The hot water felt good against the elf's skin as she stood beneath the shower. The warmth seeped deep into her skin, soothing her aching muscles from the confrontation she had with the Cold Colliers. She ran her fingers over top one of the wounds Doctor Gerard had stitched up for her. She let him do his work then, but upon getting home, she added her own magical touch to things. The stitches had done their job in the moment, but for a healer of her caliber, they wouldn't be necessary to retain in the long run. When she arrived back to her place at the inn, she took the bandages off and applied a gentle healing spell. The wounds that would have otherwise healed with scars seamlessly faded to match her natural skin tone. There was not a single trace of her injuries left, but even so, Atani couldn't help but feel a phantom ridge atop her skin.

It didn't even hurt. In fact, it was quite the opposite. It was numb. At first she was afraid it might've been a nerve thing, but quickly dismissed the notion. But then, she reconsidered. It was just a different type of nerves.

As much as she hated to admit it, it was the type of nerves she had been struggling with for a while now. Nothing of the physical kind, thank the gods, but that meant it wasn't something she could easily treat with her healing magic like cuts and bruises she sustained from the Cold Colliers. Whatever this was, she had to treat it with time. It would take delicacy. She knew that, but at the same time, how could she do that with the kind of life she led?

Every time she thought she was getting somewhere, she would do something that would set back her progress ten steps. The moment she discovered she was what Gaeriel called a child of light, it was as if she unlocked a hidden vault of magical essence within herself. She was able to obtain a new level of mastery over her water magic. But then... it backfired. This level of mastery was reflected in her magic's potency, but it was not reflected in her ability to control said magic. It resulted in death. Death that nobody but her was around to witness, so she never had the chance to be legally blamed for anything.

Not that it changed anything. Not to anyone's perception frankly. Light mages killed dark mages frequently, especially on quests that came with high levels of dangers such as the one she took. During quests that were exclusive to S-Ranked mages such as herself, Atani killed pirates that were hazards to Hargeon's waters. These were pirates that were not just known to steal from merchant ships like the majority of pirates that plagued Fiore's seas, but they were ones that ruthlessly killed innocents aboard ships. They stopped at nothing to obtain their precious treasures. Needless to say, nobody would be sorry to hear that they perished at the hands of a mage such as her under the name of justice. In that regard, Atani wasn't worried about word getting out that she had killed. If anything, it would make enemies take her as a healer more seriously. If people heard the context behind her battle though... that would be another story.

Whenever Atani went into a fight, she never went in with the intent to kill. She was a healer at heart for a reason. Peaceful magic resonated with her to a degree that combative magic simply couldn't; however, something changed.

At some point between losing her memory and now, her nature turned from healing to harming. She could still do the former, but she used to be unable to do the latter. Now, she feared that it was possible that without learning to control her magic, her ability to heal would completely fade in preference for the more offensive aspect of her magic that was evidently hidden within her all along. That was what happened with the pirates, and that was what happened with an innocent girl in Bosco. She had used her magic recklessly. It was a reflex. She unleashed mana without thinking. It bent to her subconscious will to inflict damage, and people perished because of it.

Atani's breath shuddered as she remembered the look the Boscosi girl gave her. Her amber-eyed stare was filled with terror as her blood seeped through her dark clothes, creating a stain that was somehow rivaled her black attire. It was the last thing the elf saw before she herself blacked out from the battle.

The mage dug her nails into the spot on her arm where her stitches used to be. Still there was nothing. No feeling. A scar of numbness across her skin.

Stiffly, she let her arm fall to her side. She turned and shut off the shower. The warm water ceased its cascade upon her skin, leaving the elf to face the cold air that now permeated the bathroom. She stepped out of the chamber and wrapped a towel around her body. As she combed her silky blonde hair, she gently channeled mana throughout her body to quickly dry herself-- a beautiful perk of water magic she was glad to have discovered. Though she was more fond of her nature magic in general, even she had to admit that it couldn't do everything the other element could.

After cleaning up, Atani changed into a fresh set of clothes. It was a comfortable pair, one that she wouldn't mind getting dirty while doing who knew what in Baska. Despite how terribly her last job went, Atani still felt as if she should do another. It was hard for her to know if that was the right course of action or not. Should she continue to work, or should she take a break to clear her head? Or rather, should she push through her problems, or should she hope they work themselves out?

