Atani

Atani's mission to put a stop to any and all pirates who came in Hargeon's waters came to an abrupt halt as Blue Pegasus began to prepare for the Easter festivities. She of course had been preoccupied with her own set of tasks, what with being part of the guild and all. It was important to make sure that the Easter festival was enjoyable for all attendees, but especially for the children who would be partaking in the egg hunt in Hargeon Square. It was expected of the guild to go above and beyond for this sort of thing. And for Atani, that translated to probably not making a ruckus with capturing more pirates.

She admittedly was not the most stealthy of mages when it came to dealing with the sea scoundrels. With no offensive spells in her repertoire to deal with the pirates, she had to resort to rather mundane methods of dealing with them and their ships. Unfortunately, that meant using brute force, be it with surrounding items or her own melee attacks. That was something she needed to change, for both her sake and the sake of keeping the peace within Hargeon, but to do that she had to become stronger. Or... She had to gain a new tool. Her mind had been set on becoming stronger through her magic, but it appeared for now that would have to wait. With the festivities done and over with, the pirates were doubtlessly at large once more. There was little time to waste. Training her magic to become stronger would just take too much time. The most she could do at the moment was generate relatively small things with her water that had no use other than functional supplements-- A bubble she could breathe underwater with, a whip she could extend.

But it was a whip she could not deal any damage with, though she had a feeling that would not change anytime soon. When she could utilize nature magic, all she could do was grow plants to aid her in a similar fashion her water magic did. That, and of course heal wounds. But now... ?

Atani knew how to channel her magic into healing spells. For her, it was no difficult task. She knew the exact process to do it; it was the same process taught to every elven user of healing magic regardless of the element. And yet, she still could not get it to work with water even though it was supposed to be the element she was best aligned with. Of course, that was all according to Gaeriel. The elf girl was talented, she knew that, but she had also been wrong about her ability to use nature and light magic. Yet, in the end, she was indeed correct about utilizing the element of water. Even with her unlocking these powers though, Atani was doubtful she would gain further clarity by returning to Athalran and speaking to Gaeriel once more. They would probably just put her through training again and claim they were right all along. That was something she was sure she could do on her own.

But of course, all of that took time. Being a mage and living in Hargeon, she had to carefully carve out the time to train like she wanted to. In the meantime, she still had to make money. Dealing with pirates in Hargeon was good for the safety of sailors and all, but part of the reason she took on these tasks-- that were arguably not ideal for her at the moment-- was that they paid a decent sum of jewels.

Though decent was putting it lightly. Decent money was what she gained from doing menial tasks such as babysitting or helping build a boat. No, the reward she gained from eliminating genuine threats to Hargeon was far greater than that. It was something she could make a living off of and fund her own travels. Actually, come to think of it, there was the potential she already had enough to get herself a decent weapon of sorts.

The elf went to check her savings. She was unaware of the amount she had accrued over the years. All she knew was that she had enough to pay rent and live comfortably with sufficient food and drinks. She often set aside just enough money to do what she absolutely needed, but hardly gave a second glance to her personal funds. So, it came as quite a surprise to see how much money she had earned over the course of just the past month alone. Even with the 300,000 she was in debt to Zane for the book, she still had plenty for the sort of weapon she was in the market for with even some leftover. She could splurge if she wanted, though she was reluctant to do so.

She knew she had training in both the bow and dagger from her time in Athalran. She had slightly more aptitude for the bow and arrow, but that did not mean she could go ahead and a large sum of money on something nice when it could end up getting roughed up in battle from inexperience. Because, even though she knew how to use a bow, she did not perfectly know her way around it. If she brought it to jobs, there was no doubt in her mind that it could end up becoming damaged.

Pocketing what she was willing to spend, Atani got ready to set out for her trip to the weapons store. But first, she decided to stop by the request board at her guild hall. She knew how to use a bow. There was little warming up she needed to do before setting out on a quest. Though she expected to be rough around the edges, there was no doubt in her mind her skills would be good enough to defeat the pirates.

Just as she thought, there was yet another band of pirates who needed to be brought to justice. And of course, the reward was quite lucrative. In fact, it could even cover the cost of her new bow entirely if the prices in Hargeon hadn't wavered since last she went browsing for weapons. There was one shop in particular she had heard good things from, though it was not yet one she had set foot in. The mage had actually heard of it rather recently, and at the time she wasn't in the market for a bow. But now, she finally had the funds and motive to see it for herself.

