She had doubts as to whether or not Orchidia would have actually been welcoming or if their encounter with the leader of the city was simply just an attempt at them to appease her, then otherwise dismiss her. However, as Astrid and Sia were led to the private quarters provided by the ruler as a “gift from the city of Orchidia”, she had to admit that maybe she was wrong about these people.

The room was massive, to say the least. No doubt that this would have been a place in which important figures would be housed, and the interior of it, from the cleanliness to the décor, to the general atmosphere, it felt like a completely different thing than that of what the rest of the city appeared to have been from her brief venture through the main gate. It was lovely.

“An impressive display,” Astrid said aloud, as much as she wanted to deny her surprise, the sight before her was one that would not allow it.

“Having second thoughts about having Oak Town as your headquarters?” Sia chimed in, much in jest, but even her happening to appreciate the shock on Astrid’s face. Based on the remarks that Astrid provided on the road to Orchidia, it seemed that she would have been lucky to say even a single nice thing about the city. That a compliment already came, and not even a day’s worth of time through their trip thus far, it exceeded her expectations and merited the retort.

Astrid scoffed at the notion, appreciating Sia’s remark all the same. “Cute. But I’m loathed to think that Orchidia would much appreciate me tearing down something like this,” her words trailed as her fingers gently lined against the walls, feeling the texture of the deep red paint that had been applied, fairly consistent in its texture, though not perfect. “It’s too small, and honestly I’d prefer it if I weren’t dealing with a brooding color. But…” Her hand pulled away, the mystique of the room having now waned, “I would say we get a rest now. Tomorrow will no doubt be a busy one and I would prefer spending what time left of the today enjoying that body of yours.”

She smirked, “I’m sure you would agree.”

The night dragged on, much to the delight of both Astrid and Sia, the two having missed each other’s company more than perhaps either of them would have liked to admit. It was a much needed feeling of relief, an overdue rush of pleasure that Astrid had been long without; her time in Oak Town having largely monopolized all of her time as she figured out the coordination between her location in Oak Town and all of her active affairs going on within Crocus. It did not help either that her expected mistress, Lady Tsara, was unable to arrive in Oak Town, finding herself occupied with some matters that were taking place within the Capital. It disappointed Astrid greatly, but she understood. Tsara had done so much for her, had willingly given her time and body towards Astrid, that it was only appropriate that when her own needs came forth, that she respect that wish.

That Sia was back in her company made up for it, and especially in official capacities like their agenda both broadly here and today in particular, having someone who could provide further insight and was as knowledgeable about the entire project they were about to see was beyond valuable. In reality, Sia likely knew as much, if not more, about Orchidia’s wall than anyone save for perhaps some of the engineers that were responsible for its construction. She had gone through every bit of research and information that she was able to obtain in order to fully understand what was going on with it all, her breadth of knowledge expanding up to as far as she could possibly have taken it barring a background in engineering.

But even in that, Sia’s knowledge would be invaluable and more than anything else, even without her having a precise understanding of everything related to the walls, she was knowledgeable enough to where Astrid could not be given false information and forced to believe it true. That was what Sia was, in addition to everything else Astrid expected of her, a lie detector.

The wall was admittedly impressive, if not a gross example of being over the top in its construction.

Astrid and Sia met atop the wall after ascending on a reinforced wooden lift that carried the pair, along with the leader of Orchidia up the length of the wall, hundreds of feet within the air. It was an impressive feat, and an almost terrifying one to see just how high up this wall had been constructed, and begged the question of how something like this was made without there being any news of it across any of Fiore. A project as ambitious as this, and for there to have been so much progress towards it – as Astrid could see, it seemed to extend across the full length of Orchidia, so far that even she could not see the entirety of it all – surely would have been talked about.

It seemed like it lasted forever, the trio of them spending multiple minutes ascending up the side of the wall. Astrid could not help but feel uneasy about the whole thing, a part of her a little worried if the mechanisms surrounding this lift were to fail. But as she could tell, and based on how comfortable the leader of Orchidia seemed to have been, these lifts were constructed to have all sorts of precautions already figured. Although she had certainly seen lifts and efforts within construction projects across Fiore that ran the gauntlet of quality, she had to admit that this one was probably the highest quality to any that she had seen before. Certainly that she had ridden upon.

