stack of cash she had saved over the months was beginning to look rather thin. It was time to take a job.

As much as she didn't want to, it was a necessity. Besides, she didn't have to do anything she wasn't comfortable with. At the end of the day, as long as she obtained a decent amount of jewels from her work, that's all that mattered.

Atani had to leave the guild hall to search for quests. Although they had a request board set up, their guild was simply too new to get many requests. Hell, she was sure there were some people out there in Astera who didn't even know if they were allowed to put in requests for them yet, which was fine for now. This was to be expected of a new guild, especially one that was encroaching on land heavily influenced by another guild. This would be the expected response in any situation regardless if said guild was light, dark, or unaffiliated.

Luckily, one of Astera's stops for wandering mages and adventurers wasn't too far from the guild hall itself. Atani reached it shortly and read over the multitude of requests posted. It seemed there was a disproportionate ratio of people who needed help and people who were willing to give help. The board was completely flooded.

Atani found that rather curious, but then again Astera wasn't exactly known for being a hot spot for mages and adventurers, not in the way Baska was at least. It was a densely populated city wherein, much like Hargeon, tourism dominated. If there were outsiders visiting the city, chances are they were taking a vacation. Furthermore, when there wasn't an established guild within the city itself, there wasn't a reliable number of mages with permanent residence to the city. This was where Hargeon and Astera differed. Or at least, that's where Hargeon and Astera used to differ. Now, there was Infinity Wolves, and Atani was confident her guild would be able to provide the kind of services Astera so deeply needed.

One quest in particular drew her attention. It looked to be quite old, and it offered a handsome amount of jewels for what seemed to be an easy task. For a while now, fish have been inexplicably disappearing from fishermen's usual waters. It was putting quite the hurting on their revenue, so it was imperative they figured out why this was happening and how to put an end to it. The high reward Atani figured came from the build-up.

What happens when your request is sitting there and nobody takes it? You assume it's because the people looking to take the quest don't think the effort is worth the reward. So, you raise it in hopes that it attracts someone. Is the reward still too low? You raise it again. In this particular instance, it worked. Although there were jobs that sounded like more fun, she couldn't pass up the sort of cash they were offering, not when she desperately needed it. Plus, from the looks of it, there didn't seem to be much inherent risk to the job. Perfect.

She tore the paper from the board so nobody else would steal her work and stashed it in her pocket. Her search would begin with talking to her client directly. She introduced herself as a member of Infinity Wolves-- she needed to get the name of her guild out there after all-- and inquired about the mysterious disappearance of the fish, explaining that she herself was relatively new to the town and was thus unaware of how fishing operations normally took place in the local community. The man was happy to explain the situation for her, and as he did, she began to piece it all together.

The type of fish he was known for catching was most active at noon. Their populations had been steady before, but they suddenly plummeted without warning. There was no ecological reason for this that he could think of. No invasive species, no infection, no pollution, no hazard of any kind. For some reason, that sort of fish was the only one impacted. All the other fishermen he knew either complained of no shortage in their haul or complained of the exact phenomenon he was experiencing. Atani thanked the man for providing her with the information and set off to solve this mystery for herself.

If the fish most active at noon were the only ones impacted, that signaled to Atani that at some point right before then, something was preventing those fish from going to their natural spot. It was unlikely that something carried its repercussions over into the night preventing the fish from returning home entirely or else there would be further disruptions in the food chain, which according to the fisherman she talked to was seemingly not the case as no other species of fish was impacted by this apparent shortage. If she had to guess, a creature of sorts was the guilty party.

Magical creatures were a strange folk. They were incredibly particular, especially when it came to their natural behaviors and cycles, which of course included their diets. Sometimes, they would become so fascinated with one particular food, that's all they would eat for months. Although no one particular creature came to mind based on that assumption alone, she was almost positive that was the case.

