*Sigh* ”How did I ever get here?” A heavy air flew around the lonely figure as he sat against the hard stone wall of his new room. Kenzo was no stranger to dungeons, this wasn’t the first time he’d spend a while in one after all, but he certainly never expected to do so in Era’s. It hadn’t been long since he’d spent a couple of weeks assisting the Rune Knights stationed in Fiore’s martial city. Kenzo smiled as the memories flooded him. He didn’t have much to do at the moment either way, the guards had previously stripped him of all his belongings. Not that it was more than his trusty pocket dimension ring after all…

Regardless, Kenzo couldn’t help but smirk as he pondered on his previous visit to the city. As he traveled far and wide through Fiore, trying to get acquainted to the country that saw his mother’s birth, the merc did what mercs did best. The blue haired swordsman had heard rumors about trouble brewing in Era, and what trouble it was. After brawling around with a couple of bad guys, helping solve a rather interesting conspiration and finding out a mole in the Rune Knights, the hot-blooded warrior ended his tour through the city by fighting a dragon.

Yes, one of those fiery salamanders. It was almost as if destined by fate… An omen of what was to come in the following days. The return of the dragons had brought a great calamity upon Earthland and specifically to Fiore. Yet, the mercenary had not been there to repel them. He should have been ready for them, he’d fought one of them before and slain it with a single strike from Masamune, he was destined to. He was ready to defend Blue Pegasus and newfound home. And still, he hadn’t been there. Kenzo had left the country just before the dragons first attacked, and he regretted every single second of it.

The swordsman rubbed his wrists one at a time, trying to pump a little more blood into them after getting the cuffs removed from the trip to Era. He had a thousand opportunities to escape on the way here, more than he could’ve counted. It was clear as the day that the royals were still feeling the aftermath of the draconic invasion even now. Kenzo had seen the disbandment of the Rune Knights with his own eyes, brought down by the greed of aristocracy like many things in the world. And once again, here they were. A bunch of unorganized rabble, definitely scrambled and rapidly put together to resemble a fraction of what the once proud order was. Or at least, that was the impression his captors had given him.

Maybe it was due to his own fame in the country, the reputation of his guild master Alisa Vollan, or perhaps a combination of many factors, but he’d never felt like he was being taken as a serious threat to public order on the way to the dungeon. Hell, his bounty was one of the largest in the land, and he never felt as if they were paying him enough respect. His security detail? Nothing but a bunch of squires and pages. It was honestly sickening.

Perhaps Kenzo ought to punch the wall and escape it there and then just to show them to be more serious next time. He had previously knocked at the bricks with his fist, finding the state of construction quite basic. No magical reinforcement or anything to support the good ol stone walls of the dungeon. He could definitely punch a hole through it without breaking a sweat, but he’d never do that. Not especially after turning himself up. Perhaps that was exactly the reason why they seemed to pay him no mind. Kenzo waited for his trial with the imperial justice dudes, but he knew it was just a matter of time for his release. After all, they knew he was no criminal. They had even ruled against the mercenary’s crimes in the past.

As the thought crossed his head Kenzo puffed his shoulders upwards, trying to burrow himself deeper in the cold stone of the cell. Even if he wasn’t going to spend much time in the cell, he wanted to at least find every bit of comfort he could after all. Kenzo closed his eyes as he tried to remember the day when he read the news in the newspaper. What did it say again?

”People of Fiore vs. Noel Raion – The Cursed Wolf of Blue Pegasus Free After Allegations of Local Fauna Massacre”

The title was as ridiculous as the accusations. It had been a long and arduous job for Noel’s attorney to be able to get him out of the death sentence after all, but justice did actually prevail in the end in favor for the Blue Pegasus wizard. If you asked Kenzo? The whole thing had been nothing but a full load of crap to begin with. Still, here he was. Kenzo had spent a couple of months on the run and laying low through Fiore due to the exact same incident.

It had all started in Port Astera, just a couple of weeks after Advent World as a guild had finally formed. Those were some happy days for the blue haired male. It felt like the first time in quite a while that the mercenary was able to fit somewhere.

He’d become friends with Noel the same day he’d met Finn, Advent World’s previous guild master. While Noel was older than the two of them, one could argue he was younger of heart without a doubt. Couple that with a mysterious magical ritual the gravity mage had undergone, and Noel appeared in front of Kenzo transformed into a completely different person. He’d turned from a washed up, substance addicted old man nearing a mid-life crisis to a fresh, k-pop start looking fella with a mid-life crisis. Oddly enough, the look fit his character even better than before. One way or another, Noel’s appearance wasn’t of much importance for the events that unfolded to turn them into two of the most wanted people in the country.

