Florence Haddock

Personal

Name: Florence Haddock

Age: 21

Gender: Male

Class: Adventurer

Rank: D-rank

Guild: Rune Knights

Tattoo: Black; on the left hand.

Face: Raidou Kuzunoha from Shin Megami Tensei

Appearance

Height: 6'0"

Weight: 162 lbs

Hair: His hair is black in color, and done in a buzzcut style

Eyes: Grey

Overall: There are two things that would become immediately obvious upon looking at Florence.

The first is his cloak - black as night and draping down to his knees comfortably. Flowing and mysterious, it's able to wrap around his entire body and conceal himself. He may look shady, but boy does he ever think he comes off as a cool guy for wearing it.

Secondly, the thing a person may notice is his hat. One might recognize it as the hat of a military general - though, from its make and symbol, its unknown to which military it originates from. Contradictory, however, is the fact that it holds no implication to his true rank as some sort of general; merely a family heirloom doubling as a fashion statement.

Sticking true to these two notable accessories, the rest of his outfit follows a similar pattern. He wears a midnight black suit underneath the cloak, held together by leather and metal straps that contain various items he might need for his adventures.

On his feet, he wears black dress shoes. Not typically seen as fighting material, but he chooses fashion first and effectiveness second - especially with his preferred line of work.

Personality

Personality:

I wouldn't say I'm suited to this whole "knight" thing, in truth. I just wanna pursue a good mystery - y'know, like the ultimate case that just needs cracking; a true brain scrambler for a sleuth like me. Miss me with that complicated magic stuff, man. Miss me with it.

Black: the color symbolizing nothingness. A void that can't be filled, or a mystery that can't be solved. It's a past that can't be trailed by the greatest of minds, yet so many try anyway. Truthfully, it isn't something that one becomes; one is merely born that way, bonded with the darkness at their birth.

Or that's how Florence sees it, anyway. Truthfully if there were to be a color to describe Florence, it would be a deep blue. He's deceitful, prideful, and at times delusional of who he truly is. Sarcasm sprinkles his words often, and he's usually quite cynical and informal in speech. In addition, he'll often monologue to himself, sometimes out loud, about the current situation in the most "dark" and "edgy" way he can think of. It adds flavor to the scenario, or so he believes.

As someone who considers himself to be one with darkness itself, it's more accurate to say that he's making a bigger mystery out of himself than what's truly present.

He revels in conjuring stories. A self-proclaimed demonologist, he prefers to indulge in made-up fantasies of what he pretends to know instead of researching on what he knows. Despite this, he does seem to have luck on his side a lot - many guesses he makes towards traits belonging to magical beings end up being true in the end. One would often consider him extremely lucky for the way he dodges otherwise fatal situations; almost as if someone was smiling up at him from above.

Of course, Florence isn't one to really believe in religion. Sticking only with what he's seen before with his own eyes, clearly vampires, werewolves and demons all exist as per his encounters with each (a blatant lie on his part).

He is diligent and studious when it comes time to get serious, however; and although he isn't very fond of conflict, he does rely on his blue colored trickery to carry him through a fight, rather than pure force. Though when it does come to skills, he isn't considered a Rune Knight, albeit a low ranking one, for no reason - his ability with a sword is nothing to scoff at when compared to some of the other people of his rank.

Typically he takes up less of the physically demanding jobs and more of the ones involving a brain - he'd rather be an information gatherer, spy or detective than some sort of musclebound juggernaut of a wizard. Well, not that he can even cast magic of his own accord anyway - though he tries not to let that get him down.

He likes to think of himself as being more special than he really is, taking on high-powered foes with nothing but his cunning. In truth it's desperation to prove to himself and others that he can be equal to the greatest of wizards.

All in all, Florence is simply a man of "mystery" willing to put an end to evil in his own special way.

Likes:

  • Jazz: He loves the refined, melancholic tones that are carried through the musical waves of jazz. On a clear night he loves nothing more than to sit outside and revel in his own super cool and original (in his eyes) lifestyle.

  • Puzzles: As one who prides himself on his self-proclaimed title as a detective, he wholeheartedly enjoys fiddling with various puzzles and "brain training" type games. Keeps him on his toes, or so he says.

Perhaps he just likes to gloat about that one time that he swears for sure he solved that Rubik's Cube in 10 seconds flat. In the comfort of his own home, where no one saw him do it and it was never recorded.

  • Stage Magic: Not the kind of magic that's used every day by countless people for blowing up ol' Auntie Suzie's bakery down in Magnolia; no, Florence refers to the magicians who get up on stage and perform. He loves to get out and see these people use up their tricks, captivating an audience with nothing more than clever layouts, sly angles and swiftly executed sleight of hand.

Sometimes he pieces together what their secrets are, other times he's stumped; but it's the thrill of seeing somebody performing magic without performing magic that motivates him to try harder, himself.

Dislikes:

  • Chivalry: "Chivalry is dead," as the saying goes. It may seem ironic for a Rune Knight to believe that saying, but it's true. Florence believes it's an outdated code that should make room for more modernized law enforcement tactics.

What's a dirty trick or two if it means a criminal gets caught with no casualties, right? Or to sneak in the shadows rather than engage a foe outright? Or god forbid, research an opponent, even the less threatening ones, before facing whatever unexpected trump card they may have?

It's not all chivalrous spirits that he dislikes, just the ones that put it above their obligation to protect the innocent in the most intelligent and efficient way one can.

  • Warm Weather: It shouldn't come as much of a surprise. With his love of wearing dark clothing and wandering in his cloak, there's nothing worse for him than a bright summer day with the heat it brings him. It might even force him to... wear something brighter!

  • Demons: Claiming to be a demonologist researching the dark arts, he still has a strong dislike for demonkind. He sees them as one of the causes for everything wrong with the world, and that as long as they and those who worship them still exist, the world can't progress towards something better.

He can be intrigued by what they have to offer as a species, sure, and he isn't stupid enough to go up against one without proper preparation; but nevertheless, he won't be making friends with them any time soon.

Motivations:

  • Solve the great mysteries of the world: Why do humans exist? What's the origin of magic? Is there really a God? And what IS a hotdog made out of, anyway? These questions and more are all ones that Florence wishes to find an answer to in his lifetime.

While each individually seems to be unable to be answered by any human before him, he wishes to see a new generation brought up with these questions answered so that humanity can progress in a positive direction. He won't feel fulfilled unless they're all answered and revealed to the world.

  • Open up an inn: After completing his above objective, or perhaps as a way to help him achieve it in the future, he wishes to open up an inn capable of welcoming weary travelers from all parts of the world.

Being able to simultaneously gather information and make money while living comfortably to prepare for his next adventure, where could one go wrong? Who knows? Maybe he'll even open up some sort of adventurer's guild for curious minds like him, with the inn as his guild hall.

Fears:

  • Clowns: An illogical fear, to be sure, yet oh so common. Their posture, bright clothing and cheerful expression literally painted on, all combined result in an unpredictable foe regardless of whether they're actually an enemy. They could be plotting his assassination and he'd have such a hard time reading them. A fear of the unknown nature of these demonic beings prompts him to shut down emotionally and withdraw physically from them.

  • Insects: No matter how intelligent he may become or how gifted a fighter he may become, nothing can prepare him for the creeping, crawling feeling of those creepy crawlies. With their small bodies almost invisible unless he's paying attention, he can't predict what they'll do to him should they touch him - and he absolutely refuses to pick up a textbook to study their biology. Even seeing them in pictures sends him into recluse, unwilling to go near them.

Strangely, gigantic mutated insects don't bother him. Only the ones normal for their size.