She could picture it now. A sea creature wanders into Astera's waters. For the most part, it looks just like any other part of the ocean it's been in; however, it spots a new kind of fish, one that's unique to Astera's coast. It's never sunk its teeth into its flesh before and is curious to see what it tastes like. It hunts its first one and falls in love. That fish is its new favorite food and it can't get enough of it. Every morning, it sets out to catch its prize. It can't help itself, so it greedily collects all that it can and brings it back to its den. Containing fish is very difficult though underwater, and by the end of the day, a portion of its catch manages to escape back home.

Unfortunately, this messes with the biological clock of the species, so it becomes impossible for fishermen such as her client to reliably catch the fish of their choice. The other fishermen who don't go after that kind in particular don't notice anything off because ultimately, the sea creature's hunt doesn't impact the population significantly enough to disturb the other sea life; however, if Atani let this go on any longer, she feared that it would.

There was a broad subclass of creatures native to salty waters that fit the type of animal Atani believed she was dealing with. For the most part, they lived in similar habitats. Dark, rocky, secluded areas they could isolate themselves in while they gorged on their prey, not likely to be disturbed by anyone else. As much as Atani hated intruding on someone's privacy, she was more than willing to make an exception in this case.

It took a while to navigate Astera's coast, but the elf finally stumbled upon a spot that looked to fit the bill for what she had in mind. Even looking at the surroundings, she could see claw marks etched into the sides of the rocks likely left during high tide.

She gazed up to the sky. If her hypothesis was correct, the sea creature would be making its way back to its den shortly. What fortunate timing.

Atani waited patiently for the suspect to arrive. Eventually, a dark figure slowly began to make its way into the mouth of the rocky enclosure. Something was thrashing in its wake. As it grew closer, Atani saw that all the thrashing was being caused by fish trapped in a net, desperately swimming every which way in a futile attempt to escape. She took special note of the use of a net. This meant the creature was intelligent and likely had opposable thumbs. If she was lucky, it might've even been capable of speech.

And as luck would have it again, it was. Once it came within a safe enough range, Atani used her magic to cause a harmless splash in its path. Only, the splash was a bit larger than intended. The momentum from the waves caused the monster to reel back, loosening its grip in the process, subsequently allowing some of the fish to finally escape and swim to freedom. The creature didn't let too many escape though. It regained its holding of the net.

Once settled, it poked its angry head out of the water and glared at Atani. It accused her of letting his prey get away. Which of course was true, but at least she didn't attack it without warning and take the fish for herself. Other mages wouldn't have let it off so kindly. Its voice sounded gargled and was difficult to hear with clarity, but she could still make out what it was saying.

She apologized for making its rightfully earned fish flee, but explained that she had arrived due to complaints of that very species dwindling in numbers. As a creature of higher intelligence, the culprit understood the ecological impacts of what the elf had explained. Frankly, it didn't know that it had hunted so many since there were always plenty for its taking every morning or so. Still, she didn't know if that would provide enough incentive for the creature to stop its hunting entirely, so she fabricated a lie. She mentioned that the reason fishermen were trying to get these out of the water was because they had the tendency to build up high amounts of toxins. They were unsafe for natural wildlife to consume, and scientists needed to figure out how to stop the toxin build up.

The creature became disgusted and handed over its game to Atani who returned it to her client. In exchange, she was rewarded.

In principle, her tall tale was not unbelievable. The same sort of thing happened all the time in marine life. For predators such as the creature she encountered, the risk for bio-accumulation was higher than most. As a general rule of thumb, this is why humans weren't supposed to eat too much of one type of fish. One type of toxin may accumulate higher in one species than another. It was best to have numerous small traces of toxins than it would be to have copious amounts of a single kind. If the amount was small enough, the effects commonly went entirely unnoticed because each toxin interacted differently with the body. Once they reached a certain point however, that's when eating too much of one thing became a type of health hazard that went far beyond ingesting too much fat or sugar. It was rare, but Atani had seen the effects of such in her time working in the clinic in Athalran. Most of the time, the affected population didn't even know that was a risk in the first place. It was a shame.