Finn had previously assigned them with the task of working as sort of mediators between Advent World and Kazimir’s new guild Phoenix… something. Feather… I think? Both guilds had established their home base in the same region of Fiore, and Finn wanted to keep peace for the moment with them at least. For that reason, Kenzo and Noel had been assigned to Port Astera for a couple of guild errands, not much stuff. The situation that spiraled out of control came afterwards.

Kenzo and Noel found a couple of urgent quests posted within the quest board in the central plaza, the city hall, the docks, the market, the church entrance… anywhere you could imagine. The general feel of the port city was one of fear and sadness. All related to the same issue. Apparently, it had been a couple of months since the fishermen had encountered a new subspecies of sea monsters that terrorized the coasts.

More than a dozen of experienced fishermen had lost their lives to the beasts, and a couple of merchant vessels had been devoured in the spot. It was a specimen that had only existed in old sea shanties and marine tales but had recently become all too real for the port dwellers. The beast would relentlessly attack without mercy and unannounced from the depths of the sea. Legends said they only terrorized the deep waters of the ends of the world seas, but the legends had started to eat every John and Will that tried to go fishing for food those days.

Kenzo himself had even become friends of a recently widowed inn keeper that told him the whole story. Her husband had gone out early in the morning to fish, only to have his wooden leg returned half-chewed.

It was part the kindness the couple had shown the Bellan man in his stay in Port Astera and part the ridiculously juicy monetary rewards that came with the job of hunting the monsters. A merc has to get paid to work after all. Either way, Kenzo agreed to hunt the beasts as long as they paid up front. Yet, it seemed like he wasn’t the only one with the same idea.

Noel had spent a couple of days meeting with an old dude that taught him how to fish. Probably part of his mid-life identity crisis shenanigans. Still, he’d jumped ahead of the warrior and hunted one of the beasts a day before. In the young-looking old man’s words, they were nothing more than overgrown fish. Bigger than average octopi. Kind of an understatement, Kenzo would soon realize after he accompanied his pal the next day for round two.

They parted sail early in the morning, stealing Kenzo’s sworn enemy fishing boat without her noticing and sailing to find the beasts. Although the boat stealing story would have to come another day, it was nearly of no consequence compared to what happened afterwards. Finding the kraken spawns was nothing too difficult in the end, they found the two Advent World themselves after all.

The ensuing battle could have been described with a single word: Chaos. Kenzo had seen Noel fight before in the past, but it was clear from the instant the more experienced mage fired his first attack that shit was really going to get serious. The sea monster was unlike anything the Bellan warrior had ever seen before. Had it not been for Noel he’d definitely end up falling to the sea, signaling an end to his struggle. Yet, the two comrades fought and triumphed, killing the beast for good.

However, this was only the beginning. It was almost as if a spark had been lit between the two of them. A spark that signaled the start of what could only be kind of described as “a race”. You see, it appeared that the killing of the alpha octopus brought along a wave of its kin, ready to make tiny humans pay for its death.

Yet, the Advent World members took it as a challenge, taking care of each and every sea beast that came along. Almost as if trying to best each other to see who caught the biggest fish, Kenzo and Noel definitely reduced the marine species near to extinction…. But it was a good thing, right? That meant no more fishermen were dying after all. Even better, the excess octopus’ flesh had brought up an economic renaissance that Port Astera most definitely needed. Festival season was nearing the resort city of Hosenka, and that meant Takoyaki demand was going to skyrocket. So, everyone wins then, right?

Wrong. Kenzo opened his eyes once again before memories of the stuff that happened after that invaded him. The cheery laughter and partying that both him and Noel had done after their small fishing spree finished almost echoed through his memories as the signal of the happy times ending. After all, there had been shadows swirling around Advent World that were plotting against the guild of adventurers.

”God damn it, how much longer am I gonna stay in this place?” Kenzo huffed as he stood up in a jolt, shaking his head around as he tried to focus on other matters for the moment. He had never been much of an emotional person, but he’d gotten to know what betrayal was. His journey had brought him all through the world, and he’d learned the pains of people you cared about dying because of a backstabber.

The mere thought of something like that happening with his friend Finn Mertens brought a chill to his spine. Kenzo had pondered the idea before, wondering who could have a grudge against their former guild master. There was way more to Fiore’s politics than first appeared at first glance. He was living proof of it.

