Kaz made his way through the streets of Astera. The market was alive with the sound of scuffling feet and price bidding. Fishermen sloshed their catches of the day on tables ready for the market. People called out to any who walked by, enticing them to come and spend money on their offer and pay no mind to any others. Every crevice was filled with the scent of bakeries, money, fish, and leathers all blending into one another and fluctuating dominance the more you traversed the walkways.

The people were mostly foreign traders having traveled from far and wide to sell their goods here. Commerce was one of the major draws of the city and it showed. People of all styles walked the streets. From those who wore tailored suits to ones fresh of the early morning sailing venture.

It was a sight that pleased Kaz but he was in somewhat unfamiliar territory. He was used to leading people on missions. To take on jobs that came before him. But now he had to wander in and find his own path. To show what good works the guild could do if called upon. He never expected his path would take him to be somewhat of a politician.

He just watched the people move on by for a moment. Contemplating what all he would need to do. Things slowly came into perspective. Nothing really had to change at all. Lead by example. Do good work for people. That’s all it was about. He just had to get in there and do it.

Once a knight, always a knight. Even without the organization, he would always be a knight in his heart. At least that’s what he told his dear friend such a long time ago. A man walked by him with a heavy package thrown over his shoulder. Kaz full well intended to stand in prominence here. He walked over carefully and put a hand on the man’s heavy burden.

“Can I help you with that?” He asked in his typical polite manner.

The man jostled for a moment out of surprise, “Uh. Oh. Why...Thanks, little guy,” the fisherman was built wide and tall. Kaz lightened the man’s load and eased it from his shoulders so they both could carry it.

“Been tradin here for some time. Don’t know if I recognize you too well,”
the gruff man spoke.

“Me. I’m the guild master of Phoenix Feather. A pleasure to make your acquaintance,” kaz said with a smile.
The man staggered for a moment. The large package slumped on his side and he quickly shuffled his hands to clasp it tightly once more. “You? You’re the guild master. To that buildin o’er there way up?!”

“One and the same,”
Kaz replied with an affirmative head nod.

“Well I’ll be. Nice meetin ya I guess. Folks have been real curious as to what you plan on doin. Who ya are.”

“I’d certainly like the idea of explaining myself and working things out. My guild is about helping anyone who needs it. About seeing to justice and that people are taken care of. I was wondering if you could point me in the direction of those who are in charge around here.”

The fisherman gave a sideways laugh, “This is a market. Ain’t no one in control here. You got goods and wares. Ya move em.”

Kaz breathed out of his nose and stared the man directly in his eyes, “Before I became Guild Master I was a Rune Knight. I know that while things may not be on paper. There are always those that people look to. I’m just trying to see them too.”

The fisherman wiped his sleeve on his nose. “Alright then. Alright. You gotta know. I’ll point ya where to go. Few men around here are the movers and shakers. You’ll wanna start over there at the Honey-Suckle Consortium,” he nodded his head to the left side of the street. “Or over there at Anchor’s High,” he nodded to the right of the streets and down some ways.

Kaz had two choices and he intended on going to both of them. “Thank you. Now let's get this package where it needs to go.” He helped the man through the area and spent the rest of the day doing odd jobs for people as he had when he was a page. The people still needed help and he needed to get his name out to them in a way that represented what he stood for.

The sun was beginning to set and the hustle of the market place was slowing. Kaz had a couple more stops to make though. He walked down the streets, waving at the few people he had already helped that day until he stopped in front of the Honey-Suckle Consortium. One lone guard stood in front of it, rising up from his leaning position to greet Kaz with an outstretched hand.

Before the guard could speak Kaz stopped and spoke, “Easy. I mean no trouble. I only wanted to let you know that I will be back tomorrow to speak with the merchants here. I’m the new guild master that has moved here.”

The guard's hand was stiff and slowly lowered, realizing he wasn’t in front of any normal late-night drabble. “Oh uh...yes...then I shall inform them you will be back tomorrow?” The guard said with a rising intonation, wondering if the wind mage needed anything more.

“Thank you. Enjoy your night,” he replied and began the march back up to the guild. He hoped the other members were making a positive impact in the community as well.

That night Kaz returned to the guild and pondered what he would say to the people tomorrow. He toiled in his office until he made his way to the rooftop and the open air. He stayed for hours in meditation as he did when he was a young man. Then it struck him. He laid back with a gleeful grin and his eyes gazed upon the stars. “Of course.”