Upon entry, Atani could already see why so many people spoke highly of it. It did not sell a great variety of weapons, but from what it did sell, they all appeared to be of good quality. For the most part, there were only bows, swords, and daggers available. The other weapon types were few and far between, so it appeared that this shop mostly appealed to hunters, both of the literal and magical kind. There was one bow in particular that caught her eye. It was crafted in the style of the Wood Elves, a style she knew well from her time in the woodland city of Athalran.

"You have a nice eye."

Atani looked at who spoke to her. By his attire, it seemed to be the shop owner. Without a response from her, he continued to discuss the item.

"It's a genuine elven bow, though I'm guessing you can tell that already."

She nodded her head. There were merchants who would try and pawn off a fake for someone who was not knowledgeable about elven weapons, but Atani was not among one of those ignorant persons. Not that she could blame them. They didn't grow up around elven culture like she did. If they saw something that didn't look like the typical wooden bow, then it was reasonable for them to assume it wasn't made by humans. She just wished they would be a little more judicious in their analysis. If the bow was truly elven, it wouldn't be sold for as expensive as the knockoffs unless they were tied with powerful effects.

"It's reasonably priced as well," she noted. The shopkeeper beamed with pride. It evidently was not everyday when someone recognized his expertise in weapon analysis. Once again, Atani could see why people liked this shop so much. It was perfect for mages and adventurers like her. After some more discussion, she learned that the bow was enchanted. It was not necessary to use a quiver. Rather, all she had to do was draw back the string and direct her mana into the weapon. It would act as a conduit of sorts and generate an arrow of the nature element to then fire like any ordinary arrow. That piqued Atani's interest quite well. She had been worried about keeping arrows in place if she needed to go underwater, but there was no such need. She did not need to hear anything more. The bow was sold.

Atani gripped the bow in the palm of her left hand. With her right, she pulled gently on the string. It fit her nimble fingers well. But then again, that was to be expected. These sorts of things were designed by elves for elves. Though their physiologies were very similar, there were slight differences here and there for their precise builds. Those small differences could be felt in the design of weapons such as this one. Though she knew this bow was genuine based on appearance, the feel of it in her hands confirmed it. She would definitely be coming back to this shop in the future if she ever needed another weapon.

Now, onto the ship. The one in question for the request was yet another that decided to foolishly dock near the shore-- The hidden shore, specifically. That was at least what Atani liked to call it. It was a spot far away from the typical docks of Hargeon. It was unguarded by Rune Knights or law enforcement of any kind due to the difficulty of situating groups there from the rocks. That, and of course it was relatively unknown. Atani only stumbled across the location in her attempts to get away from civilization in Hargeon. As it turned out, the pirates had discovered that location far before she did.

Although the location was now known to be a spot where pirates could potentially be attacked by mages such as her, there were such few spaces in Hargeon that could provide a sufficient amount of cover for pirates. As a result, they ended up being forced to choose that sort of location to dock. After all, if they docked their boats at the main port, they would be discovered and arrested immediately; if they were recognized well enough to have a request put out, the port masters would doubtlessly recognize them as well.

Atani squinted as she peered at the pirates aboard the ship. She studied them from afar at her hiding spot. From the looks of it, they were among the careless type. Drinking and celebrating their successful plunder, they were clearly distracted. She didn't even have to be sneaky about this. The ship was anchored close enough to shore that she could sprint at the ship by running on water. The pirates wouldn't be able to load the cannons at a fast enough speed with the state they were in. If they happened to use muskets, their aim would be off as well. With her speed, she was confident she could infiltrate the ship without a problem.

So, Atani started her attack. Using the spell she had mastered weeks ago, she ran atop the surface of the water. All the while, the elf kept her bow at the ready. The pirates saw her coming-- she expected that. The surprise she brought along with their drunken nature did not mix well in their favor, just she also anticipated. Their reaction times were too slow. In no time at all, she had reached the ship and launched herself onto the top of the deck.

Some pirates, she hit with her bow and arrow-- she did not use lethal force or aim for any vital spots. Rather, she hit them just enough to incapacitate them. The other pirates, she didn't need to use the bow and arrow. Instead, she was able to knock them out or shove them over the rail into the water. By the time she was finished, the pirates wouldn't be bothering anyone again anytime soon. She was able to retrieve the stolen treasure with ease as well and reach land with the cargo. However, much to her surprise, there was a little stowaway flying lemur among it. Even as she went to return the treasure, it didn't seem to want to leave her side.