After all, the news of his bounty hadn’t taken long to reach him soon after leaving Port Astera. Kenzo had traveled to Baska city after his duties with Phoenix Feather and the coastal city were taken care of. He had heard about the nascent city, busting with life ever since the Rune Knights had disbanded and decided to become a town of mercenaries and adventurers. It was obvious that it was appealing to him after all; Kenzo had way more in common with people like them than your usual run of the mill mage that joined an organized guild in Fiore.

For that reason, he felt the need to visit Baska and see what it had to offer for himself. Yet, when he first arrived at the city and saw his face, jawbone, and all, plastered all around the wanted boards of the central town he thought it was all a joke. Quite a bad taste one if he might add, considering how ugly they had drawn him on the poster. They didn’t even draw him facing with his good side! Alas, that was not what was important. The ridiculously high sum of money offered for him was a problem.

More than two million Fioran jewels were being offered for the capture of Kenzo Valens, The Espada. How that nickname caught on, the blue haired swordsman had no clue, but he couldn’t help but honestly like it. His newly coined epithet aside, there was no real explanation as to why he had become a fugitive man in the couple of bounty boards of Baska.

All of the wanted posters had been consistently ripped apart by would be bounty hunters, meaning the decree or the sentence that came along them was not left behind for him to read. What was worse, Kenzo was now in a town full of people that had previously been law enforcers, ones that had gone out of a job shortly before one may add. The combination was certain to cause some trouble. What if some stupid upstart bounty hunters took Kenzo’s bounty serious? He’d definitely need to kick some ass then, and there would be no turning back.

Forget about clearing his name. If he ever fought back any bounty hunters and they lived to tell the tale it would only worsen the situation. Kenzo definitely needed to find out what the hell was going on.

The male tried to blend as best as he could with the locals. He was lucky that he’d previously spent a couple of weeks in Baska, helping one of the local merchants establish his base of operations as the recent influx of people coming to live in the city meant an increase in demand for goods. Not only that but considering Baska’s strategic location between two of Fiore’s most important regions meant that a lot of merchants and trading routes were starting to cross through the city. Thankfully, it appeared that the efforts of the mercenary were to bear fruit now that he was in trouble.

Kenzo sent a note to his merchant friend, asking to meet him at one of Baska’s bars that littered the outskirts. It was a risky move for the warrior since he could have easily been betrayed. Yet, it paid off. The merchant had remained loyal to the merc’s efforts in the past and met with him at the requested place. Even better, he offered what Kenzo was looking for: information. Apparently, someone had framed Kenzo’s efforts of trying to protect the fishermen of Astera as first-degree charges of mass extinction against local marine species.

The situation was definitely dangerous for the mercenary. He’d accrued somewhat of a reputation for himself by then, so his face was becoming more and more recognizable. It was for that reason that he decided to retire from public life. Instead of trying to investigate exactly who’d framed him for those crimes, Kenzo decided to take some time off in Fiore’s countryside. And there was no better place to do that than Marigold City.

It was a rather peculiar town, full of flowery yards and grassy hills. If he weren’t trying to avoid prying eyes, he might have even enjoyed the relaxation that the atmosphere provided. Still, his retirement was not completely uneventful. It might have seemed like an unrelated event in the grand scope of things, but its consequences would have a longer lasting effect in Kenzo’s future. One regular day the Bellan heard the most interesting of rumors.

Apparently, the elusive Penumbral Guard guild had stationed within town, deep within the forests of Marigold and away from prying eyes. Yet, there were rumors floating around that a fearless, evil wizard had decided to attack the guild. One Kenzo would later come to know as Wizard Lord Odin Morningstar.

It had been a while since he felt such a rush of excitement cursing through his body. Even better, the fact that he was a Wizard Lord probably meant that he had a sizeable bounty on his head. One that could help him offset the misunderstanding that his own bounty posed. However, just as Kenzo finished preparations to hunt for this so-called Odin fella, Kenzo received a letter that would change everything… It came from none other than his guild master, Finn Mertens.

The contents weren’t that long, but the meaning behind those words was more than clear. Finn was in danger, and he wanted to keep Advent World away from it. Even while the letter casually appointed Kenzo as Advent World’s new Guild Master, the warrior new things wouldn’t be so simple. Finn was in danger.

The ensuing days were a fight against the clock. Kenzo was sure of it, even if Finn hadn’t explicitly talked about any such thing. Luckily, the male was able to track down the mailman that had delivered the letter. For the moment those were his only clues after all, Finn had definitely delivered the letter with someone, so the only thing he needed to do was follow its path in reverse order. Yet, the more time passed and the closer he got to his friend, the more nervous Kenzo felt, the more his heart ached with anxiety, until finally… he found Finn. Dead.