Eventually they arrived to the top of the wall, immediately the sense of just how up in the air they were meeting her as the air became thin. Not thin enough where one could not breathe, but certainly it was noticeable. Even more, the way that the horizon ahead seemed to simply dip, indicative of the height, was something that she could not have escape her mind.

If any of them were to fall, they were doomed without some means of flight.

“I thought that this whole thing was questionable, but you’re serious, aren’t you? Titans?” Astrid’s words echoed across the section of the wall that they all stood upon. Her, Sia, the Orchidia leader, and four other men, three of them having been leaders of the Orchidia Military and the fourth one of the Chief Engineers responsible for the walls’ construction and maintenance, all of them stood there as they explained the purpose behind the walls, their value, and the reason for their need. Titans, a threat that had nearly wiped out Orchidia not too long ago. Repelled by the guild Paradise Dawn in what was recognized as a masterclass of defense, it had been assumed by most of Fiore that the threat had been forever wiped out since. “There hasn’t been a Titan that’s existed since Paradise Dawn wiped them out.”

“You say that, but that’s far from the truth,” One of the military commanders spoke up, his voice ragged and haggard, “Most of them, yes, they were basically all wiped out. But there were still some left. Far enough out that their purge didn’t reach them. It was always a risk that some lived. We just hoped that the numbers would have been few enough to not worry about.”

“The reality was, the Titans just beyond Orchidia’s borders were wiped out yes. But we did not account for much deeper out, to territory extending even as far out as the Worth Woodsea even. Whether the same Titans, different ones, or ones that we never accounted for, after not too long we started seeing them move into territory once cleared out.”

Astrid looked out beyond the walls, numerous trees having been felled, what almost could be described as a poor logging attempt. But as she looked closer, something did not seem to add up. There were trees hacked up, some that seemed uprooted entirely, some toppled over atop others. The more she looked at it, the more it looked like something had run through it, pushing trees over, uprooting some entirely. Something big.

“We thought that the success Paradise Dawn saw would have been enough to stop them entirely. But after some time, we realized that any efforts to branch out into lands once held by them were met by attacks. Entire dreams and projects that would have seen the expansion of Orchidia grow were crippled and dead upon arrival once we realized what was actually out there.”

"And so you decided to pursue this? Creation of this wall?”

“If we hadn’t, I’m not sure if Orchidia would have been able to survive.”

Astrid looked around, seeing everything that was present upon the wall. Munitions and artillery, crates of supplies and everything required to set up a makeshift camp were set up everywhere. It was apparent that if something were to happen, the forces were expected to mobilize, utilizing this wall as a front line of sorts. And given some of the supplies seemed to have been storage, it was obvious too that expectations were that they would hold for as long as needed. Days. Perhaps weeks even.

“That’s quite a story,” Astrid began, “But unfortunately, what proof can you provide me? By all accounts, it seems you’re saying that because of some sort of threat that exists within lands that you were unable to venture into before that may have always existed, you just assume it has to be Titans that all of Fiore knows were systematically wiped out.” It was a cruel assessment, but there was logic behind it, and from the cynical perspective, or even that that had heard the tales of what Paradise Dawn achieved, they would likely find themselves inclined to agree with Astrid. “And to double down on it all, you erected these massive walls, fortified them, for what sort of threat? Has there ever been an actual battle that has taken place upon these walls?”

There was a silence that lingered for a moment before finally one of the Military commanders spoke up. “Well… no… but that doesn’t mean that it can’t happen!”

Astrid looked at them with great dismissal. Everything she had heard up to this point had given her reason to have this effort shut down. And in her mind, it was already done. This was enough reason to force Orchidia’s hand and accept whatever audit she would submit to them.

“Now, I see the look in your face,” the Orchidia leader spoke, holding up his hands in an almost surrendering look. “Before you arrived, we had sent out an expedition to venture deep within those same lands, determine just what may be out there. They’ve been gone days, but we expect them to return in the next day. Before you make any judgments, let’s wait to hear back from them and see if they have any proof to what has been claimed. Does that seem reasonable?”

It was a final effort, but not an unreasonable one. Astrid did not expect that any sort of success would come from their expedition, but she entertained the idea all the same.

“Fine. Until they return. Then we sit down and finally discuss the matter at hand.”