The morning came and he was already on the move. His focus was fixed on the Consortium. Traders rushed by with goods for sales and people haggled over jewels. It was the taste of wealth and commerce that exuded from the wine merchants swirled glasses, he gave out for a taste to lure people in.

The guard on shift recognized him from the description his predecessor gave. Kaz nodded as the guard opened the door. The wind mage entered with trepidation hidden behind confidence. The room was filled with merchants from all lines of work. They wore pins on their garments to signify their affiliation. One wore a sword and shield, and others wore, a potion bottle, fish, spice shakers, anvils, and more. All of them made of silver.

They were not waiting on the wind mage. Instead, they were all standing and walking about in small clusters with one another, discussing trade. This was where the major deals that hit the economy of Astera happened. Where travelers from other regions came to get a foothold in the financial arena. And among all of them now, was Kazimir, a lone wind mage.

“Hello all,”
he announced to the room and they fell silent aside from curious whispers. “My name is,”

“We know who you are,” a man spoke out in a flat voice but one with intrigue in his heart. “Former Commander of the Knights turned Guild Master. And we suspect we know your history here as well,” the man said as he stepped forward. His pin was that of a wagon wheel.

Kaz’s eyes narrowed, unsure of just how much the man knew about him. The wind mage stepped forward and was about to be cut off again but talked over the merchant. He had to be bold here, “Indeed then. You know they called me the Tornado Scourge. That I wandered the lands here for a time facing off with bandits. Not many people are aware of that,” his admittance gathered more whispers and some pleased snickers from the corners stacked with plates of grapes.

The man with the wagon wheel pin laughed and poured a glass of wind. The liquid complimented the man’s purple robes and golden embroidery. “It did us a great favor. You made it safe for us to trade once more. Come sit. What have you for us Kazimir?”

The man placed a hand on Kaz’s arm and led him to a more central table. On the other hand, the man handed Kaz the wine of which he accepted and took a sip. “Thank you for your time,” Kaz began as he took a seat next to the man and a few others joined them. Some walked by with a simple pat on Kaz’s back.

“It is one thing to help us with bandits and another to move into town with the lofty goals that you have,” the man’s words were neutral from the good favor Kaz had already garnered but they were laced with a hint of worry.

“I know. And times are chaotic now that the Rune Knights have become more akin to private militias than law enforcers. I started a new guild. One that sought to step away from the corruption that festered in the knights. We are out to make ourselves strong and face down crime. To ensure that good people go unharmed and that we can live in a safe and peaceful world.”

The man nodded along to Kaz’s words. They were big dreams and somewhat idealistic but he was still interested. “So how do you propose to do that?”

“I don’t want to change things around here. But if we are together we are strongest. The guild is for everyone and our mission supports all. I’d like your support in establishing the guild in Astera and being more engaged with the marketplace. In exchange I’ll like to use some of my connections in other cities and as Spring is upon us, its a great time to hold a festival to bring people in to the markets. And also as a guild we will of course help with any disturbances and dangers may face the people that would impact the markets.”

As Kaz finished the man leaned back in his chair and stroked his beard. The others exchanged a mix of looks. “hmmm,” a long wistful sound came from the man’s mouth as he lifted his wine cup, still in contemplation. Pulling it away from his lips he swirled it in his hand. The wine grazing the top rim of the glass. “My name is Armond Tuiso. And Yes I believe these terms will be acceptable on two conditions. One, you will need to convince the fishermen. They are a major source of income and influence here. And the second. Make an appearance at the merchant market tonight. It's usually a private affair of the most notable individuals”

Kaz nodded his head in agreement and reached out to shake the man’s hand, “You have a deal. I’ll look into what can be done. In the meantime, I’ll send word to some of my other connections about the festival here to bring in more business and speak to the fisherman.

The rest of the parties at the table agreed and Kaz stood up to leave. In the corner was a man that avoided taking a seat at the table. Instead, he glared at the wind mage. He didn’t have a pin on his garment like the others.

The wind mage left knowing all too well that this was no ordinary invitation there was, of course, another layer to things as there always was. Nonetheless, he made his way to the fisherman.

Their market filled the air with the scent of the sea. Stalls lined both sides of the street, waiting to be approached. Eventually, Kaz made his way to one stall bigger than the rest. Within was a stout man and against the wall was an enormous swordfish.