The lifeless remains of the once Guild Master of Advent World sinking in the middle of nowhere, the only thing left to speak of his demise was a bloodied Durendal half stuck on the sands of the lake’s basin. Kenzo boiled with rage, even more as he was unable to direct it at someone or something. He had no idea what had hunted Finn, but the Bellan male swore upon Finn’s blade that he wouldn’t rest until he found the culprits. For now, the only thing that was certain was that he was officially a guild master.

Still, Kenzo knew nothing about leading a guild, or much about Fiore for that matter. Yet, the news continued flooding without stop before he could even sit down and analyze his next move. One after another, the members of Advent World started disappearing without a trace. The proud guild of fighters that had torn through the Grand Magic Games a couple of months before were being hunted and chased like prey.

One after another they stopped sending signs of life, which only helped to further the notion that Finn’s death hadn’t been an isolated affair. In the end, only Kenzo and Noel were the ones to survive. But if they meant to stay that way, they needed to find new allies, and a new place to call home. After discussing it between the two of them, there was only one logical answer left. Noel was the person in charge of organizing the meeting, but it was Kenzo that met with none other than the Wizard Saint Alisa Vollan herself high in the middle of the mountains of Myras. Their meeting was a friendly one, with both mages sharing the sorrow of their mutual friend’s death. But for now, new guildmates.

Days seemingly went by as Kenzo spent his time impatient, wondering when he’d be able to leave Era’s dungeon. The only way to tell how much time had passed was due to how on time the two meals he was allowed to eat came. The person in charge of handing the jailed man’s meals was a young Rune Knight that had definitely pulled the short stick for his Page training. While there were many tasks one could be assigned to take care of as a page, tending to the dungeons of Era was definitely one that Kenzo didn’t believe to be of the better ones.

Still, it was the young guy’s inexperienced that allowed the Bellan mercenary to receive regular updates on the status of his trial. It seemed like everything was following its course, and it was simply a matter of time before Kenzo was released. There was word that there wouldn’t be a need for a trial, considering a precedent had been set by Noels. Add to that Alisa’s pressure as one of Fiore’s Wizard Saints and Kenzo was virtually a free man. Yet, weeks went by, and if he had counted his meals correctly, even a month.

The longer he spent time in his cell, the more Kenzo’s mind state started suffering. He had blocked away all thoughts about his time spent out of the country for as long as he had been in Fiore, but he could only postpone the inevitable for so long. After all, he’d been able to create something of a resemblance of a new life after joining Blue Pegasus.

The only things he’d heard about the dragon invasion came from the news that his guild master regularly sent him while he was away, but while he was glad to hear that the guild was intact and the members in the hall were all safe, that still didn’t put his mind at ease.

The reason? A certain free-spirited, lighthearted paladin. Kenzo had met Rania under interesting circumstances. The swordsman was unaware if this was a ploy by Alisa or merely a happy coincidence that stemmed from guild traditions, but the first task Kenzo was appointed to was tagging along one of the guild’s new members as they journeyed throughout the country to take care of some tasks. Kenzo was skeptical of the idea at first, but the adventure hadn’t turned to completely suck.

On the contrary, Kenzo and Rania had seemed to develop quite an interesting relationship. They had chemistry ever since they met, and the girl was someone that definitely amused the generally laid-back warrior. She was witty, sharp minded, compassionate, and brave, and soon enough Kenzo found himself caring about her in a way he hadn’t experienced in a long time.

While their adventure came close to an end in Hosenka, the male had definitely started developing feelings for her. Not that he’d ever openly express them under normal circumstances. While the male had spent his youth fighting for his life in the Colosseum of Bellum’s capital, fought against beasts that would make older men shit their pants and seen a life’s worth of the terrors and gruesome realities of war along the world, the simple matter of falling in love definitely terrified him.

And so, the longer he spent his time locked up in the dungeons of Era, the more time he spent remembering the happy moments they’d shared in Hosenka that seemed so long ago. After all, Rania had left Fiore a couple of weeks before Kenzo even did, simply stating that she was ready to take a pilgrimage.

It was natural, considering she was a priestess, so the two of them bid their farewells as Kenzo stayed with a bittersweet smile. Her trip wasn’t supposed to take much time, and Kenzo eagerly awaited the day she returned. However, it had now passed almost a year since they last saw each other.

