Mikajia
Many weeks had passed since Mikajia had dealt with the cathedral and the spirits which frequently made the catacombs their home. His last expedition beneath the church had went well. None of the spirits were very strong, but there had been an excessive number of spirits to deal with. His job was made exponentially easier due to the fact that all of them were benevolent spirits. But that wasn’t necessarily something he was all that pleased over. Mikajia was someone that loved challenging himself with greater and greater foes. So, though the job was easy, he was far from happy with the lack of a challenge.

His job prior to that one though, dealing with a different cathedral, had proved much more entertaining to him, pitting him against some very powerful creatures. Unfortunately though, he had succumbed to an extreme amount of bloodlust, and had all but completely blacked out. It had felt like he was watching the whole experience through someone else’s eyes. Watching his body fly through the halls and rooms, killing every single thing that passed by. The blood surging in his ear drums, the excited bumps crawling over his skin as he encountered powerful foe after powerful foe, and the predatorial grin that covered his face when finally faced with the strongest creature.

He couldn’t begin to think of a way to describe how his blood felt like it was cheering in adulation at the thought of defeating a worthy foe. His eyes widened in excitement, his power surging as the final creature stepped forward. He had defeated it, but not without taking a few injuries himself, the first time actually that any creature in the catacombs had been powerful enough to land a blow. This one though, had actually managed to land several hits on him.

Mikajia
There were a couple injuries that required some attention, but most of them were just some simple cuts or bruises, nothing life threatening. With that beast defeated, he made his way back out and took his payment, dealing with a rather irate priest all the while. Though he wasn’t angry at the man in the slightest, considering it was his insults and slander that led Mikajia to discover his newly awakened Daemon blood. Once discovering that, he spent a good deal of time researching everything he could about Daemons. That research led him to discover that he would eventually come to actually be able to wield a portion of the Daemon’s power for himself, so long as he accepted the blood running through his veins, the good and the bad.

Discovering this information out made him happier than he had been in a very long time. Others would probably view this as a curse, but not him. He took the information as a gift, the blood as a godsend, and swore to utilize this power to the best of his ability. Mikajia had also discovered a kind of passive power that he possessed, thanks to the blood. It was something like an aura, seeping into the air and people around him, making them innately fear everything about him. He certainly didn’t despise this ability, but he figured there would be times when it would be a nuisance. Thankfully, he also found a way to suppress that ability, which in turn allowed him to take his last job with the church, and finish it without a hitch.

During his last job, he also learned that the priest’s suspicions over Mikajia and his Daemon blood had been looked in to, and thanks to him keeping his aura suppressed, he was seen as nothing more than a typical mage, and the previous priest’s concerns were brushed aside, so Mikajia would be able to continue working with the church if he wanted.

Mikajia
Mikajia honestly couldn’t care less about whether he was in good standing with the church, as he innately despised most religions, but he was also no fool. He knew perfectly well how difficult his life could become if the church actively pursued him and sought his destruction because of his blood. And he also knew that something like that was all too possible an outcome. So for now, Mikajia was playing nice, doing all he could to stay on the church’s good side. There of course, would come a time when he would bring everything to an end.

When that happened, he would relish the sight of all the churches and cathedrals being burned to the ground. He would raze the earth, and from on high, watch the land be born anew from the ashes. And what a lovely sight that would be. A small grin covered his lips as he felt his eyes slowly burn a deep crimson before settling back to their normal color. The letter he read was nothing new to Mikajia, simply detailing that the situation beneath the catacombs required his attention again. From what they could tell, there were only a handful of dark spirits making the place their home; most of them being simple benevolent spirits.

However, from his experiences, benevolent spirits could very easily become dangerous when given too much time to soak up the negative energy surrounding them. And to keep from letting the situation develop into something he couldn’t easily deal with himself, he always purged the benevolent spirits too, deciding that was the safest route. Mikajia wasn’t so much worried about the destruction and chaos they would cause, that was perfectly fine by him, it was the fact that the church would waste no time in dragging his name through the mud, and taking jobs would become much more difficult.

Mikajia
So playing nice with the church was really his only option for now. However, he could tell, day by day, his name was gaining more reputation. Bad reputation, yes, but reputation nonetheless. He was becoming known as a ruthless man, that didn’t hesitate to kill, amongst other things. However, he was also known as someone that always got the job done, and was always very thorough. And there were more than enough employers around that would be happy to work with someone with his level of infamy, simply due to the fact that they could count on him to finish his job.