The decision did not always present itself as clearly as it should. Although some would call her foolish to simply wait and let fate come to her, doing so has worked out in her favor before. With the current issue at hand, however, Atani did not feel as if doing such would yield favorable results. She couldn't sit there and willfully ignore it, hoping one day someone would come along and magically fix everything for her. Although there were outside factors with which she had no control over at play in her life, there were still a handful with which she did. If she could seize them, she could at the very least try and make the most out of her situation.

Today, that meant scrounging up what little faith she had left in herself and getting herself back in action. Perhaps she could take a small break from the Cold Collier business and distract herself with something else while Dr. Gerard figured the mess out. As the elf slowly convinced herself that was the best course of action to take, she progressed closer and closer to leaving her room. Almost as soon as she pulled on her shoes, there was a knock at the door.

A puzzled expression settled over the girl's face as she looked at the wooden door. No voices came, nor did there any more knocks. Instead, a letter slid itself under the crack between the door and the hardwood floor. The sound of footsteps slowly echoed into nothingness. Curious, Atani grabbed the letter. How could someone have gotten her address already? For a moment, she was afraid someone from the gang had tailed her. Her heart skipped a beat as she turned over the letter to see who it was addressed to. Upon seeing her name written in familiar handwriting however, her fear receded. It was no one more than one of her past clients, Dr. Gerard. He must have gotten her address from the forms she filled out at the clinic. Although her location was temporary, she still had to place something down.

As she read the letter, her heart sank. Though she did not expect her business with the doctor to be over, she had wished she would be able to have had at least a day's long break from the mess she had found herself in, but alas, that was not to be. He needed her help today.

Having already gotten ready for a day of questing, there was nothing holding Atani back from meeting her client. Knowing how anxious of a person Dr. Gerard was when it came to the poisonous water epidemic that plagued Baska, it would be selfish to delay any longer simply to have but a few more minutes of peace. Begrudgingly, Atani tossed the letter in her trashcan and exited her room at the inn.

Her walk to the hospital was brisk. The chilly autumn air bit at her skin as she speedily walked to her destination, but in all honesty, it was an oddly satisfying sensation. It was something she could feel. It was something that could keep her alert. She needed the extra bit of focus when it came to the case at hand.

Dr. Gerard didn't quite explain everything in the letter. From what Atani could decipher of his handwriting though, their meeting was in regards to a cure of sorts. She thought she recalled him having already invented one, but perhaps there were issues with it. Perhaps the Cold Colliers retaliated by releasing a new poison, one far more potent than the last. It was hard to be sure.

Upon meeting Dr. Gerard at the hospital, he began to go further in depth with the cure he discussed. Atani inquired about his pre-existing cure, the one that had already been proven to work. While the doctor agreed that it did in fact remove all negative impacts of the poison, he was worried about its method of distribution. In essence, it boiled down to the fact that the cure he had synthesized was not effective in the given situation that the Cold Colliers managed to poison a large population all at once. If the poison reached the locals, it had the potential to spread like a wildfire. Without a way to distribute the cure expeditiously, there was no telling what kind of damage a highly infected area would cause.

"I want to make the cure airborne," he finally said. Atani furrowed her brows and rested her chin in the palm of her fist. It was possible. The cure as it was, was not injected. Rather, it was ingested. There was no need to penetrate the skin. As long as it could be consumed in some fashion, it would work its magic. The only issue was getting it to that gaseous state.

"From what you've told me about the serum, chemically speaking it should work," she agreed. "My only question is how?"

The doctor who had years upon years of experience under his belt of all things medicine had a plan. That plan was based on his given limitations. Through purely physical means, there was no way he could replicate his serum due to working with a fixed amount of distilled liquid taken from an infected boar. Not only would be gathering more of the sample be dangerous, but it would simply not yield the amount he needed. When scientific methods such as this failed, it was time to resort to magic.

There were items Atani had to retrieve, the first of which was a magic crystal known to duplicate amounts of virtually any item the doctor would be working with; thus, he could increase the volume of the serum. This was rumored to be sold in a nearby shop... though "sold" was a very generous word. Despite its value, the crystal had been sitting in the shop for years. Nobody had found a price high enough to which the shopkeeper agreed to sell it at. It was not on the market.