As soon as Kaz crossed the threshold with his foot the man slammed his cleaver on a cutting board to sever the head of a fish. “He was merrily whistling and only stopped to cheerfully greet the wind mage. “I know why you’re here. You already met with the other merchants and you'll be wantin my support as well I take it. So what’ll I get out of it?”

Kaz smiled and leaned against the thick support beam to his right. “Ahead of the game, I see. I do want your support for the guild and the area. In return, I aim to bring more business to the area. With the rune knights, scattered chances of lawless actions will be on the rise. Phoenix Feather’s presence can steer that away from here. Other than that I’d like to organize a spring festival to bring in more people to bring in business and connect the locals to the shops more.”

“Hefty goals you have there. How do ya plan to do all that?” The fisherman asked with a new knife in his hand to fillet the fish.

“For the festival I’d like to have the beginning of an annual competition for someone to bring in the largest catch. A point of pride for those in the craft. On the merchant side of things, I suppose we could have demonstrations of their crafts and discounts to bring in the beginning of Spring.”

The large-bodied fisherman guffawed at the idea. “A competition among fishermen eh? Well I can get behind that. And if you can drive more business in,” he contemplated the rest of Kaz’s words. They did need the potential for more protection and working together to bring in business was always a good idea.

“Alright, little man. You get the others on board and let me know. But first, you may wanna take care of another problem. I’m sure you’ll find out tonight. There has been a guy buying up people's stalls and running some out of business. His prices are hard to beat. You deal with that. And you’ll have the sea market.”

Kaz nodded once again and didn’t ask any further questions. He knew they would be answered tonight. Given what he went through in the past, this seemed to be a simple matter to deal with.

The sun fell as Kaz spent the day in and out of markets meeting and helping all the people where he could. It was finally time to meet the others. He headed to the meeting place without a change of clothes. He splashed some water on his face and freshened up quickly before arriving at the pearl gates. They opened slowly at the hands of a butler letting the wind mage enter. Once inside he could see the gathering of all those he had met earlier and some new faces.

Armond crossed the courtyard with wide arms and hugged the wind mage. The table dotted the landscape with food and wine dripping from it. All the lavish trimmings of a long night. “My good friend!” The man said allowed as his arms wrapped around Kaz’s shoulders in a bear hug.

“The man with the compass pin was watching you earlier. He will make a move tonight on me and now you,” Armon whispered into Kaz’s ear. There was a worried tone laced within it. The man wasn’t trying to set up the wind mage. Simply deal with a future threat now, one that would get in both their way.

Kaz sighed and patted the man on the back, “Good to see you to friend. Tonight will be one to remember,” Kaz replied and reassured the man he was on his side. Armond turned around with an arm still around Kaz, “They are the waiters. Be on the lookout,” he whispered. “And Now let us enjoy some drinks!” He yelled out to maintain their cover. Yet again Kazimir was forced to be discreet. He couldn’t for the life of him figure out why it all came down to this every time. But it’s what needed to be done.

He moved through the field of people with Armond. Eyes shifted towards them and away. A lingering feeling of forboding clung to the atmosphere. They each grabbed a glass of wine from a table and moved further inward. A man with a compass pin grazed by the two of them. The fabric of his sleeve rustling against Kaz. In that instant, he felt a sudden shift in the atmosphere. As if deviant attention was placed upon him.

“That was him. It seems things will be getting more lively soon,”
Armond spoke as he took his arm from around the man’s shoulder and shifted away. “Look after me this evening will you,” were his last words spoken in angst as he forced a smile when the next herd of people approached him.

Kaz walked between the people, keeping an eye out for anything and rubbing elbows with some of the other merchants. Making sure they were all on the same page. Then something caught his eye. One of the waiters disappeared behind a corner. Kaz slipped away from the party and gave pursuit. Turning the corner he saw the man climb to a high window and slink inside.

Looking around to make sure all was clear, Kaz lifted himself up at eye level to see inside. Within he saw the man land on his feet and move towards the drink table. It was a platter getting ready to go out. The waiter pulled a vial from his pocket and popped the top off.

Kaz dropped down from the window. his landing caused the man to tense and whirl around. The vial was partially open and drips of the liquid fell to the floor. They looked at both the droplets fall. Kaz knew instantly it was poison. They exchanged a look and the man reached for a knife. Kaz dashed forward and drove a fist to the man's gut. The waiter doubled over and Kaz grabbed a silver platter and rang his bell with it.