For a while, the blue haired swordsman had forgotten all about the unfinished business he still had with whoever had plotted his guild’s destruction. The black-haired girl had brought upon that effect on him. Yet, it seemed like if perfectly timed by the gods, just after Rania left for her pilgrimage Kenzo at last received a clue that would rekindle the embers of his pending revenge. Alisa had summoned the warrior in her office in order to discuss their next plan of action.

Kenzo had previously infiltrated a criminal organization while he was still stationed in Hosenka, learning that the matter of his own bounty had been orchestrated by a kingpin that held a grudge against the members of Advent World. After all, they had bet an entire fortune on Daeva Eye winning by a landslide, only for their gamble to be upset by Advent World’s performance.

In a weird kind of relieving manner, it appeared like their hunch was correct. The newest intelligence that Blue Pegasus’ network had acquired pointed to a much larger organization, a much darker one. It was an obscure group of powerful and evil people that held operations in various countries around the world. Their existence was nothing but a mere rumor, no one alive had seen or met one of its members.

Yet, all evidence suggested that they had existed for centuries, created nations, controlled wars, caused innumerable disasters, and shaped the land to fit their own agendas. Kings and dynasties had been put in place and dispose of at the organization’s whim. And for a strange reason, Finn had caught the attention of such a dangerous group of individuals. What he’d done to cross them was still a mystery, but at long last, Kenzo had a new objective in sights. The destination? The turmoiled borders of Stella and Bosco where the political strife seemed to be the organization’s newest objective.

The mercenary pondered whether to write a letter for Rania or not. He wasn’t sure how long he’d be out of the country, and she had no idea of the recent developments, so what would she think if he suddenly disappeared before she returned? Alisa had promised Kenzo she wouldn’t speak a word about their secretive investigation, trying to keep the guild safe in case things came to worst. As such, he couldn’t ask his guild master to tell her where he’d gone even if she knew.

In the end, Kenzo decided on not writing anything. They weren’t even a thing, right? Maybe he was just being all awkward and made up a story in his head when she didn’t think much about their outings. No need to embarrass himself needlessly after all. Better yet, Rania’s pilgrimage was on the way to Bosco, so he might as well surprise her by finding her there. He would be able to find a suitable place to tell her about his plans if he found her after all. With that in mind, the swordsman packed his things and left in search for more answers. Unknowingly, Kenzo left Fiore at the worst possible moment.

The travel through the Fioran countryside had been basically uneventful. The Bellan’s Dhuilin was certainly an impressive beast. He had mounted countless horses in the past as it was expected from a mercenary that fought multiple wars in multiple sides, but none came even closer to the impressive speed and endurance that Dhuilin possessed. Kenzo had won his stood by becoming champion of a tournament in Baska, and it was at moments like this that he was grateful for entering the low-key competition.

It had only been a couple of days, but he was making an impressive pace to Bosco. While his days of travel were peaceful, everything ended as he was already deep inside Seven territory. A message from the guild arrived. Dragons had invaded Fiore and were attacking the land. There had been sighting even before Kenzo left the country. Heck, Phoenix Feather had been wiped from the face of the earth by an eldritch dragon.

The prospect of a draconic invasion definitely weighed heavily in the mind of the warrior itching for a fight. Yet, his guild master’s orders were clear as day. He was to proceed with his mission. Blue Pegasus would take care of dragons.

When Kenzo arrived at the place where Rania’s pilgrimage was supposed to converge, he looked for her without success. He knew time was not exactly a resource he had to spare, but he still couldn’t help but feel restless without knowing whether she was safe or not. The only information he got regarding her whereabouts was a message from the guild that told Kenzo that everyone was safe. While it didn’t leave him without worries, it at least reminded him what his original objective was. He decided for the moment to trust the word of the guild and the girl herself. After all, the two of them had gone adventuring before, so he knew how capable she was of defending herself.

Kenzo spent the next couple of months mingling and involving himself with the different factions of the Boscosi civil war. His status as a mercenary proved to be the perfect disguise in a land embroiled in civil strife after all. It finally allowed him to gather enough information to unravel the mystery behind the evil organization. Funnily enough? It pointed back to the Grand Crocus Cathedral. It was finally time for the Bellan male to return to his second home. What new adventures waited for him in Fiore remained only to be seen. For the moment, it was being quite a slow adventure. Just as he was spending his fifth week inside the Era Dungeon, the sounds of rustling keys clinging against the iron bars of his now familiar cell woke him up.

”Get up, you’re free now. Someone from your guild is here for you”

Kenzo walked slowly towards the exit as he traced the edge of the sharp bone fang protruding from his cheek with his tongue. The warrior cracked his neck and arms as a slight smirk appeared in his face.