In all likelihood, it was a treasured piece that the owner displayed at his shop to attract customers, a rare and expensive piece that gave him credibility as a magical salesperson. Atani knew this of him coming into the shop. Even so, she inquired about the item. He gushed over its rarity and prowess, declaring it to be a one-of-a-kind gem priced at nothing short of 5,000,000 Jewels. He mentioned someone had tried to buy it off of him for 10,000,000 in fact, but he saw "ill intent" in their heart and refused to let such a powerful item fall into their hands. What that told Atani was no matter how much money someone offered the guy, he would fabricate an excuse so that he could not accept their offer. Typical.

She played along with his game though. She mentioned how the price was far too high for her and excused herself to browse the other crystals that were more within her price range. The man bid her happy shopping and went to go bother other customers. While he was distracted, she carefully eyed the magic crystal. There were dozens just like it, only but a shade off in color.

The moment nobody was looking her way, she took a crystal that closest resembled the one she needed and swapped them out for one another. She slipped the real one into her pocket and left the store without a word, her elven grace lending her the ability to hardly make a sound.

Did it matter she just stole something from the merchant? Maybe just a little, but Atani didn't feel bad about it. Baska needed this cure. One way or another, they were going to get it.

The second item Atani needed to gather was a simple aerosol can. No tricks were necessary for this errand. All she had to do was pop into the general store which she was already nearby seeing as she was in the shopping district of Baska. Calmly walking into the store as if she not just stolen from one moments before, she began to search for the type of aerosol can the doctor needed. Meanwhile, the owner of this store was drinking some water from behind his place at the counter. At the moment; however, he was out of Atani's sights. Around the time Atani found the proper item though, he made his presence known.

The water supply he had been drinking from probably all day was laced with poison. With a cry of rage, he lashed out at Atani. Aerosol can in hand, she tried to fend him off. During the initial outburst, she took a purely defensive position. Although he made himself an enemy, it was not by his choice. He was still innocent in all of this, and as such she could not hurt him. Shoving him away, Atani made her escape. Leaving the shop, she warned people not to enter. As much as she wanted to, there was little time to explain the complexity of the poison; the people would have to take her word for it. All that mattered was now she knew Dr. Gerard's fears were justified. The violent plague was already spreading to the local population, which meant she had to retrieve the third and final item as soon as possible. Unfortunately, it was the furthest one from the hospital.

Atani had to travel to the source of the polluted water, a lake situated outside of Baska city. There was no telling how frequently or infrequently it became contaminated, but if one thing was for certain, the waters would still be potent enough.

The poison did not substantially decay over time. Considering the amount of pollutants that had been dumped into the lake in the past, it didn't matter when the Cold Colliers last did it. When Atani went to collect a sample now, there would still be enough traces of it left to serve Dr. Gerard's purposes of mass producing his cure. The only thing that was uniquely special about this trip, however, was the fact that it required something more than just the poison itself. For it to be usable in the serum, it had to be enchanted with mana... yet another reason why he requested Atani's help specifically. An S-Ranked mage such as herself had skillful control of her mana. Siphoning her magical energy into a sample of poisoned water should prove to be little challenge for her.

Atani used her water magic to transport the water from the lake into the container she brought. Although she knew it was only dangerous when ingested, she still did not want to take her chances touching the substance. Once she had a substantial enough sample within the container, she knelt down and hovered her hands above the open lid. Mana began to flow.

A blue aura emitted from her hands. It gently bore its rays upon the surface of the water, and soon enough, the liquid contents within the container began to let off a glow with the same blue hue. She was unsure to which extent the doctor needed her to charge the water, but there reached a point where the mana contained within the water outweighed the poisonous contents distributed throughout. It was at that point where Atani ceased her flow of magic and capped the lid onto the sample. She grabbed the container and stood, instantly becoming lightheaded. The siphoning had taken much more out of her than she realized, but there was no time to sit and recover from her loss of mana. The doctor needed these items.

Upon returning to the hospital, she showed the doctor the items she gathered. With her assistance, the two of them worked on perfecting the cure such that it could be distributed in the way the doctor intended. The crystal she had stolen ended up being crushed into a powder in the process, permanently being used to maximize the volume of the serum. Once their work was done, he went and tested it on a patient infected with the violent plague. Thanks to Dr. Gerard's genius, it worked, and Atani was promptly paid for her endeavors.