The waiter's unconscious body was drug to a closet and stuffed inside. Looks like it was time for the real party to start. He turned to rejoin the guest as two more entered. They drew knives and lunged forward. Kaz rolled over the table and flung open a cabinet drawer, striking one man in the head. The waiter crumpled to the ground.

The next stabbed forward. Kaz arched backward, evading the blow and swiped his hand, sending a thin blade of wind outward and disarming the man while cutting into his arm. before the man could howl in pain, Kaz covered his mouth, rotated and threw the man to the ground. Two more down and the closet was getting full. The wind mage fixed his suit and walked back out into the party. The guests were all still having a great time. Laughted dotted the landscape and wine flowed freely.

Kaz scanned the area for more waiters when his eyes flashed wide from the sudden hand on his shoulder. His heels clicked across the ground as he was drug back into a hallway. Two arms wrapped up his own. A man held him from behind and a second emerged with a kick to Kaz's gut sending spit flying.

"We don't need you getting in the way of our business here, punk," one of the waiters growled. Kaz rocked up in the air, using the man that held him as leverage and drove both his feet into the other one. The blow sent him staggering backward. Using the momentum of the fall, Kaz flung the man that held him over his shoulder and onto the ground. Kaz rushed forward and punted the waiter in the face sending his eyes rolling back.

The second waiter scrambled to his feet. Before he could get stable, Kaz rushed in and shoulder checked him into a wall. The waiter groaned in pain. A sound that was silenced as Kaz dug a fist into the man's jaw. Two more down and the night was young.

Kaz once again returned. This time his clothes were a bit amiss and he straightened himself out. Armond glanced over with a nod, knowing full well what was happening. Armond began to stroll in front of the building, heading towards the restrooms. He passed by a window and then an open hallway. As he walked by the window, a waiter zipped in behind him. There was a metal gleam on a knife.

Kaz sighed and moved through the crowd hastily. As the waiter walked by the open hallway, Kaz tackled him down it. They tumbled on the ground until Kaz rained down enough fists to stop him. Breathing a sigh of relief he starred out the window in the next room only to see another waiter pulling a gun from beneath a waiter's cart.

kaz rushed forward and pushed the gun back beneath. He swung a leg around the cart and connected with the man's midsection. The blow knocked him backwards.

The waited crashed into the door. Kaz rose a hand and sent another blade of wind as subtle as the first into the man. The magical attack cracked the door with the man's body as he fell through it, moaning from the pain. Kaz stepped over him. From his count earlier, there couldn't be many more waiters. Armond had made it to the restroom and Kaz leaned against a wall.

Suddenly a crowd began to form outside. There was a fire-breather giving a performance. It gathered all the guests to watch in amazement, Including Armond. It was now that the true mastermind was revealed. The man with the compass pin appeared on the second-floor balcony with a sinister grin. his hands fumbled with something that was hard to make out.

Kaz dashed on the wind and was on the balcony in an instant. in the man's hands was a switch leading to a keg of hidden gun powder beneath some of the carts around the fire-breather. The man with the compass shot an angry glare. His pulse raced and his brows lowered. His thumb grazed the switch.

The air condensed around them. Kaz swiped his hand and a blade of wind rushed out. The man laughed as the blade veered away from him as his thumb hit the switch. But nothing happened. The blade of wind cut the powerline attached to the switch. Kaz ran to the man and flipped him over the balcony to hit the ground with a thud. The merchants now crowded around him, spouting of accusation after accusation.

"Well Kaz. well done. Sorry it turned out this way,"
Armond said

Kaz crossed his arms with a smirk, "Don't worry. I suspected you invited me here to take care of some dirty work and it wasn't just to rub elbows."

"haha, Caught me. Well, we've seen you in action. You've done a good service to us in the past and ensured our lives tonight. So thank you. You have our endorsement. We've suspected that he may try and do something like this tonight. And he has been a problem for our work so thank you."

And with that Kaz shook their hands and left for the night to get some rest. The next day word traveled fast. He met with the fishermen that were already gearing up for the biggest catch event for the spring. The merchants were discussing their discounts for the festival and how to draw in the locals more.

The greeted Kaz with friendly smiles and he stopped to eat at a local restaurant.
