Atani didn't know what she had done exactly at Hinoki Theatre looking after the children at their day camp, but she had somehow gotten the attention of Yua. For one reason or another, she wanted the elf to play a role in her latest production. Particularly, she wanted her to play the role of a villain-- but not just any villain. The villain. Gods... she must have either been very desperate, or she had a very specific vision for the character that only an elf could fulfill. Either way, she was roped into it with the promise of some cash.

Atani stood in the backstage studio, arms outstretched as her layered kimono was being fit to her figure. All the while, she went over her lines as she tried to get them down for the upcoming performance. After she was fit for the costume, she was directed over to a chair for makeup.

She knew stage makeup was supposedly heavy in any form, but traditional Joyan stage makeup took it to a whole new level. Her skin was absolutely layered with pale white foundation. Her face looked nearly porcelain before they began adding some of the other colors on. She was given streaks of red around her eyes and along her cheeks. To complete the look, she was fitted with a wig that completely covered her short blonde hair and replaced it with locks that were long, dark, and bone straight. In the end, she looked like an entirely different person. If it weren't for her ears, you could never tell she wasn't among the usual troupe of actors.

All in all, it appeared her presence in the play would be relatively limited. Despite being the antagonist for the grand hero of the play, it was customary for her not to appear until the final act.

She had very few lines to memorize. Instead, the bulk of her performance would be in the final battle between her character and Tomura Matsukaze's character. Not only was he an actor, but he was also a genuine mage as well, and he liked to incorporate his skills as one in these fights. Yua had warned Atani beforehand that Tomura had a tendency to go off script during these fight scenes. While it didn't always go with her vision of how the play should go, she did have to admit that it made the fights look more natural, and the audience loved it each and every time. Whenever there was a play announced with Tomura Matsukaze as the lead, Hosenka citizens knew they were going to get a good show.

Atani understood a bit more why Yua had hired her now. She had mentioned her skill in magic from the previous job.

If Atani could hold her own in a real fight, she should be able to do so with ease in this stage play. And at her current skill level in magic, she wouldn't even have a chance of stealing the show anyway. She already had a vague idea of how long she would want to draw out the battle with Tomura, but the details of it would ultimately rest on how capable of a show opponent he was.

Atani examined Tomura's moves from behind the scenes and chatted with some of the other actors. Eventually, the final act came and it was her turn to go on stage. Feeling relatively prepared, she said her lines and faced off with Tomura who brandished his sword and challenged Atani's character. She raised a prop sword of her own and enchanted it with light magic which won a few ooohs and aaahs from the crowd. She battled Tomura, who did hold his own fairly well, but he wasn't as experienced as Atani. Still, the play was written a certain way, so she had to let him strike her down and be the hero. The play finished with a roar of applause, and Atani went backstage to receive her reward.