It wouldn’t be too much longer till he could completely be himself while around the members of the church and not worry about any repercussions. He hated feeling like he had no choice but to play nice, but that was the reality of the situation. He could of course, just do what he wanted, and kill them all, but that would only serve to cause problems, and make it take longer to reach his goal. That was something he refused to let happen. So, for now, he had to accept his position.

All he really needed to do was to gain one more rank. Once he was an S-Rank mage, many of the confines and restrictions surrounding him would fall away, and he would be free to do as he pleased. At least for the most part. There were still ranks further to climb, and he had every intention of making it to the top like only a handful of people had ever managed in all the generations of mages within all of Fiore. The renowned Z-Rank. That was his ultimate goal, and absolutely nothing would get in his way, least of all the ever so arrogant and prejudice church.

Mikajia
He figured he had stalled long enough, gathered his belongings, then made his way out of his loft and towards the cathedral. It didn’t take him long to reach the church, and once outside, was quickly greeted by the priest he had worked with a few times now. The man greeted him with a warm smile, which Mikajia returned, but of course his was fake, but very believable. He welcomed Mikajia, and wasted no time in explaining everything in full detail. The letters always contained a brief explanation, but always left out just enough details that whoever took the request still had to actually speak with the priest.

Seemed innocent enough, but Mikajia knew it was their way of maintaining control, as well as making sure they could keep an eye out on any potential new recruits. After all, the church could be very persuasive, and very influential. He was sure they had managed to use their impressive influence and control to make life either very comfortable, or very difficult for some people, depending on their willingness to cooperate with the church. Mikajia was sure his time was coming soon enough, and he would need to make his choice, and either stand with or against the church.

And when he finally did make his choice, which would of course be against them, his life was sure to become much more interesting. He was sure there would be no end to the assassins they would send after him. Fitting isn’t it? A supposed place of honor, faith, and fellowship; proclaiming to follow the light, but wouldn’t hesitate to seek out and kill those that beset themselves against them. Some would say he was deluded, or foolish for believing such horrible things about the church, but he would simply call those people blind fanatics.

Mikajia
His work in the catacombs went by with no real issues, much like last time. There were a few spirits that possessed a bit more fight in them, but none that posed any significant challenges for him. They were mostly looking for a way to move on. His method allowed them to do that of course, though it was through a method that most looked down upon. At least when dealing with benevolent spirits. Most usually tried to cleanse them and help the spirits peacefully move on, but that always took a significantly longer time to deal with than Mikajia was willing to spend on this job.

He had gotten several letters over the months since starting his work with the church, either threatening him for purging the spirits rather than cleansing them, or simply calling him every degrading name imaginable. He honestly couldn’t care less what anyone thought of his methods, and would set each letter ablaze after reading them. Mikajia would laugh while reading the letters, imagining some crone or uptight snob writing the letters to him, somehow thinking their words would make him reconsider his methods. Honestly though, if the church really cared all that much about Mikajia’s method of choice for clearing out the catacombs, then why would they keep employing his services?

That was a question that these fools obviously never considered. The church clearly had the money and means to employ whomever they wished for these problems, yet they never once declined Mikajia’s services. Though that should make it obvious that what he was doing wasn’t wrong in the eyes of the church, and thereby should be fine with them as well, that was apparently far too difficult of a conclusion for these folks to reach. It didn’t really bother him that much though, he even used the letters as a way to entertain himself when he had nothing to do, and would be sitting bored in his loft.

Mikajia
It took Mikajia a little over an hour to finish this job up, barely longer than the last time, which meant it was also equally boring. He exited the catacombs, greeting the priest with a convincing fake smile once more. He explained his job was finished, and that they shouldn’t have to worry about spirits for a little while at least. The priest thanked him for his exemplary work once more, then handed over the payment. He nodded in return, keeping the pleasant smile on his face as he accepted the payment then turn and left. He hardly saw how this was considered ‘exemplary’ work, considering how dull it was.

Mikajia figured the man was being overly friendly for some reason, most likely trying to butter him up before the request was made. When that time came, he was going to relish in watching their reactions when he revealed exactly what he was, and where his loyalties lie. But for now, he’d continue playing the dutiful mage, in service to the church. He emptied the jewels into his own bag before ripping up the one the priest had given him, then tossing the shreds aside. He wandered the streets, his mind lost in thought as he slowly made his way back to his loft.

Once back at his loft, he saw yet again, a pile of letters left at his door, the same as all the other times. At this point, he figured whomever these people were, that they were watching him. Waiting for him to take a job with the church yet again, only to bombard him with more letters illustrating their displeasure with his methods. He just grabbed them up, tossed them in the fireplace, and lit a match. He really didn’t feel much like reading that shit again.
